The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Black Cat

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

Unfortunately, the truth is kinda scary, too: Year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. In fact, black animals in general take more time to find homes, says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the Adoption Center.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

Azabache was on Death Row at MDAS.... i was there to rescue a small, young black kitten that day, but something caught my attention.... inside a cage was a HUGE (18-20 pound) miniature Panther... all i could see was his bright, emerald green eyes, staring at me... Azabache was 3 years old, neautered and unfortunately had already been declawed by his previous owner.... i IMMEDIATELY told MDAS that I was taking him.... he is the KING of my house.. I've had him for 3 years.... and he is absolutely AMAZING!!!! I also rescued and adopted a Black Cat born without eyes, a black cat with weak back legs and a senior (13 year old) blind, deaf female black, long haired cat..... among them, i have orange tabbies and other mixes, but i am here to say BLACK CATS are BEAUTIFUL!!!! : )

I had two of the most special kitties that were black. My sweet little Ms. Beasley and wonderfully funny Pitzi! Both of my sweet black girls are no longer with us any more but they remain in a very special place in my heart. Both of them were strays that we took in and both of them left an indelable memory! Sweet Ms. Beasley never met anyone she did not love! Very talkative and a real snuggler! She was my girl and she would come like a dog when you called her. My lovely funny girl Pitzi was a true cut up! She loved to play ALL the time! And when no one would play with her she would amuse herself by chasing her own tail! They were wonderful cats that were black and beautiful! My sweet little panthers that wait for me in heaven!

I have adopted black cats for 20 yrs. My current baby Ebony I got 5 yrs ago when she was only 2 months old. Her owner gave away her siblings but no one wanted her because she was like her mom and only had a stump for a tail. She is one of the most loving cats I have ever had. I spoil her rotten. She loves to sleep under my arm at night after she kneads the blanket over me. She is my little love and I would protect her with all that I have.My friend Eddie calls her boo boo because she reminds him of halloween. He spoils her also. When he takes a glass of milk he calls her to come have her share before he has his. She has so many different vocal sounds that I know what she is asking for. Sometimes I say show momma and she leads me either to her food bowl or the front door for outside. I love her with all my heart

She started as a foster cat for a friend and has found a forever home with me. Matilde is a 15 lb. black cat with beautiful green/gold eyes and a real lovebug.

My sister and I both have a black cat They were both strays we took in They are both loving great cats mine thinks she is a dog. My sister and I are both very careful around October With all our animals especially the black cats. like it or not there are people who do use them Satanic rituals But that is even more reason for good people to give adopt a black and ensure it is safe and has a good home . They are great!!!!

Hello all - I have to say, this article rings true. I adopted my black kitty from a shelter in Rhode Island about five years ago and it was probably one of the best decisions I have ever made regarding a pet. Eddie is his name (I renamed him Eddie Haskell-for the little devil that he is) and I knew it was love at first sight when I saw his sweet little face. He was part of a litter with six other black kittens and everyone just passed them by. I remember that day quite well. The shelter employee was really trying to market these awesome dudes/dudettes - and I have to say, I am very glad she was routing for them. My Eddie just rocks, bottom line! He has brought me many laughs, some worries too, but most of all - continued joy, love and amazing companionship to my life (and I think he feels the same way!). We are lucky to have each other! Thanks for reading my story! Angela

I started out with one black cat-we adopted him from a shelter, he was abused from his previous home-and turned out to be the biggest LOVE imaginable and such a good protector of his Mama! Then another black kitty came to me from a friend who couldn't keep him. He was 20 pounds, and such a gentle giant! But unfortunately, he was only 6 years old when he got lymphoma and we tried treatments, but after a month, our hearts broke and he left us. Now, I have adopted a 3rd black kitty-who was left in a box on someones porch and she is an absolute sweetheart! I guess I just attract black cats, and I wouldn't want it any other way!

I adopted a gorgeous baby girl long hair black cat 7yrs ago. She is the most loving' gentle furbaby you will ever find. She plays and follows you around like a puppy. People are reallly missing out if they judge the Kitty by the color of their fur. I also had 2 black Great Danes. Such a myth that they are bad luck...it's actually the oppose. "Black Rocks"!!!

