Love at First Paw

Tara Munoz had never shared her home with a cat before, but when she and her husband visited the ASPCA Adoption Center in Manhattan, she quickly met her first feline match. The couple adopted a friendly cat named Caesar, and it was love at first paw. She shared the following story with us:

In December 2012, my family and I adopted Caesar from the ASPCA in New York City. He adapted very well to our home, and we think he is the "purrfect" addition.

The adoption process was very thorough, informative and the volunteers were great. When we were looking at the cats inside the cat room, Caesar came down from his post and up to my husband. He rubbed against him and offered his paw—it was the cutest thing I have ever seen. Caesar stole my heart from that moment on. He chose us!

Caesar loves to play with his toys, and he always makes us laugh the way he plays with his scratching post. I've never had a cat before, but my husband had cats throughout most of his childhood life. Adopting Caesar has definitely been a wonderful learning and loving experience. Caesar has brought me joy and happiness that I could never imagine.

Thanks to the ASPCA for their service. Caesar is the best!

That is a great story about Ceasar - I love happy adoption stories. All of our animals have been adopted and they just know in their hearts that you have saved them and will love them. We now have 2 cats and 2 dogs, the baby lab was not from a shelter, as we got him from a reliable breeder and he is a joy and plays well with the cats and the older black labrador. I would also like to point out to people to please look at the black cats and dogs at shelters, for some reason they are overlooked and they are the best dogs/cats that we have adopted. There needs to be more advertising about black dogs and cats in the media. Best of luck with Caesar and thank you for letting him pick you, what a smart cat

You are right about black cats and dogs. 16 years ago I adopted a black shelter cat who had been in a group foster home from birth to 3 years old. In the cage she was balled up in a corner and did not lift her head to look at anyone. She was extremely shy and it took about three years before she would actually sit next to me. She lived to the ripe old age of 18,until last May, outliving her younger "brother". I am so glad I had her! Now I have two litter mates, little boys full of energy, curiosity and affection at eight months old. I feel so blessed...all of my cats have been rescue/shelter animals. But, future cat/dog owners, remember the black ones, the deaf ones, the blind ones, the three-legged ones!

I have just lost my black cat after 17 years, He found me at a shelter and has been my best friend ever since. Black "ROCKS" I miss him very much and have a big hole in my heart right now. If I get another cat I ope it is black and is as loving as my Blackjack was for all those years. Rest in Peace my friend.

It's immpossible to find a cat like your lost buddy. Every cat has a different personality and while they may look alike or identical they each think and act differently. You just have to learn to love them as they are. The more love you give them the more love they give back!!

I urge everyone to consider a black cat or dog. I went to shelter after one of my cats passed away. As i was looking at the cats the sweetest black kitty started rubbing on his cage bars and sticking his paw out through the bars. Trying to get me to pet him and i did they took him out of the cage and well he now has permanet furever home. I know have 2 black kitties the 2nd once was hit by ac ar and i saved his life taking him to my vet.

I have always had black animals, cats and dogs, even the guinea pig. I never thought twice about it until my Avon lady said one day, "It is very strange that you like black animals so much." You are right though; most of the animals that are at the shelters a long time are dark-colored for some reason. I wonder why this is?

It is great!! Cats are so loving! My husband and I share our lives with three wonderful cats that have been with us for 10 years and they are nothing but pure love and great enjoyment :) so loyal and caring for our needs too - wow - SO glad you found Caeser :)

Just by accident we met a women who rescued street cats and had a little one-year old who needed a home. We already had two cats and were not looking for a third, however we couldn't bear the thought of this little guy being put back on the street or in a shelter where he might be put down, so we took him in. He has turned out to be the love our lives. He was very timid at first, but has become increasingly self-confident. If you give a cat time and space they will come around. He is such a sweet, playful boy! Patients pays off!

