Dognapping On the Rise—Protect Your Pet

Pet theft is on the rise. The American Kennel Club, which has been tracking pet thefts since 2007, reported a 32% increase in dog thefts last year.

While some animals are snatched from their yards or during home invasions, opportunistic thieves most commonly steal dogs left in cars or tied up outside stores. In the ASPCA’s hometown of New York City, dognappings skyrocket every summer as pet parents take advantage of nice weather to combine dog-walking with errand-running.

Protect Your Pet
Avoid becoming a victim of this heartbreaking crime!

  • When running errands around town, visit pet-friendly establishments or please leave your dog at home.
  • Keep a close eye on your pet in designated off-leash areas, where he could become a target for criminals looking to make a quick buck. (Pet thieves often try to resell—or even hold for ransom—stolen dogs.)
  • Avoid leaving your pet unattended in the front yard, especially if your lawn is exposed or accessible.
  • The same rules apply for leaving your pet tied up outside a store. In addition to being vulnerable to theft and teasing, your dog might escape or get injured.
  • Microchip your pet! Microchipping can often mean the difference between temporary and permanent separation from your furry loved one.

I called the police when i sae anpair of starving.dogs outside simple as that

I am wondering what people do with the dogs that they steal? Is it mainly purebreds so they can sell them - is there really a market for that? Or they are just too cute they want to keep them? I just always wonder this as I can't imagine what the purpose is of stealing a dog?

There are a number of reason's people steal dogs. Some just want the dog, most will sell it so they can get some money for drugs or whatever, others steal the dog and sell it to research labs, or to use as "bait" dogs to train fighting dogs. I would assume that a very few just take them to abuse them for their own pleasure. The bottom line here is to take care of your dogs and don't give anyone the chance to steal them. I know that all of these potential excuses are discusting and even scary, but it happens all the time and I have unfortunantly witnessed the cruelty that humans can inflict on defencely animals.

Hi Sally.thank you for your reply . Until I had more of a chance to read throug comments I had no idea using dogs for bait was so apparently common. People truly do disgust me sometimes . My mom always worries about her rescue pup being stolen because he is so dArn cute, but I could not imagine someone who loved dogs would steal one from a loving home.now I see the other possibilities and it's terrifying.i did hear a story from a friend about her mom being approached on the street with her small dog on a leash being basically set up for a dog napping. Fortunately both came out ok but before now I just couldn't believe people could be that aggressive in stealing a dog

My dogs don't like being alone, which is why I have two dogs. They keep each other company when I am out. They love each other so much and even go to the vet together when only one has an appointment otherwise they get stressed and worry that they will never see the other again. They are safer at home together than in my hot or exposed car. One is a rescue and I didn't pay a lot - just the cost for her shots and microchip, which I would have had to pay anyway as a responsible owner.

I leave my dog in the vehicle on hot days in a safe area for under 10 min, BUT I carry two keys to my vehicle, leave one in the ignition and lock the doors with the other. Sadie isn't to friendly to strangers so stealing her isn't really a concern to me. I am looking into putting a hotdog k9 car controller in. It alerts you when the interior gets to hot and will automatically engage a fan, roll down the windows, or even pop a door open, used mostly by law enforcement, who BTW all leave their dogs in the car

I think you should be arrested for animal cruelty. why don't you stay in the car for 10 min with out air conditioning when is hot outside. what you feel animals feel. the difference between animals and humans is that they can't talk, but get the same diseases that humans do and feel the same pain as humans.

Just a note to the woman who thinks it's judgemental of some of the posters to object to leaving dogs in cars - people don't understand that dogs to not have a way to dissipate heat in the same way humans do, and cars become very hot even if it's only 75 degrees outside and the windows are cracked. The SPCA says to never leave your pet in the car. Never. Cracked windows do not work. Please, protect your beloved pets, educate yourselves about this issue. They may miss you if you leave, but they'll suffer horribly in a car if left alone, and could die a terrible death.