On Sept 16, I adopted a 6 yr old black cat after losing my 19 year old 6 weeks before. Zorro is so loving and well mannered, it was instant love the day I "interviewed" him, he put both arms around my neck and rubbed the side of my neck.

I adopted my little Sunspot two years ago from my local SPCA and have loved every minute she's been in my home. When I adopted her it had been almost a year since I lost my 18 year old Tigger to cancer. My other cat was missing a friend, he grew up with Tigger and didn't know life without another cat. So I went in search of the perfect new addition to my family. Sunspot was exactly what I was looking for. She was so sweet and her start in life was not great. Abandoned by her mom under a shed in someone's back yard, the children who lived there found her and because she was dirty decided she needed a bath; it was late winter so it was still very cold outside. But they washed her up in the wading pool in their yard. The parents brought her into the spca cold, malnourished and with a cough. The spca nursed her back to health and put her up for adoption. When I saw her and took her out of the cage, she curled up in my arms and snuggled her head against my neck and just took a deep breath and fell asleep. I was such a goner right then! She's two years old now and never ceases to bring joy into the house. Tearing around acting like a little clown and daredevil. "Tormenting" my 13 year old cat who just wants to sleep :) Every pet I've ever owned I've gotten from a shelter and I've never been disappointed. I love animals and my little black Sunspot is no exception!

I have 2 black cats and a black dog - they are awesome, very loving and extremely friendly. They get along with my dogs and the other cats. They love to come up and show you affection and very playful. I would never trade them in for anything or anyone.

I have a black cat with white paws (Mittens), that just turned one year old. She is so entertaining and fun to watch (Loves the cat tree)!! And she is one of the most affectionate cats I have ever had. I have 2 other cats, one gray and one yellow, and they play together all the time. Love Her!!

I adopted my all-black cat Max from a rescue society. He is the most wonderful, friendly cat you would meet! He is a great companion and is beautiful!! He was already spayed when I adopted hin at 11 months. What a precious gem of a cat. I would highly recommend black cats because they beautiful and make great pets!

I currently live with a wonderful black cat, Little Lucy Beane (LL Beane for short!) who has been with me for 18+ years. But my first black cat, whom I named Black Cat (B.C. for short, because he came to me in British Columbia where I lived at the time), actually picked me. I had been seeing him around the neighborhood. One day, he came into my living room and fell over sideways. I called my husband who came home from work early to bring this cat and me to the vet. I had already marveled at how he had picked me for help. He had a disease that kills cats -- feline peritonitis. We drained his stomach of almost two gallons of fluid over the next week. The vet put him on Vitamin C because there had been some literature of its effectiveness in this disease. Black Cat lived! And he was mine. But, really, I was his. He and I had a special bond, no matter what other cats lived with us. It was someting I sensed, that he was tied to me. That feeling never went away. To this day, my heart goes out to black cats. They have the most gorgeous eyes and souls. Little Lucy Beane is tenacious of life. I hope to have her with me for a good while through the strength of our feelings for each other. Black cats are all special!

I found my black cat when he was a few hours old and raised him with a bottle. We are still together after 18 years. In fact, he is sitting on my lap, purring , as I write this. He is a gorgeous, loving and intelligent family member. I wish he would stay with me forever.

I love black cats. I have had four black cats in my lifetime (since I was a teenager) and am now in my 60's. Annie, Archie, Kizzie and Sootie. My last black cat, Sootie, was 17 years old when he passed away from complications due to diabetes in 2009. I still miss him. I was looking for another one but am now renting and am only allowed one cat which I already have. Until now, I cannot think of a time that I have not had one in my household. Black cats are intelligent, (Archie used to fetch a ball and bring it back to me and would also come back home if you whistled for him). They are sweet-natured, friendly and very loving. I really miss having one in my life.

My Java Bean was left on my balcony by his mama! He was so little when I found him he thinks he's a person and in no way shape or form a cat!! He has an amazing personality and he loves to cuddle up next to me every chance he gets! He's a great cat and I would recommend to anyone and everyone GO BLACK when adopting you will not regret it!!

