Neglected Senior Dog Needs a Hero!

Thursday, June 28, 2012 - 1:45pm
Adopt Britney ASPCA Senior Dog

Not every visitor to the ASPCA Adoption Center in NYC sees something special in Britney, but a local artist did. Whoever adopts this sweet senior gets to take home a beautiful portrait of their new dog!

The artist chose Britney to paint instead of the hundreds of other animals in our care, and we think we know why. Britney’s life has been so hard.

When she came to us through Humane Law Enforcement last year, Britney was in lots of pain, suffering from multiple untreated conditions. But with ASPCA veterinary care and attention, she is now as healthy as possible. In her opinion—and ours—Britney is ready to find her forever home.

For now, Britney spends her days quietly sleeping in her habitat until it’s her turn to be walked. She seems to know that she doesn’t belong here. And yet, it’s been more than 200 days since she came to us. (Only one dog has been with us longer: Lady.)

Britney is not a difficult dog to care for. At 12, this low-key lady loves everyone she meets and wants nothing more than to sleep peacefully in a comfortable spot in a loving home. She’s good on walks, though she does bark at other dogs she meets along the way, and often lags behind to take in the scenery.

But Britney does need special food (at least for now) and twice-daily arthritis medication, likely for the rest of her life. That’s why she needs a really special adopter to make her golden years golden.

If you live in a six-and-up home and have a special place in your heart for seniors, this sweet Lab gal really needs you! She’s been through so much. Please share her on Facebook and Twitter, and help us give her a happy ending!

To adopt Britney, please contact our Animal Placement department in NYC at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4900.

Is there a way to send a donation to keep her alive until someone takes her? I have three rescues now, but want to help her and lady. Please do not put her down.

I sent in 35dollars for britanys meds. I know this is not allot, but that is all I can do for now. If I did not already have a house full, I would take her.

was she saved ? please tell me this pup has a home ... wasn't sure of her location ? I have a senior who's the best - so sweet and funny and train - she taught my pomeraian, who was 10 months old at the time of his rescue.

I wish i lived in a place where they allowed dogs. I would take her into our loving home in a heart beat & shower her with lots of love.

I think it is time we all CALLED ASPCA and demanded an answer as to why they are not responding. SO many have offered to adopt her and also help with her care - and nothing from ASPCA! They are my pet insurance people. I am calling them tomorrow. I think EVERY person on this needs to call them and find out why they are not responding. It angers me that this little girl is waiting patiently and no one has her "back" from ASPCA it doesn't appear.

Please give us an update on how she is doing. Id love to donate money in her name, how can I do this?

I just wanted to tell all of you kind hearted people willing to take this sweet dog that I adore and respect you. I know that I could not care for a senior dog because it just breaks my heart to think about letting them go when it is their time. I love dogs so much and dog lovers even more.

You need to call to inquire about adoption, as it states at the top: To adopt Britney, please contact our Animal Placement department in NYC at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4900.

Unfortunately, the ASPCA cannot be counted on for these matters. In my experience, they are far more interested in raising funds than they are in placing animals. Once went to the adoption center to see a cat that had been placed 11months earlier and still appeared on the site. Inexcusable for any organization. Especially one this well funded. Send your donations to Best Friends or your local shelter.

If I was closer I would sure adopt her. I have 2 dogs a a cat, all adopted. Wish I was close. I am from Argentina! I Love ASPCA, wish in my country we had guys like you!

I too rescued an elderly dog from the shelter. She was in a terrible state when I got her. I cannot tell you how much joy she brought to our household and I loved her so very dearly and she me. I just lost her after almost 4 years with her but I am so happy she died in my arms and not in the pound lonely and confused. She was remembered by my friends and family nit the case if she had been euthanized in the pound. No one would have mourned her. Please don't overlook senior dogs theme little senior girl played like a puppy.even though she was ,riddled with arthritis she knew she had been rescued. She was a little 3lb girl when we rescued then Shen gained weight and was 7 lbs when she passed. I love my little Minnie xxx

Yes I would love to know if anything is happening in helping her get to her new home, or if I can donate to help get her to her new home. There has no been one update at all on her.

