How the Heck Do I Join a Twitter Party?

Monday, October 15, 2012 - 10:15am
Dog Looking At Computer

Fast. Fun. Exciting. Twitter parties are real-time conversations that involve a lot of people talking about the same thing. They’re an awesome way to learn about a specific topic, make new friends and win some pretty cool prizes! We know that joining a Twitter party can seem a bit complicated, but it’s kind of like riding a bike. It can be a little weird in the beginning, but once you get the hang of it, you feel like you've been doing it forever—and you don’t want to stop! These tips will help get you on the road to becoming a Twitter party expert in no time:

Step One: Get a Twitter account. Simply go to www.twitter.com and create a "handle" for yourself. The shorter the better since tweets are only 140 characters long.

Step Two: Follow the Twitter party hosts. If you’re planning to join an ASPCA Twitter party, make sure you’re following us on Twitter.

Step Three: Get yourself a fancy dashboard. Twitter parties are easier to follow if you use a platform like TweetChat, Tweetdeck, or Tweetgrid. But don’t let the names scare you—they each have easy tutorials to walk you through the setup. (If you’re new to Twitter, TweetChat is probably your best bet.)

Step Three: Use the party hashtag. Every Twitter party has a designated hashtag symbolized by the pound sign (#).Think of the hashtag kind of like the party invitation—you need it to get in. Follow the hashtag on your new dashboard and make sure to use it in every tweet you send or it won’t show up in the party conversation.

That’s it! Not so bad, right? Sure, it might take attending a Twitter party or two before you really get the hang of it. But that’s okay. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

Socialites, celebrities and horse lovers will soon head out to the Hamptons, Long Island’s swanky beach community, for the 37th Annual Hampton Classic Horse Show. The Hampton Classic is a world-class equestrian competition, but it’s also a hotbed of shopping, entertainment and philanthropy. For the sixth year running, the ASPCA will have a strong presence at the iconic, week-long event (August 26-September 2) to promote animal welfare and adoption, as well as to raise awareness of equine issues like horse slaughter and soring.

Visiting animal-loving celebrities and top riders—including ASPCA Equine Welfare Ambassador Georgina Bloomberg, daughter of Mayor Michael Bloomberg—will make appearances throughout the week at the ASPCA Patio and Animal Advocacy Station. We’re also hosting an adoption day on Monday, August 27, focusing on helping rescued, at-risk horses, dogs and cats find permanent homes.

We’re also thrilled that another ASPCA Equine Welfare Ambassador, Jill Rappaport of NBC’s Today, will be on hand at the Hampton Classic, personally selling her “Opt to Adopt” Rescue Me Collection of horse halters and leads. We’re honored to be the beneficiary of 15% of the proceeds from the sale of Jill’s items during the event!

Mega-Kitten Adoption Event in NYC This Weekend!

Monday, August 20, 2012 - 2:30pm
Two Kittens Looking At Camera

Smitten by kittens? Well, good news—we’re transforming our mobile adoption unit into a Kitten Karavan this weekend! The ASPCA Adoption Center has received an overwhelming number of young kittens this summer, and we’re taking them on the road in an effort to find them loving homes.

“No kitten should have to grow up in a shelter, but unfortunately that’s what we have been seeing these past few months,” says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the ASPCA’s Adoption Center. “We are urging everyone who has considered adopting to come to our Kitten Karavan this weekend and help us empty our cages.”

Adoption fees for kittens younger than four months are just $99 and $50 for all kittens and cats ages four months to three years. Plus, the Buddy System is in full swing—adopt one kitten and you can bring home another for no additional fee.

Where: St. Anthony’s Market
West Houston Street between Thompson and MacDougal Streets
             Manhattan, NY

When: Saturday, August 25 and Sunday, August 26, 1:00-5:00 P.M.

What to Bring: In order to adopt, potential adopters should bring the following: two forms of identification, one with their current address (such as a utility bill) and one government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license, passport, military ID, or non-driver ID). Adopters may also be asked to provide one personal reference, reachable by phone. The ASPCA strongly encourages all members of the household to come to the van to meet their potential pet.

Yippity-Yap—It’s Mutts Day!

Tuesday, July 31, 2012 - 10:30am
Yippity-Yap—It’s Mutts Day!

Part Terrier, part horse? This sweet mutt is currently available for adoption at the ASPCA.

