Papillon being held

It’s Be Kind to Animals Week, and we’re asking everyone to donate 10 minutes to help animals in need. In fact, you can do these four simple actions right from your seat!

Join the Advocacy Brigade
Sign up for the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade to receive important alerts when we need your help lobbying for laws against animal cruelty.

Help Fight Puppy Mills
Most pet store puppies come from puppy mills. Take the pledge that you'll never shop in a store that sells puppies—even if you're just buying food or toys. This simple action will help put puppy mills out of business for good!

Show Your Virtual Support
Dedicate your Facebook status, Tweet or blog post to a homeless animal. And if you haven’t already, join us on Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Google+ and Twitter to keep track of breaking animal welfare news!

Call Your Local Shelter
Grab your cell phone and call your local animal shelter. From walking dogs to organizing fundraising events, shelters across the country could really use the help—even if you can’t make a long-term commitment.

Show Us Your Wookiee—ASPCA Celebrates Star Wars Day

Friday, May 3, 2013 - 1:00pm
Brown dog with hair covering eyes

We know our pets can sometimes seem like they’re from a galaxy far, far away, but the love we have for them is as large as any energy field. To honor Star Wars Day, we want to see your Wookiees. If your pet is a dead ringer for Chewbacca, Yoda or maybe an Ewok (like our very own adoptable Gracie) tweet us a pic!

If you’re not too busy bulls-eyeing womp rats in your T-16, celebrate Star Wars Day with us by sending your pet’s pic to @ASPCA with hashtag #StarWarsDay so we can help you show off your furry friend. We’ll be adding our favorite pics to a photo album on both Facebook and Google Plus that you can share with friends.

If you sense a disturbance in the Force today, it’s probably from all the cuteness. Check out our Wookie Facebook album!

Video: Congress Takes a "Paws" for Animals!

Tuesday, April 23, 2013 - 11:30am

We’re all counting on members of Congress to take action on animal fighting, horse slaughter and puppy mills—so to remind them of the amazing difference animals make in our lives, we arranged for them to spend a little quality time with some adorable animals at Paws for Love, a Capitol Hill Valentine’s Day event hosted by the ASPCA.

During Paws for Love, legislators and congressional staff got to canoodle with adoptable animals from area shelters and rescues. The shelters got to highlight their important work, and, best of all, some deserving animals actually found their forever homes! Check out the video below to see highlights from this aww-inspiring event.

As the ASPCA celebrates its 147th anniversary this month, we are proud to be upholding the legacy of our founder Henry Bergh, who knew the importance of having strong laws to protect animals. Elected officials need to know that animal welfare is important to their constituents, and every voice counts. Help carry on the tradition of Henry Bergh: Join the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade to tell your representatives in Congress and in your state legislature that animals deserve to be protected.

How to Celebrate Earth Day with Your Pets

Happy Earth Day, planet lovers! If you have an animal companion, you’ve got plenty of opportunities to cut down on waste, raise your pet’s quality of life and color your corner of the world green. Here are some fun ways you can celebrate Earth Day with your pet:

Spring Cleaning: Empty out the dark corners of your closets, basement and attic, but before throwing your dusty treasures away, call your local shelters and ask if they need old towels, bedding, leashes, litter boxes and pet toys.

The Power of Poop: Scoop dog poop with biodegradable bags instead of plastic bags from the grocery store. If you’re a suburbanite (or an urbanite with a lawn), do some research on doggie septic systems—they help keep your lawn free of smelly surprises and break waste down into a liquid the ground can absorb.

Garden of Delights: If you have space, consider growing your own garden for your fruit- and veggie- loving reptiles and small mammals. Before using insecticides, research mulching and other gardening practices that can help reduce the amount of insecticides and herbicides you might need.

Spot On: Should your furry love leave a little dribble (or more) on the carpeting or floor, don’t reach for the bleach. Use vinegar instead. This environment-friendly liquid can act as an effective odor-remover and can kill mold and bacteria.

Cut Back: There are plenty of small ways to cut back on energy and materials. Instead of using a blow dryer to dry your freshly bathed pet, towel or air dry her. Walk your dog to the doggie park rather than driving there. Or cut down on paper products—clean up with rags or recycled paper towels.

Are you doing something special for Earth Day? Tell us about it in the comments!

Happy Birthday to Us! ASPCA Celebrates 147th Birthday

Wednesday, April 10, 2013 - 10:30am
Empire State Building lit in orange

Grab an orange party hat and all the birthday candles you can find—today is the ASPCA’s 147th birthday! We’re thrilled to celebrate 147 years of our work for animals, beginning when our founder, Henry Bergh, first spoke up for animals in Civil War-era New York. Bergh, a gifted speaker with friends in high places, rallied people to the cause and succeeded in getting the New York State Legislature to pass the charter incorporating the ASPCA on April 10, 1866. Nine days later, the first effective anti-cruelty law was passed and, with a team of three, the ASPCA began working to enforce it. By the time Bergh died in 1888, 37 of the 38 states in the Union had passed anti-cruelty laws.