I adopted my black cat, Bear, when my father and his wife passed away over ten years ago. He is from Las Vegas so I refer to him as my Las Vegas Cool Cat. He is very affectionate and loving to all my animals. He has never met a cat or dog he didn't like. One of his nicknames is Mr. Mellow and nothing seems to faze him. His younger feline "sister" adores him and is always grooming him much to his delight. Everyone loves Bear!

my dad prefers to have a black cat but loves all kitties as do i. I am not a big fan of orange cats but have had one in the past. I find colour doesn't matter they are all adorable. But dad's black cat Bruce is a big 25lb suck.

We have 2 black cats that we rescued when their momma showed up in labor at a friend's house. She had 6 kitties. Two of them were black. My friends kept the momma and the 4 kittens and we kept the black ones, they are brother and sister. They are sooo sweet. The boy, who we've named Casanova is a real lover, he loves to sit on your lap and purrrrrrr all day while you scratch him behind his ears. His sister, Calypso, falls asleep in your arms, she'll lay in the fold. They love attention and make sure that every time you pass by them in the house, to let you know they're there so you can pet them. I would adopt Marissa in a heartbeat if I could, but I also have 2 more rescue cats and 3 shih-tzu dogs, one of them is in full coat, so busy busy. Black cats definitely deserve a chance though.

I have 2 tuxedo kitties and 3 black cats. Our most recent furry black family member showed up at our house in August as a tiny kitten. I have no idea where he came from, but I wondered whether someone culled him from a litter because he's black. Our black cats have brought us nothing but good luck and much, much love.

I have two black kitties, and they talk and chirp, and are very loving.

Wouldn't adopt anything but! They are the most wonderful, the sweetest and full of personality.

I have 2 black cats and my neighbor has 1. They are wonderful and special just like all pets. Their color doesn't matter except they are glossy and pretty. LOVE BLACK CATS!

We adopted our black cat, Lucky, from our local shelter two years ago. He was missing a leg, but that hasn't stopped him from being an active fun loving member of our family!! He loves to play with our dogs and is friendly and loves to cuddle!!

A friend found a tiny black kitten near her home, the minute I saw him I knew he needed my help. He was barely alive and barely a week old. I brought this little guy back to life. I was never a 'cat' person but somehow he changed my mind. His name is Angelo, he is 10 years old and he is our mini panther.... 17 lbs. Everyone that meets him instantly likes him, he has the biggest personality. He rules our house.... But it is because he is the sweetest boy! He loves to cuddle and has learned tricks like 'sit' and fetch. I've never believed the myths people say about black cats, they are absolutely beautiful creatures. They all deserve a good home.

I have 2 black cats, Aleister and Licorice-both the sweetest of all my animals!

We have a black cat that adopted us exactly one year ago. Being the owner of a Doxie and yellow lab, I was concerned when he started coming around. He kept hanging around and the dogs began to accept him. Today he is just as much a family member to us as the dogs are. I can't imagine him not being a member of the family now. He loves to be scratched and is such a loving cat. He sleeps and eats with the dogs, and greets people at the door as if he is the host. Don't let the color of the fur scare you, ours has brought nothing but good luck to us.

Coming from celtic Britain, Black Cats have always been seen as being very lucky; e.g. if you receive a charm braclet - for a gift - a black cat charm should be the first charm on the jewellery - I have found that if a black cat crosses my path - I'm usually in for a big, nice surprise and for me is a fortunate omen - all my life this has been the case...One of my most affectionate cats was a pure black male cat named sooty - he was a darling and folowwed me every where - like he was protecting me...They make good hunters if you need a hunter by the way;-) Enjoy the luck which will flow your way....

My niece had 2 sister kittens from a litter her cat had. She was planning to take them to a rescue group, but I became the rescuer. One is all black and one is tiger striped. My sister named the black one BatCat (I've chosen Onyx but that doesn't seem to be sticking...). BatCat and Primrose are so hysterically funny when they're playing and I never know what state my house will be in when I get home from work. They love to eat popcorn with me while I'm watching a movie, and like two little babies, they have to be near me when I'm sleeping or getting ready for work in the a.m. I'm so glad I took these two litle girls. They are so entertaining. Black cats rule!

Hi. I agree that black cats are sweet--I adopted one last September that was a stray to protect him, but not from witches! Witches, AKA Wiccans, DO NOT use animals in rituals or harm them in any way! The rule Wiccans live by is "And it harm none, do what ye will". They respect life would not sacrifice animals. I agree that there are people out there who are dangerous to cats, especially black cats around Halloween, but it is NOT Wiccans who are doing this!

