The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Black Cat

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

Unfortunately, the truth is kinda scary, too: Year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. In fact, black animals in general take more time to find homes, says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the Adoption Center.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

I had the nicest black cat just move in and decide to live with me. I had him for many years he was very large and long haired but everyone who met Spook loved him. He sat on my lap every evening when I was at the computer with his paws on the desk as though he was part of the game also. When he got sick I took him to vet and he stayed in the vet hospital for a week and then came home but whatever was wrong with him was fatal and I wound up having to have him put to sleep. It was hard but you love them as long as you can and then you do what you have to do for them. Every one at the vet hospital fell in love with him and my vet sent a large donation in Spooks memory to a local pet charity. I now have another cat which also just moved in and decided to stay. it was a feral cat and is still a little wild but a really neat cat. We named it Skitzo Kitty for a reason. She loves me but does not care for anyone else. I trapped her when she first moved in and had her fixed. She sleeps on my bed right up against me and purrs every night. She also loves my Schnauzer dog. I guess I am just a sucker for animals and they know it as I have had many animals over the years that just wander in and stay. I always kept my black kitty in the house around Halloween just to be sure she was safe.

We own two adorable and LOVING cats, one tuxedo!! mostly black with white, she's the sweetest. I can't imagine anyone not taking in pets just because of their color, that is just inhumane, and ridiculous if you ask me! Color shouldn't even be a factor, black cats are Beautiful, and the cutest! We couldn't imagine life without our little furry ones, we love them unconditionally and if it came down to adopting another cat, I wouldn't hesitate to adopt a black kitty, now knowing what I now know! :)

We adopted a black kitten March last year, she was found on the streets at 3 weeks when she came to us at the vet hospital I worked at. She's such a character, always wanting cuddles, talking to us and just being an adorable companion. We love calling her a little black panther, the colour is awesome to look at; black really is for the win! She's such a sleek looking cat. I went to a Halloween party on the weekend at a witch and got some pics with her as the stereotype. Nothing wrong with black cats I prefer them to be honest! They look heaps cool!

My black cat Coco adopted me about 4 years ago. I had just lost my beloved Persian a couple months earlier. I needed a little four legged friend to make me smile again. I had visited several places to meet with kitties but none seemed that interested in me. I was about to give up thinking that maybe it was just too soon to adopt. Then, I met Coco. She curled up in my lap. I picked her up and said would you like to go home with me and she curled up and fell asleep above my heart. I knew she was the one. She had chosen me. She is the best little kitty. She has so much personality and so much love to give. I didn't set out to adopt a black cat but, I am so glad I found her.

I have several black cats and they are just like any other cat. They need love, understanding, care and lots of attention. I received these joys by taking in a stray that was already pregnant. All of my cats are spayed and neutered, which was done as soon as possible after their birth and the mom was also spayed asap after their birth. They are very loving and very independent. They have a little wild in the them that is why they are independent. They all stay in my house and can sometimes be quite messy, so I am constantly cleaning up after them. Sweeping up litter and finding little items they have found to play with. I took on the responsiblity when on took the mama kitty into my house and have taken it completely but the joy of their love is more than the work they require. The cats will probably outlive me because I keep them as safe as possible. I love them all. Coal, Scaredy cat, Blackie and their torti sisters Fluffy, Snickers and the Mama kitty.

Our cat Nala was a black kitty. We had her 5 years until she passed away from feline leukemia. It broke our hearts to loose her as she was the best cat I have ever had the pleasure to take care of. Nala had so much personality. She would talk to us by making little sounds when we talked to her. She also was the biggest cuddle kitty!!! We sure miss our Nala kitty.

Four years ago halloween night, my husband and I were blessed with a little black Kitten. :) We had spent most of the fall time taking care of the mother cat, who was pure black with a white splotch on her chest and one on the tip of her tail. As the weather grew colder she made a home underneith our deck, and as little meows soon filled the yard, we realized that she had finally gave birth to her kittens. Two little black babies. We named one Magickal and the second kitten Salem..Unfortunatly as the weather grew colder little Salem died of exposure. The day we found his little body we brought the other kitten in, and the mother cat eventually disappeared. But I must say my little Magickal is one of the best cats, I have ever owned, smart as a whip and very vocal. I will always encourage the adoption of a black cat!

