The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Black Cat

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

Unfortunately, the truth is kinda scary, too: Year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. In fact, black animals in general take more time to find homes, says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the Adoption Center.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

I have a black cat and so does my mom. My mom's cat Princess loves attention, she will cry and rub up against you and sit on your lap to keep you warm. My black cat Dakota was a stray cat he had a hard life. He's been neglected, abused, he's gotten attacked by other cats and dogs. And yet now he is the most beautiful cat I have ever met. He follows me around like a dog. He lays with me and sits with me. I love him soo much. Please give a black cat a chance sometimes you just need to take a leap of faith...Trust me this will be the best choice of your life.

We adopted our black cat a year and half ago. Originally we were just going to adopt 2 kittens, but I fell in love with their mom who was just a kitten herself at 8 months old. Mia has turned out to be one of the most loving cats I've ever known. She is definitely a people cat and loves to be around us. She sleeps with us at night so she can be close to us. Her fur looks like black velvet and she is absolutely beautiful. Please consider adopting a black kitty or cat because they make wonderful pets and companions.

My Black Cat is Named Blackie. Blackie Won The Everything at the Iowa State Fair in 2010. Blackie Won Best of the Best! Best Overall! And Two First Place Blue Ribbons. Blackie is Black & Very Very Beautiful!! All Black Cats Are Beautiful!!!! Adopt one or Two or Three They Would Look Marvolous Together!!!

we have a black cat lenora for about 6 years she likes to be petted she greets you at the door. we adopted her. she is all black. she was kept in a cage for a long time.untill we came along. she is 9 years old now. very loving cat and very friendly.

I love my black cat; a true miniature panther. Fierce and proud. I adopted him sight unseen when his owner died and an email went out at work. He is intense. Like no other cat I've known!

I have the pleasure of knowing two black cats, but only Midnight belongs to us. Goblin belongs to our neighbors across the street but he is a gorgeous cats and used to come visit us. We've had Midnight since she was a kitten, she had ridden all the way to my dad's job under one of his coworker's cars. My dad was the only one who could coax her out, I guess she knew that he had a soft spot for cats. So we end up with this itty bitty kitten with a rather sparse coat. She had some health problems at first but now she's a beautiful cat with a lush black coat and she's still pretty small despite being full grown. We sometimes call her our "parrot cat" because she'll get up on my dad's shoulders and just sit there, ocassionally grooming his hair.

I have a little black kitty named Jetta Kitty, he and his siblings were abandoned on the door step of my Vet. He was the only that hadn't been adopted. It was pure luck that I found him. I had just lost my Robo Kitty 3 days prior and something about this little guy reminded me of ROBO, I took him home and he is the most loving kitty loves to be where ever I am and loves to be HUGGED!!!! If I yell who wants a cookie Jetta is the first one to show up, but the cookies aren't kitty cookies they are for the dogs.

I adopted 2 kittens, one was all black with yellow eyes. So affectionate and loving! I had him for 14-1/2 years. His non-littermate brother was a Maine Coon Mix. I took in a stray, and they all got along. Now I have my mother's cat, an 18.2 black bundle of love. amd the former stray.

We have 3 rescued black cats!! They are AMAZING!! My husband and I love them and they are definitely GOOD LUCK!

