We are devastated to report that a three-month-old Pit Bull puppy named Joey was thrown from a car in Brentwood, Long Island, on Saturday. A witness found the tiny 10-pound pup in a plastic bag near the Sagtikos State Parkway, covered in fleas and crying out for help. Joey suffered three broken vertebrae in his neck and is recovering at the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island.

The ASPCA is offering a reward of $15,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. This reward is in addition to a $5,000 reward offered by the Suffolk County SPCA. We are also providing a $10,000 grant to the Veterinary Medical Center to offset some of the costs of treating and caring for Joey.

“We were both outraged and saddened to hear about this disturbing case of violent abuse, and the callousness that was demonstrated by those responsible,” says Matt Bershadker, Senior Vice President of the ASPCA’s Anti-Cruelty Group. “While our ultimate hope is that these types of heinous acts never occur, this is a message that cruelty toward animals will not be tolerated. We are pleased to be in a position to help those who are helping Joey.”

If you have information related to Joey’s case, please contact the Suffolk County SPCA by calling (631) 382-7722.

Bless your heart Joey and many prayers for you doll!!! Why couldn't they just take him to a shelter....why do they choose cruelty and throw the pup out the car window?? I just don't get it!!

MY PRAYER'S 4 Lil JOEY... GOD BLESS U. I HOPE WHO EVER DID THIS 2 U GO 2 JAIL 4 A LONG LONG LONG TIME...

I really like PITBULLS,but there is no reason for the cruelety that poor puppy suffered,They were talking about jail I was thinking something about 10,000 degrees hotter.Maybe just put the person guility of this act down on his knees cover him in gas and torch his worthless ass!!!

I am totally in agreemnt with you. These are defenseless living, loving creatures who on many ocassions are much better than humans. It is imperative that we start to give much more severe punishment to animal abusers. An eye for eye - put whoever did this in a bag, throw him out of a car, then gas him and light him up! I hope they catch whoever did this and throw the book at them. UGH!

I totally agree with Ina Munagorri. Take all efforts to find out this cruel heartless ruthless humanbeing and make sure that who ever that may be should suffer the same. My prayers for this innocent animal's speedy recovery.

I wouldn't even call this cruel person a humanbeign. He's really a monster to do something like this to a poor helpless puppy. I would really like to see him suffer before he goes to jail for a very l;ong time

I agree with you 100%. These cruel people should be treated the same way they treat these poor helpless souls.

You can't really talk about "prayers" and feeling compassion for the poor pup and then turn around with "an eye-for-an-eye" mentality and promote even more cruelty. Violence just begets more violence! Let's find out who did this and see if they are "teachable" at all! They are likely just ignorant schmucks out to make a buck and not able to deal with the realities of a puppy. Let's find some community service where they might learn something valuable. Closely supervised work at an animal shelter perhaps?

Some people are not "teachable". They are just evil!

I would love a piece of who ever did this to this puppy and I also agree, some people are just not teachable, but plain dam evil. I say, amputate the hand that threw the puppy out the car. Justice served then.

The problem is you cant teach people who dont want to be taught. We have continued to allow this to happen by just giving them a slap on the wrist. Its time to make this kind of act a mandatory jail sentence. I dont care about teaching them, I just want to throw them out of a car over a large bridge. Stop making excuses for them. This monster who did this is not worth my time and should be punished severely. You go ahead and play nice cop, I'll be glad to play bad cop. I hate animal abusers and would love nothing more than to have something happen to them to fit the crime they did. That was a defenseless little puppy, you want to feel sorry for the moron who did this, then go ahead, youre on your own.

It amazes me that anyone can suggest allowing this monster to work with animals. No supervision could be close enough. The very nature of the offense suggest a personality so warped that this individual had no capacity for empathy and no conscience. A miraculous redemption would be great, but the animals of the world owe this bottom dweller NOTHING.

Could not disagree more. My dogs were adopted from shelters, and I for one, would not want such a heartless being working with shelter animals. Either you have a heart, or you do not. Guess you think Michael Vick deserves to be taught, too. On that I agree. Put him in a ring with the pits he tortured, and let them teach him!

A person who would do an unspeakable act like this is not "teachable" and should never be near animals, let alone "supervised" at an animal shelter. Are you kidding?