Valentine adopted me in 2007. She is such a unique DMH black cat. I never had a cat that plays fetch with you!!! Of course the ball has to be a balled up wrapper which contained a Wendy's burger in it. You toss it down the hall with hardwood floors and she turns into David Beckham the soccer star kicking it all the way down the hall. Then she picks it up and brings it back to you to do all over again. She has brought so much love to else .... I LOVE BLACK CATS!!!

I just rescued 4 ferel kittens. Two are black, one yellow, and one grey calico. They were really wild. I have had them about 5 weeks. They now come and sit in my lap while I am watching TV. All they want is to be loved. It is amazing how quickly they gentled. Of course, they will all be fixed and vacinated, but right now my 2 panthers, 1 tiger, and 1 cheetah are happy getting to know their new home. Black cats are just like the rest--please don't descriminate.

Warning: My husband and I took a little stray black kitten into our home in 2006......it's 2012 and we've added two more (both strays!). To be honest, one is black with a white chest, but we don't hold it against her. We would love these guys whether they were white, brown, tan or purple, but I encourage everyone to please consider black cats when adopting since they are sometimes overlooked!

I have a black cat named Caesar and I love him to death. He is sweet and loving and loves to snuggle with me on the couch. I can't imagine life without him.

A stray black cat showed up at our door one night. Hungry and brave he just walked in! Every night he would show up and sleep on our carport. Bleeding hearts that we are, we kept him. He eventually starting living in the house with our 2 other cats. He's HUGE, but not dominating. He's actually the sweetest cat I've ever known. He loves to sleep on your lap and constantly wants his head scratched. At night he crawls on the bed and snuggles. We nicknamed him Snuggalupagus. His affection baffles us, but maybe it's more gratitude for taking him in. Either way, he has definitely become our "favorite" but don't tell the other ones!

We are new foster parents for an awesome black cat named Junior. He is the most affectionate and gentle cat we have ever met, and we still can't believe he is 18! He chases his tail like a kitten and plays with his toys with great energy. The fact that he is a black cat has nothng to do with his adorable personality. He is friendly to everyone.

Condolences black cats! Superstition is a shame!

I have a black cat at home. Though she's very scared of people (even us at times) she can be VERY sweet when she's ready to cuddle. At my work (Auto Salvage Yard), we found her in one of our cars in the yard. She was only 6 months old, and very dehydrated. My brother took her home and gave her food and water. She then has become a huge part of the family! I'm sure her still being timid these last 3 years was because she was probably so frightened of everything that happened before we found her.

We adopted a handsome, elegant, intelligent 10-month old black cat in 1991. He was my dear friend and companion for another 18 years. Never have I met a sweeter-dispositioned, friendlier, laid-back cat. We miss him so much. He was diabetic and took his twice daily insulin injections like a trooper. Don't hesitate to adopt a black cat because of scary legends or worries about fur on the furniture. That's why God invented masking tape.

I fed a black feral cat for almost a year. One day there was a group that was doing the Trap, neuter, spay release thing for the feral cats where I was feeding her and they trapped her. I asked that when they brought them back to release them if I could just take her home instead of releasing her. I did just that and all I can say is that it was a labor of love, lots of patience but that feral black kitty (now named Lucy) a year and a half later is the most loving kitty and a treasure in our home. We have four Chihuahua's and she loves them all but she is strongly bonded to the oldest one. I could write a book about our Lucy. So you can see black kittys are every bit as loving as any other color of cat. Lucy had to get used to every sound in the house, the feel of everything in the house the dogs, my husband, friends and family. She has never tried to get outside, she is loving, she is happy and she is a joy to have. It took a year before I could pick her up although she did like to be petted. She does everything the dogs do and she has no clue she is a kitty! She gets up on two things, the bed and the loveseat. She does not jump on anything. Lucy studied the pups for a few months when she first got here and whatever they do is what she does!! She does come out when we have someone here but that took a while and she does go up to a select few to get a pet but for some they just get to talk to her and look at her. She makes positive changes every few months and she keeps adding a few people here and there to her select few that gets to pet her! We can do about anything to her now as she has grown to love and trust us.To the lady that has the little kitten on her porch, take her in, you won't be sorry! If you can't take the baby inside, get someone to help you because it is not a pretty life for a kitty to grow up feral.