This is so sweet.i,also adopted 2 weeks ago.a scared n timid cat she would hide n when I did get to her she would just hover in ur arms.she has now settled in.her n my other chase each other n play.she still alittle shy.all she needs is love n some patience

I never had a cat growing up. My family were dog people. For the last 30 years we have shared our homes with rescued cats. I have loved every single one of them. They have all been so loving even the shy ones. But my favorites have been the black ones. I do not know why but they all seemed to have wonderful personalities!

Wonderful story. God bless you Tara Munoz.

We recently adopted 2 cats from our local Humane Society Shelter because our 15 year old snowshoe siamese died from kidney failure. We waited several weeks, but our remaining cat seemed sad and depressed. When we visited the shelter we went into a room where they had cats who were 'ready'. A number of cats came to look at us and we decided on a young black and white girl. I kept looking at a couple of older cats who seemed to have given up on getting adopted. But I really liked a gray tabby who seemed like he was quiet and shy. The shelter was having a 'special' so we were able to afford to take both kitties. They are now well adjusted to our home and have made friends with our older cat. Everyone is doing well-we will have to put our little girl on a diet soon, she is still finding it surprising that there is food whenever she wants to eat (we were told that she had been a stray). Our 'new' boy has turned out to be a wonderful cat. He is playful and very intelligent. He lets the little girl groom him and plays easily with our older cat. I am thrilled with both our cats and hope they will be with us for a very long time.

SI TIENEN MUCHA RAZON ACERCA DE LOS GATOS NEGROS, YO REALMENTE ME GUSTA ADOPTAR NO COMPRAR; LOS ANIMALITOS RESCATADOS NECESITAN MAS DE NUESTRA AYUDA, PUES HAN SUFRIDO MUCHO, NO HAY QUE MIRAR SI SON BONITOS O FEOS, SI SON NEGROS O BLANCOS, LO QUE HAY QUE MIRAR ES QUE NECESITAN AYUDA Y SOLO NOSOTROS SE LA PODEMOS BRINDAR.

What a great story. It is hard to go in a place like that. You feel so sad because you can't take ALL of them. I always cry after I leave ( for the ones still waiting to go home).

not only do kitties in shelters need help but the homeless ones that live on the streets with no families and never know where there meals if any will come from so as a pet lover i took in 16 homeless cats that lived with no hope for a future other than being pick up by animal services and being euthenized just because they were homeless and gave them a future today they are healthy and happy. most people will not take black cats in but i am happy to say the 16 cats i have they are black, black&white, orange, gray, and white turkish van cats as well so people should consider taking not only cats from shelters but the homeless ones with no future as well

I LOVE black cats!!!! Adopted 2 black brothers from a rescue spot and then adopted 2 black sisters from an individual that worked at my vets. Her grandmother had the mother & she was trying to find a forever-home for the kittens. I also have 2 black & white cats that belonged to extended family members & needed homes when the originial owners became unable to care for them. Just recently I also took in a tortorise shell cat that was "dropped off" in my neighborhood. She is the sweetist cat but has gotten chubbly because she can't believe that there is always food available. Yes, that makes 7 cats but I love them all!

I love all of these stories about cats. We have one princess...SHE adopted us. Love her so much! Love ALL cats!

So glad Tara and her husband's hearts! My new adopted cat Tristan also chose me at the shelter and helped me heal a broken heart; story at http://www.indefenseofcats.com/blog.html

I adopted a six year old Tabby Persian cat on June 9, 2012 from a local shelter. She is now the Princess of my home and great company for my male Persian cat. Tabby Persian cats often sit for a long time waiting for homes because some people think they are too ordinary. My Tabby Persian is a Blue Silver Gold Tabby Persian and a rare color. She is active and sweet and playful. I don't consider her ordinary at all! I'm so happy to find her!

I think it's funny how people suddenly love cats when they hear a heart-warming story about one, but wouldn't give it a second thought about abandoning one because they are moving or the cat gets pregnant or they simply don't want it anymore because it isn't cute, and assume it can fend for itself. Shame on you!

Caesar is so handsome! I'm so glad he found a loving home, and that his new Mom is gettig to experience the joy and fun of having a cat as a family member.

cute my cat lays like that a lot its to cute!!!!!!

Congratulations Caesar!
