The REAL Scary Truth about Black Cats

Black Cat

Have you heard the myth that black cats are unsafe in October, in part because witches may try to adopt them for rituals? We sure have. But guess what? Top ASPCA experts agree that it’s just not true.

Unfortunately, the truth is kinda scary, too: Year-round, black cats are the least likely to get adopted in shelters across the U.S. In fact, black animals in general take more time to find homes, says Gail Buchwald, Senior Vice President of the Adoption Center.

At the ASPCA, we LOVE black kitties. (Some of our friendliest cats, like Marissa, are black—yet Marissa has waited more than nine months to find a family. What’s up with that?)

Aside from the most important reason to adopt black kitties—that they really need extra help finding homes—here are a few reasons to take home one or two:

  • Their fur won’t show on your little black dress.
  • You can tell your kids you adopted a mini panther.
  • Black cats go with everything.
  • In most cultures, black cats are a sign of good luck.
  • You already know black cats are awesome—you have one at home! If you’ve got a great black kitty, tell us about him or her in the comments. You just might persuade someone else to give these felines a little extra attention.

Except for a tiny white spot under his chin, my old friend Ben was entirely black. Truly a miniture panther in appearance, we adopted Ben from Animal Humane when he was almost a year old. It wasn't easy convincing our 6 year old to adopt a full grown cat rather than a cute little kitten, but his sweetness won all our hearts. Ben taught me to keep my cats indoors, safe from cars, humans, other animals and feline diseases. Ben suffered 2 incidents of cruel human-caused damage and yet remained trusting, loving, friendly and engaged. He consistently demonstrated loyalty and gentleness. When he looked at me, the Love in his eyes was undeniable.

Our cat, Clyde, is solid black and is the coolest cat ever! He is about 10 years old now and was given to us by a freind who's barn cat had a litter. He is huge! He has long fluffy hair and is just the biggest most lovable baby ever. He likes to go outside but we make sure on Halloween night that we keep him inside. Im not sure if the stories are true about people stealing black cats at Halloween, but we are not taking any chances!

I have two solid black cats, one of which was abandoned at my vets office as a kitten with both hind legs broken. What made it all the sadder was the legs had been broken at different time, as the right one had already begun to set. People are just plain silly to attribute bad luck to a color. Both of mine are wonderful loving animals. However, I did notice that in areas where "questionable religious beliefs" are practiced, black cats tend to "disappear" around this time of year, so I've always kept mine inside.

We found a kitten 8 1/2 yrs ago. every time I got up off the couch she would hop up and sit where I was, I couldnt see her at night and I kept sitting on her. So I named her shadow, shes been my second best cat pet.

Our black cat is the most loving animal our home has ever had. From the day I found her and brought her home. She has made friends with our goats, to going into rabbit cages to clean the baby rabbits, yes the mom was ok with that! don't second guess an animal or people by the outside! Look within to see there true beauty!

I LOVE BLACK CATS. I live with 6 rescued cats and 4 are black. They are so full of fun and often behave like a dog. They love to roll over on my feet and get their bellies rubbed. They're super friendly and very affectionate and they love to clean each other's faces. Black cats also require less grooming because a quick rub with your hand down their backs often is all the combing they need. They shed much less than my two tabby cats. They can be a little chatty sometimes but they're great company.

My black kitty was found in the wheel well of a van where he had travelled about 10 miles before the van parked and he fell out. Friends who know I am a push over for rescues, called me and I rushed to take this small little boy to the vet. Miraculously he was not injured and in good health. He cuddled on my shoulder and hung on for dear life. Sooo...I named him Velcro! He joined my redhead cat, Peanut, my Dalmatian mix, Noodle, and my three pit bulls, Tommy, Sasha, and Alamo; all rescues. He loves to play and is always doing something to make me laugh. I have a full house of unconditional love! Who could ask for more?

My favorite cat of all time was Medea, a black cat I took home as a kitten from a nearby cat adoption center. I spent a morning playing with virtually every cat in the center, and Medea was the only one who was playful, spirited, affectionate, and never struggled or showed a claw when I picked her up and held her. She lived with me for 18 years, and I still miss her terribly.

We have two black kitties and love them to pieces. They both have very different personalities and don't always get along, but that's okay. We wouldn't give them up for anything. We have had quite a few black kitties and all of them have been great. We also have a dog and he loves them too, lol.

My Boris is sweet, smart & beautiful! I love black cats & believe nothing of those myths. They all deserve good loving homes!!!

