The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Black Cat

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

Unfortunately, the truth is kinda scary, too: Year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. In fact, black animals in general take more time to find homes, says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the Adoption Center.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

We adopted Nala from The Buddy Foundation in Arlington Heights, IL when she was about 4 months old. Out of our 4 adopted pets (2 cats & 2 dogs) she is the sweetest, most gentle, loving one! She loves the dogs and always finds a way to cuddle with them! She looks like a black panther with big, bright green eyes! Always consider a black cat or dog to adopt....they are the sweetest!

I have 4 black cats and they are my lucky charm....They have such deep green eyes. Its a shame no one wants them. Its all about looks. Everyone likes different color cats. They think black are boring....NOT!!!!

We have two black cats, Licorice and Satch. Licorice is a fierce little princess of 17 yrs. and Satch, who is awesome and athletic just like his namesake, Satchel Paige.

I have a black/gray cat named Snooky. He was only 2 months old when my sister-in-law gave him to me. This little guy is now 9 years old. When he was a kitten, the person who had him abused him and my sister-in-law's brother saw this and went over to his house which was across the street. He grabbed him by his neckcollar and said some not to mention words to this other person. Anyways, he took the kitten from him and reported the guy to animal abuse. The person didn't care that he took the kitten, cause he said he didn't want him and wanted him to come outside and just leave! Well, needless to say this cat, my snooky, is very smart! He will open the mail door we have on the wall and scoop the mail on the table for us(that is if it's able for him). He doesn't like my husband to smoke, so he takes his cigarettes from his lips before it lits it and stomp on the floor with it, whereas it is crushed. He also is a good protector of us. People are more afraid of Snooky because of his growl(which is stronger than my dog, Gina). He loves to play with his toys and go on the treehouse we have for our cats. By the way, I have 2 other cats as well! They all get along, sometimes they have their squabbles, but for the most part, they play together. They all are so lovable and show affection. I wouldn't trade them for all the money in the world! Snooky looks after the other 2 and Gina, the dog, he grew up with her! Don't hesitate to adopt a black kitten/cat, cause they are beautiful cats to own and you won't be disappointed. I never was with Snooky, I am so glad my sister-in-law's brother took him from that miserable person. I thank God for bringing Snooky to us.

We have a black cat and feed a black feral cat as well. Both are male and are affectionate, gentle and very friendly. I was never afraid of black cats, but these 2 are proof positive that the fear is a myth.

My black kitty is named smoke. He is the most loving and loyal kitty I have ever had. He'd just love to be around doing his own thing when i'm out working in the yard or relax on my lap when I'm doing the same. When I call his name, he would come running to be with me. He was never a pest, just loved to be around.

I have 2 black cats and they are the best cats I have ever had. Menace was 4 weeks old when I found her under my steps meowing, she is my cuddler. I adopted Mork when he was 6 months old because he talked alot. They have become very vocal best friends. Everyone should have a black cat they are awesome!

Some friends of ours found a tiny black kitten a few years ago--she was sitting all alone under a tree, crying her little heart out. They brought her to us, since they couldn't have pets at their place and we've had experience raising orphan kittens. Little Midnight is still with us, though she's grown into a sleek black-velvet cat with gorgeous green eyes. And she has more than one name, too: a little friend of ours calls her "Ni'Ni" (the closest he can come to saying Midnight), and I call her "Minuit Fantastique" when I speak French to her--"Fantastic Midnight" (she likes my speaking French to her for some reason!) She is a darling!

I got my first cat when I was ten years old. When I went to the shelter to adopt I was all set in that I wanted a little orange boy, but that all change when I saw Sabrina. She was the only black kitty and the only kitty that wasn't asleep.she stole our hearts. For 11 years she made our family very happy. She would fetch for us and was always showing her love for our family. Sadly she passed away two most shy of her 12th birthday. She was my first love and will always be missed. But I know I made the best choice when we brought her home.

Izzy my black cat was a rescue of my retail customer. When she told me she could not keep her due to her health, she started to cry! I went on my next day off & adopted her @ the Islip Shelter. Izzy is a love & loves me!!! All are animals are......"THEY" are a gift from GOD!

My black cat (with green eyes) has been with me for 16 years. he is loyal, mostly well mannered and very loving. The sad thing is he loves the 2 chihuahuas, but they mostly snub him. I believe he thinks he IS a dog. LoL.