I think people who leave their pet children in a car especially on hot summer days should be arrested. Good for the theives that take them when their inconsiderate guardians leave them in the car. I use to work at a grocery store and whenever we saw a dog or other animal or child left in a car we would call the sheriff. The owner would get a fine and the animals would get new homes. Most of these idiots would say they couldn't leave the animal at home because it would tear up the house or something. To that I say why do you have an animal then? So you can tie it up outside or leave it in the garage or in the car? To VLB, what if that was your human child that had cancer? Would you also let them pass away in your arms? I had a cat that had pancreatic cancer and also congestive heart failure. The vet said the chemo was not painful and that it might give him an extra 6 months to a year to live. He was only interested in quality of life for the patient not quantity of life for the owner. Baxter lived for 6 years because of the chemo. It only had to be done for four months and it wasn't painful for him. And no I am not rich but I did get an extra job to pay for the chemo. I also think it is wrong to pay for an animal when there are so many loving special "children" in shelters. But people still do it and that's what keeps the breeders in business. TO ALL OF YOU WHO SAY IT IS NOT A RESCUE WHEN YOU TAKE AN ANIMAL FROM A HOT CAR-WHAT IF IT WAS A HUMAN CHILD YOU WOULD HAVE THE POLICE THERE SO FAST IT WOULD MAKE YOUR HEAD SPIN. WHY IS IT DIFFERENT FOR AN ANIMAL?? THEY ARE GOD'S CREATURES TOO.

This information would be far more useful if the pet theft data was broken down by geographic area, such as by state, or metropolitan statistical area (even better).

I live in Germany (military spouse) where it is illegal to leave a pet in the car in any weather, and I don't see how it's legal in the States. Germany is very dog friendly - more so than kid friendly - so there is no reason to ever leave a dog inside the car. Dogs are allowed in restaurants (but not bakeries), stores, banks, etc. I really wish there were more dog friendly places in the U.S. It seems to very slowly be catching on. It's illegal to leave children unattended, and my furbabies are my children so I don't see the difference. In 70-degree weather the temperature in a car will reach 140 degrees within 15 minutes. Two fathers left their toddlers in the car in 70 degree weather to go hunting and their children died. No one realizes how hot it gets until it's too late. It's completely preventable, just don't do it. Also, for those of you who say you keep an eye on your car, that does not matter. A thief can bust a window and be in and out faster than you could run to catch him. I've seen it happen. Why risk it? Get a to-go order from the restaurant and have a picnic in the park with your pooch instead.

I adopted a 6 yr. old female Pomeranian from the Humane Society that was rescued from a puppy mill in Kansas. I had her for a little over a year. She was just getting used to human touch, learning that not all humans are bad. She was starting to adjust after a year of being in a home, and in the blink of an eye, she was gone. I let her out with another one of my dogs, I turned my back for 5 minutes to tend to another dog in the house and when I went out back for her, she was gone. I ran frantically through the neighborhood and couldn't find her anywhere. The other dog that she went out with returned, sadly Roxy did not. I put up flyers and classified ads with no results. I miss her everday and will always blame my self for not keeping a better eye on her.

I feel so terrible for you. Let us hope for a miracle for Roxy and you to be re-united. Thank you for helping several dogs -- you have a multi-dog household.

comes to this, if the dog is not in destress mind you own business!! if you want to make a change about ppl leaving animals in vehicles, then have the local law change that ppl can take their pet into the store with them.

My 'pup' is now 9 yesrs old. We had her microchipped at 4 months. We now have a different vet that we've seen for the last 5 years. I recently asked the vet to scan my dog to see if the chip still works, which it did - but they did not have her chip number on record - I found they never had scanned her but knew she was chipped because I answered "yes" on the initial application. I would think a Vet would scan all new patients to see if this is a stolen or lost pet prior to accepting as a patient!

I travel a lot with my pet dogs and cats during summer and fall. the best thing I've ever done is make sure whatever car I'm in has a remote start feature that allows the car to run with AC on. usually will run for 15 minutes. if I need more time then I go and restart car. not the most "green". but it keeps everyone safe in the locked car where it's nice and cool.

I am a victim of having my dog AND puppy both stolen. =( They both were purebreed rottweilers and were taken hopefull just for money and not over breeding or fighting since they were both females =( I hate to even think about it.