I have a preference for black cats and dogs. They are beautiful (like patent leather!) and by far, the sweetest pets, in my experience. I adopted a black Border Collie/Lab from a local pound over 15 years ago, and he still thinks he's a young boy, and is the best dog EVER! He is smart beyond belief, lovable, friendly and cuddly, and still tries to heard the family at every opportunity. We also adopted a black kitten a couple months ago from the same shelter. He is the most affectionate kitty I have ever had; purrs like a motor boat, gives kisses and massages without fail, and loves to include himself in everything we do! He also makes a beautiful decorative accent (along with my antique glassware)!

I went to the Dallas SPCA looking to adopt a kitten after my tuxedo cat Oreo passed away. I went into the kitten room, sat on the floor and before I knew it a little black kitten had crawled into my lap, curled up and had fallen asleep. I think we both knew right then and there I would be his new human mama. Nine years later he's a happy, healthy and handsome little man named Ozzie. He's the sweetest most affection cat and at 15 lbs still likes to crawl into my lap and fall sleep. I thank my lucky stars everyday that he picked me.

Black cats are AWESOME, so much so that I've adopted 3. Spooks and Sabrina and Blossom. They are a joy to have around and I wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.

I have 12 solid black cats and they are prescious

I have a beautiful, sweet, loving black cat! She has been with me for 7 years and loves to kill the bugs in my house for me! She always meets me at the door when I come home and cozier up at night with me when I go to sleep. Whenever something is wrong or I don't feel well she knows and stays by my side! I love my little black cat!

I have a female blk kitten that was dropped off at my house. You could feel her backbone, she was so thin. My dogs cornered her in the pole shed and I had to put gloves on to catch her. All I saw was teeth and claws, she was so scared. I named her Love. She is the sweetest cat, but she will only let me pick her up and love her. She hides from strangers. She loves the dogs that cornered her now and runs with them morning and night to their kennels. Love has made a special place in my home and my heart.

My black cat is amazing. We found him outside and brought him in. The greatest cat I ever had. He's the most loving and affection cat ever. We call him lucky cause how everyone is says they're bad luck, but he's not he's lucky, he found a family that loves him day in and out. He's so smart its like having a baby. Lol

I have a black boy and a tabby girl, they're brother and sister and adorabe. they're both very smart and affectionate but the black boy is MUCH more playful than his sister. we have even taught him to play fetch whilst his sister will just sit and watch. He loves a cuddle, sometimes too much as he gets jealous when i "stroke" my ipad when typing on it.

My daughter begged me to adopt this black cat..she was homeless and well living on the streets...I already have an all white cat I told her she said please momma. So I gave in and we took her on home...Her name is Nala she is 2 years old and you would swear she was a dog...You can't say here kitty kitty. YOu have to call her by her name. She plays fetch with paper balls...If you ball up a piece of paper she is right there in front of you. She is 16 pounds and I love her with all I am...She Def has made an impact in this family! We all Love her so much!

I've had many black cats over the years and they have all been wonderful and full of personality. I currently have one little black kitty named Sunshine but I usually call her Sunny. She is the sweetest little love bug, she's kind of shy around other people but she is a darling girl. I wouldn't hesitate to get another black cat when I no longer have a full house:)

I have (2) black cats-Philla & Phoebe. I found them several years ago as kittens abandoned in a wooded area-hungry & frightened. I managed to catch them (after feeding them on the side of the road)and took them home. I was unable to find a home for them, and knowing their chances of getting adopted, I kept them as my pets. They are beautiful animals, shiny black coats and striking yellow eyes and are the same as any domestic short hair. Don't allow ancient superstitions to effect your decision on adopting-black is beautiful!

I have loved black cats all my life. Kali my current black cat, and is my protector. She came to us in a semi feral state and was a grumpy girl, until she was treated repeatedly with love and kindness and settled in. Now she tucks me in at night, literally pulling the covers around my shoulders and then snuggling there to protect me. If I am upset she is in my lap comforting me. I am blessed to have her. I have always thought that blackies have a better nature that most cats, though I have a tortie and a long hair too.

I got my black cat as a ferrel 8 week old from a woodpile. She was a little ball of hiss when she came to us and turned into the most loving little baby. She sleeps with me everynight. I am convinced that the woodpile was magic!

