Tiny Dog Survives Brutal Beating, Finds Home with Volunteer

Eva Podietz is one of the ASPCA’s most dedicated volunteers. Scores of ASPCA animals have benefited from Eva’s care, and the most recent addition to Eva’s furry family is Bentley, a little Shih Tzu who suffered immensely before starting his new life.

Bentley came to us after a devastating kick to the head that left him with a dangerous brain hemorrhage, broken jaw and a broken skull, threatening to destroy his tiny brain stem. He could barely stand or move his legs.

Any sudden movements could have killed Bentley in those early days. ASPCA veterinarians provided critical head trauma care, medications to reduce fluid build-up in his brain, and comprehensive pain management. Our hospital staff could tell that Bentley was a fighter. He survived those initial days. Then the first two weeks. As soon as he could, Bentley began lifting his neck and wagging his tail to greet staffers. And one day, Bentley began to regain use of his legs!

But Bentley was still a bit scared of people, and he wasn’t eating as well as they’d hoped. They placed him in foster care with Eva, and he quickly gained a pound and started to open up. “After a month it was clear it was an adoption, not a foster,” Eva tells us. Now he is showered with love, attends doggy daycare and, despite everything he’s been through, “doesn’t seem to hold a grudge.”

Bentley isn’t Eva’s first ASPCA rescue. Back in 2006, Cloudy came to us severely matted and suffering from multiple infections. He was also blind and had several back problems. We knew he needed a special home, and he found it with Eva, who has given him the best life possible. That’s why we’re extra glad to see Bentley earn a spot in such a wonderful home.

“They’re the ASPCA’s dogs; I’m just their caretaker,” Eva jokes. “They’ve got lots of admirers and people who love them at the ASPCA. And everywhere! But especially at the A.”

These pups were lucky to find Eva, and lucky to receive care thanks to ASPCA donors like you. Your donations fund our critical work to rescue animals from abuse and ensure their abusers face legal consequences. If now is a good time for you to give, please consider doing so today.

Have you fostered or adopted a cruelty victim? Tell us about it in the comments. And if you suspect you’ve witnessed cruelty, please report it. Dogs like Bentley and Cloudy are counting on it!

ASPCA Volunteers Choose National Volunteer Week Grants

Wednesday, April 24, 2013 - 3:00pm

Earlier this year, we invited animal welfare organizations to apply for one of three $10,000 Volunteer Appreciation Program grants to be awarded during National Volunteer Week—which is happening right now! We couldn’t believe the response we got from more than 140 groups eager to brag about their amazing volunteers. Our experts winnowed the impressive list down to a few finalists, and we asked our own volunteers to vote on the three winners.

In the end, the rockstar grantees were:

• Ark-Valley Humane Society (Buena Vista, CO)
• Mayport Cats (Jacksonville, FL)
• Foothills Humane Society (Tryon, NC)

Each group will receive a $10,000 grant in recognition of their volunteers’ amazing work for animals. Congratulations, guys!

Member Story: Responding to Joplin

Tuesday, May 22, 2012 - 1:00pm
Story About Joplin Disaster

Guest blog written by Cathy W., ASPCA Legacy Society member

I was part of the search and rescue team after the tornado hit Joplin. We lost 161 people in our community that evening—and lives were forever changed. We are still recovering and rebuilding.

I found a little dog that had been so injured and nearly died. I went to the area where the ASPCA had set up a shelter—taking in, loving and caring for animals. Surgeries were performed as needed, and shots, collars and other items were provided. It was so organized.

Several weeks later adoptions were advertised and people came from all over the country to adopt the precious pets. Every animal was adopted…given another chance. Some were reunited with their original families. A happy ending to a tragic day.

That is when we decided to include ASPCA, PETA and Hospice Care in our wills. We are supporters of life, freedom, kindness and our most beloved four-legged pets. I will never forget that day! Never!!

We are truly their voice.

Calling All Foodies: Little Lola Is Your Kindred Spirit

Friday, May 18, 2012 - 3:45pm
Lola the Chihuahua at ASPCA Adoption Center

Hello! Do you have a snack? A dog treat? Just a small, delicious morsel? Could you maybe just give that to Lola? OK, you guys are now BFFs for life.

It's really that simple with our crazy-adorable lap dog Lola, who has been patiently waiting at our Adoption Center for longer than we really understand. A Chihuahua through and through, Lola wants to sit on your lap and be unwaveringly loyal and close to you. (Especially if you have something tasty for her.)

Frankly, we're not sure how anyone could resist her sweet face, tiny paws and penchant for affection. Maybe people are a little wary of her age—nine—but that’s barely middle-aged for a Chihuahua, and she has all the energy and spirit of a pup of three. Like most Chi Chis, she needs a little time to get to know a person before falling in love with them, but that amount of time is really short. (It's basically however long it takes you to produce a treat.)

There's a song in Damn Yankees that goes, "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets," and that's been true for her at the ASPCA Adoption Center—but the one thing our Lola really wants, to go home at last, remains a wish unfulfilled.

Can you give her the life she deserves? (And can you hook her up with lots of treats? Seriously, she'll do anything you ask. For treats.) Learn more about her on her page and please share her on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. If you think you’d like to adopt her, please call our Animal Placement department in NYC at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4900.

Thank you for helping Lola find a family!

Spring Cleaning? Don't Toss Those Towels!

Thursday, April 12, 2012 - 3:45pm

Hey folks, anyone else in the mood for a little spring cleaning? There’s something so refreshing about emptying out the closets—but before you toss your dusty treasures, give your local shelter a call. It likely could use old towels, bedding, plastic bags, office supplies…and much more!

What better feeling than knowing a homeless pet is snuggled up on that old comforter you no longer use or that your old printer is now helping to make adoption flyers? Plus, items don't need to be in tip-top shape—just clean!

For more easy ways to make a difference, visit our Top Ten Ways to Help Your Local Shelter. And thanks in advance for putting smiles on furry faces!

What better way to kick off the New Year than by joining the ASPCA. The truth is we need you on our team. While 2011 was a great year for helping animals, sadly our work is far from over. Puppy mill cruelty still exists, dog fighting still prevails, and there are still millions of animals sitting in shelters across America.

Now more than ever animals are counting on us to work together.

As an ASPCA Guardian, you’ll help us directly impact the lives of millions of animals across the country. From puppy mill raids to rescuing animal victims of natural disasters, you’ll be right there with us on the frontlines.

Sure, we did great work in 2011. But for just 60¢ a day, you can become an ASPCA Guardian—and together we will make 2012 even better!

ASPCA volunteer Lauri Goldman Last week, we held our annual volunteer appreciation, recognition and awards ceremony. Congratulations to ASPCA volunteer Lauri Goldman, this year’s winner of the Shining Star Award for her excellent service!

“Lauri volunteers fulltime as an Adoption Counselor,” says Diane Wilkerson, Director of the ASPCA’s Volunteer Program. “Her commitment to animal welfare and the energy she brings to our team is outstanding.”

In addition to her important role at the ASPCA Adoption Center, this past June, Lauri took her rock-star skill set to Joplin, Missouri, where she assisted the ASPCA’s Field Investigations and Response Team with cat care and on-site adoptions. Logging in over 1,500 volunteer hours this past year alone, she truly is our shining star!