This is on the adoption page: If you’re interested: Please call our Animal Placement department in New York City at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4900. Those of you who have expressed interest should probably give that number a try. =)

Please call our Animal Placement department in New York City at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4900. It is one thing to say you will adopt her on this blog, but you need to call!!!!!!

Its a shame that no one in NY has a heart big enough to adopt this sweet dog. It seems that so many people say "I'll take her" or..."I would, but..." Makes me sad. Personally I think the major roadblock here is that you wont adopt her to a home with other dogs. Most people looking for a first time pet are far less likely to adopt an older dog..where as people who already have and love dogs would be. I think that perhaps the fault here is actually that of ASPCA.. work on socialization. You can't tell me she doesn't, or couldn't learn to get along with another dog. I hope she finds the loving home she deserves.

Did she find a home yet???

I am reading comments from people that wish to adopt Britney and are getting no reply from you, the ASPCA. What is the problem??? This is terrible and I will not donate to an organization that operates in this manner and cannot respond and answer the people trying to help one of your dogs for adoption. I think you better get on the ball and take care of this situation immediately....

Send her to me! I would love to have her at my home. I'm disabled to a extent and a low key pet is perfect for me. She can lay on the couch with me and watch tv.

What happen to BRITNEY?? Can you PLEASE post something. I need to know this was not a ploy/bad trick to just get donations. Please UPDATE!!

It is ridiculous and pathetic that this dog would be posted on the ASPCA website and no one from there woulde bother to look at the comments to see if anyone was asking questions or interested. I know not all ASPCA are bad, but I have heard many stories of the ASPCA being all about the money and it sounds like this old girl certainly brought in some donations. It is sad that they don't bother to follow up on their posts! This why I tell everyone to donate to their local shelters and rescues, where you can see that the money really does go directly to the care of the animals. I pray that the ASPCA is not using Britney, this beautiful old girl as a scam or ploy to get donations. If so, there will be a day when they will have to look their maker in the eye and explain what they did!

I love the fact that I see so many willing people to help. I often feel like I am the only pet lover with a heart so big, it seems like I have more room for animals than people! I only have 2 dogs, a boxer and a Lab/Pit (or something) mix,(each 60lbs+) and adopted both of them. My mix, Tip... he is aggressive and I can not add to my household right now. I really hope someone can help this poor dog, if only dogs could talk... I'm sure she could give one bittersweet story about her life before and after being rescued. I also am very grateful for everyone who has taken care of her up until now, getting her back on her feet! It broke my heart yesterday riding out into the country seeing starving, skinny dogs roaming the roads trying to find food and knowing I wasn't around a restaurant and had no food in my car to give it. I almost broke out in tears! GOD BLESS EACH AND EVERY ONE OF YOU!! And don't let anyone tell you, EVER, that you can't make a difference! I currently monetarily contribute to the ASPCA and St. Jude Children's Hospital, and I couldn't be more proud that I am, somehow, helping someone, somewhere. Sorry so long, I just had to get that out :) Thank you all for being such great animal lovers!! (:

I am not in a position to take Britney but hope she finds a good home. Someone please adopt her!

Hi Everyone. I called the adoption center in NY and learned that Britney was adopted. Yay! Apparently the ASPCA only updates facebook and website every thursday which is why we haven't seen the udpate yet. I am going to follow up with media relations to raise concern of the fact that they are not engaging their prospective adopters in social media dialogue which is a big no no in my book. I will let you all know what transpires.

I am doing a ride for the humane society...i love animals.just wanted to say that i makes me feel good knowing that people care about our 4-legged friends.this story has shown this to be true.I would like to have Britny be a part of my life.I live in Canaan Maine. My cell # is 207-612-6435.please call me if she still needs a home.I will come to get right away. Thanks,Gary Runnells

How do we find out if she has her forever loving home?

I am so excited that Britney was adopted.....I know she had a long wait and it would be terrific if her new owners would follow up with a 'Happy Tails' report.

Check out a photo of a happy Britney with her new dad on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/aspca. Such a happy ending :)

Has she been adopted yet? Please let us know.