When my daughter was away at college she adopted 4 cats two of them were black. When she graduated they moved from Rhode Island to North Dakota. Their new landloard told them they could have only one cat and their dog. So they left 2 cats with me and took the 2 black cats. She said the the landloard would never know they have more than one because they both look the same, it worked he never knew and when they found a place that would let them all live, she flew back to New Jersey and took the other 2. So get 2 no one will ever know.

I have a BIG all-black short-haired male cat.....he is a wonderful soul and love personified.......an angel from heaven. I can't believe in this day and age that there are people out there who STILL think black cats are bad luck......and they really ARE out there because I've talked to a couple of them.....what idiots. If anyone knew "my" big boy, they would be trying to steal him from me.......he is just a big old lovable can of ham who is so loving and not one mean bone in his body. I thank God for sending him my way as a stray at around 6 months old. "I" am truly blessed.

I have had several all black cats in the past 30 years (in addition to many others). They have been the most loving, affectionate and sweet-tempered cats I've ever had. Shame on anyone for allowing stereotypes to influence their actions for black cats. They deserve love, too!

We have 2 black kitties (and a black dog). We love them, one is a domestic short hair and one is a domestic medium hair. Our oldest one Fleur is very sweet, she even gives kisses! She and our other little gal are the best bug- catchers we've ever had- they especially like spiders and I hate spiders so I love when they pursue a creepy crawly! Tonks is our youngest and she is so spunky, she constantly entertains us with her antics- she is very playful, she just turned 1! We love all our black animals, I think they are the sweetest things around!

My first cat was a mostly black cat named Sylvester & he put up with all my toddler antics. Many years later I had a sweet boy named FaeLynx, who un- fortunately was lost just days before Halloween. I was never concerned about witches, but definitely concerned about mean children. We only had 2 years together, over a decade ago, but I miss him still. Now I am so lucky to have 2 beautiful black girls, Cerce & Oren. They are such joys & we've been to- gether for 12 & 8 years. I look forward to many more years together & would gladly share my home with any little black panther :)

I have taken in 5 black abandoned cats, two adults and three kittens. They are all now spayed and neutered and are wonderful house companions!

I founded and operate a cat rescue organization for 11 years now and this article is incorrect, stating black cats are not in danger for Halloween. Evil people exist in abundance, unfortunately, and they do seek out black cats for horrible rituals! Most shelters don't adopt out black cats in all of October, for this reason. Keep your cat inside, esp. around Halloween. And yes these cats are wonderful companions!

I have an all black kitty named Raven. She is so sweet and loving, she pets my face with her little paw. She likes to sleep curled up next to one of her siblings and follows me all around the house. Life just wouldn't be the same without any of them.

I rescued a black ferrel kitten & now she's 4. She has been one of the best cats I have ever had-love her to death:). I never worried about bad luck. I took in a baby that needed to have a home. That is what's important!!

I have a handsome, shiny and sleek black panther at home that rumbles like a freight train and loves to curl up on your lap. He is always stickig his nose into things (including my ear at 5:30 in the morning) and is so full of energy you just can't help but smile. I am so happy to have Shadow and wouldn't trade him for anything!

I have a black cat and she is the most mild tempered cat ever. I adopted her at 4 1/2 months old she and her brother were feral kittens that someone found and forstered. She is shy but very loving. Her name is Minnie and she loves to play and follow me everywhere. She loves to cuddle with my older cat and sleep with her. she sleeps everynite on top of me. I feed 2 other black cats that are very sweet also I never thought about adopting a black cat but I would do it again.

My all-black Norton was the sweetest, most-lovable, best-behaved, gorgeous creature in the world. He only wanted love and only gave love. I still miss him terribly.

I have a black cat with yellow eyes. He looks like Marissa. He does actually look like a panther. He was born on April Fools Day so he's 8 1/2 years young. He was given to me by my youngest son for Mother's Day. He's very friendly, queaks, acts like a dog, catches mice & is very lovable. He's the baby of our five cats. I call him my Halloween cat. I would adopt a black cat if I didn't have five cats already. My aunt also adopts black cats. There's just something about black cats that makes them very special to have around you.

My story starts when I heard a little meow at a green dumpster in Sylva NC. Underneath was a tiny black kitten. Well cuteie pie was coming home with me, as she would make a great companion for my Maine Coone sweetie. That was in June 1997. Olivia is still with me, sweet, loving, pretty, does "roly poly" with hand signal, and kisses you forever. Black cats are the best. They are so affectionate and will love you forever. Adopt, rescue, save a black cat and you will be loved forever. Black cats get a bad rep, we need to let people know they are wonderful felines, just like the other felines. I love cats, and dogs, and my dog is black too. They are awesome!