THIS IS MY STORY BEFORE MY HAPPY DAY..... I've known love before, my family adopted me as a little kitten, I thought I was pretty cute and gave them all the love I had in my little soul, but one day all that changed.......I don't understand why they closed the door on me forever. I hung around awhile, but that door just never opened again, I don't know what I did wrong, I tried to be a good cat, I did my best, but that day changed my life forever. I got hungry. I hung out on a few porches just hoping someone would throw me a scrap of food, my little body was growing tired and thin and I'm really frightened outside at night. Then one amazing sunny day I found a really nice porch to hang out on. On this porch I was given a cozy bed to sleep in and three meals a day, I thought I had it made. But now the nights are getting colder and that nice lady would love to bring me in from the cold forever, but I understand she can't because of allergies. She loves me very much and tries to keep me warm with extra blankets at night. She even took me to see a veterinarian. He said I was a very good cat, I thought I was turning into an alley cat, but I heard him say...."this is no ordinary cat". He said I'm about 1 year old ( I didn't know that!!) He said he would tell some of his other patient's families about me and maybe I could finally find my forever family. Well, we haven't heard anything since that day and it's been quite a long time now. I'm still hanging out on that lovely back porch but I notice each night getting colder and colder and I'm SO SCARED of what the winter will bring. Will I make it or will my little body freeze and dwindle away? That nice lady who gives my 3 squares a day says that soon if no one comes through for me she has to take me to the shelter because she refuses to let me freeze. The only problem is that every single no-kill shelter out there and every single cat rescuse place out there does not have room for me. This nice lady is trying so hard to find me a good home, but I guess nobody wants me. The Animal Rescue League and the Humane Society would take me but they said I have a 50-50 chance of being destroyed because they can't keep me too long, especially when there are a lot of cute kittens that I'm sure would get adopted way before me and mainly because I am a black cat, nobody seems to want to adopt a black cat. Please, I do not want to go into a cage in a shelter until it's my day to die, I didn't commit any crimes, but I fear my time is running out. I'm SO SCARED. This is where my story ends....unless you can change it. Please if you or you know of anyone that I could give my love to, please contact this nice lady. I promise I will not take up much space, I don't need much to eat, I will greet you everyday with a purr of a song, I will be your best friend and cuddle on your lap. I'm SO SCARED! BUT MY STORY DOESN'T END HERE...... I WAS TAKEN TO A HOME FOR A TRIAL PERIOD TO SEE HOW THINGS WOULD WORK OUT, I TRIED TO BE THE BEST CAT I COULD AND LOOK WHAT HAPPENED.....THE FAMILY THAT ADOPTED WROTE BACK TO THAT NICE LADY ABOUT ME....AND HERE IS MY HAPPY ENDING, THIS LITTLE BLACK CAT HAD SOME BAD LUCK BUT IT SURE TURNED AROUND TO GOOD LUCK....Please read on: Many successes and some long-range goals have been made. The cat loves his new home! He slept with me last night. He ate dinner last night and breakfast this morning. He used the litter box (yeah!) He purrs and wraps himself around my legs and was intensely interested in watching every move I made this morning brushing my teeth and shaving, etc. My wife loves the cat and thinks the cat is beautiful and is happy that he is so affectionate but she hasn't had much time with the cat as I have been hogging him to myself. We're still working on socializing the dog and cat together. Yesterday didn't go too well. Upon first meeting, the dog got too close and the cat scratched the dogs nose causing it to bleed. Needless to say, the dog is not too happy about the situation. We've done a lot of research and learned to be patient and take it slow. Right now the cat and I are sleeping in the man-cave while the wife and the dog are sleeping upstairs. During the day, the cat is enjoying our three-season room where we have big windows with large window sills for him to perch on and watch the activities outside the house and enjoy all of our indoor plants. I named him Max after the cat in the movie Hocus Pocus, then quickly realized the cat's name wasn't Max, it's Thackery Binx. I haven't decided if I want to keep the name Max or change it to Binx. At any rate, I'm not giving him back. I want to keep him. He's adorable and I instantly fell in love with him. We're gonna make it work. Thanks for adding the newest member to our family!

Great win-win story for all involved! Love spreads, thanks for taking a chance.

Hi! i loce cat´s all of them! i have now a little panther called Lucille, she's very smart, when she meow's almost say "mamma"!!! she´s a rescue kitty, noybody liked her because she's black, but now i think the great friends that they just lost just for not take her to their homes's, at last better, because she's is my friend now and she love's me! take a black cat to your home, you will never be sorry about that...just think, you will be a winner!