My black cat Spooky has lived with me for 6 years. He's super friendly and loves people who come to vist. He's also a lover boy and loves to be kissed. I love hime to death and wouldn't part with him for anything. Black cats rule!!

My sweet black boy is the most affectionate, laid back of my two cats. He has had some medical problems this summer but is so patient when I have to medicate him. In the evening he head butts me from the back of the couch and sleeps curled up against my legs. Did I mention, he is also beautiful !!

I had a black cat given to me years ago she was so awesome excellent mouser and absolutely loved attention. I lost her last year in a tornado in Oklahoma but she had lived 14 wonderful years before that. If I ever get another it will be just like my Gracie...

First time ever having a black cat. Our male black cat "Sammy Lee" who s now 2 years/2 months old, became part of our family after our 6 year old Calico "Nala" had to be put to sleep due to illness. Out of the 5 mamma cats, black, 2 gray, yellow tabby, who had litters at the same time, Sammy won my heart when he snuggled into my folded arms. I was told he was a loner and stayed mostly to himself and would have to fight over food w/ 20 other kittens.. I plan on getting a black female kitty next. I LOVE black cats now. Please adopt & give black cats a chance in your heart & in your home. I'm sure you will enjoy them greatly. WE DO. :) :) :)

I was there when this little bundle of joy was adopted. I belive he knew where to go for love, because he ran stright to Cheryl. I knew when I seen her face he was going home her. I have to say I was vary pleased she chose Sammy Lee. He is a sweet vary pretty angel. That can make you lough and cry at the same.

I heard the old wives' tale about black cats being bad luck and therefore harder to adopt at shelters. So I immediately went to our local shelter and chose an all-black cat. He has the most beautiful green eyes and is the swetest cat ever!!! I then adopted a young black kitten who has gold eyes. They are just gorgeous!! And I now have 9 cats (3 black ones) and though I love them all dearly, the black ones are the best behaved and sweetest. Go to your shelter now and adopt a black cat/ktiten!!!! You won't be sorry!

As a cat lover when a year old (approximately) black cat appeared I started leaving food for him. One day I found him curled up next to my front door with puncture wounds on both sides of his body evidently from a dog. The vet shaved his body from his shoulder to his hips and sutured both sides. At first he was kept in a large cage on my covered deck since I had 2 indoor cats and he needed to be protected. Eventually, after his hair grew back, I brought him in the house. Occasionally he would go out for a few hours but came right back until one night. After searching the neighborhood I feared the worst. Much later the next morning he appeared with one leg obviously injured. After a vet specialist put a pin and 13!! screws in his back leg Spooky never set foot outside again and is the sweetest, easy-going, most loving purr-machine ever.

I have two gorgeous black cats at home. The first one (Michín) was found by my brother and his friends on a trash can along with the rest of the litter. He and his friends decided to rotate the kittens so that someone would take care of one of them every night. The night that my brother had to be in charge of the kitten I fell in love with him and offered to take care of it until it found a new home. We never found a home for him, we just couldn't part from such a cutie. This was the first cat I ever had and he completely changed my perception of cats. He has been with us for almost 10 years now and he is the prince of the house. He is very talkative, a bit shy, but still playful and sweet. I love seeing his gorgeous hair shine under the sunlight, he is long and elegant and I bet he thinks he is the fanciest cat in town. He is also a big friend of dogs, and used to sleep cuddled with my labrador until she passed away. Our second Black cat (Ahava, which means love in hebrew) followed my mother back home one day when she was walking our dog. He was just a tiny ball of fur, there was no way we could resist him. He is the chilled one of the family, never in a hurry, never nervous, always extremely cool and acting smooth. He has long hair, a round face and he is really fluffy so he looks like a little bear (I call him my bear-kitty). He is always ready for a pet, and when he's hungry he somehow signals for you to get a hold of his tail and guides you to his plate like on a leash. He is so smart and he lives up to the definition of his name. I had always been a dog person until I had cats. Now I thank god I don't have to choose sides, I love them both!