I have long carried the fear of home invasion by those seeking to steal my precious dogs. To hear that this type of theft is on such a rise scares me more than ever. I have a 12 yr old Boston Terrier and a 9 yr old Shih-Tzu, that people often mistake as a puppy because she is so small. Both dogs have age related issues, especially Mickey (BT) who suffered from Vestibular Disease, Horner's Syndrome, and pancreatitis within a 4 month period. Miraculosuly, after a few months you see no signs of his having been so ill, except some residual hearing and sight loss. However, he has such sensitivity to food that if he were given anything besides his carefully-monitored diet, he could contract diarrhea very quickly and die in the hands of strangers. He's been prone to HGE all his life (Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis). So all that said, I'm more worried hearing these increasing theft stats. :(

My dog loves going everywhere with our family. I was suprised reading these posts- yes, common sense says NEVER leave a dog in any bad situation (ie car during warm-hot weather) but if your dog is like mine- leave the A/C on- use the extra key to lock your doors- been doing this forever...car is fine & dog is happy!! Kind of simple solution. You wouldn't want to leave them in that situation for extended periods- but works fantastic for everyday errand running.

I will bet the ASPCA spreads this story around because they don't want people to leave their pets in the car for fear of some tragic outcome for the dog. We left our pet in our car once and a lady came up to us and tried to convince us our dog would be stolen. While I appreciate the good intentions of trying to protect pets, it is very irksome for others to assume they know what is best for you and your pet at all times and try to make you conform to their wishes. I love my dogs and would never do anything to harm them. I have paid over $12,000 on vet bills for one of my pets born with a patent ductus issue. To assume I would leave my pet in a too hot car and forget about him is annoying to say the least. I just can't believe someone would pay hundreds of dollars for an adult dog stolen when they could get one for nearly free from a shelter. Now, kidnapping could be another matter.

It should be said in BOLD TYPE that often these dogs are sold to dog-fighting rings to be bated and eventually bloodily killed. Would you leave your unlock?ed bike outside a store

I have two dogs. The only they're with me is when I take them out to do their business. At no time do I leave them unattended, nor do I run errands with them in tow, unless I have my sister with me, who would hold them and keep an eye on them. It is irresponsible to leave a dog unattended and never run errands with your dog in tow.

First off dogs in cars I had a friend have her car and dog stolen so its not always safe. However my rescue puppy hates to be left at home. She is my baby amd what parent says no to to a child who wants your attention. So i bring two sets of keys (ot seperate the keyless entry from the keys) leave the car running amd locked all year around. As fot adopted a dog fron a non profit shelter can be anywherr from 50-300. And if you dont have that ypu cannot aafford a dog. Im sorry to be blunt but its true. Vets are expensive. Getting quality car for you animala protects the dog the owner and all people and animals the adopted animal. And elderly dog requires meds to live well for the end of its years. And while you may think thats untrue ita the dog eho on fact suffers until it is put down and that dog the would have has a happier and longer life if the proper medication was administered. If you want a cuddly companion be able to afford it. Same with children. Dont let someone or someanimal suffer because it will make you happy.

Yes please, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PET UNATTENDED!!! see them as children and think for them. Would you leave your child in the car or outside the house by them selves? I HOPE NOT especially the way things are now in this world. see them as children and think for them.

I don't have my dogs microchipped and the reason is that it is not going to deter a theft. It's just not. The microchips can travel under the skin and there is a debate as to whether or not they cause cancer and/or other issues. I have taken dogs I've adopted to the vet and they have never asked if I stole them and they have never checked them for chips, so what is the sense in having them? The only time they make sense is for an escaped dog. But honestly, if the dog has tags with your name and phone number and someone wants to return them to you, they will use that information.

I hate to be the bearer of even worse news regarding stolen pets but the dogs are also taken not to re-sell or the ransom but as live dogs to be used as a dummy for training dogs to fight each other in a ring. I was given this information "right from the horses mouth" That image of torture is almost too much for me to think about, needless to say my guys are not even left in my yard without me watching them. My dogs are small maybe a big dog is not quite as vulnerable.

