1. Attend a kick-off event near you. Starting June 1, there will be $100K Challenge kick-off events at participating shelters nationwide, featuring animal adoptions, food, games and other festivities. To find out if there’s a kick-off event happening in your area, please check our Challenge events page.
2. Spread the word on Facebook! Click over to the ASPCA Facebook page to share our $100K Challenge shareable card with your friends, and encourage them to participate in kick-off weekend!

We couldn’t be more excited to get the 2013 Challenge started. Thanks for supporting local shelters in this exciting competition, and for helping to save animals’ lives nationwide!

Spread the Word: It’s National Dog Bite Prevention Week

Monday, May 20, 2013 - 2:00pm

Our dogs are our best friends, but unfortunately, we know that incidents involving dog bites are not uncommon. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, more than 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs in the U.S. each year.

May 19-25 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week, so we’d like to take this opportunity to go over some ways that you can prevent dog bites in your home and in your community.

“The absolute best way to avoid having a dog that bites a person or another dog is to ensure he or she is well socialized as a puppy,” says Dr. Pamela Reid, Vice President of the ASPCA’s Anti-Cruelty Behavior Team. “Puppies go through a period from about 6-16 weeks during which they are very impressionable and, if they have good experiences with people and dogs, are likely to grow up as confident, relaxed, friendly members of society. If the dog is integrated as a member of the family, he or she continues to meet people and maintain good social skills.”

Sadly, children are often the victims of dog bites. There are several steps you can take to teach your child the proper way to interact with dogs in order to prevent dog bites.  Here are three important tips to keep in mind:

1. Make sure that your children do not tease or go near dogs behind fences or dogs chained in yards.
2. If your child sees a dog that is loose, teach him or her to report it to an adult immediately and to avoid touching or going near the dog.
3. If a loose dog approaches your child, tell him or her not to run or scream. It is best to stand very still like a tree in this scenario.

Honoring Our Military Dogs on Armed Forces Day

Friday, May 17, 2013 - 1:00pm
German Shepherd

Tomorrow (Saturday, May 18) is Armed Forces Day, which honors Americans serving in the five branches of our military: the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard. In addition to the brave men and women who defend our country and assist others around the globe, we’d like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to another kind of hero—the U.S. military working dog, or MWD.

According to the Department of Defense, in early 2012 there were approximately 2,700 MWDs serving worldwide, keeping us safe and performing important tasks that can be difficult, if not impossible, for people. Some experts estimate that the average military dog saves 150 soldier lives during his or her career.

Thanks in part to the efforts of animal lovers like you, late last year Congress took action in the National Defense Authorization Act to protect these canine heroes. Their post-service adoption processes are being streamlined and the Department of Defense is working on authorizing a veterinary care program at no expense to taxpayers. And while it might not mean much to the dogs themselves, it means a lot to us that all retiring military dogs will receive letters of commendation for their service.

We thank the Defense Department and the U.S. Air Force, which administers the Military Working Dog Program from its Lackland base in San Antonio, Texas, for recognizing that our government’s commitment to these amazing animals’ well-being must extend beyond their period of military service.

Show your appreciation for the selfless service of our canine heroes by sharing this article on Twitter with the hashtag #MilitaryDogs.

Shelter Dogs, Cats Now Colorado’s Official State Pet

Tuesday, May 14, 2013 - 1:30pm
Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper

As you’ve probably figured out, we love shelter pets! Rescuing an animal from a shelter saves lives, and you get lots of unconditional love in return. That’s why we’re so happy to see the entire state of Colorado put them front and center!

Yesterday, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, accompanied by his own rescue dog, Sky, signed into law a bill making shelter dogs and cats the state’s official pet, The Denver Post reports. The bill, “Concerning the designation of dogs and cats that are adopted from Colorado Animal Shelters and rescues as the state pets,” was proposed by schoolchildren and signed into law at the Denver Animal Shelter.

Other states have chosen a specific dog breed to honor as state pet, but Colorado is honoring any dog or cat adopted from a shelter! How awesome is that?

We know our pets can sometimes seem like they’re from a galaxy far, far away, but the love we have for them is as large as any energy field. To honor Star Wars Day, we want to see your Wookiees. If your pet is a dead ringer for Chewbacca, Yoda or maybe an Ewok (like our very own adoptable Gracie) tweet us a pic!

If you’re not too busy bulls-eyeing womp rats in your T-16, celebrate Star Wars Day with us by sending your pet’s pic to @ASPCA with hashtag #StarWarsDay so we can help you show off your furry friend. We’ll be adding our favorite pics to a photo album on both Facebook and Google Plus that you can share with friends.

If you sense a disturbance in the Force today, it’s probably from all the cuteness. Check out our Wookie Facebook album!

Video: Congress Takes a "Paws" for Animals!

Tuesday, April 23, 2013 - 11:30am
Girl facing dog smiling

We’re all counting on members of Congress to take action on animal fighting, horse slaughter and puppy mills—so to remind them of the amazing difference animals make in our lives, we arranged for them to spend a little quality time with some adorable animals at Paws for Love, a Capitol Hill Valentine’s Day event hosted by the ASPCA.

During Paws for Love, legislators and congressional staff got to canoodle with adoptable animals from area shelters and rescues. The shelters got to highlight their important work, and, best of all, some deserving animals actually found their forever homes! Check out the video below to see highlights from this aww-inspiring event.

As the ASPCA celebrates its 147th anniversary this month, we are proud to be upholding the legacy of our founder Henry Bergh, who knew the importance of having strong laws to protect animals. Elected officials need to know that animal welfare is important to their constituents, and every voice counts. Help carry on the tradition of Henry Bergh: Join the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade to tell your representatives in Congress and in your state legislature that animals deserve to be protected.

How to Celebrate Earth Day with Your Pets

Monday, April 22, 2013 - 12:00pm

Happy Earth Day, planet lovers! If you have an animal companion, you’ve got plenty of opportunities to cut down on waste, raise your pet’s quality of life and color your corner of the world green. Here are some fun ways you can celebrate Earth Day with your pet:

Spring Cleaning: Empty out the dark corners of your closets, basement and attic, but before throwing your dusty treasures away, call your local shelters and ask if they need old towels, bedding, leashes, litter boxes and pet toys.

The Power of Poop: Scoop dog poop with biodegradable bags instead of plastic bags from the grocery store. If you’re a suburbanite (or an urbanite with a lawn), do some research on doggie septic systems—they help keep your lawn free of smelly surprises and break waste down into a liquid the ground can absorb.

Garden of Delights: If you have space, consider growing your own garden for your fruit- and veggie- loving reptiles and small mammals. Before using insecticides, research mulching and other gardening practices that can help reduce the amount of insecticides and herbicides you might need.

Spot On: Should your furry love leave a little dribble (or more) on the carpeting or floor, don’t reach for the bleach. Use vinegar instead. This environment-friendly liquid can act as an effective odor-remover and can kill mold and bacteria.

Cut Back: There are plenty of small ways to cut back on energy and materials. Instead of using a blow dryer to dry your freshly bathed pet, towel or air dry her. Walk your dog to the doggie park rather than driving there. Or cut down on paper products—clean up with rags or recycled paper towels.

Are you doing something special for Earth Day? Tell us about it in the comments!