Color was never even a factor when adopting our kitty Raven. She has a great purrsonality and happens to have black fur.

my black cats name is Jack. AKA bunny cakes, sweet tart, and Mr. Fang. He is the most precious animal I've had the chance to adopt, and I grew up on a farm having lots of cats, dogs, horses, etc. Jack came into my life when I was 19, after purchasing a home when I was a soph. in college. There had recently been a death of a very dear person in my life. I went to walmart one evening and was looking at the flyers of adoptable animals when i heard his voice. I looked over, saw a box of kittens and quickly ran over and picked up the closest kitten. He was tiny, no more than 5 weeks old. He climbed up my shoulder took a seat on the bill of my visor. I just walked away with a huge smile. I had to bottle feed him for a few days cuz he wouldn't eat dry food and only a tiny bit of wet. We spent a lot of time together. He sleeps with me evry night and has to be everywhere I am. He is very vocal as well, which does get annoying sometimes. He was never around children growing up but I now live with my boyfriend and his 2 daughters who just love him so much because he's soo sweet. He's now just over 7 years old, struggled a little bit being a big kitty but is now at a healthy weight cuz he gets lots of exercise running up and down the stairs and I've learned to feed him what he needs, not what he begs for.. He has had issues with bladder stones since about 8 months old and has had 4 surgeries to remove. My vet is unsure that if he develops these stones again, he may not survive another surgery. I thought I was going to have to put him down a few months ago when we thought he hd them again. I was so devastated, it was hard to even leave to go to work. Turns out, he just had a minor infection that just needed a shot! My vet and staff have also been wonderful with jack. When I take him to get his claws trimmd they are very glad to see him for something normal. He is my baby and I. Love him soo much. He is an indoor kitty, but still sneaks out to try and eat grass. He's social as well and is not scared of anyone. He greets guests with a hop on their lap and he tries to hug them around their neck while giving kitty kisses. I hope I get to have many more years with the kitty who stole and repaired my heart

We adopted two barn cats ten years ago when our two older cats Lucky and Gabby passed on. Annie was a black , skinny scrawny little thing with the biggest ears. Pudge was a beautiful gray long haired kitten (an advertisemnt for a beautiful kitten). Annie is as sleek as a panther and loves to be held against by shoulder. A big cry baby. Pudgie is still a sweet conceited beautiful cat. They give us so much love.

When I was younger I had a black cat. So beautiful! Her hair was so shiny and smoothe. I named her Boo Boo kitty after Shirly's black stuffed animal cat on the show of Laverne and Shirly if anyone remembers them :) I loved my cat so much, she would fallow me everywhere and lay next to me. I miss her so much. I do want another black cat. Right now I have a tuxedo cat who's also sweet. I think she needs another cat to play with but I also have to think about my dog. My dog and cat get along great! They lay next to each other and my cat fallows our dog everywhere. Not sure what would happen with another cat. I have to think about it. But I love all cats!

We have a black cat named Mya, I think she is part Maine Coon because of how smooth her fur is until you reach her tail and its big and fluffy. Anyways she was taken in when her previous owner was forced to give her away, if we didn't take her she would have ended up at the shelter. It was a very good thing that we took her because she had a very bad ear mite infestation, the vet said any longer and could have died. But I can't blame the previous owner to much, she was given the cat w/out any previous knowledge and not an animal person, just kept the cat for her kids. Anyways Mya she is loving when she wants to be lol but I stil pick her up to give her a daily dose of hugs and kisses, even after she starts growling at me, she never tries to hurt you just tries to get away. She is very vocal when she's hungry lol especially if she knows we're getting a treat ready for her, it almost sounds like she's yelling at us to hurry up! I love my Mya, she's black and beautiful and very very soft.

A black cat came into out backyards 4 years ago and adoped by fiance and I. He has been in our home ever since he came into our yard. He is a very loving boy. He has feline aids and has so much love to give.

My black kitty Buddy is the love of my life. He is so handsome, chubby, and everyone just adores him. He's by far the most unique cat that I've ever had and I have had many. He gets along with my other three cats (even a kitten) and spends his day following me around, snoring, and eating. I just love him so much and can't imagine why anyone would be hesitant of a black cat. They are definitely missing out.

