A new donation-based program called Pet Food Stamps wants to ensure that furry members of low-income families receive the pet food they need. The new program is open to anyone in the United States, and already more than 45,000 pets are registered, Marc Okon, the program’s founder and executive director, told ABC News.

Approved applicants to the program receive pet food from the retailer Pet Food Direct for six months, Okon says.

The program does not receive federal funding. “Should the government be willing to provide assistance further down the line, we will look into it,” Okon told ABC News.

Approximately 46.6 million people used the federal food stamp program in 2012, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Do you think food stamps for pets are a good idea?

My katz get their food before I do. I receive a minimal amount of food stamps and spend my cash for pet food before spending more on food for myself. They are family just like my kids were, now my kids are adults with their own pets. I have one that is diabetic, 20 yrs old, one with kidney problems, 19 yrs old, a 13 yr old and the baby is 10 yrs old. I also put food out for 4 strays that come by every day hungry. If I can help I won't see any living being go hungry.

great idea and yes the state should fund it we fund everything else why not help support are furry friends

This is a wonderful idea! I would surely donate to this cause when I have the money. I don't have a disposable income but can help here and there.

What a wonderful way to help overcome one of the primary reasons that perfectly wonderful homes are unable to take in a homeless pet! What a great idea it would be for a non-profit organization to continue this type of a program and incorporate it with a service for the disabled, fixed income and senior citizens to provide pet care assistance...exercising animals, helping with transportation to the vet, cleaning up, bathing, etc. It would be a great way to create a mutually beneficial program for both people and pets!

When people reach a low point...at times their lowest point, the last thing they need is to lose their best friend because they couldn't feed he or she. Sometimes a furry friend is what helps people get through the hard times and remain strong. To be ready for better times when one can stand on one's feet again. This is one of the best ideas I have heard in a very, very long time.

yes a very good idea.how do I join?

Any pet foods sold in grocery stores are not healthy for animals so if the food stamps are for food purchased in grocery stores only then I would say NO! Do not support Pedigree Pal, Iams or Purina for sure! Beneful kills dogs. Do some research people! If you want your dog to be healthy and not get cancer you need to feed it either real food or homeopathic dog food. Bottom line!

I believe it is a wonderful idea.

Yes I do. Peoples situations change at times unexpectedly. The owner and their pets both suffer the consequences. This would be a GOD send for them.

I believe this to be the for our loving animals which will stand by our side no matter what.. And the will protect us to the very end... I am a animal lover

My family has 3 dogs 4 cats a bird and a ferret, we can barely afford any pet food. I think that this is a great idea.

Great Idea ! :)

A wonderful idea! I run a food pantry for those in need and I also collect dog and cat food and give it to our people who have pets. They are as grateful for the pet food as they are for their own groceries. No one ever thought of it before. We have been doing this for five years and it's a great success. However, our source of pet food has been dwindling and we are afraid we may not be able to continue much longer without new supplies. I'm all for this.

Yes, they are part of our families they deserve to be treated as well as we are.

Food stamps for pets is ok as long as it is privately funded, however when Uncle Sam becomes involved with my hard earned tax dollars its time to draw the line and say "HELL NO".

This is a wonderful program! Especially when it comes down to the decision of whether to provide for a pet or provide for a family. Although my two pets ARE my family, they are getting older and needing a more specialized nutrition which we can ill afford in the current economy. Wish my family could qualify for assistance!

I am low income and am trying to find out how to sign up for this program?