Well let me start off with, I had a Black cat named shadow for 15 years, she just passed 2 years ago and she was cremated and I have her ashes, Now for my Crazy kitty Scarlett. Scarlett is Completely Black with the exception of a very small white patch on her chest, funny thing is My Shadow who passed was marked the same way. When I got scarlett, it turns out my neighbor 4 doors away got her for his son to play with, well having NO knowledge of how to take care of a cat, You would think that would just be common sense, well anyway, I came home one day a little over a year ago and saw this cat that was like looking at a ghost outside my driveway, turns out my neighbor threw her out because he didn't realize they need a litter box, food, water, and some toys. so she had been outdoors for a couplke of months, well I was still grieving the loss of shadow and it was a very Hot time when she appeared. I started to feed her outside and then I proceeded to take the time and coax her into my house. I asked my neighbor if he cared considering he trew her out, of course he didn't. Well after about a week of playing the step in step out of the house she decided she wanted to give it a shot, now mind you I already had a dog and another cat at this time. Well at first she would Bolt out the door whenever she could and then she would come back. Anyway the point of my story is that she is a Very Loving, Affectionate, and entertaining kitty, She is definitely a part of our family and she no longer wants to go out, Gee I wonder if it could be that she is Spoiled rotten like my other Crazy cat, She always has a warm place to sleep and Play, and she just loves being held and rubbed and loved in anyway possible, it is now to the point of when she does not see anyone or my other cat in Very visible places She Cries and Meows because she is lonely I guess and wants to know that she is not alone. I Honestly can say that of all the animals I have every had or came into contact with in my life (Cats), My 2 Cats that I have owned the one who has passed and the one I have now, and even other black cats I have dealt with it seems to me that Black Cats have a Softer more affectionate loving and Snuggling side that I have not seen in alot of other animals. I love Black Cats because they truly are all so different but yet so alike also that I am amazed that People associate them with Evil and the Occult and even Cults in general. Thay are such wonderful animals, I would recommend that anyone who wants to own a cat, should definitely not rule out a Black one. When you go to a shelter to check out cats or even dogs, Mingle with a few of them in colors and Black ones and I would be willing to bet that a lot more Black ones would be adopted.

I would get that kitty any day! but I can't

We have a black cat at home by the name of Bonzai who is an extremely mellow boy & very affectionate, except with other cats. He loves being brushed & playing with his feather toy. Even though we have a parakeet, he has never bothered him & will even sleep in the same room with our bird.I think black cats are really beautiful

We have 4 black kitties...Munkie and Snugglie, brother and sister, came from a feral mommy and have had them since the day they were born. Bonez and Harley also came from a feral mommy, were abandoned and they are brothers. They all act and think like dogs! They come when I call them and they are so lovable. We love our panthers! We also have 2 other cats, 2 dogs, 2 ferretts and fish. They were all abandoned at some point...couldn't imagine them not with us!

My {Black Furry Friend / Best friend forever} George happens to be a black cat I've had him for around 8 years, he's always been there for me and I couldn't ask for a better pet, very loving, always seems to know when I need a friend to talk to and gives the best hugs, asnd keeeps me warm at night. I Love you George My BFF

We had a black cat, Sylvester, actually our first cat, and we found him to be a real sweetie...of course we DID call him "Black Bart", and he WAS fond of sitting on the stairs to our second floor and bat at my husband's legs...but we have always been partial to black cats!

We had a black cat named Simon when I was in high school. He was the most loving cat we ever had and I still miss him to this day!

I've own different color cats but my black cats i have to say have been the most special ones. One of my black cats his name is muchacho is the most affectionate cats I've ever met. He is incredible smart. He learned to use the bathroom by himself one day my mom saw and heard him go and no one believed her. Then one by one we all got the chance to see him go. Now its an everyday occurance, he waits for his turn to use the bathroom. He is so special, and a big part of our family. He likes to play outside and everyday around tensame time he asks to go outside just to wait and say hi to my father and comes in carried by him. I love him so much. Please consider adopting a black cat they are the most affectionate a pet can get.