My black rescue, Onyx, is one of the sweetest cats I've ever met. She is wonderful with my new kitten, and she was a sweetheart with my 21 year old tomcat. I also had a black tomcat who was just a doll, funny and loving. Black cats have such pretty, shiny coats and gorgeous eyes. I know many of the shelters and organizations have black kitties that need homes. Try one, they are special!

First off... Pagans and Wiccans DO use black cats (or for that matter ANY animal) in their rituals. They are known as familiars and we do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT harm them. Secondly, I have three of them, and if my cities ordinance would allow it, I would have a few more. People that think black cats are unlucky REALLY need to get a life and STOP discriminating!

Black cats are said to be the most affectionate, as well as very smart and playful. I believe that God gave them extra affection because He knew that mankind would be prejudiced. All 3 of mine constantly follow me for attention, and try to climb my legs begging to be picked up and cradled. They are like toddlers extending arms so that daddy will pick them up. I have had 5 black cats, and each has been very affectionate. My other cats are special in their way, but the black cats are truly special. Adopt a black cat, and I am certain you will be showered with affection. Just give them a bit of attention, and they will be all over you.

I am an ecstatic owner of an all black kitty. His name is Shadow and he is awesome. His coloration gives him such a regal appearance. He is just so handsome. I love all cats and always have, but I looked specifically for a black cat when I was finally able to have one. He is the best!

I have a black beauty named Karma that I adopted from the SPCA 2 years ago. She is a. absolutely amazing cat. Everyone of my friends LOVE her. Even people who told me they don't like cats are now in love with cats because of her. Her personality couldn't be any more of a perfect fit to mine :) I spoil her rotten with attention and new toys all the time. She even plays fetch!

I have 2 very special black cats I call The Njnjies. Alone they are Chit & Chat because they talk to each other and me. At work we rescued a litter of kittens from the property and all were adopted but the Ninjies because they are black. Then we saved a second litter and the Ninjies still went Unadopted and I ended up taking them home with me and have loved them dearly. They are beautiful sweet cats. Spoiled rotten too.

It makes me so sad that black cats are least likely to get adopted, people should not judge a book by it's cover! I have a little black kitty named Wally and I love him SO much! He's super sweet and playful, he's my baby!!!

you said that purrrfectly! People really shouldnt judge a book by its cover because myths arent true, and black cats are just as loveable as any other cat!

My mom has had a black cat that she originally named picasso, but he's so fat we've re-named him mush over the years pretty much. He's actually very lucky, he's never really gotton sick, and is nearly 15 years old!

I have a black cat - his name is "Punk". I rescued him from the shelter I was volunteering at about a year ago. He was brought in with five of his siblings when his mother was hit and killed by a car. The kittens were found trying to nurse off of their dead mother in the road. Anyway, Punk was about five weeks old when I brought him home - and now he's a beautiful one year old. He's huge, not fat, just muscled - and he's the most affectionate cat I've ever had. His black coat is like velvet, and he has big bright yellow eyes. When he purrs, which is whenever he's awake, you can hear it all over the room. He was just neutered recently, and he's doing great - acts like it didn't even happen. He's a sweetheart, and I wouldn't give him up for anything. Here's a picture of him. Isn't he gorgeous? http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/561842_10152131245850346_1402689002_n.jpg

He is adoooorrrraaaabbblllleeeeeeee!!!!!! :D http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash3/561842_10152131245850346_1402689002_n.jpg

I adore little black kitties, they are just bred for love, period, and that is a pure-bred fact! My grandma used to have a black cat named Holly, and every year during halloween she would have to keep her little kitty pooked up in the house because some people would go trick-or-treating in her neighborhood and mess with Holly. It was soooooo sad for Holly and my grandma. :(

I have a big black cat but he does have a little white patch. His name is Salem and he talks to us all the time. We ask a ? and he meows and sometimes double meows. We cant him him to stop sometimes. He is very gentle but tries to escape out the front door once in awhile even though he is an indoor cat. I wouldn't get rid of him for any reason.

