Humane Society of Boulder Valley saved 2,640 dogs and cats and won a $100,000 grant in the ASPCA $100K Challenge.

Today is the day, people! The grand prize winner of the ASPCA $100K Challenge is…Humane Society of Boulder Valley in Boulder, CO! The $100K Challenge is a national contest designed to inspire animal shelters across the country to save more lives. Total lives saved: 48,779 in three months—7,362 MORE animals than last year!

Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center Receives Community Engagement Award

Tuesday, November 30, 2010 - 3:00pm

Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center saved more than 1,000 animals during the $100K Challenge.

We are very excited to announce that Tallahassee-Leon Community Animal Service Center (TLCASC) in Tallahassee, FL, a municipal agency that cares for 11,000 animals annually, has won the ASPCA Community Engagement Award and a $25,000 grant! The award is part of the $100K Challenge, a national contest designed to inspire animal shelters across the country to save more lives.

The ASPCA selected TLCASC for the Community Engagement Award because of its creative and comprehensive “Reach for the Stars” communications campaign, which recruited dozens of local officials and celebrities to act as “agents” for animals in need of new homes. The campaign included an all-night adopt-a-thon and celebrity-themed video segments.

During the Challenge, TLCASC was everywhere from local fairs to college campuses, and kept the community in-the-know with fun blog posts from Daisy, canine reporter, who shared individual animal successes as well as exciting milestones. Together, staff, volunteers and the TLCASC community saved 1,288 animals from August 1 through October 31—an increase of 335 lives saved over the same time period in 2009.

Congratulations to the staff and volunteers of TLCASC, and thank you for creating such an amazing model of community engagement to save more lives!

Photo Contest: What’s Your ASPCA $100K Challenge Story?

Monday, October 4, 2010 - 11:00am

So you’ve heard us crooning week after week about the incredible work of our $100K Challenge contestants—those shelters that are coming up with innovative ways to motivate their communities and save more animals’ lives. At stake? Oh, just a cool $100K for the shelter that saves the most animals.

So far, our Challengers are kicking some serious butt, but we know they aren’t doing it alone. Without the public adopting cats and dogs in record numbers, the Challenge wouldn’t be such a smashing success. Which is why we want to hear from you—the public!

Have you adopted or fostered an animal from one of our contestant shelters during the months of the Challenge? Did you volunteer for one of our Challengers? Or perhaps you were reunited with your pet at a Challenge shelter? If so, we want to hear your story! Submit a photo and brief overview of your experience, and you could help your local shelter win a $1,000 grant.

An ASPCA jury will select 20 finalists based on the quality of the photo submissions and how well the stories demonstrate the Challenge’s mission to save lives. The public will vote for six grand prize winners, and the participating shelters of those six winners will each win a $1,000 prize! The six winning entrants will receive a snazzy ASPCA water bottle, and the 20 finalists will take home a prized ASPCA t-shirt. Anyone who has adopted, fostered, volunteered, or reclaimed an animal at a Challenge shelter during the months of August, September, or October 2010 is eligible to enter. So submit today! The deadline for entries is November 14 at midnight EST, and winners will be announced on ASPCA.org by December 7.

Not sure if your local shelter is participating in the $100K Challenge? Check out our full list of contestants! Then share the contest with your friends and neighbors by posting the link on Facebook or Twitter.

Saving Animals’ Lives: $100K Challenge Update

Thursday, August 26, 2010 - 10:45am

We’re already three weeks into the ASPCA $100K Challenge, and our contestants are showing some great adoption numbers and creative promotions to save more animals’ lives. Check out some of the highlights below, and stay tuned in the coming weeks to learn who else is kicking butt and taking names in the race to the $100K finish.

McKamey Animal Care & Adoption Center in Chattanooga, TN, celebrated the start of the Challenge by distributing free collars and tags to promote the importance of proper ID for pets. “We are working to increase our return to owner (RTO) rates,” reports McKamey. “So often we receive loving animals who we know must have families, but we cannot reunite them with their pet parents because they do not have identification.”

Speaking of RTOs, the Kent County SPCA of Camden, DE, returned a staggering 43 dogs and 3 cats to their pet parents during the first week of the Challenge. Some great numbers are also coming out of Colorado: As of August 13, a mere two weeks into the Challenge, the Humane Society of Boulder Valley had adopted out 118 cats and 65 dogs—“an increase of 49 animals since the same time last year,” they report.