July 31 has gone to the dogs—and for good reason. It’s Mutts Day! That’s right, a whole day dedicated to embracing, saving and celebrating mixed-breed dogs. We can’t think of a more deserving crew.

With the desire for designer dogs still going strong, one-of-a-kind pups are often left with the short end of the stick. What gives? Mutts rock!

They can be well-behaved and loyal family members, they’re just as talented as their purebred counterparts, and do we really need to point out how ridiculously cute they are?

If you’re the proud pet parent of a mixed breed, we hope you’re celebrating Mutts Day by spending time with your furry companion! And if you’re thinking about adding a new pet to the family, please consider giving a mixed breed a chance.

Thanks to all for making pet adoption your first option!TM

It's Take Your Dog to Work Day!

Thursday, June 21, 2012 - 1:30pm
Cute Puppy Sleeping On Desk At Work

Dog lovers and worker bees, Friday, June 22, is your day: It's Take Your Dog to Work Day! So reach out to your boss and let him or her know that Fido will be joining your morning call. Here are a few tips to help prepare your office…and win over your co-workers.

Be Considerate
Talk to your colleagues and cube-mates before the big day. Are they scared of dogs? Do they have allergies? We know dogs are cute and cuddly, but alas, they aren't for everyone. Consider bringing a baby gate and fashioning a makeshift playpen or ex-pen to keep your dog away from those who aren't fond of the fur kind.

Brush Up on Your Manners
Go over Sit, Stay and Come, and you should be off to a great start. Please note, if your little furry one still hasn't quite gotten the hang of the whole manners thing, you may want to hold off on bringing her into the office until she's honed her skills.

Prep a Doggy Daypack
Bring food, water, treats, toys, blankets, a leash and paper towels to clean up any accidents. Also, think about whether your job will require you to be away from your pup at any point and how you’ll keep her confined to your workspace.

Dog-Proof Your Workspace
This may mean taping up loose electrical cords and wires, putting markers and other toxic-but-tempting office supplies away in drawers, and removing plants, rugs and breakables.

Ed's Corner: Surf’s Up for ASPCA Dog Hero Ricochet

Thursday, June 21, 2012 - 9:00am
Dog On Surfboard

Ricochet is a “SURFice” dog for disabled surfers.

Guest blog written by Ed Sayres, ASPCA President & CEO.

Last fall, I was honored to present at the ASPCA’s annual Humane Awards Luncheon the "Dog of the Year" award to a beautiful Golden Retriever named Ricochet. The competition was steep, as we were inundated with stories of dog heroes doing extraordinary things. Despite the number of super dog candidates, Ricochet stood out because of all she has done and continues to do for people and animals in need.

Ricochet’s guardian recognized her dog's special qualities when she was a puppy being trained to be a service dog to a person with a disability. Little Ricochet's spirit held her back as a service dog: Her desire to chase birds meant that she might be too lively for life as a service dog. Instead, through happenstance Ricochet became a surfer. Not just any surfer, but a surfer who was riding waves to help others.

In 2009, Ricochet was surfing next to a quadriplegic surfer and decided to abandon her board to jump onto his as they neared the shoreline. From that moment, Ricochet became a “SURFice” dog for disabled surfers. In addition to actually surfing with disabled persons, Ricochet raises funds for more than 150 human and animal causes.

We were there to cheer Ricochet on last weekend at the 7th Annual Loews Coronado Bay Resort Surf Dog Competition in San Diego County. It was a perfect beach day with not a cloud in the sky. All types of dogs—from Pomeranians sporting sunglasses to Bulldogs wearing visors—were on the beach ready to watch the four-legged competitors.

Celebrities were on hand as well. Actor and Good Morning America contributor Cameron Mathison rode the surfboard with Ricochet during the tandem heat and came in second place despite having just learned to surf the day before. Clearly Ricochet is a good teacher.

More than 50 dogs competed and were scored on their confidence level, length of ride on the board and overall ability to "grip it and rip it." The dogs were all superstars. Ricochet won the large dog category; Abbie Girl, an Australian Kelpie, won the small dog category; and Zoey, a Jack Russell Terrier, won the tandem category.

This year's event raised $10,000 for the ASPCA. Congratulations to all of the athletescanine and human—who participated in this year's Loews Surf Dog Competition!