We’ve accomplished a great deal since then, and we’re working every day to assist animals nationwide. Help us celebrate by going orange for animals this April for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month, and if you’re in New York City, keep an eye out for the Empire State Building to glow orange in honor of the ASPCA on April 11!

Subaru’s Share the Love Event Raises $1.4 Million for the ASPCA

Wednesday, April 3, 2013 - 11:15am

For the fifth year in a row, the ASPCA was honored to be selected as one of five national charities to participate in the Subaru “Share the Love” winter event. During the campaign, which took place from November 2012 to January 2013, Subaru donated $250 to the new owner’s choice of five participating charities whenever a new vehicle was purchased or leased. As a result, $1.4 million was raised for the ASPCA, and 100% of the funds have been distributed as grants to animal welfare organizations in all 50 states!

Bu that’s not all! During “Share the Love,” we helped match shelters with local Subaru dealerships to host events promoting pet adoption. A record 116 events took place, resulting in more than 1,300 adoptions.

Adoption event attendees and grantees were encouraged to share pictures from the events on Twitter, and now you can join in! Help us share our love back to Subaru on behalf of all the animals they have helped: Share your love by tweeting photos of your pets and your very own Subaru vehicles using the hashtag #aspcaSTL.

Reminder for ASPCA Guardians and Founders: You may be eligible for a special offer from Subaru when you lease or purchase a new Forester, Impreza, Legacy, Outback, Tribeca, WRX, STI, BRZ or XV Crosstrek. As an added bonus, Subaru will also donate $100 to the ASPCA! Please review offer details on ASPCA.org before contacting your local Subaru dealership.

Four Tips for a Pet-Safe Easter

Friday, March 29, 2013 - 2:00pm

What’s in your Easter basket? Whether you’re celebrating Easter, Passover or the arrival of daffodils, it’s time to show our pets some extra love by keeping them safe from seasonal hazards.  Here are a few ASPCA tips for a pet-safe spring!

• Beware of Easter lilies—they can be fatal if consumed by our furry friends. We recommend leaving lilies out of Easter baskets destined for homes with cats, or using safer flower varieties as substitutes. Some pretty alternatives include Easter orchids, cacti and daisies, as well as roses and violets.

• Keep candy bunnies in check—chocolate goodies are toxic to cats, dogs and ferrets. And any treats containing xylitol, an artificial sweetener used in many candies, chewing gum and baked goods—may be toxic, too!

• Decorations, especially Easter tinsel, may look festive but can be dangerous. Kitties love to nibble on plastic grass, which can lead to serious health issues.

• Baby chicks and rabbits are not Easter gifts. While these festive babies are adorable, resist the urge to buy; they grow up fast and often require specialized care. Thousands of ex-Easter bunnies and chicks are abandoned each year when their novelty wears off.

We’ve Got Big News…

Friday, March 15, 2013 - 9:30am

Did you hear the ASPCA’s amazing news? Well, it’s true: We’re incredibly excited to be opening the first-ever behavioral rehabilitation center for dogs who have survived animal cruelty but suffer from crippling fear as a result.

The Associated Press wrote:
"People want their dog to be a friend, not afraid.
But sometimes, fear grips dogs so tightly they shake, cower, bite, growl or pee. It can be constant, painful and hard to overcome. Such dread can consume a dog when it's freed from a cage at a puppy mill or hoarder's home because that's the only life the dog has ever known.
Until now, it was up to animal shelters to ease the fears, knowing if they didn't, euthanasia was the likely alternative. But this week, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals opens its Behavioral Rehabilitation Center at St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center in Madison, N.J.”

We have so much more news to share with you about this thrilling new facility—and how we hope to use it to offer a lifeline to animals across the country—and we’ll bet you’ve got questions. We can’t wait to tell you everything, so stay tuned to ASPCA.org for all the details.

In the meantime, read the entire Associated Press story.

March 1 Is National Horse Protection Day

Thursday, February 28, 2013 - 2:00pm
Group of horses

Horses are frequently the victims of cruelty and neglect, but their suffering sometimes fails to grab headlines. In honor of National Horse Protection Day, we’d like to share just one horse rescue we’ve had the opportunity to support.

Last month, 13 emaciated horses were found living on a rural farm in Vermilion County, Illinois. The horses were all skin and bones. Two were blind, and a third was found deceased on the property.

Luckily, the Society for Hooved Animal Rescues and Emergencies (S.H.A.R.E) stepped in and began the long process of rehabilitating the horses. As soon the ASPCA heard about S.H.A.R.E’s incredible work, we gave the organization a $6,500 grant to help pay for veterinary care and food for the rescued equines.

We’re so glad to assist S.H.A.R.E in its efforts to help horses! Find out how you can get involved and be a hero for horses by reading our top 10 ways to help equines.
