ASPCA Opens Emergency Boarding Facility for Sandy Victims

Saturday, November 17, 2012 - 11:45am

Many who lost their homes to Sandy have told us that they don’t want to give up their pets, but that they have nowhere to keep them. In response, today the ASPCA is opening a 20,000 square-foot emergency boarding facility for hundreds of animals displaced by Superstorm Sandy.

Located in central Brooklyn, this emergency boarding service is offered to those who need a place to house their animals until they can get back on their feet. It will also provide shelter for pets of those in evacuation centers, as well as pets whose families are already boarding them at Sean Casey Animal Rescue in Brooklyn.

This effort is greatly aided by a $500,000 grant from generous animal lover Rachael Ray, as well as the donations of our compassionate supporters.

The ASPCA is operating this facility in collaboration with Animal Care & Control of NYC, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services National Veterinary Response Team, and the NYC Veterinary Emergency Response Team.

“We will continue our disaster relief work to help animal victims in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, and hope that the emergency boarding facility will allow pet parents to focus on rebuilding their lives,” says ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Senior Director Tim Rickey. “It will take time, but we will work as a community, and the ASPCA will continue to provide ongoing assistance, personnel and resources as long as we’re needed.”

111612_blog_boarding.jpgIf you or someone you know was affected by Sandy and needs to temporarily house an animal at our facility, please see the details below.

Where: Pet parents in need can bring their animals directly to the emergency boarding facility, located at 1508 Herkimer Street, Brooklyn, NY, 11233, as early as today. Map

When: Starting today, the facility will be open seven days a week from 9:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M., and will remain open for 30 days.

Standard of care: Veterinarians and specially trained staff will care for these pets and keep them healthy and happy, and pet parents will be welcome to visit.

What to bring: Pet parents are encouraged to bring the following, along with their pets, to the emergency boarding facility: one government-issued photo ID (i.e., driver’s license, passport, military ID, or non-driver ID) and a proof of address (i.e. utility bill, driver’s license). If possible, we encourage people to put ID tags on their pets and bring a carrier or crate, vaccination records, and medications or supplies for pets with special needs.

Please help us spread the word on Facebook and Twitter.

THIS great work is why I am a proud monthly supporter of the ASPCA! Great work guys and many thanks to Rachael Ray.

I would love to volunteer at the emergency shelter to help socialize the animals. How would I go about doing so? Thank you.

I am very interested in volunteering my services in any way needed. I have over 20 years experience in grooming dogs and seven years of experience in training. If I am needed in any way please let me know.

I have some free time where I would like to help volunteer. Please contact me. I may even be able to house a pet.

Are any of the animals that had to be brought to this facility from their owner, due to sandy, up for foster, until their owners get back on their feet?

i would also be interested in helping be a foster parent temporarily for a dog. ASPCA, can you put up info somewhere on your site regarding this?

Hello, I am proud to be a monthly supporter and very grateful to Rachel Ray's grant. I wanted to make the ASPCA aware that NJ is also in need. Specifically, there is a cat colony that lives under the boardwalk at Seaside Heights. Wonderful people (see attached link)feed and care for these kitties. Unbelievably many survived the storm. I reached out to Ruth (see link) and she told me the boardwalk is destroyed and will be bulldozed. The cats need temporary shelter until a new boardwalk is built. Here is the link to the site for the nonprofit taking care of the cats. http://www.seaside-heightsnj.org/departments/seaside-heights-animal-welfare-group/ I hope they can get some help. Thank you and kind regards.

Hi. I live in Park Slope and would love to help out. Please let me know if you need help. I am happy to clean cages, walk dogs, change litter. Whatever you need.

I WOULD LIKE TO VOLUNTEER AT THE NEW EMERGENCY SHELTER. PLEASE LET ME KNOW IF VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED.

We would like to volunteer as a foster home for a dog in need.

I have two Cavaliers and 4 cats. Live in Manhattan.

There is a pic of a white puppy w a brown patch over his eye is he available for adoption or is he being held until his family can take him

Is the ASPCA still searching for pets lost or displaced by the storm, or are other rescue groups? I heard there are many dogs and cats roaming around hungry in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn and in Mastic Beach, LI... I am interested in fostering a cat also.

Hi, my wife and I feel for those who lost their home and cannot be with their pets in this difficult time. We would like to open our house in Brooklyn for a dog that needs care and affection and daily walks. We'll return your pet as soon as you can take care of it again. Please send me an email if you're interested. Thanks.

I have a 3 yr old black lab mix. We only got out with each other. We are staying with friends in harlem. He is fully house broken and VERY well trained. Good with kids and animals. He only needs a place for a few weeks until I can find us a new home.

I would be happy to take your dog until you can find a place. I live in Port Jefferson Station, NY.