Our humane society here has some real problems, whether senior or otherwise. four infant kittens were dropped off and i volunteered to raise them. they needed to be bottle fed, etc. i know how to raise kittens. they refused to give them to me, wanted to charge $75 each, no discounts. i offered $75 for all, and instead they put them to sleep. this happens all the time. it makes it very hard to suggest to people they get a rescue. all of my animals are rescues, just not necessarily from the humane society.

When I started looking for a dog, I contacted several rescues. I wanted a sheltie or sheltie mix. I was turned down by the nearest sheltie rescue group because I did not have a large backyard. Another rescue had a cute sheltie mix available, but it was seven hours away and I could not get off work to go that weekend. So, I bought a sheltie from a woman with a nice litter. She owned the mother and the grandmother; they were lovely, intelligent dogs. The puppy I got was the last one of the litter; he was very shy. He is now four, and still very reserved, but we have earned obedience and Rally titles and he is famous around here for all of his tricks. He goes to work with me, we take long walks and do plenty of training. The sheltie rescue, however, did not think I would provide a good enough home. I realize that I could have gotten a dog from animal control, but in our area, all that is available is pit bulls, chihuahuas, and maybe a few others. (I am not exaggerating.) There is nothing wrong with these dogs, but it was not what I wanted. There are many different breeds for a reason. To say that NO ONE should breed is saying that all the different, specific breeds should become extinct. That would be a shame.

I agree Lucy! Eliminating all breeding results in the loss off unique breeds and ultimately, the loss of dogs as a whole. What really needs to be done is to eliminate all irresponsible breeders and to increase spay/neuter education/programs for the public. When I was looking for my Australian Shepherd a few years ago, I originally wanted a rescue, but the aussie rescue near me wouldn't let me foster or adopt because I had "never had an aussie before." I ended up meeting a wonderful breeder who let me meet all of their dogs and did a *fantastic* job with puppy socialization--whom I got a puppy from. I was in the same boat as you--the rescue thought I wouldn't be a good home, yet I am. My aussie has titles in several dog sports, goes to work with me everyday, gets plenty of exercise and training.

I am appalled to hear some people's comments about leaving your dog(s) in cars. I would NEVER leave my dogs in the car on a hot day, but I see no problem with it if the outside temperature is sufficiently cool (less than 50 degrees) and if it were only for about 10-15 minutes. I live in New England for heaven's sake! My dogs are not going to die of heat stroke in the winter here! That said, my car is also dog proofed (seat covers, nothing lying around except for dog toys). I also have an alarm on my car to deter any potential thieves. My dogs love riding in the car, and if it is not going to hurt them, then why not?

My first dog,Chaka, was a Shepherd mix. She loved to go in the car with me. She was very protective of me and she could take care of herself. No one in their right mind would go near my car when she was in the car. I always left her with the a/c on in the summer and she was very comfortable. I once fell asleep in the car with the front window open in the Spring. She was chasing a bug on the back ledge. Someone came near the car window (to ask me for some change). She jumped over the seat, put her front paws on the window ledge and was growling so ferociously that this person jumped back. I always had plenty of water and fed her hamburger at McDonald's on the road. She loved taking trips with me. I never worried about her being in the car alone (and never left her in a hot car.)

Your precautions are similar to the ones I used to take with my Shepherd Mix. But when I learned that a standing car in 75 degrees even in the shade and with a/c could get into the 90s in less than 10 minutes, I decided that he would only go on trips with me when I was going to be with him at all times. They only sweat through their paws and through panting, so we have to be extra careful when it's super hot. (Or, in some places, super cold.)

Isn't it all just about common sense, and good stewardship? Just use common sense.

My dog is a German Sheppard mix and during one of our many walks a stranger approached and his tail rose, teeth were shown and was ready to attack but around kids & seniors & neighbors he's the sweetest dog ever and enjoys chatting with other dogs in my building. I'am planning to adopt a small dog soon and I would never want anything to happen to a member of my family.

