It’s Time to End Walking-Horse Abuse

Tennessee Walking Horses desperately need your help. These majestic and gentle-natured creatures are a breed of horse famous for their distinctive, smooth, high-stepping walk. Sadly, a cruel and illegal procedure called “soring” is all too frequently used to elicit an exaggerated movement, called the “big lick,” in order to win prizes at horse shows.

Soring is the gruesome practice of using chemicals and painful devices to injure a horse’s front limbs, making any contact with the ground so painful that the horse quickly jerks up his legs to relieve the pressure. Soring causes such intense pain that its victims often cannot stand for several days afterward.

Although soring was banned nationwide in 1970, inadequate legal penalties and lax enforcement have allowed this cruel practice to continue. A new bill, H.R. 6388, will address these inadequacies by amending the federal Horse Protection Act and improving protections for horses from soring, and we need your help in building support for this critical legislation!

What You Can Do
Please contact your U.S. representative and urge him/her to cosponsor H.R. 6388 and support strong amendments to the Horse Protection Act to better protect horses from soring.

I lived in the middle TN area for many years and was appalled by the treatment of the TN walking horse. At a show in a "Big Lick" class, a horse fell. My friends told me it was common and they just waited until the horse got up.

I can email my state legistators, but being from the North, we really need to show the Tennessee and Kentucky legistators that people from all over the country want action on this. And we need to prove to them that we are not trying to shut down TWHs just the Big Lick! The Big Lick is just one part of TWH shows and it's time for it to go. They always moan about the economic impact blah blah blah. But no one is saying the TWH shows should not go on, The Celebration has plenty of other classes to attract visitors. Is their argument that people are only going to see sad, sored horses? Well, then, tough. People loved going to pulic executions too but that doesn't mean that that was right.

I grew up in Middle Tennesse, was a member of the MT Pony Club, and often shared show rings with the Walking Horses. I was pretty young, but I always knew something was wrong: these horses were always wild-eyed and frightened. At the end of one particular class, they all lined up and I saw the blood running underneath the bell boots & down the hooves of one of these beautiful horses. THEN I figured out what all that ching-ching-ching was coming from their feet. That was more than 50 years ago, but I vowed then never to tolerate abuse of any horse,(or any animal) EVER. It's got to stop.

Please put a stop to this criminal practice! It is against the law. When are you going to enforce the law! I live in Tennessee and love our Tennessee Walking Horses. They are beautiful and gentle. They dont deserve to be tortured! They dont have their own voices but we the people that love and respect these gentle creatures are useing our voices to speak up for them. Please enforce the law that in place and stop this ASAP!!!

I find it horrific to think that gentle loving creatures have to be subjected to abuse that is illegal. I cannot contact my U.S. Congress man/woman as I am resident in Ireland are there any other suggestions?

Whenever I see a horse I remember my Morgan/Quarter gelding & how gentle he was with me & my daughters. We trusted and loved each other. I cannot imagine soring him or ANY horse; anyone who does is never to be confused with true horse-lovers or animal-lovers!
