Dognapping On the Rise—Protect Your Pet

Pet theft is on the rise. The American Kennel Club, which has been tracking pet thefts since 2007, reported a 32% increase in dog thefts last year.

While some animals are snatched from their yards or during home invasions, opportunistic thieves most commonly steal dogs left in cars or tied up outside stores. In the ASPCA’s hometown of New York City, dognappings skyrocket every summer as pet parents take advantage of nice weather to combine dog-walking with errand-running.

Protect Your Pet
Avoid becoming a victim of this heartbreaking crime!

  • When running errands around town, visit pet-friendly establishments or please leave your dog at home.
  • Keep a close eye on your pet in designated off-leash areas, where he could become a target for criminals looking to make a quick buck. (Pet thieves often try to resell—or even hold for ransom—stolen dogs.)
  • Avoid leaving your pet unattended in the front yard, especially if your lawn is exposed or accessible.
  • The same rules apply for leaving your pet tied up outside a store. In addition to being vulnerable to theft and teasing, your dog might escape or get injured.
  • Microchip your pet! Microchipping can often mean the difference between temporary and permanent separation from your furry loved one.

Wow! Take it easy. You make a good point about dognapping, but why did you have to insult that person before making your point...the only relevant point you made regarding the article. Like I said you did make a good point but you did not have to insult that person first. It only makes you look bad. Besides that person spelling wasn't even that bad. I've seen worse and it almost always bothers me but never enough to be rude or insulting to that person.

It infuriates me to see dogs in cars on a warm day with a window cracked. CRACKED. How dumb are people to think "cracking" a window gives adequate air flow even on a cooler day and even for 5 min? I mean, it's common sense...dogs have a FUR coat for god sakes. My dog LOVES to ride with me, but I have my all my windows down and leave water with her (but now I have to consider pet theft when doing this). However, I use my common sense when leaving her there...if it's too hot, she doesn't go. Period. It amazes me how often and how idiotic most people are with their dogs.

You are lucky you live in a place that cares. In North Carolina neither animal control nor police will come out to a call of animals left in a hot car. Not only that, they informed me if I broke in to save the dog, I would go to jail. I can't wait to move out of this state!

Thats strange. I live in NC and have called both police & AC when I see that. They always come. Off duty Friemen are good too. The last time I found an off duty police officer the door was unlocked so he open the door & got the toy poddle out while i had water ready. When the owner came out the threatened to have her arrested for Animal Cruelty. He took her lisene plate number & said he would make sure his precinct had it. Another time there were 4 horses in an enclosed trailer. The owners I guess went in to get groceries. The horses were not happy and sweating profusly. An on duyt sherrif pulled up to go get lunch & I flagged her down. She undid the outside latches. If I had done it I could have been arrested for breaking & entering. So she did. She said she would wait for the owners to come out. I know she did because I saw her later in the week.

To all those who said they would only be a few minutes- I feel sorry for their animals. IT'S NEVER A FEW MINUTES! The heat buildup is fast and even with wide open windows - the car is a metal oven. I beg you!. Never leave your pet(s) in the car. Don't take them in the car when you are going to run errands- no matter how hard they beg. When you get home- then take them for a ride for a half hour. Don't combine the two things. Screw the extra cost of the gas- you love your pet. Hde/She is worth it!!! gET it???!!! Pets are totally dependent on your good judgement for their surival once they come under your care. They are our children as much as any child we have. Don't abuse your responsibility, Thank you

ChaplinsSmile....It is unfortunate that you have had such a bad experience in North Carolina. I am aware of a recent incident in Winston-Salem where the police opened a running vehicle with a dog inside because they were unable to determine if the air conditioning was running. After opening the vehicle, they found that the air conditioning was running and that it was approximately 70 degrees inside the car.

Don't worry, about that word "ur going to jail if u break a window of someone else's car" just remember this phrase --- GOOD SAMARITAN LAW --IS ALSO APPLIED TO ANIMALS NOT JUST HUMANS---JUST MAKE SURE TO FIND EITHER A SECURITY / GUARD IN THE AREA OR A RELIABLE WITNESS FOR UR SIDE...5 mind makes a lot of difference ---so forget the issue of d window n save d animal inside... First thing to do is hydration ( water)