When my son was about 2.5 he still wasn't talking (we later found out he has autism) we had lost our cat to old age about 6 months prior and were discussing getting a new pet. We went to the shelter and as we walked through the cat area, this little black cat meowed at him. We went to look at the dogs because that is what we thought we wanted, but the barking was too much for our son, so I took him back to look at the cats again. The same cat meowed at him again. There was no dogs worth even trying with him so we started looking at cats. This little black cat just kept stairing at him, could care less about me or hubby. We decided that if she was that focused on him, and he was at least willing to look at her, then it was a good match. A week later he was babbling at the kitty. She is our little service cat. Even though she has no training, she was able to connect to him to the point he started making progress in speach. She is getting older now and has some white on her neck and chin, but she is still the black superstar we adopted for him!

I have 2 black kitties myself. Here is a the story of how i got them. Black kitty #1 (ziggy) This starts out sad and not about ziggy but my first cat Named D/C. I had to have my kitty of 12 years put to sleep on easter sunday 2008 (i still miss him so). Any way so i took him to get him creamated and i was very sad. So when the shelter called me to come pick up his ashes something told me to go look at the kitties up for adoption so i did. As i was wandering around there were lots of kitties playing but none that really paid much attention to me, to busy playing i guess. So i went into this room with cages in it and started looking at more kitties. Got to this cage in a corner and there was this black kitty who was very interested in me rubbing on the bars of his cage and sticking his paw out through the bars. SO i asked to see him and we wandered around inside the shelter for awhile and then i signed an application to adopt him. 4 days later i came to take him home. I beleive that my other cats spirit went around and checked out the other kitties and told him to be friendly when i came by and he will take you home. Black cat #2 (Lucky) It was in june or july of 2009 i was driving on a main state highway heading to my house. And just before i crossed a bridge there was a black kitty laying in the road about 1 foot over the white line in the traffic lane. I could not stop safely then so i went across the brdage turned around and came back. As i went by i looked in the mirror and thought i saw his tail move. When i got back across the bridge and turned around agian and pulled up just before where he was laying. Got out and picked him up and he was still alive. I went to the house across the street to ask if it was their cat and the lady said no but the cat had been hanging aroung the place for about 6 months. So i told the lady that since he was injured i would take him to my vet which was about 40 miles from where i found him. Got him to the vet and they thought the vet was not in and would not be back for some time. They tried to call him on his cell phone but got no answer. The vet tech asked me why i did not take him to a closer vet and i said because you are my vet. Then the vets daughters came and the tech asked where is your father and he was up at their house. And typical kids when the vet tech told them to go get thim they wnated to know why and she said to them just go get him this kitty is hurt bad. And he come down and the put an iv in first thing did some xrays and found out he had a broken pelvis. And he had numerous cuts and scratches on his nose , his ears and his butt had a cut on it. So they said he would live so i said ok treat him. As i pulled out of the vets office on my way home the car broke down and i had to call a tow truck. THat was $130 plus almost $300 for the kitties treatment. ANd after that it took me from that ime in 2009 until jsut a few monhts ago to actaully get the car totally fixed So that is my black kitties stories. And by now i am sure you know why i named black kitty number 2 lucky. I also have a 3rd kitty A/C a tiger cat who is now 13 years old and i have had him since he was a 5 week old kitten. He was my first kittys pal they loved each other very much and he still misses D/C as much as i do. I love all my kitties very much and as i am single they are everything to me. Ziggy is black with a white spot on his chest and his belly. Lucky is all black with a few sparse white hairs. A/c the tiger kitty is gray striped tiger with brown highlights. number 2 lucky. So all my kitties have been rescues except ziggy he came from The Heart of The Catskills Humane Society in Delhi NY. Hope you enjoy my stories.