My husband and I have two black cats. A 6 year old female named Coco and a year old male named Bobby. Coco came from the local SPCA and was in the cage by herself. Bobby was adopted from Petco; he too was all alone. Our black kitties have brought us good luck! We love them more than anything in the world. Black cats are the best!

My black cat Budman stood out far and above all the other animals I have ever owned. There are not enough words in any language to describe him. He died in March 2012 at age 20. There is a hole in my heart that can never be filled.

I had a black cat years ago named Cleopatra. She moved into our yard and would not leave, so she was adopted by my family. She was very smart with a strong personality. Also, she was very loving and cuddly. She has gone to cat Heaven, but she is always missed and remembered. Cleopatra was kept safe inside days before and after Halloween, because some people were still suspicious of black cats.

I wouldn't care what color that he or she would be as long I love they for what and who they are.they are beautiful just they way there are amen

Gosh looks like a lot of people LOVE black cats..My 94 year old father recently lost his two calico cats, his greatest companions. I happened to have a wonderful (with a small amount of white) cat that I had taken in when it showed up in the middle of a very cold Michigan winte inspite of the fact that I already have 2 cats and a dog. "Radar" had been neutered and declawed when he showed up but NOBODY claimed him. Because he is a quiet, friendly, non aggressive critter, I decided to leave him with my Dad while I was on vacation...It was love at first visit, I have offered to take him home but Dad can't get over the companionship Radar provides. Radar settled in at Dad's without a hitch. I'm sure Dad would agree that there is nothing better than a Black Cat...

I adopted my black kitty from Richmond Animal Care and Control. Her name is Morticia - nickname "Ms. Adams". She is the most affectionate catand she is so beautiful with green eyes and a white beauty mark on her chest. She stands on her two back paws and asks for treats and sleeps on me while I watch TV. She also talks all the time. I couldn't have gotten a better friend:-) I hope more people decide to adopt blak kitties. They are very special animals.

A GOOD CAT DOESN'T WEAR A BAD COLOR

I have a blackie guy named Bagheera. He is named after Bagheera from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book (the Disney movie doesn't do him much just). In the book, we learn that Bagheera was born into a traveling circus. His mother didn't want him to live out his life in captivity, so one day when they were backed up into a jungle entrance and the timing was right, his mother lunged at their trainers, giving Bagheera a chance to escape. Bagheera had no one to show him the way of the jungle. Fast forward to Mowgli and the council of wolves debating to keep him or giving him up to Shaka Khan, Bagheera steps up in agreement to look after the human boy and teach him the ways of the Jungle. My Bagheera has been with me for 3 years now (!!). He is my best non-human friend, follows me around, and usually comes back upon hearing his name. Hes a big sissy-lala, but I like to believe he looks after me in his own way..

I work with a rescue and TNR group. Many of the cats we get are black and most are very friendly and sweet. I had a long haired wonderful black cat I called Colton for over a year. He was wonderful. He seldom shed and was quite a talkative charcter. Unfortunately he ran off after a house fire and, after much looking, I had to give up on finding him. I only hope someone found this wonderful young man and took him home. I think a totally black cat is just not as colorful to some people (they want colors and variations) and black is too plain. Another is the "fear factor", which is a sign of total ignorance. Black cats are just cats and each cat has a unique personality.

We have three beautiful black kitties in our family. They are sooooooooo wonderful! In the past we have had a tiger stripe beauty and a mostly white and grey Siamese beauty. All of our babies have been as precious as can be. The color of their fur should never matter. They all have a pink color skin no matter what color their fur is. I think it is a terrible to judge anyone because of their color skin or fur! Black cats are beautiful and elegant!

Her name was Samantha, and she lived to be just shy of 20. She was a petite beauty who never weighed over 6.5 pounds. She had a beautiful trail of fluff of a tail, and emerald eyes. Although she was given to me as a gift from a pet shop shortly after she was weaned. She loved to climb. Maintained her aloofness. Would never accept being pushed around by our more playfully aggressive male kitty. Would slap him if he misbehaved and then stand her ground. How we loved her! It broke my heart when we finally had to say goodbye to her. She walked on August 23, 2011, and rests in our back yard beneath decorative stones and silk flowers. I have dozens of stories about this unique little black beauty that will remain in my family's memories. We have 3 kitties now; but if I ever adopt another, it will most likely be another little panther girl (or boy...).