I TOO LIVE IN NC AND YOU'RE RIGHT. THE COPS HERE DONT RESPOND TO CALLS REGARDING ANIMAL CONTROL. MY BROTHER WORKED IN ANIMAL CONTROL FOR MANY YEARS AND HE ALSO STATED TO ME THAT THEY DONT REPLY TO ANYTHING UNLESS IT IS A DOG BITE OR SOMETHING ALONG THAT CALIBER. I TOO CANT WAIT TO MOVE TO SOMEPLACE THAT ACTUALLY WATCHES OUT FOR ANIMALS.. WHEN I LIVED TO MASSACHUSETTES THEY MONITOR ANIMAL PROBLEMS AND IF A PERSON WAS TO LEAVE ANY ANIMAL IN A CAR WITHOUT THE PROPER SUPERVISION THEY COULD AND ACTUALLY WOULD PROSECUTE A PERSON IF SOMETHING HAPPENED TO THE POOR LITTLE CREATURE OR LARGE MUTT.. I LOVE DOGS AND MY SAYING IS THAT DOGS ARE THE BEST PEOPLE ON EARTH. I WOULD NEVER LEAVE MY DOG IN A CAR EVEN FOR A COUPLE MINUTES BECAUSE THERE ARE THOSE UNSCRUPULOUS BEINGS THAT ARE WAITING IN THE CORNER WAITING FOR SOME PERSON TO LEAVE THEIR DOG UNATTENDED ONLY FOR A COUPLE MINUTES AND FOLKS THAT ALL IT TAKES.. ONLY A FEW SECONDS TO LOSE A DEAR LOVED ONE SUCH AS YOUR BELOVED PET. I LOVE MY DOGS AND I TAKE THEM WITH ME SOMETIMES BUT BELEIVE ME WHEN I GET OUT OF MY TRUCK, THEY COME WITH ME.I DONT DARE LEAVE MY DOG UNATTENDED BY HERSELF. THEY ARE HELPLESS AND NEED TO BE LOOKED AFTER. IF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A CUTE LITTLE CHIHUAHUA FOR EXAMPLE YOU DONT REALIZE THE RESPONSIBILIITY IT TAKES TO TAKE CARE OF THEM AND THEIR NEEDS 100% OF THE TIME. DOGS ARE LIKE CHILDREN. THEY NEED PROTECTION AND CARE DAY IN AND DAY OUT.. I PERSONALLY COULD NOT LIVE WITHOUT MY ZOE.. I LOVE HER DEARLY.. PEOPLE WAKE UP. WATCH AND CARE FOR YOUR DOGS . THEY ARE GIVEN TO US FROM GOD TO BE A COMFORT TO US AND TO BE OUR FRIENDS. THEY DONT LIVE LONG ENOUGH AS IT IS. I SEE LOST DOG POSTERS ALL OF THE TIME FOR DOGS THAT HAVE DISAPPEARED NEAR WHERE I LIVE AT AND I THINK IT IS SO SAD BECAUSE WHAT THE DOGS THAT ARE LOST OR STOLEN MUST BE FEELING NOT TO MENTION THE OWNERS.. WE MUST PROTECT OUR LITTLE CREATURES OR BIG.. END OF DISCUSSION.. AND I KNOW I WILL PROBABLY GET SOME NEGATIVE FEEDBACK FROM SOME NUT THAT WANTS TO MAJOR ON MY VERBAGE OR ENUNCIATION OF MY WORDS.. SO BE IT..

I take my dog on errands when I will be inside for only a minute or two. But I also use my automatic start to leave the air on (keys are with me and car is locked). The inside of my car is usually colder than the store I'm visiting. The same goes for heat although I make sure it's not too hot. She's a cold weather fan. But in this instance, I would have done the same as you.

Krissa- I agree with your doing that. I have done that too. One day last summer here in Florida I, my 2 kids and 2 Goldens made a stop at the video store. Even at 5pm, the summer FL sun and heat was still oppressive. So, of course, I left the car running with A/C on and doors locked-... just in case. Anyway, we parked next to a minivan. In it was a small Chihauha in direct sunlight; windows only down 2 inches! Poor dog was on hind legs with front paws on steering wheel panting like crazy. I noticed the dog right away as I got out of my car. I was alarmed and sad. I asked everyone in the video store who owned the minivan, expressing concern for the annimal's distress and no one admitted to it. I informed an employee of my concern. He shrugged his shoulders and walked off. Then, this guy behind me in the checkout line says angrily, "I own the minivan and the dog is just fine. It's not too hot for him and he's only been in there for a FEW minutes. I informed him of his neglect and abuse and that he could be charged and fined for animal cruelty with just a simple phone call to the SPCA ...(my phone in hand),# in presets/contacts...ready to dial. He became defensive immediately with me...a near arguement started. I paid for my movie rental and walked out, glaring at him over my shoulder. I waited in my car to make sure the dog was not left in that overheated minivan any longer. Common sense seems is not common enough these days. Jeez. My actions were of concern, not of accusation or harassment, judgement. Some people just don't get it! Clueless

God bless you for acting and saving this dog. Stupid people!

