ASPCA Transport Hits the Road…Again!

Vet Examines Dog

Animals receive quick medical exams.

Guest Blog by Kristen Limbert ASPCA Animal Relocation Manager

We're at it again! As part of our monthly transport program, the ASPCA just relocated 33 more dogs from Louisiana to New Jersey. In partnership with the Louisiana SPCA, AnimalWorks and St. Hubert's Animal Welfare Center, we're able to bring a group of southern dogs to the Northeast, where they are more likely to get adopted—and we can do it every month!

A unique part of this transport is our partnership with AnimalWorks, a Tennessee spay/neuter group. Located at the trip's halfway point, it is the perfect pit stop. Our transport team is greeted by staff and volunteers, who help us offload all the dogs, as well as walk and play with them, giving them a nice reprieve from the cages on the truck.

Vets and vet students are also on hand to provide quick medical exams—checking for any signs of illness, injury or stress that would preclude a dog from making the rest of the journey. So far, all the dogs have handled the trip beautifully!

We have no doubt that this group of canines will find loving homes just as quickly as our April batch did—and we sure are happy help give them that chance.

Hover Cat Youtube Video

It's a bird. It's a plane. No…it's a Hover Cat! Special thanks to ABC's Good Morning America anchor Dan Harris for making a soon-to-be-viral YouTube video that features adoptable pets. The video also stars Dan's adopted cat, George, whose incredible talents spring to life as soon as Dan leaves for work. This cat seriously knows how to keep a beat!

While the cuteness can't be ignored, neither can the video's ultimate message: Adopting a pet is awesome!  So go ahead, take a peek…and be sure to share! It's a great way to encourage more folks to adopt.

Thanks again, Dan!

Lights, Camera, Action for ASPCA Dogs!

Monday, June 4, 2012 - 2:00pm

What can we say? Our office pooches are pretty darn cute. You know, the kind of cute that gets you noticed. Just check them out in Banana Republic's new video showcasing the colorful Trina Turk Collection. We hate to brag, but our rescued canines look pretty awesome in paisley.

Banana Republic and the ASPCA created the video to increase awareness of pet adoption. After all, who wouldn't want a pup who likes to play dress-up with Trina Turk scarves?  If you can't wait to play dress-up yourself, "like" Banana's Facebook page for the chance to shop the collection early, on June 6.

Interested in adopting? Visit our Virtual Adoption Center to scout out available animals at the ASPCA, find a shelter in your area or learn more about pet adoption.

Does Your Pet Have Talent? Prove It!

Tuesday, May 22, 2012 - 1:15pm

Who says you can’t teach an adopted pet new tricks? Certainly not Uggie! Ten years before capturing the hearts of moviegoers around the world, The Artist's Uggie was a shelter pup. Yep! In fact, he was returned by two guardians who were unprepared for the little Jack Russell's boundless energy. But dog trainer Omar Von Muller saw something special in the playful pup. He fell in love with Uggie’s outgoing, mischievous behavior—and it’s been a perfect match ever since.

Enter Your Pet in Our Talent Contest!
We know talent comes in many shapes and sizes…and species. Whether your pet is a dog who can high-five or a cat who can sing, we want to see your furry, feathered or finned family member looking like a star. Submit your pet's best trick on video and you’ll be entered to win an Artist poster signed by Uggie! Plus, winners will be featured on the ASPCA website.

Enter your pet today!

P.S. The Artist was recently re-released in theaters. Catch Uggie on the big screen while you still can!

Calling All Foodies: Little Lola Is Your Kindred Spirit

Friday, May 18, 2012 - 3:45pm
Lola the Chihuahua at ASPCA Adoption Center

Hello! Do you have a snack? A dog treat? Just a small, delicious morsel? Could you maybe just give that to Lola? OK, you guys are now BFFs for life.

It's really that simple with our crazy-adorable lap dog Lola, who has been patiently waiting at our Adoption Center for longer than we really understand. A Chihuahua through and through, Lola wants to sit on your lap and be unwaveringly loyal and close to you. (Especially if you have something tasty for her.)

Frankly, we're not sure how anyone could resist her sweet face, tiny paws and penchant for affection. Maybe people are a little wary of her age—nine—but that’s barely middle-aged for a Chihuahua, and she has all the energy and spirit of a pup of three. Like most Chi Chis, she needs a little time to get to know a person before falling in love with them, but that amount of time is really short. (It's basically however long it takes you to produce a treat.)

There's a song in Damn Yankees that goes, "Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets," and that's been true for her at the ASPCA Adoption Center—but the one thing our Lola really wants, to go home at last, remains a wish unfulfilled.

Can you give her the life she deserves? (And can you hook her up with lots of treats? Seriously, she'll do anything you ask. For treats.) Learn more about her on her page and please share her on Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. If you think you’d like to adopt her, please call our Animal Placement department in NYC at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4900.

Thank you for helping Lola find a family!

Ed’s Corner: Will You Coupon for Animals?

Friday, May 11, 2012 - 5:00pm
Ed Sayres

Are you a bargain shopper extraordinaire? If so, have I got an idea for you! How about putting your shopping prowess to the test by purchasing supplies for homeless animals?

Animal shelters and rescue groups often have a need for pet food, toys, pet care supplies (leashes, collars, litter and litter boxes), bedding and operational supplies (cleaning products, garbage bags, newspapers, paper towels and office supplies). The recipient organizations can then use funds that otherwise would have been allocated to supplies for expenses such as veterinary care. Not all of these items always have to be new: Shelters are often very grateful for towels and sheets that are gently used, but clean.

Since organizations have varying needs, it’s always best to check with your local animal shelter or rescue group first to see what types of things they can use. For example, many shelters prefer to give the animals in their care the same food on a regular basis and might not have storage capacity to accept food they do not use, or they might only use environmentally-friendly cleaning products. Often this information is posted on their website, but, if not, a quick phone call can let you know whether the shelter welcomes specific items.

If you are an Extreme Couponer—or a seasoned coupon-clipper—and you decide to use your shopping expertise to help homeless animals, please share your pictures with us! Take photos of your shopping trip, the items you purchased, and the moment you arrived at the animal shelter to present your donation. Submissions will be accepted through this tab on the ASPCA's Facebook page through June 1. We’ll also be taking to our Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest pages, and our blog, to feature how much you’ve donated and show the country your generosity. The top five submissions will receive a special oversized ASPCA shopping tote full of swag.

Congratulations to the 2012 $100K Challenge Contestants!

Friday, April 20, 2012 - 3:15pm
Ed Sayres, ASPCA President & CEO

It’s been an exciting week at the ASPCA, since we just announced the 50 finalists of the 2012 ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge. These 50 groups, all animal welfare organizations, now move on to the next round of our competition. Every contestant is ultimately a winner because every group will be working to save more animals’ lives. Those competitors who have the biggest increases in lives saved over the same time period last year—as well as those that do the best job of engaging their communities—will be eligible to share in the more than $500,000 in prize grants we are awarding for their life-saving work.

Shelters in every region of the country are entered in the challenge, and they need your support. Wouldn’t it be nice if the shelter where you adopted your dog and cat won lots of money to save more pets like yours? Even if you won’t be able to adopt a dog or cat this year, you can help by promoting your favorite shelter through social media during the competition or by telling your friends to consider adopting their next pet from that shelter. I hope you all will pick a shelter to support. You can find out more at www.aspca.org/100K.

Good luck to all of the 2012 $100K Challenge contestants!