On the same strech of road where i found lucky, just before hurricane sandy. I found another black and white kitty who had been hit by a car unfortunatly him/her had passed on already. And this kitty looked well taken car of so i am sure it has an owner. I posted a lost and found ad on craigs list but no answers so far. SO the day before the storm actually hit i took this poor kitty and buried him/her. One thing in particuler about this that aggravates me is that with lucky the owner never looked for him and i do not beleive that the owner of this other cat has looked for him/her either. If you are going to adopt a kitty please remember you have made a lifetime committment to that kitty and that includes lookng for him/her if they get lost or hurt.

I live in the wonderful city of Salem, MA. We just love our black cats here! They are the gods and goddesses of our lives. I did have a wonderful black kitty named Sweetie Pie. Got her at 9 months old and had her nearly 14 years (had to let her go this summer). Now she's with all the other wonderful black kitties that have passed on. What I loved the most about her were her head butts. I realized that they meant "I own you, momma!" and I just loved that. Sweetie would give me a head butt or 2 in the morning and before bed. I would sometimes give them back to her to let her know she was mine too. It's cool to know that we had that connection and I really miss that. I hope that when I'm ready to get back on the horse (so to speak), I'll go with another black kitty. They ROCK!

I LOVE the fact you live in Salem, MA where, no doubt, a lot of the destructive witch/black cat myths originated. More power to the black cats of Salem!

My black cat, Oscar, is sweet, smart and gentle. He brings love and happiness into my life every day! His fur is shiny and silky. He is truly gorgeous!!!!!

Hi folks! I am a witch, who practices the religion of Wicca. I love nature and revere Mother Goddess and Father God. Unfortunately, there have been really sick individuals who have claimed to be witches, druids, or pagan and abuse animals! These weirdos have nothing to do with these ancient, peaceful religions. Sickos come in all forms and it's good to keep our kitties safe. Not only that, but cats who roam outdoors are more likely to be hit by a car, ingest poison, get into fights, or get lost! I am honored to have been the caretaker of many wonderful animals, including several black cats. The last of my black cats to "go Home" was Bonsai. He was a coal-black Angora mix who took care of other animals and people as if it were his duty. Every evening, he helped us check the house for intruders, dutifully walking through each spare room and checking under beds. He was a treasure, and not a day goes by that I don't miss him. So, next time you hear about witches who abuse animals, please remember that no one who seriously practices Wicca, Druidism, Shamanism, or any similar faith would ever intentionally hurt one of these precious creatures. We don't ride brooms or worship the devil, but I'd take a broom to their backside!!

Love your post! It's important to clarify that real witches do not abuse animals. Like black cats, those of the Wiccan persuasion have suffered a bad rap for centuries. I have found the witches I have met to be among the kindest, gentlest, and most open-minded of people. More power, as they say, to you all...

I think it took a lot of courage for you to be so upfront and honest. Although I do not follow the Wicca traditions,I respect anyone else's believe as long as they are not negative/destructive. Here's to black cat power!

I thought of all the strays that could wander into our yard looking for a forever home, a BLACK kitten how boring . But i couldn t have been further from the soon to be reality. George as we refer to him is an amazing lovable easy going gets along with all of are other animals(too many to list..lizards, dogs pony goats, ect .) and he has grown into a very sleek and handsome panther who never sleeps alone , kinda pet. And this note speaks volumes as I have always considered myself a DOG person ...that is until George showed up that Sunday Morning under the rabbit hutches.

We have a Beautiful solid black cat named Silky-Sue. She is so soft and her fur is so shiny and very soft. She is very affectionate and loves to reach up with her long black arms to give you a smear on your lips. That is her way of kissing. WE lover her very much and are so glad to have her in our home.