I agree in that leaving your pet(s) in the car can be fatal for the animal. I think of this scenario: A well intended pet owner runs into whatever store, intending to leave their pet in the car unattended for only a few minutes; being mindful of the time frame and with windows generously opened. Suppose the checkout line is slow or a mile long with only one cashier? Suppose the store is held up in a robbery? That few minutes now can easily become 30+ min. Suppose the loving pet owner suffers a heart attack, stroke etc? That owner may not have the ability, opportunity or mindset to alert anyone to assist their pet trapped in that rapidly, increasingly hot car. Freaky, unexpected things CAN happen beyond our control and what a tragic end it could be to Fido's beloved ride in the car! I have 2 Goldens myself and they love to be with me always. I get the sad eyes too when I leave them home. I tend to air on the side of caution and anticipate/prevent certain situations. I may be over the top with my 'what if' forecast, however, living in Florida, I feel it best for their safety to leave them home in the A/C.

The same thing happened to me at a grocery store. I saw a Rottie in a car, parked in the shade on a warm, not hot, day. The owners did not respond to the loudspeaker announcement. The police arrived just in time. These people also said they only ran into the store for five minutes. When are people going to get it??? Unfortunately, most have to learn the hard way at the expense of their pets.

How judgmental. If it's not a hot day and the windows are generously cracked open, my dog would much rather be with me, even if he had to wait a few minutes while I run into a store, than "cozy and comfortable" at home... there is no such thing for my dog, he misses me terribly when I'm not there and hates to be left home. I leave him home on warm days out of necessity because I don't want to risk him, and he is always miserable to be left alone.

Dying in a car is hardly judgemental...it is a nightmare. Try sitting in a HOT car for 5 minutes for the experience...and you can't reach for the water bottle. ....Heat is not the only issue, dog theft is on the rise. How would you feel if you NEVER knew what became of your pet?? CA Animal Welfare Association.

Some people are so pious and self righteous. Yes, it's dangerous to leave a dog in a hot car for even five minutes. However, some of these people are talking about on a cool day. I've never had to leave my dog unattended in the car, and never would if the temperature was above 65, but you don't know what weather these people left their dogs in. I've had to sit in a car that's not running for half an hour at a time waiting for someone. I might not have a fur coat, but in some regions, it can be pretty comfortable, even in a car. It's just that this mouth-foaming screaming witch hunt is making it harder and harder for some people to take intelligent, common-sense pet advice seriously. I'm tired of telling people they need to stop doing this or that with their pets and having them think I'm one of /those/ people. When you have people calling others "monstrous" (no one here) for using a water spray bottle on their cat, it drowns out the rest of the should-be common sense from pet lovers. Calm down, people.

I totally agree with Alma. Most people need to experience just how hot the inside of a car can get. Try cracking a few windows and sit inside your car; then the message will come through loud and clear. My other concern is during these hot summer months people take their dogs with them to exercise during the warmest times of the day. While they're wearing as little as possible, with a water bottle at their side, their poor dogs have no water and are wearing a fur coat.

I agree w/ CA Animal Welfare Association. Even if your beloved pet doesn't die from the experience, they can be left quite ill, often permanently. I love my "girls" DEARLY and they seem to know which visits they can go along on and which ones I "can't" take them on by ?? (what I wear? who knows?) Anyway, I run my errands ALONE because you never know what delays may befall you (and if someone ever stole my "girls" or they died/fell ill because of something that *I* did to them, I'd be devastated! Of COURSE they are always happier when they are with you, as you are leader of the pack! And I'm always happier when I'm with the "girls" and plan on staying that way by saving their car rides to play dates! :-D