My kitty child Zen is just that a sweet loving mild tempered black kitten she is maine coon they call her coloring smoke because she has smokey tips on the ends of her hair but besides her beauty she is one of the sweetest kittens we have ever owned I have always owned black cats and think they are great

I have had several black cats in my life, all of them very special. Our current black cat, Julian, is one of the sweetest and friendliest cats you'll ever meet. Black cats tend to be laid back, intelligent, and super friendly. Julian is all of these. My mother-in-law ONLY adopts black cats! That's how crazy she is about these wonderful kitties.

My boyfriend and I just bought our first house and our first action after getting settled in was to go to the shelter and adopt some kittens. I started looking at shelter pets online and fell in love with the story of a little black kitten named Geezer. he had little sporadic white hairs that popped out making him look just like an old man and I couldn't resist. By the time I inquired about Geezer, he had been adopted but the foster parent informed me that his little brother, Gizmo looked just like him and was waiting to find a home. I said yes immediately! And when I went to the shelter, I knew I had to adopt a friend for Gizmo. I went to the back room with my nieces and mom to see who else I could bring home. There were a ton of kittens of all sizes and colors in those little cages. And as we were interacting with all of them, two little black kitties kept playfully pawing at us through the bars. I asked to see one and was overwhelmed with how affectionate and playful he was. He climbed right onto my shoulder and stayed there as if to say "Okay, I'm ready, we can go now Mom." He just stole my heart. But his little brother was looking at us and started meowing too. I looked at my mom and it was clear she had the same thought, he's got to come home too. Pharoh and Gizmo are now comfortably ruling my household and Pharoh's brother Sphynx has given my mom's older black cat, Pepper, a run for his money for house rule. These cats bring a love and warmth to your heart. It's as if they know they've been passed over time and again and finally someone has seen them for the loving beautiful animals they are and they will never let you forget how grateful they are that you chose them to be a part of the family. Black cats are God's precious gift and I know my home would never be complete without their love in our lives.

A few weeks after I lost my darling kitty to a brain tumor I began looking at a shelter's site for kitties. I saw the most beautiful and the most angry looking cat I have ever seen. She was snarling in all three of her adoption photos. She was hiding in her box and all I could see were golden eyes and fangs along with long black whiskers. I thought about her for a few days before my Mom decided it was time for me to stop being so sad and adopt a new sweetie. I sent her the pic of "snarls" as I called her and told her that was the one for me. My mom went to see her at the shelter about 4o miles away. It took her another hour to finally find her. There she was hiding in her box. She was not eating or drinking and was too afraid of the other cats to leave her box for anything other than the litter tray. My mom placed her hand in the box and almost got her out of it. She kept trying for another 20 minutes knowing that I was so sad after fighting so hard against a brain tumor with my last cat and that something spoke to me about this little girl. After two hours of trying, the most beautiful black cat with silver shine came out of her box. She had extra toes on all four feet and amazing golden eyes. My mom said another cat walked near her which caused the black beauty to chomp on my mom's hand. With that my mom said it was official. The chomp was the seal of approval. She drove home with the little gem and held her on my couch for three hours while I finished up at work. I was in love. The second I saw her. She looked at me and ran. She was nervous. I opened the door to my bedroom and she jumped on the bed and purred. She was so happy to have a home. She settled in quickly and she is now my best friend. It has almost been a year together. I will be honest, I never thought I would ever have a black cat. Just never something I considered or really thought of. I just knew that when the time was right, the right cat would find me. Color didn't matter. I named her Gemma and she is the most perfect angel.

I adopted a black kitten who was a stray. She was near the front of the apartment complex I lived at. At first, I wasn't going to adopt her because where I was going to rent only allow two cats. I talked to many friends who said that if I take it to one agency, they will put her to sleep. One year later, Mya is a joy and I'm thrilled beyond words that I took her home with me. I think the black cat adoption story is a myth.

I took in a tiny black kitten that was thrown from a car window. under 2bls spooky grew into my long slinky baby boy who loved to play outside and follow me to all over the yard. I would scoop him up in my arms and rock back and forth singing ooo baby baby. my neighbors loved him too. Spooky only made it to his 1st birthday when his kidneys stopped working, the vet said it be because of the trama of being tossed from the car. Heart broken I went to the shelter a month later to find my black spunky Samantha aka Sammycat. 7yrs old and 17lbs i had to bring her home. She is so full of cattitude and loves her big belly rubbed. She makes me laugh and we show each other lots of love. Her thick black fur and big yellow eyes melt my heart. Black cats are the best!!