We had a long haired black cat named Luna. She found a forever home with us. She once was a street cat and a mom before she came to live with us. She was very good with ALL of our cats and would often mother other kittens we took in and was good with my daughter's small dog. We miss her very much; she passed away this year with cancer. Black cats deserve a forever home like all the other cats who need homes.

My ALL BLACK kitty - Redford - was a part of my life for 18 years. He lived to be 21 [he was so old parts of him were turning grey]. He just showed up one day begging for food and we found out a neighbor had thought about poisoning this stray "pest". Turned out to be the sweetest, most loving and gentle cat I've ever had. The next time I need a cat, I will go to a shelter/rescue organization and adopt the black cat most in need...

I love my 2 black kitties!! One is a boy and the other is a girl. The little boy is smooth coated and the little girl is fluffy. My little panthers love to be petted, especially the little boy one. He's such lovebug!!! He'll rub against my legs and sometimes my pants when I'm preparing their meals. The little girl is petite and she's a sweetheart:) I never thought I would own a black cat, let alone 2. Blacks cats are adorable and I don't believe in that superstition of black cats are bad luck. It's so stupid! Definetly go out and adopt a black kitty. They can be lovable just like an orange kitty.

My panther-boy Kramer is wonderful! He originally lived down the street but decided he wanted to move in with me, my husband and our two girl kitties. He's huge and beautiful, an adept hunter (20 mice so far) but patient and gentle, and so grateful for his home with us. Black cats rule!

I am a foster guardian of a wonderful short-haired black cat. She has been with me for more than a year. The cat rescue organization I volunteer with moves their black and black and white cats for about 1 1/2 months during the month of October to foster homes for protection. She fits in perfectly with the other 2 foster cats and my two cats. She is an alpha cat; and she has confiscated Riley's cat bedding to personalize her room. I removed it from her personally decorated room and returned it to Riley's room. She brought it back to her room so I decided to let her keep it there. I believe she is in training to replace the current "cat burglar" in Northern California! I have seen her drag my rather large stuffed dog and its' puppy with her teeth into her room. She has personally decorated her room with colored marbles from my master bathroom and other items from other rooms in my house. She has made me laugh on numerous occasions! She is a perfect fit with the rest of my "crew"! She is definitely part of my extended family of cats!

If you can train her to bring you your slippers, tv remote or a tissue, I'm sure you will find her a home! Thanks for sharing your home with her!

I have a black cat named Beck, and he is so sweet. He doesn't really get into as much trouble as my Korat, Mike my other cat, who always seems to find a way to get into trouble.

I will be having my initiation as a Witch this November 16. Witches, are Pagans, and as a Pagan I can say this about our furry black-furred friends and companions; A witch adopting a black cat--the LAST thing on her mind is sacrificing the cat. EVER. Many people have confused Satanism with Witches and Paganism. And even Satanists are loathe to harm black cats. The problem arises from drug-taking fools who label themselves 'satanists' and are just plain stupid and cruel, lusting for power because of their wasted lives. The few Satanists I know--harming their black cats would NOT end well for the person who did so. I'm quite serious. Cats are beloved of Bast, one of our most important Goddesses, and as is mentioned, black cats are often seen in many cultures as good luck. Such is the same among Pagans, and especially Witches. We believe that black cats are just a little bit more sensitive to the world that other cats--but non-black cats are NO LESS LOVED or treasured. Thus, we count ourselves fortunate to have a black cat, and as has been mentioned, the real payoff is not in spells, magick, or such--but in love, snuggling, companionship and that they make one's house a home...as do all animal companions. May Bast watch over all your furry black companions, and all others as well, keeping them healthy and safe from harm.

We have four cats. One of our cats Teddy is solid black. He is the sweetest cat ever(a total teddy bear). He is the only one of our cats who sleeps with us in our bed at night. He is so loyal, loving and affectionate. I have also owned two other black cats in the past and both were so loving and sweet. I have a soft spot for black cats. They are the best!

