ASPCA Handing Out Supplies to Pet Parents in Need

Right now in New York City, thousands of people are waiting in lines, some that stretch for blocks. They’re waiting for the basic necessities: food, water, toilet paper and, yes, pet food.

Victims of Sandy have been through so much, but that doesn’t mean they’ve stopped caring about their pets. For some NYC residents, their pets may be all they have left.

So as early as we could, the ASPCA began visiting some of the hardest hit areas with desperately needed pet supplies like dog food, cat food and cat litter. At each location, we’ve barely opened up our trucks before they are emptied by pet parents in need.

As our responders handed out supplies to everyone we could this afternoon, an 11- or 12-year-old boy stopped to thank us.

“Thank you so much,” he said. “I have a dog at home, and he’s hungry.”

Help us continue to provide food, supplies and relief for those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

I would like to know if it's true that you put down an animal if they can not be placed in a loving home, if so, how would that make you any different from the people that harm or even kill them. Eventually you will do the same and by loving hands. If what I heard is true.

Right now, many places do still put down animals usually due to a lack of space at their facilities. It's awful and that it why so many people are fighting for their friends/families/neighbors to get their pets fixed so that they don't coninue to reproduce and worsen the situation. However, if shelters don't put animals down right now, then there is no space for anyone to surrender their pet or bring in litter after litter of kittens that they find. The only solution then would be to turn the animals over to the street and spread disease/get injured, etc. So once EVERYONE comes together to help shelters by fixing feral cats with TNR, fixing their own pets, and just stopping being ignorant, then it is expected that very shortly no shelter will have to put down any adoptable animals simply due to a lack of space. But they need everyone's help.

I thought the goal was to stop the abuse and or killing of all animals and prosecute those who would committ these crimes, so maybe you should rethink your position about having to put these animals down and build an area for long term housing, and invest in animal education and the importance there of.

I think you may be blissfully ignorant to the real problem that is out there. Dont attack the ASPCA- at least they are doing something. Thank them for what they do rather than attack for what they don't. Especially on an article about then HELPING animals in need RIGHT NOW. Where are you right now?

I couln't agree more! No kill shelters are not possible until every human spays or neuters all pets always. The official post was effective, concise, and tactful. Thank you from someone with a potty mouth and big attitude. I will make an effort to memorize the statement so that in the future I may inform rather than scold the ignorant!

The ASPCA actually picks up a lot of cats and dogs from kills shelters. Go out there and adopt or volunteer instead of ranting online. Save a life.