We have had 2 black cats. They were loving and smart and funny. If we ever get any more cats it will definitely be a black one...or 2. My daughters are allergic to dogs and cats so I am hoping they will one day grow out of that because I miss my cats :( Fee and Fattie lived till they were 15 and Anna lived till she was 19 1/2.

Black cats are wonderful pets, just like any other kitty. I specifically look to adopt black cats if there are any a available when I adopt. For the past 24 years I've had black or black & white kitties. They aren't bad luck just like walking under a ladder or breaking a mirror aren't bad luck- only silly superstitions!

While I have always had Siamese cats because of their dog-like dispositions, I rescued Zoey, a gorgeous black domestic shorthair about three years ago. Someone had boxed Zoey up and left the box by a trash dumpster in Chicago. Thankfully, her high pitched voice saved her from being compressed with the rest of the trash. Zoey is big, burly, beautiful and very funny. She always disguises herself by sitting on a black piece of furniture. She loves to go to work with me and is the perfect desk top accessory. I wouldn't trade her for all the tea in China.

I adopted Maddie from the local Humane Society 2 years ago come November. They told me when I adopted her that black cats were usually the last to be adopted. She is a real sweetie - she loves to lay across my arms belly up when I am on my laptop, plays fetch (she did this herself - I am sure that she thinks that she taught me) and is a great lap cat. And she knows what to do if field mice sneak in.

I adopted a black cat seven months ago, and he had been in the shelter for 10 months-since he was 10 weeks old! I can't believe no one scooped him up as a little kitten, but we sure are happy they didn't. He is the friendliest cat and loves to be the center of attention. Our friends and family are totally smitten with him- and so are we! We hate the black cat stigma, and we like to say that he is our LUCKY cat! (But really, we're the lucky ones to have him in our lives)

I am incredibly lucky to have found the most loving and wonderful black cat (or cat of any color for that matter!). He is playful and loving; he always greets me at the door when I come home; and he invariably curls up on top of my head every night to sleep. He's never far from my side, whether he is trying to climb in to the bathtub during shower time, curled up around my shoulders when I'm watching a movie, or on the keyboard when I'm trying to do my work. I couldn't ask for a more loving companion or a better friend. Please adopt a black cat.

Every black cat that I have ever known; have been the sweetest cats ever!!!

We had a black kitten named Barney who showed up at my husband's car shop one day. My husband was sitting on a stool working on brakes. Barney (named for "Deputy Barney Fife" of the Andy Griffith Show) promptly climbed up my husband's leg and perched himself on his shoulder. From that day on he went everywhere my husband went, back and forth to work and rode on his shoulder or sitting in the back windshield of the truck. He soon discovered that things were more interesting at home since we had two adult female cats with whom he could show his mischievous side. Barney was a loving member of our family for 12 years at which time he became very sick with a pancreas disease. My Mom was in her 80s-90s during this time, and Barney became "her boy", as she adored him. I can't begin to tell you how wonderful this all black kitty was. He had a human personality almost, and I nicknamed him my "little Huckleberry Finn", because he loved to go outside so much that I figured he must have an imaginary raft somewhere that he rode down the river (ha). We miss him to this very day and it's been over two years. Don't hesitate to take in a black cat. They are wonderful! You won't regret it.

One afternoon we were out back grilling and my husband spotted this tiny little black baby just over our fence. He was scared and hungry. I lured him with food and he began hanging out with us there and when we went in I showed him our pet door. He came in after a short time and spent the night in our basement rafters and was super loving. My husband started calling him Squirt and it stuck. We had him neutered and he is our baby. Loves to have his entire face and head scratched.

I've always had black cats. The truth about black cats is that they are a a vision of elegance. I had to put down my black kitty of 15 years and I miss her so much. She was a wonderful, lovable, intuitive and sweet companion. I felt so lonely without her. I since have adopted another 2 year black kitty who is a male and he is also wonderful, lovable and so sweet. I call him my gentle giant. When I met him, he immediately was so loving and sweet. Don't pass up adopting a black cat because they truly are awesome companions and very beautiful!

I rescued a black kitty years ago who was living on the streets. She became the best cat I ever owned. Even when I had to give her injections in her neck for kidney failure and hold her while the bag drip drip dripped, she laid still and calm, knowing I was helping her. She slept in the crook of my arm every night, while I held her back foot, which made me feel connected. She gave me the best kitty kisses too and nibbled my arm when whe wanted to show affection. After she passed at the age of 16, the first thing I did was go to the Humane Society and adopt another one. She has many similar traits...very smart, loving, and she comes when she's called as did my former black cat. I'll always own black cats, they are the best!

