Adopting Nemo

Wendy Kling shared her story of taking a chance on a special needs dog named Nemo at the ASPCA Adoption Center, just in time for Christmas.

It has been more than one year since we welcomed Nemo into our home on Christmas Eve. He had an interesting journey here, beginning with my husband spotting him one morning on Fox News wearing a little red jacket asking to be adopted. He called me in to take a look and, after realizing Nemo was missing a back leg, I thought, "Would we really be able to take care of a pet with special needs?" I said no to adopting him and went to work.

I thought about Nemo for the next few days and joked that all I wanted for Christmas was a three-legged-dog under my tree. That set the ball in motion. My husband found him at the ASPCA, and without my knowledge, set up an appointment to see him on Christmas Eve. My husband, Will; daughter Marisa; our Husky, Mishka, and I drove to the city from Quakertown, Pennsylvania.  After spending several hours with the wonderful staff there, we signed the paperwork and brought our new family member home to spend Christmas morning watching us unwrap presents.

Nemo is a wonderful dog who is full of personality and a bit of a lounger. He also tends to make us forget that he is missing a leg—except when we’re picking him up to carry him to bed every night and downstairs in the morning.

Just recently, I saw him featured in an ASPCA commercial. What a surprise! To us, he is a bit of a celebrity. Thank you, ASPCA, for making that night such a memorable one and for allowing us to bring Nemo home and become one of us. I tell everyone I know who is looking for a pet to adopt, adopt, adopt!

Thank you to Wendy, Will, Marisa and huskie Miskka, the wonderful King Family, for opening their hearts and bringing this adorable dog into their home. Can't ask for a more meaningful Christmas present than Nemo. I also loved reading that someone carries little Nemo to bed every night and downstairs in the morning. How touching, how loving & caring. You are all blessed.

This puppy is really pretty and cute. I am also going to adopt a puppy and will surely give the same name (Nemo) to him. I like his blushing eyes.

I have a three legged dog - Tuffy - he is missing one of his front legs but you would never know it. He runs and plays with all of the other dogs. Thank you for adopting a special needs doggie!

This is so true, the love of animals makes your entire household smile. My little Pomeranian makes paw prints in my heart everyday. He was a shelter dog rescued from a breeder who had 100 dogs n crates in the barn. Nemo is lucky to find his furever family, but they are even luckier.

Great story! When my brother moved out into the country, the property he bought had a three legged dog living on it. My brother took him in and he was the best dog. He got around so well, you couldn't even tell he was missing a leg. Don't know how people can live with themselves when they abandon a pet. Congrats on your forever home Nemo.

How can someone drive away and leave a helpless, innocent, uncomprehending animal sitting there? Detestable. Heart-wrenching. I don't think there is much else that can make me feel so sad.

Thank you for making Nemo a loved family member. And to all of you out there caring for these wonderful God's gifts to us. I too have a pup (Zak) that I adopted from a shelter. He has a heart condition and I was told may not live more than a few months. He was from a puppy mill. I decided a few months being loved by a pet parent was better than another day without his very own home. Zak has been with me for almost 4 yrs and you'd never know his ails from anything. Love is the key. He has brought me alot of joy like Nemo is for you. God bless you Kling family.

To Zak's Mom....Thank you for being such a caring and passionate person to take Zak in and giving him a wonderful and loving Mom to take him through the later part of his journey in tehis life. I had a poodle who had a heart condition....I cared for him so much in the last couple of years of his life....I had him for 14 wonderful years and he was my soulmate. I now have a poodle who is now 11 and a half with a slight heart condition. I have had him since 3 months old and I absolutely love him. They give us such love and devotion that caring for them in their later years means so very much. God Bless You for taking Zak in and giving him such love now when he needs it.....Mary

You were a wonderful person to adopt an animal knowing you only had this pet for a short time. You both were rewarded for that action I believe for your kind gesture. Look how long you have had to spend with Zaks. Losing a pet is so hard and the pain is so intense that after going through it some cant imagine bringing another furry family member into the home only to repeat it all over again but the love and joy they bring to us is worth the pain I feel. Months before Nemo we lost our Cocker Spaniel Louis that we loved beyond words. w e had him for 6 years and fought so hard to keep him with us but he had cancer and it was too much for him and us to fight so we had to make one of the hardest, saddest choices to euthanize. We were heart broken for months and then Nemo came along and though I still have awesome memories of Louis we now give him and Mishka's just as much love. Mishka's is also a rescue dog. Nemo and Mishka are best friends. Like you said even a short time in a loving home is a gift to an unwanted, abused pet. Good luck with your Zaks.

I ALSO ADOPTED A 3 LEGGED GIRL , LEFT TIED TO A WIRED. SHE IS HAPPY, PLAYFUL, SMART AND OBEDIENT. SHE PLAYS WITH A OLD BASKETBALL AND HAS BEEN NAMED "MISS PERSONALITY" LOVE HER AND DONT REGRET ONE SINGLE SECOND. I THANK HER FOR ADOPTING ME!!!

Nemo looks a lot like a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, not a Cocker. We have a Cavalier and he's a total love. He's 16 years old, nearly blind and going deaf but moves like a puppy when it comes to food! They're prone to heart trouble but he has no sign of any. I wish you the best with Nemo, he looks like a wonderful addition to your family.