We adopted Jake for my Mom who is living withus, but he has bonded with everyone including the two large dogs. His blackness is beautiful and with his yellow eyes we sometimes call him Headlights. He is a love. you would never be sorry.

Hello all, I adopted my black cat (David) about 1.5 years ago, and I am super happy with him. He has even gain the love of my mom who hates pets and was against me in the adoption. But, I managed to persuade her, and so did my lovable David. He was actually a collared cat, but the phone number didn't work and the microship wasn't registered. I couldn't bare to leave him out there, so we took him in. Black cats are extremely smart! I say this because David knows how to get what he wants. For example, he loves to go in the bathroom to play in the tub. But sometimes, we don't want him in there because he plays with the water and sometimes the toilet paper. So, we would close the door, but he always managed to play with the knob to get inside. Another time, his litter box wasn't cleaned and he went to wake up my parents (around there usually wake up time for work...but on a their off day), and communicated to my mom that he wanted it clean. And guess what? He got it! The same thing with going outside to play. He would brush up against my dad's leg and jump on him to give him hugs because he wants to go out. Once again, he gets it. Black cats are just that good! I don't care what other people say about black cats being bad luck. He is wonderful, and I hope other people will give them a chance. They are smart, gentle, lovable and fun to have. I say all that time that he's like my little black panther, especially when he's hiding among the plants in the house.

I adopted two black cats a little over a year ago and they are two of the best kitties We have ever had! Personable, well-behaved, but still crazy kitties at times; they are perfect and beautiful to look at!

I've had a few cats through the years but having Notte has been special. He's the sweetest most Lovlingly memorable cat I've ever known. It's especially great having a black cat because it keeps all of the idiots away who think black cats are bad luck!!

I have a black kitty named Charlie who I adopted last year. He is the most friendly, loving, outgoing, full of purrsonality kitty I've ever been owned by! My cat before him was also black with a great friendly easy going nature (he was a stray that showed up very sick in my yard and found his way into our home and hearts). So please, consider the blackies when you adopt! I specifically adopted a black cat this past time because they are so under-adopted.

I've had "Tar" for 12 years. He has always been very shy, but at about age 9, he just came out of his shell and became a "man". He is very loving and loves belly rubs.

My boy, Cubby, and I just celebrated our one year anniversary. It was just before Halloween last year that he found me taking a walk in my neighborhood and decided I was "the one". He was right. He is the sweetest, most affectionate cat; he follows me from room to room, sleeps at my desk when I'm working, and waits outside the bathroom for me. He uses many different voices to communicate and it's very funny. Really, he's the best. No one looking for a new feline friend should hesitate getting an all black kitty!

I've adoped three male black cats: Magic; Spike and Shay. I can't say that I set out to adopt a black cat, but once I did I just felt an affinity towards them. Magic & Spike have since died and I have a new black cat, Shay, whom I adopted with his sister who is black & white. All of them have been sweet, loving and affectionate. I have to say I called Spike the love of my life because he was like "an old soul" whom I adored. It's sad to think these cats linger in shelters just because they are black. I encourage everyone who is thinking of adopting to purposely adopt a black cat, knowing that they wait the longest!

My little guy is 4 years old. I got him when he was just a kitten after my previous kitten died in a horrific accident. and Let me tell you, he may have black fur but his yellow eyes light up my world. Thats why i named him Luno, meaning moon in spanish. Technically it would be Luna but hes a boy so. He was the light in the darkness id just been through. He still helps me to this day. And he gives the best kisses. A myth is just what it is, a myth. It means nothing. Black cats are special, and they need as much love as any other kitten in the world. Dont judge a book by its cover right?

Black cats are just the same like every other cat. I have a 5 n half black kitty name JC. She's so adorable, playful, fun like every cat. Black cats also have such gorgeous eyes. Black kitties are beautiful and sweet. Just remember their like every cat, they just want to be loved to.

I have had 5 black kitties in the last ten years They were/are all unique in every way. They all have taught me life lessons that I will treasure forever. Unfortunately I only have my little black girl left - but I see her brothers in different things she does Even the one she wasn't directly related to ! I have several types of kitties, but black cats are very special to my heart Thank you for listening!!

I have two adorable black kitties at home! Black kitties LOOOVE tummy rubs! They are SUPER-AFFECTIONATE! They love to sleep with my arms around them and they love to be cradled like babies!
