ASPCA Arrests Father and Son for Beating Cat to Death

We never get used to it. No matter how many cases of cruelty our team investigates, the brutality of it still hits us hard in the heart. This case was no exception. In mid-July our Humane Law Enforcement department received a call from an eyewitness who saw a father and son beating their cat to death with a stick. We jumped into action.

Quickly finding the deceased cat in a garbage bag on the side of the road, our Agents subsequently obtained a search warrant for the home. A search uncovered a broken stick encrusted with cat fibers and blood in the attic. Jean Rog Murat, 60, and his son, Robenson Murat, 29, were arrested and taken into custody.

The Kings County District Attorney indicted the duo on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals; overdriving, torturing and injuring animals; and failure to provide proper sustenance for animals. If convicted, the defendants will face a maximum of two years of incarceration.

“This was a heinous act on an innocent animal and a clear case of violent abuse,” says Stacy Wolf, Vice President and Chief Counsel of the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement department. “We praise the district attorney for his commitment to hold these perpetrators accountable for their cruel and callous acts.”

I wish with all my heart there were stricter laws for people that abuse animals. I think these people deserve harsh punishment. There is nothing requiring you to have a pet, so why in the world have one only to abuse it. These people are the real animals!!!

Sad, horrific, and heinous. I'm not sure what's worse: the act itself, or the fact that two adults were responsible. Neither of them thought "hey, this is wrong"? Sick. And since animal abuse is often a precursor to abuse of larger animals (i.e., children, adults) - I shudder to think what/who else these sick f*$ks reserved their "beating stick" for. Get rid of them. Five years as a minimum and a lifetime of being on the "no animals" and "likely a sociopathic killer" list. Track 'em with a cartridge shot between the shoulder blades.

These 2 men would not want to run into me. I think they should get beat to death just like they did that innocent cat. I have 2 cats that are the lights of my life. It breaks my heart to hear about any animal being abused.

Oh hell no. 2 years? THAT'S IT???? I cannot imagine putting any harm on my cats. I live with 5. If I see ANYONE beating an animal- God only knows what I'd do to them... WE NEED STRICTER PUNISHMENT!!! 2 years is like a slap on the wrist. Although none of our punishment amounts to the Lord's. R.I.P. kitty. :( I gotta go hug my kitties now... :'(

When are the laws going to change to bring stronger penalties for this acts of violence!!!! The poor innocent cat : ( I can only imagine the pain and suffering during this bruetly act and for what purpose. These two adults should feel the pain this poor cat did!!

Jail time for murdering an animal should be the same length as for murdering a human. Someone who has that little value for life is bound to hurt other people, too.

Why would someone do this? An animal is like a person it may be furry or scaley but it can be your best friend. Their there when your sad, to cheer you up. Yet these two guys thought of the poor cat as a something to beat. This is sad. People can be cruel.

And that sentence would only be on the off-chance that the father and son are actually convicted. Unfortunately, even that is unlikely to happen. Oh, if there were good karma, how those two would REALLY suffer!

we should beat the shit out of them , and make a law for people who abuse animals, a law like people who want to buy animals and should pass a test and every day make somebody come to their home to see how their are with their cats and dogs

I can't understand why someone old do this! I would love to beat them with a stick!!!!!! We need tougher laws to protect animals. We are their voice!!!!! I pray this father and son get the maximum penalty AND that they are never allowed to own an animal!!!! I seriously want to beat them!!!!!! That makes me a bad person to think that way but I can't help it! And.....why were they saving the stick?????? To do it again??????

2 years is a complete joke. I really agree with everyone here. Stricter laws and punishments are necessary. I'm usually against violence in any form but when I hear of something like this - a sentence of death by beating with a stick sounds absolutely fitting for these men. It's scary to think how anyone can adopt a pet and what they do to them behind closed doors we may never know. There's so few safe gaurds in place for these animals - dogs and cats can't call 911, they can't go to school where the teachers and counselors can notice something wrong. We need to protect these animals. The vast majority of us who would never hurt an animal need to view it as our responsibility to protect these animals against sick individuals like these.