What I can talk about is "your" mentality sickens me to My core!! Slap on the wrist with these kind of people, one's who has deep dark serious mental problems, one that abuses animals and or children need to go work out their problems doing commumity service!! Sure, that would solve everthing! hey I have a idea, one that does not promote "Eye for a Eye" how about this person or persons come to your house and you can preach and supervise their wrongful inhuman act!You have no voice for this animal and I resent every word you wrote!!!!!!!

You can't teach compassion, either you have it or you don't. I have a Shar pei that was also thrown from a car when he was 3 months old. He had damage to his left front leg and now walks with a bad limp and sometimes drags his little foot. The vet that treated him thinks whoever had him somehow wired his mouth shut because he has indentations on his teeth and had to have several removed. He is now 5 1/2 years old and lives like a king knowing he is safe and no one will ever hurt him again. I believe anyone who hurts or kills an animal deserves the same fate. Just remember, when judgement day comes, they will stand in front of GOD and have to answer to Him.

I don't believe ignorance has anything to do with cruelty like this.

If I was in a position like an animal court judge, I would not only fine the A..H... at least $20,000 but also sentence him/her to at least 15 years in prison WITHOUT the possibility of parole. I HATE people like this. There is no excuse whatsoever for this kind of treatment or ANY other cruelty to defenseless animals.

Poor Soul; It's horrendous to harm anyone especially a defenseless puppy. I do not care what the punishment; is it's not enough. Hell is even to easy on people who do this to innocents; IE; Children and animals.

God bless this precious puppy and all who care for him. I really hope he finds a good home. And I agree--I think Hell is too good for those who abuse children and animals.

I CANNOT BEAR TO READ SUCH HORRID STORIES.PEOPLE HAVE BEEN TORTURING ANIMALS FOR WHATEVER REASON,AND IT SEEMS THIS IS GETTING TO BE A REGULAR,DAILY DEVASTATION.WHY? I WISH I KNEW BUT I SAY LETS DO TO THESE PEOPLE THE SAME PUNISHMENT THAT WAS DOE TO AN ANIMAL.AS I GROW OLDER,I FEEL SO UCH FOR EVERY LIVING ANIMAL,MAMMAL,AMPHIBIAN,ETC.I'M FINDING IT HARDER AND HARDER TO TRUST MANKIND.IF I COULD,I WOULD TAKE IN EVERY ANIMAL,BUT SINCE I CANNOT,I DONATE,PLEASE EVERYONE,GIVE A LITTLE MORE THIS MONTH,THEY NEED US MORE THAN EVER!

Deidre I agree with you, and I also cannot take every animal as much as I'd love to so that is why I give on a monthly basis to the ASPCA. I would love to one day have a place for all homeless and unwanted animals, GOD willing I will be blessed enough to do this very soon. I'll be praying for this beautiful puppy to heal fast!

oh my gosh I totally agree. the older I get the less tolerate of humans. I know there are some wonderful ppl out there. but I trust very few.

I COULDN'T HAVE SAID IT BETTER.....AND AS MUCH AS IT HURTS ME TO READ AND SEE THESE STORIES WE NNED TO....TO HELP OUR DEFENSELESS & LOVING ANIMALS. IT TOUCHES MY HEART TO SEE PEOPLE AT LEAST HERE THAT SEEM TO SHARE MY FEELINGS FOR ANIMALS, INSTEAD OF GOSSIPING ABOUT SHAMELESS HOLLYWOOD WANABEES & ACTORS AS WELL AS GREEDY SPORTS PLAYERS. IF MORE PEOPLE CARED FOR ANIMALS THAN THE PETTINESS AND GREED OF THE WORLD WE WOULD BE SO MUCH BETTER OFF. I BELIEVE PEOPLE WOULD BE KINDER & GENTLER.

You read my mind, that is exactly what I think. Please everyone out there try to donate if you can to all these animal organizations that are trying to help animals. Thank you.

So right RE: pettiness and greed that oozes from humans needs to be redirected towards a giving/caring cause. Please realize that only when compasion is felt for all other life forms can we (humans)really become evolved. Joey best to you and get better !! thank you ,care-givers, too!

I thought it was just me. I am growing more and more disturbed by this as I age. I thought it was just me! I also agree that maybe Prayer Woman should get the offender serving his hours of community service, since she advocates it. Personally I am appalled at the light sentences they do get, much less getting community service (which alarmingly does happen). Let's get Joey lots of love so he doesn't already think in his young life that people are abusive.