The public needs to understand that dog nappers are selling them to buyers for apx 20.00. The are then sold to underground organizations that sell them to labs for medical research. They are also sold to demons who fight Pit Bulls. They are used as "bait dogs". In a nutshell they are used to teach a Pit Bull to kill. Pit Bulls are not normally "killers" they have been taught to kill. All Pit Bulls now have a bad rap. Unless you can keep your dog with you constantly never, never leave them in a car or tied up anywhere.

If you aren't already doing these things, then you are not a very good pet owner in the first place! You should never leave your dog anywhere except home unless you are with them. It's like leaving your dog in the car and wondering why they suffocated. Get smart!

I can understand everyone's point of view in regard to leaving your pet in the car while you run errands. I would feel like my world came crashing down if my dog ever got stolen but on the other hand, my dog is in the car before anyone else when he hears those keys jingle. He already gets his daily "stay" we we go off to work. I feel great when I can actually have him come for the ride. It is a double egded sword for sure.

Separate and apart from the issue of leaving our four-legged friends in the car, it's worth noting WHY pet-napping is increasing. Part of the reason is the that more states are cracking down on puppy mills (YAY), with the side-effect that lab-dog traders which used to deal with puppy mills have increased their desire to steal pets to sell to labs. Do not even offer your pet "free to good home" in the classifieds. ALWAYS ASK FOR MONEY, even if it's just 10 bucks. It tends to discourage the lab dog traders.

We don't have a lot of dog fighting where I live, but reading about it here makes it seem just that more critical that our babies are not stolen as "bait." Sadly there are always strays that can be used, so we have to do all we can stop this dog fighting FOREVER.

MY COUSIN IS A CHICAGO POLICE OFFICER AND AN AVID PET LOVER AND OWNER....5 DOGS.....AND HE SAYS ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS FOR PET THEFT IS THAT DOGS ARE OFTEN USED AS BAIT TO TRAIN PITBULLS TO FIGHT AND KILL. IT MAKES ME SICK. NEVER LEAVE A DOG IN A CAR FOR ANY REASON. JUST THINK OF THIS IF YOU DO.

Many years ago, I was given my first dog. We so inseparable that I took her with me wherever I went. I had no idea of how cruel this world is to animals and was completely ignorant of what often happens to them. It was only in l970 when I first became involved in animal welfare and dedicated my life to help animals that I learned very quickly. Once I knew of the dangers, I realized it was better to leave them home safe than to subject them to tortures in a research lab or used in dog fighting, etc. My dog's welfare and health was more important than the temporary companionship.

I know the feeling , someone let my 3 dogs out of the fenced in yard , the 2 big dogs came home but my little pug was missing , after 4 days of riding around and calling places and posting a reward , three guys are in my drive way when my husband comes home for lunch ( I was out of town) THEY HAD MY DOG AND WANTED MORE MONEY than my husband had offered , said she should be worth more , they had a rope around her neck and she had rope burns from them pulling on her, needless to say after my husband said he would call the cops if they did not give her back and take what he did offer. she was starved and acted like they had not given her water, she hid in the house for several days , who knows what they did to her , when I got home I took her to the vet. to check her out and see about the place on her stomach, well now we find out she has stage 2 cancer, she is 10 yrs old, he said maybe 6 months maybe 2 yrs , we just have to wait and see. how anyone can be mean and cruel to a dog or any animal I do not know. I now have locks on the gate , hopefully they will be safe

I am so glad you got the little pug back. You seem to have a gang in the area. I would be worried, too and never leave the dogs outside without someone being home. You'd almost need a smaller enclosed double-fence with an alarm. The question is why is that sort of extortion and kidnapping not taken seriously by the authorities? The criminals' behavior are the same regardless of the victim, and you and your husband were heartbroken. Not to mention abusing and traumatizing your elderly sick pug. Incidentally, pugs are so cute and funny and temperature-sensitive.

I leave my dogs in the car when the temperature is 70 and below for going to pasy for gas & running into convenient store for drinks-that's it and I feel sorry for anyone stupid enough to try to put their hand inside the window without my permission!!

I keep one in my car and if I absolutely have to stop they go in there, zipped up, go with me and it's all good. Many people think it's a baby! well I guess they are fur babies.
