Halloween Cat Cookie

Your kitties will love the fishy flavor of these tasty treats.

1 cup white flour
1/4 cup soy flour

1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Combine water, cheese, margarine and oil.
3. Add flour and form dough.
4. Roll to 1/4 inch thick and cut with small holiday cookie cutters.
5. Bake on an ungreased cookie sheet for 20 to 25 minutes, or until golden.

Peanut Butter and Pumpkin Pooch Treats

Your dog will love the taste and enjoy the crunch!

2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1/2 cup fresh or canned pumpkin (not seasoned pie filling)
1/2 cup peanut butter
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup water as needed

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
2. Whisk together flour, baking powder, pumpkin, peanut butter and cinnamon in a bowl.
3. Add water as needed, but the dough should be stiff and dry.
4. Roll to 1/2 inch thick and cut with holiday cookie cutters.
5. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until hard.

Special Note: Remember these recipes are treats and should not replace your pet’s regular meals. Please check with your veterinarian if your pet has special dietary needs or food allergies.

But that’s not all! It wouldn’t be fair—and we certainly wouldn’t be us—if we didn’t include our furry friends. That’s why we’re offering the grand-prize winner a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to improve the lives of animals: If you win, we’ll award $10,000 to your favorite shelter!

A Tribute to the Rescue Dogs of 9/11

Friday, September 9, 2011 - 3:45pm
September 11 Dogs

This Sunday, millions of people from around the world will unite in commemorating the anniversary of 9/11. In tribute, the ASPCA would also like to honor the working dogs who risked their own lives to help on that tragic day.

“In the wake of the attacks, more than 100 search and rescue dogs along with their handlers, bravely searched the debris of Ground Zero,” says ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres. “Their courage led to the recovery of countless survivors.”

A new portrait series and book, Retrieved by Charlotte Dumas, honors 15 of the canine heroes. Covering more than a dozen states, Dumas photographed the retired rescue dogs as they spend their golden years in their preferred places—home.

To view some of the poignant portraits, visit the special New York Times photo gallery.

Subaru’s Revving Up to Help Homeless Pets for the Holidays

Thursday, November 11, 2010 - 2:45pm

Get your motors running, animal lovers! This holiday season, Subaru is once again giving back with the Subaru Share the Love Event. That means you could be helping homeless pets while driving a brand new set of wheels. For every vehicle sold or leased between November 20 and January 3, Subaru will donate $250 to the owner’s charity of choice—one of which is the ASPCA!

It’s no surprise that Subaru owners love their dogs! For the 3rd year in a row, the ASPCA has been selected as one of five charities to participate in the dealership’s holiday year end sales event—raising more than $2.5 million in total donations.

To do our part, we have united Subaru dealers with local animal welfare agencies across the country to jointly host pet adopt-a-thons, collection drives, even holiday photos with Santa Claws. Last year, thanks to these special events, more than 350 animals found forever homes and $28,000 in donations were raised for local animal agencies!

Since there’s no limit to the amount that Subaru is willing to donate, car buyers can help the ASPCA receive upwards of a million dollars (or more!)—with all donations directly impacting our efforts to fight animal cruelty. So, even if you’re not thinking about getting a new car, tell a friend, tell a loved one—tell anyone shopping around that Subaru is worth checking out!

There has never been a better time, a better season or a better reason to buy a Subaru. Visit Subaru today for more information.

Ready New York: Emergency Preparedness Pet Event

Monday, September 13, 2010 - 10:45am

While we always hope for an uneventful storm season, we know all too well that disasters, such as hurricanes, tornadoes or even wildfires, can strike quickly—and with little or no warning. At the ASPCA, we believe planning ahead is key to keeping you and your pets protected if disaster should strike. With your safety in mind, we have teamed up with Ready New York, a city-sponsored educational campaign designed to encourage New York City residents to prepare for emergencies based on three guiding principles: knowing the hazards, making a household disaster plan and stocking emergency supplies. Pets are part of the family, too, and this event will teach pet parents how to prepare for all types of emergency situations.

Bring Your Pet and Prepare!

Top Chef Masters Finalist Gets Cookin’ for the ASPCA

Wednesday, September 1, 2010 - 11:00am

Forget the rubbery hotdogs associated with most sporting events, this year's US Open in New York City is guaranteed to be a whole lot tastier. Their new Master Chef Cafe will feature dishes created exclusively for the US Open by a roster of celebrity chefs, including Tony Mantuano, Susan Feniger, Jonathan Waxman, Rick Moonen, and ASPCA supporter Carmen Gonzalez-all of whom were in the Champions' Round of the most recent season of Top Chef Masters.

Aside from providing first-rate cooking to hungry attendees, on Saturday, September 4, the chefs will compete in the Master Chef Championship Charity Competition. The chef who sells the most of their specially-created dish will win a $5,000 donation to the charity of their choice. Cooking on behalf of the ASPCA will be Carmen Gonzalez, the former chef/owner of the nationally acclaimed Carmen the Restaurant-named "one of the best restaurants in America" by Esquire Magazine.

"We are thrilled that Chef Gonzalez has chosen the ASPCA as the benefactor of her potential prize," says ASPCA's Claire McCabe, Manager of Corporate Grassroots Fundraising. "We encourage all our members to get out there and enjoy the match-and of course some delicious food!"