I completely agree. I despise the scum who treat little helpless pups and animals so terribly. Give them the same punishment! The laws in this country are too lenient to those scum - there was a case here: the little dog was so mistreated and starving and everyone knew who did it. Guess what - the so-called 'judge' gave the monster a slap on the wrist. I was furious. This is beyond disgusting.

I Totally agree that the person responsible for this act should get Life in Jail, because God put us on this earth to be Guardians of the animal world. Why should a animal's life be less than a human. What if it was a child in that bag instead of a puppy? Why should this animal get away with attempted murder? Laws should be changed, because if a human can do this to a defenseless animal then he can easily become a serial killer

Children in a bag are damaged via abortion & is often seen as ok. I would have rather they had let the dog out in a populated area were he could have had a chance or if they planned to kill him do it humanely. I don't condone either & am glad Joey is alive & pray for a recovery. This type act does make me have thoughts of smacking the perp with a hammer a few times. It's s piece of evil.

"Children in a bag are damaged via abortion & is often seen as ok." Please do not hijack threads so you can proselytize on other (unrelated) issues.

Thank you for mentioning abortion. Very true. Many people are more concerned for the well being of animals than of human children. I am not condoning cruelty to animals, but there is something wrong when puppies that are thrown away in plastic bags receive more shock than babies that are treated in the same way.

The person who did this is not an animal---it is no better than a demon. Unfortunately, these demons are all over, and it is up to we people to find them and do what we can to send them home to Hades. My new baby puppy, Poppy, and I wish only the best blessings for dear Joey, and hope for his rapid recovery.

I wholeheartedly agree with Robin !!! Laws need to be changed. Like she said who's to Stop them from doing the same thing to a Baby or young child they don't want. I'm very Happy that someone found Joey and got him to the Hospital.

This is how serial killers start out. By torturing innocent animals that just want to give unconditional love. You are right about us being Guardians to all these precious animals. This cruel act that Joey indured is very upsetting. And yes Hell is too good for all that harm animals.

usually when people start doing these things to helpless animals, it continues on to people. It is a known fact that, people who are abusers of animals will grow up to be an abuser or rapest.

I agree with you. These poor excuses for human beings need to be punished.

I agree with all ur comments wiped this CRUEL HUMAN off this EARTH, With eenemies like this know wounder are animals and kids are afraid of us GOOD HUMANS, that just want to HELP, stay in their JOEY and RECOVER soon LOVE Johnnie

I couldn't have said it better Michael!! me too!!

Michael, I totally agree with you. Make these people pay. Let these horable people know that there are consquences and they are serious. I'm not sure they should ever get out. DO UNTO OTHERS... I guess we can't throw them out of a moving car. Or can we? It sure is tempting.

This story broke my heart, I have five beloved pooches and one cat who are a very important part of our family, they need to go to jail for this, people need to realize that our Beloved Lord created all animal's as he did us, we have five pooches and one cat and now a horse and they are treated with love and attention as all animals should be, I hope this person pays for what he did, we have a total of five beloved pooches, who are family and always will be our beloved four legged family members, I hope the person that did this gets put in jail, for it, he or she deserves to pay for being so crule!

I totally agree!

I totally agree an eye for an eye. They should do the same thing to him and make him suffer 10 times more than this poor helpless puppy has. Were praying for u Joey

I agree with u Michelle totally ! My thought and prayers are with Joey -hoping you reover from this horrible event in your youg life-Rena

I agree until we start giving severe penalties for abuse of animals people are not going to stop. We need to raise our penalties for abuse.

I agree the laws for punishment for abusing any animal should be more harsh...no not even harsh they should be severe like prison or the electric chair...

It makes me physically sick to think about what that puppy went through! The basterd deserves life!

Why would anyone do this? He must be a very cruel, evil person, possibly a psycopath.Obviously he got a thrill or some sick feeling from inflicting this pain and suffering on an innocent precious puppy. This sickens me.I am so glsd that he was rescued and that the reward is so great. MANKIND!

I wish I knew why (and how) anyone could do such a horrible thing! I can't even begin to understand how people can hurt animals at all! There is just no humanity left in humans! Best wishes to Joey and all the other suffering animals out there! I hope we can get stricter penalties for animal abuse!

LOVED your coment! I TOTALY AGREE! Keep up the good work!