Hi, we'll be happy to host your dog. We live in a brown stone house in Bed-Stuy, I'm a freelance artist and my wife works only p/t, so your dog would have company most of the time. We don't have pets or children. If you want to get in touch with us, my cellphone number is #201.238.7798. Thanks, Jamie Holder

Is there an address for donations to ASPCA that will be used specifically for pets from Sandy? and not go to the general society funds.

I would love to extend my home to any animal in need. Please let me know if there's anything I can do.

I can foster a cat and dog. I already have 1 cat so the ones needing foster care need to be okay with the cat I already own My cat is accustomed to living with a dog and another cat

Hello, I am writing on behalf of the owners of a male pitbull dog who is currently in the emergency shelter. The owners are now staying in a FEMA funded hostel and do not have a computer. Priro to Sandy, this dog was living in a home with a female dog (also pitbull) and a cat. I was one of the volunteers who worked in one of the hurricane evacuation cernters where this family had stayed for a little short of 3 weeks before being assigned to the FEMA hostel. Therefore I worked with all three animals, and am indeed currently fostering the female pitbull with whom the male dog was living. I can say that this male dog is very well trained, house broken, but very strong. He is not aggresive towards other dogs or cats or human, but is very playful when outside and thus requires someone (possibly a male) who would be able to hold onto him. If you think you can foster this dog, please let me know as soon as possible. I would really want this dog to be in good hands, as he is such a sweetheart. Thanks for so kindly considering fostering a dog in need.

We will foster a dog in need. We have a house in bayside. 2 loving adults with experience with pets.

Please let me know how and when I can volunteer at the shelter. Thank you.

Please let me know if you need help at emergency shelter.

Ty so much for this service! My pup has no where to go we just lost our whole apt. On our way to find out more info. Hope they take care of our english bully!

I would be happy to foster any animal that needs a place while you are looking for a place to live.

Our community, Jamestown, RI, has many animal lovers who would like to help with donations of items or cash intended for animal victims of Sandy and their families. Let us know what you need the most.

We have a 7 yr old lab and live in CT on the water would be happy to take in a dog until owner able to take home Please email me.

I am interested in fostering a small senior dog while his/her parents get back on their feet. Weewee pad trained is fine. I have a small dog now & 2 cats. I only ask that the dog not be a constant barker as I live in a building. I come with references & years experience! I have fostered in the past and understand the pet gets to return home when ita time. :)

I want to foster a dog. If there is a family who wants to place their small dog in my jersey shore home rather until they het back on their feet, please give them my email address!! Thank you

i am a supporter for the aspca and am looking to help out where im needed. live in central jersey and willing to travel to shore

When I saw the photo of the Saint Bernard, my heart broke. I had a St. Bernard for 10 years and had to put her down last year. I have a large home and will be willing to help out the Saint Bernard in the picture. Please let me know what I could do. I live in South Western Connecticut. Linda

I would like to volunteer to foster care for an animal. I have a loving home, lots of time, & other pets to play with!

I just read in an article that you are already looking at closing this shelter, and that any remaining animals may be euthanized. As a supporter of ASPCA, I'm really dissapointed that you are not giving the owners more time to recover and claim pets. I would also like to know what individuals can do to help these animals so they do not have to be euthanized.

I just heard the shelter ill be closing too. I'd like to help and can foster a dog if it would help save a pet and give a family more time to get back on their feet. Not sure who to call to find out what can be done specifically for Sandy victims.

I share your concern and would also like to know what will happen to the 140 animals that remain unclaimed. Many Sandy victims still have no where to live and need more time before they can reclaim a pet. Can a list of the remaining animals be posted with a picture somewhere other than through the NYACC , please.

i am an otr driver and have a home n fla.-have 7 pomaranians and 6 chinchillas that are all exceptionally different pets-people r amazed that meet them/can see them on my facebook/and i would like 2 help either foster or give a new home to 2 small dogs-like poms/have lost 3 of my own n the past 2yrs/died/one of which i adopted n 2000+ when he was badly cared 4 and he went on 2 b 16yrs old-another diabetes took-and the other ??? seizure/stroke pigmy snakebite----also would like 2 know about the 2 pittbull pups pictured on ur page/my brother just lost his beloved bluepitt 2 a large rattlesnakes bite

Today is the last day this facility is open. What happens to the 140 unclaimed animals that still remain. I found none of the links provided useful.

Although I live in Florida, I can foster any dog until the owner is ready to receive them back home. If I can be of help, please let me know. I currently have a 9 year-old shepherd/husky mix and a 2 year-old doberman/greyhound mix that are friendly and playful. They would love to make a new friend and help them keep their chin-up :D

You made some Good points there. I did a search on the topic and found most people will agree with blog.aspca.org