I just really want to say that I am on the opposite end of what many people think about Black kitties. I actually choose and prefer black cats. I think they are the most beautiful and sweetest of all cats. I have had many cats throughout my 48 years, including 5 presently. My 3 black cats are the closest to me, Smokey, Tango and Merle. I can tell you they all have wonderful and unique personalities. I wish I could have many more, but they all deserve great care. So, I have what I can take care of. Truly, more often than not, the black kitties are the sweetest of cats. They make wonderful pets. Mine are like family.

My beautiful black cat has been a part of my family for the past 13 years (that's exactly half the time I've been alive!). He's been nothing but a great pet and a wonderful comfort even through really difficult times. Black cat myths are just that: myths. Adopt a black cat, I can guarantee they're as loving and awesome as any other kitty deserving of a good home.

I've had 3 black cats over the years and they are soo loving and mine all loved to cuddle more than any of my other cats! They also are very loyal and excited to see you when you've been gone fornany amount of time. I recommend black cats to everyone!! Plus their eyes look so breathtaking in the sunlight! PLEASE ADOPT A BLACK CAT!!!!!

Ricky our black cat is lovable and likes to play with our other kitty Austin. Ricky is sitting with me as I type this message. So happy we rescued Ricky, he's a wonderful black kitty.

i have 10 cats in my home, all spayed and neuterd,3 of them are black, all were rescued from my job and my backyard, all but one who thinks she is the queen of everything, are so loving and apriciative but even ashley, the queen is a sweetheart, the oldest black one, sobie is such a romeo,so calm and so loving and such a protector of me,there isnt anything i wouldnt do for them, mine got a second chance at a good life,i hope others will do the same and adopt or rescue a cat or two,the rewards are so worth it,spay or neuter and keep them indoors were they will all be safe and live a good life.

I'm on Long Island and my family and I are fostering a medium long haired, black female kitten, named Alice, who is now 6 months old. My daughter, who is a volunteer firefighter rescued Alice and two of her siblings, who were born to a feral, black mommy cat, when they were just 2 months old. Charlie and Amelia are also medium long haired, but they are gray and were adopted together at least two months ago. Alice is a little scaredy-cat, but she's sweet and she actually plays "fetch" with crinkled up peanut M&M wrappers! We love her, but we can't keep her because my husband is severely allergic to adult cats. We would love to find her a loving home.

I owned several all black cat they are smart the one I have now chirps when he wants food water and when you talk to him

I have the most wonderful black male cat named ChiChi I adopted from my Veterinarian. He had been hit by a car and had a broken pelvis which the vets repaird. He just loves everyone, gives head butt kisses and purrs loudly when you pet him. He thinks everyone that visits is there to see him.

I rescued three black kittens from our feral cat, Lilliput. Still the gray kitten escapes time after time, but we will get him and have him neutered and ear clipped like we did Lilliput. But, we caught the three "ninja sisters' went through months of gentle and gradual taming, loving and spaying. Shots for all, and collars to identify the Ninja Sisters. ( they take them off all the time). I never had a black cat. These are incredibly the softest cats ever, shiny like polished anthracite , most beautiful eyes of yellow. They now are part of our animal family, Wicket Fuzzy Pants, long-hair muted Calico, only two and was Queen of house, now looks over them as Mom of the house. Rascal the Jack Russell, likes their cat food, toys, but not them just yet. We called them Ninja Sisters because of their sleek body suits, sharp weapons on their paws, and when we tried to transfer them from the trap to large cage/crate, all legs went out and lashed in every way at us.. like ninjas. 6 months later.. sweeties, I just can't think what would happen to these girls if we did not bring them inside to live with us.

A few years ago right before Halloween, a black stray began hanging around. Afraid for him, we trapped him in a racoon cage and brought him in. Of all our cats, he is the most affectionate, intelligent and comical. Life would be boring without him. Halloween turned out to be very lucky for us for bring us Dino!