I adopted a black kitty and her name is Wally. Shes the sweetest thing ever! I love her very much. You wont go wrong adopting a black kitty.

I have a Black Cat, I was going to name him Blackie, but was told that was "Politacally incorrect" So I named him Spotty Cat, he does have a little white spot, that only I can see. I found him and I love him.

I had a beautiful black cat for 16 years! His name was Oliver & he was the sweetest little boy. I do believe they are good luck, not bad. I was going through a bad breakup & was considering suicide. I was in the bathroom about to take some pills & Ollie walked in. I saw him & thought I can't leave him here to fend for himself, plus I didn't want my ex to have him! He was really my good luck charm cat. I want to get another black cat but right now I have 5 cats! My next cat for sure will be a black one!

We found our black kitty in a fire wood pile living on crickets and rain water. He had ticks all over him and barely weighed a pound. We nursed him back to health and named him Sgt. Pepper (Peppy for short). We don't have any kids, so he is our baby. He is a sweetheart. I would like to add that you should be cautious about letting any animal wander around outside close to Halloween. I grew up in the country where a lot of animals were "dumped" and heard a horrible story about what happened to a few neighborhood cats one year. I never saw anything, but just to be safe, we keep our baby inside in October.

Our first family caat was a cat named Frisbee who actually adopted us when his family got a new kitten. He won our hearts and when our oldest daughter left for college, our neighbors agreed that he would be happier with us. That was when he formally moved in although he already had a favorite chair picked out. He was kind, loving, patient, and above all, independent. He had so much love that, five years later, the day after he passed away we rushed to the shelter and got two kittens to try and replace him. He will always be special in our eyes. It was as if he held some special secret that he kept to himself. I still miss my boy five years later.

I always thought I was a dog person...always loved all animals, but thought I could never have a cat due to my mum's asthma. Well, I ended up adopting a little black kitten 7 years ago and he has turned my world upside down. He's very dignified looking, but all he wants is to cuddle and nuzzle. I'm crazy about cats thanks to my little blessing.

Black cats rock! They are truly special. My one came into my life 5 years ago when he was thrown over the wall of our complex and left :( We were just getting over the void left from our previous cat who died in a car accident a month before, but i didn't hesitate in taking him into our home, and have never regretted a day since! Snuggles has such personality and charm. If anything he is our good luck charm!

My nephew brought me a newborn black kitten who had not yet even opened her eyes when he was 5 years old and I told him I didn't like black cats he then said "but Syssi you have to take her her Mommy's gone and you're the only one who can love her right." Well I took that kitten and fell so deeply in love there was no way out. My nephew is now 16 and my black cat who's name is Precious Hope is working strongly on 12 and still thinks she's a kitten! She has to be one of the most loving cats I've had in my life for someone who use to fear black cats!!! She also gives the best kitty kisses ever. We did have to put bells on her to keep up with her little black self when she hid. Don't be worried about black cats they are awesome!