No rest for the weary at the Greater Birmingham Humane Society. When the Alabama shelter was closed one day last week, the organization still managed to turn in some exceptional results. That day, GBHS says, “the Lone Ranger, as we call our only veterinarian here, completed 26 spay/neuter surgeries and eight dentals!”

We’re consistently wowed by the innovative ways the Challengers are getting their communities involved in the action to find homes for needy pets. On August 7, Maui Humane Society assembled a team of 10 adoptable dogs for Pet Night at the Na Koa Ikaika Maui baseball game, where ticket proceeds benefitted the shelter. Meanwhile, the SPCA of Wake County in Raleigh, NC, got out some its favorite animal costumes and held an epic photo shoot with its Pit Crew.

$100K Challengers Break Adoption Records

Wednesday, August 11, 2010 - 3:15pm

Sunday, August 1, marked the official kickoff of the $100K ASPCA Challenge, and so far, participating shelters are reporting record adoptions and community involvement. Contestants reported more adoptions in one day than ever before, more visitors to their shelters, and more traffic on their websites and Facebook pages.

How'd they do it? The 46 participating shelters are celebrating the Challenge with parties and promotions galore. Browse our list of events, which include:

  • Celebrations at malls, baseball stadiums and brew houses
  • Adoption specials, waived fees and themes like "Find Your Cougar or Silver Fox"
  • Puppy and kitten extreme makeovers

The Challenge contestants' ingenuity promises to save thousands of lives this fall. Last year, from August to October, these 46 shelters saved 45,603 animals' lives. This year, they're each working to save at least 300 more lives in the same period, and they're off to a great start.

Contestants are even blogging about their successes—stop by the Community Engagement blog daily to follow the action!

Meet the Challengers: 50 Shelters Save Lives to Win

Thursday, July 1, 2010 - 2:30pm

In April, we put out a call to animal welfare leaders across the country to enter the ASPCA $100K Challenge to increase pet adoptions and save more animals’ lives. This friendly competition aims to inspire innovation and, to sweeten the deal, we’re offering $125,000 in prizes! Over the next two months, we’ll introduce you to all 50 of the selected contestants, but to get started, here’s a peek at our first six challengers!

  • Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) & Helping Animals Live On (HALO) Phoenix, AZ: AAWL and HALO are loyal partners in the fight against pet overpopulation in Phoenix and Maricopa County. Above all, these organizations engage their community by spreading the word that “shelter pets are not broken, undesirable animals—they are victims of circumstances beyond their control.”

  • Humane Society of North Texas (HSNT), FT Worth, TX: A multi-faceted organization, HSNT brings a “can-do” attitude to the Challenge as well as several unique adoption events, like this summer’s Extreme Mutt Makeover. Long-term goals include constructing a new facility to incorporate adoptions and educational needs.

  • City of San Jose Animal Care Center (ACS), San Jose, CA: The folks at ACS describe their organization as “big, busy and humane.” A young, full-service shelter, this contender has made a big splash with its new Feral Freedom Program. ACS’s commitment to trap-neuter-return (TNR) makes them a tough competitor in this Challenge.

  • South Suburban Humane Society (SSHS), Chicago Heights, IL: What makes SSHS one to watch? The organization has a dedicated volunteer base and a compassionate staff, and rigorously promotes low-cost spay/neuter. Taking home the grand prize will facilitate renovating kennels and cat housing and the construction of a new “kitten nursery.”

  • The SPCA of Wake County, Raleigh, NC: The SPCA of Wake County wants you to know one thing: “Our pets may or may not be purebred—but they are pure fun.” The organization’s staff loves what they do and spends their days brainstorming innovative solutions. Spreading the word with a “no-holds-barred mentality” makes this contestant a top pick.

  • Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS), Jacksonville, FL: Sometimes the wise elders hold the secret, and JHS has been saving animals’ lives since 1885. The organization engages its community by traditional and nontraditional means and believes “an animal can have a life-changing effect on a person by showing them a love they never knew existed.”

Check in next week, when we’ll introduce you to our next six challengers!