My Doberman hated for me to go, he was suffering from anxiety attack and was destructive when I lived him at Home, finally I did buy a large crate and put him inside when I was not at Home, he was doing fine and sleeping in his crate,. I adopted an rescue dog, that I found almost dead on the street, bringing her to the dogs rescue Hunain Society hospital, they took care of her for a whole month, she was almost dead when I bring her to them, with all the diseases that you can imagin, bleeding and exausted. I was feeling so bad about this poor baby, that almost everyday I went to visit her at the Human Society Hospital, after she was completly back to health, WITH THE HELP AND CARE of this wonderful organization the Human Society, Doctors and helps, I got so attached to her and adopted her, as I never want her to maybe get back to the horrible life she had before. That was 2 years ago, my Doberman is very happy now, they really love each other, it did take time and lots of patience and love at first, as this poor Lisette(her name) had been so so hurt by some horrible people, but now I leave Home they are togheter happy and protected, what a great feeling., I thank GOD everyday, for putting my Lisette on my way that day. So many animals deserve to be taken care and loved, search a wonderful reward for me. I really admire all these Animal Organisations, to be so dedicated to their wonderful Human Job, saving all these wonderful creatures. THANK YOU to this GREAT AND WONDERFUL ORGANIZATION THE HUMAIN SOCIETY., they work so so hard for all these poor Animals.

Our pets depend on us to do what is right for them. If leaving a pet home (even though they are miserable, but I'm not sure how they convey that to you) means they will be safer, than it is up to us do do it. I have called the police about a car with a window cracked, on a very hot day, with a dog in it. The police told me there was nothing they could do! I went into the restaurant and had the owner paged. She left in a real hurry and I told her I had called the police.

That is what Kong toys are meant for. They keep your dogs brain stimulated as well as keep them occupied while you are out.

My dog was comfortable in (her) truck. I would leave the back window open and many times when I went outside. I would find her in the truck. That was security for her.

Don't forget that in CA there is a fine for leaving your dog in the car. The cops will break your window, remove your dog, and fine you. Just leave Poochy at home.

While in general, I don't think dogs should be left in cars, there are many dogs with separation anxiety that are completely distraught if left home alone, no matter how "cozy" it is there, but are perfectly happy to wait in the car for their owners. I am in no way saying that it is necessarily the safest thing to leave a dog in a car, but sometimes there is good reason behind it (if weather permits). That said, it breaks my heart when people have dogs that are panicked and barking hysterically at everything that goes past while they are left in the car. There is absolutely NO reason to bring that type of dog in a car "for fun."

Depends on how the dog feels about being in the car.....my dogs prefer to go to work with me.....they have water, partially opened windows and i can visit with them on my breaks (while my co-workers smoke a cigarette, i take "puppy piddle" breaks). with a new pup, this has greatly lessened the "separation anxiety" over the option of leaving her home alone for 9 hours. of course when the weather is warm, they stay home because the car gets hot even with the windows rolled partway down.....but where i live, the sun does not shine a whole lot....

Totally disagree. As soon as it's cold I take my dog everywhee. It's like a secondary crate. She curls up on by seat and waits until I return or she'll people watch. If I leave her at home she gets anxious because she doesn't know where I went. You have to know your dog well enough to make these decisions.

People have had their cars stolen with dogs inside never to see their dog again or know what happened to them. Its a huge risk and putting your dog in danger leaving him an the car alone plus he could get teased or anything. Its not about knowing your dog its about not putting him in a position where he could come to harm. I dont suppose youd leave a vulnerable helpless baby alone in a car so why would you onsider leaving a vulnerable helpless dog? Dont put him at risk please..

My Aussie has a fit if I go in the car without her. For the last 15 years she has gone with me everywhere. Even in the summer I have taken her with me and left her locked in the car with the air conditioning running. I don't take her if I'm going to be in the store for more than 5 or 10 minutes though, or anywhere other than my local area. Even when she travels with me, I am nervous when I have to leave her in the hotel room.

I know it's not completely safe to do this, but at times I find myself having to leave my pom in the car alone for a minute or two while I run in a gas station. I know its not good, but, If I run out of gas then he's stuck in the heat (that's worse). I can't leave him home alone because he hyperventilates (or reverse sneezes) a lot and needs to be watched. I drop him off at my mothers before I go to stores that I know I'll be in for a while, but he does spend a couple minutes in the car alone. It's not the best thing to do, but sometimes you just can't help it. I wish I could.

I agree, I used to years ago. Not only because of pet theft but because of heat exposure. Now, when I see animals in the car I leave a flyer on the car window and if hot out will stay in the parking lot until I see the owners return. If they don't return in 15 minutes, I call 911.