A little mama cat, several years ago, gave birth to her first and only litter in the driveway, beside my car. The driveway has pebbles & is real rough, so when mom took a quick bathroom break, I put a little blanket down, hoping she and her just-born 5-6 kittens would get on it. After much investigation, of course, they did. There were, I believe, about 4 big, healthy, multicolored kitties, and 2 little tiny 'runt' twins - a solid black one and a solid white one. The little white one didn't make it, but her little solid black twin turned out to be the liveliest, funniest, most energetic one. She couldn't HAVE enough fun. When they others would try to sleep, the little black girl would either play in the leaves (late Fall) by herself, or try to wake some of her siblings up to play. If that didn't work, Mom would sometimes oblige with her tail as a play-toy. We finally, since we couldn't stop watching (mama and ALL of her kittens - who had thankfully migrated to a warm, padded box in the garage, with food & water), but ESPECIALLY the cutest, little, funniest black girl. We know she was a girl because we had to bring her in - "Bella" was a keeper. Today, at least 6 years later, Bella is still the exact same as she was as a kitten. She's VERY well-nourished and taken care of, but is still very small for a full grown cat. At her latest checkup, a few months ago, she got an A++. She still has gobs of energy (even at 5-6am!), she's still SO FUNNY, and SO SMART. Some of her very favorite things are the computer printer (I can't describe her fascination with this thing), she loves pens, plastic milk carton tabs, anything shiny; she also loves her window spots - she has one in the front of the house, and one at the back. She RUNS back and forth, always afraid that she's missing out on what's going at the OTHER one. She likes to look outside, but she wouldn't trade her (spoiled) inside life with us for the world. She loves us to death, and if we are sitting or laying down, she usually is too - right beside us, or preferably on top of one of us. We don't know what we would do without her. PLEASE - give black cats a chance, too! You'll probably get a treasure like we did!! *(TIP: Black cats look better than any other color cats, I think, with real bright collars. We have a fluorescent yellow collar on Bella, and it looks so pretty on her shiny, silky, black coat. (The kids will love to pick out the 'best collar' for your black cat.) It also keeps us from tripping over her in the dark; but most importantly, if she ever gets out - which we try VERY hard to prevent, but if she does - cars can spot the bright collar.)

My dearly departed black cat named Black Cat was the most amazing cat. Her eyes held so much emotion, I often times told people that she can stare into yer soul, that she knows everything. She's the one person that can help me whenever I felt depressed. We have conversations and she would look me in the eye as she'd reply. There's also been Raven he was a wise old coot. And my current black cat, Sakamoto-san is beyond affectionate. He doesn't exactly know when to stop.

my daughter adopted a 4 month old black cat from the shelter here a year ago september 20. her name is black pearl. pearl is the sweetest cat i have ever seen. she loves her belly to be rubbed. she purrs at the slightest touch. she has never used her claws on a person. she won't even use her claws when the 65# dog bothers her. i can't imagine why black cats are so hard to place. we all love pearl very much.

I love all cats, and especially black cats. They seem to know that people feel a certain way about them and really appreciate all the love and attention they receive. They give back ten fold any kindness given to them. They (like most cats) are sensitive warm and funny, they really do have a sense of humor and soulful eyes. My cat is named Lovey, because she always wants to love and to be loved. Please love me is what her eyes say, and we have responded accordingly, and it has always been returned. She is a great lady, and a wonderful companion.

This is so sad :( I have a black Japanese bobtail that is the most lovey, cuddly little boy. All my favorite cats have been black, too.

We have two black cats at home (Blackie and Gillie). We adopted Blackie from our local animal shelter and Gillie from a shelter near my college. They are fantastic cats, very loving and fun to watch. Please give black cats a chance!

Our black cat, Dusty, will be lucky number 13 in November on Thanksgiving Day. She's been a joy to us ever since she was five weeks old. She's perfect for Halloween when she hangs around the house as the trick or treaters come to the door and notice her. Many of them comment about her as if she is part of the decorations.

My wonderful black cat "Char" passed away recently after 16 years and a bout with a tumor. I was so despondent toward the end of his life and talked about how much I was going to miss him. Before he passed another little black cat started hanging around my house and I started feeding her. Char passed and I thought about the strange "new" arrival. Didn't realize she was a "she" and that she would soon move three little black and one striped kitten to my yard. I love them but be careful what you ask for. The father, also a beautiful black cat, came along also. They are black with a white trianglg on their throats.

I adopted a tiny black kitten from on of our local shelters, her name is Penelope and she is awesome! She has so much personality, and spunk. She can be so loving at times.(on her terms) I call her my little black panther and she is beautiful!

I simply love animals and in particular the cats. I had a black female named Minù that unfortunaly passed away last year, I've found her on the streed and I loved her a lot. I couldn't bear to not have a cat for home so I took Mia, a beatiful and adorable cat......naturally black!!!! :))))))

My black cat, dutuu, is the alpha male of our cat pride and the most treasured member of our family. He is very much a baby panther and preferrs to be treated like one of our dogs. He protects our kittens and family members, but is the most affectionate cat I have ever met. Black kitty power!!,