Fran, you rock. Not enough people out there are like that. I keep multiple copies of the flyer in my car for just the same reason. So does my mom. I can say thankfully I have not had to use any yet and hope I never have to. Thanks for helping out the animals.

Fran, Thank you for leaving a flyer, waiting until the owners return and then calling 911 if they don't show up. Thank you for doing all these. Not enough people care for the dogs/pets left in the car. They think you are butting in their business but you are just looking out for the dog when their owners can't. I read it is not good to leave them in the car when it is 70-degrees F and warmer. More power to you and keep up the good job. :-)

Excellent advice regarding flyers and monitoring until owners return - I will also use these techniques whenever I come across similiar situations. I love the idea of not feeling helpless and knowing that a pet(s) will not suffer.

I live in Paradise Valley, Az. and we never, ever leave our pets in the car. We have winter visitors who think since it's not summer it's OK to leave pets in the car. WRONG! Even if it's not 100+ a car becomes an oven in a very short time. Our average temperatures in the winter can go into the 80's and we're always seeing dogs left in a car. I make it a point to leave a note (if it's not too hot). I haven't had to call the police yet, but if it's ever above 70 and there's a dog in a car, I will definetely call the authorities.

I totally agree that animals should not be left in cars and also outside shops. Its not safe they could get taken. And even if they dont other things happen. I stood and watched a dog tied up outside a shop once and saw him being teased by youngsters, a woman trod on his paw and he got accidentally knocked in his face with a shopping bag. It was surprising just how much happened to him whilst he was left there. Obviously we are unaware what happens when we leave them alone so I waited and told her about it. Hopefully she wont do it again. I stopped them from teasing him by the way.

I agree!!!

I totally agree with the person who said NEVER, EVER leave your dogs in the car, regardless the weather. I have to call Animal Control here in Lincoln, Ne. at least once or twice every summer on owners who insist on leaving their poor pets in the car while they just run into the store for "5" minutes ( I've stood waiting 15 minutes for them to return, or for Animal Contraol to arrive first). Leave your pets at home where they are MOST COMFORTABLE..............:)

I witnessed a dog in a car with all the windows up at a store. I went inside to find the owner. She had a cartful and said it was hers and she was fine. She said she was in there a short time...It was hot with the windows open the dog was not panting that is not a good sign. It was an elderly lady who told me she didnt need me to tell her how to treat her dog and I told her I felt sorry for her dog. I didnot know what to do besides try to educate her and flopped. People want to take them everywhere and it makes me crazy. They are happier at home and safer by far.

I live in Florida and dogs die in cars! You should not be worried about someone stealing the dogs, you should worry about coming back from shopping to find them dead from heat stroke .

I was advised and informed by a neighbor affiliated with Golden Retriever Rescue of mid Florida to NOT leave my dogs,(Golden Retrievers) unattended in the yard or car ever for this reason terribly shocking! : dog fighting owners look for 'Bait Dogs' to use and sacrifice for training/fighting purposes!! The mild temperment of the Retriever I was told makes an ideal candidate! I instantly felt very ill, nearly throwing up right there in hearing of this horrific possibility. Further, young dogs and pups are a target also...in fact I would assume all/any could be. I keep my Abby and Rosie close to me, safely guarded. What an awful thing! This world has gone mad with so much evil out there, it truly disgusts me!

You were going to leave your dog in the car with the "moon roof slightly open for airflow"? Was your intent to have your dog suffocate?

I take my dogs in some store that allow it like Walmart I ask first and they said I could. I put them in the cart and they sleep sometimes.

I agree with the article leaving your animals in the car is never a good idea. I see to many people leave animals in the car in the heat and unattended where someone could steal them. If you love your animal microchip and keep them close.

What really motivated you to publish “Add new comment | ASPCA Blog”? I actuallyhonestly adored the post! Thanks for the post ,Muhammad

Thank you for the great information. Love my Baby to death and would never want her to be dog napped.

Taking a dog left tied up outside a car is not dog-napping. It's a rescue.

I agree....that is rescue.

Taking a dog from a parked car, on one that is tied up outside a house is a NOT a rescue. It's theft plain and simple. Calling the police or local authorities and reporting abuse is justified, but you have no right to be judge and jury in the matter of pets or any other cause. If you are caught or found with the dog you can, and should go to jail as a thief. No one has the right to take the law into their own hands, and you shouldn't justify or advise others to do so. Action like this tarnishes the reputation of rescuers and errodes public trust.