The myth is definitely not true. For one, witches don't sacrifice animals, that's a huge misconception. Secondly, black cats are just like other loving kitties and need good homes as well. I absolutely adore my black kitty, Spooky. He's a wonderful companion and very loving. I wouldn't trade him in for any other cat. :)

I am blessed with having 3 black cats. All were rescues that I took off of the streets. They are so loving and so smart. They are friendlier than my other cats. I wouldn't trade them for anything.

We have 2 black cats in our family. Both are very special to us. The oldest is Cletus and he came from a horrible pet store in the mall. We were not looking for a cat at the time, but we passed the windows and saw a kitten that was to tiny to be there. We went in and ask to see him. That poor kitten was almost starved to death! We paid the $25.00 and took him to the vet. There we learned that he was bearley 4 weeks old. He was put on antibiotics, a bottle, given his shots and sent home with us. We fell in love! He's been with us for 12 wonderful, joyful and loyal years! He is our baby. Jada was rescued off the streets as a little kitten. She was in our friends garage and would not let anyone touch her! She had been chased by all the neighborhood children trying to catch her, so she was terrified! I called my husband to help, he just walks up and picks her up. Jada has been his his cat since then. She is 6 years old now. Fiesty, playful, and full of spunk! We love both of our black cats very much and can not imagine our family with out them! By the way, I'm glad to report that the mall pet store has been shut down!

Twelve years ago, I adopted a black kitten. Pixie has been the sweetest, most affectionate cat I've ever known. She is also beautiful. I would advise anyone who loves cats to adopt a black one.

I adopted my black cat Dixie from a shelter, I had gone there looking for a friend for my cat Migo. I went there looking for a boy cat, and I am partial to red cats, but the lady convinced me to give her a try, she was right. Dixie is so smart that I always say I should put her in the movies and my husband and I could retire!

I adopted a black kitten about 8 years ago, (along with her companion). She pretty much adopted me. I went to the shelter to meet the kittens and she immediately jumped into my lap. I knew she was going home with me at that moment. The second night I had her, she curled up on my shoulder and fell asleep. She constantly purrs and, no pun intended, is my shadow. She is so friendly and has a very sweet disposition. I am so glad she picked me.

I own 3 black cats. They all came as strays to my home! I am so glad that I "adopted" them. They are very loving & sweet!!!

We have three black kitties, one found us and he's the smartest cat ive ever had. The other two were rescues because I knew Noone would take them in they are both black and blind . They are amazing cats..I'm forever hooked on black kitties now.

My husband and I adopted a black kitten, with gorgeous lime green eyes, in May 2011 and he has quite the personality! We already had 2 female cats so adding a male cat would make for an interesting change in the family dynamic. I always wanted a black and when I saw little Diego for adoption, I couldn't resist! Diego is so loving - he wants to sit in our laps while we are at the computer, he loves to lay on my chest when I'm relaxing on the couch and he happily joins me for afternoon naps on the weekend. He makes the coolest little noises and chirps - especially when we arrive home! He greets me with a kitty version of "hello!" after a long day at the office. He follows my husband around the house, cries out when he leaves and will even wait at the front door for him to return. We often warn our house guests that Diego likes to play "paw" under the bathroom door so don't be alarmed if you see his little black paws reaching in! It is so hilarious! I cannot imagine life with out Diego - he is one in a million! Black cats are AWESOME!

We rescued a black kitten 9 months ago and named her Loki, after the god of mischief. And boy does she live up to the name! She's full of energy and absolutely rules the other 2 cats & w dogs of the house. She's not a kitty who likes to be picked up & carrie--she likes te aloof--but when I sleep, suddenly she's 100% cuddle, at least as long as she thinks I'm asleep. If I move, she's Miss Aloof again! But when she is in the mood to be petted, you cannot refuse. She won't let you go until she's gotten all the petting she wants, there's no escape, she holds your arm and if you try to stop before she's done, out come the claws! It's so funny! She's got about a thousand nicknames, like the couch monster, the tiny mischief god, the sleek black menace, attack cuddler, master of the hounds,r, oh I could go on. She'll turn 1 in December. We're so glad to have her to keep us all on our toes!

I am currently the proud parent of 3 adorable black cats, Dora, Batman and Little B. Dora (step-mom) and the boys (brothers) have gotten along famously since they were introduced to each other 2 years ago. They are all rescues. Dora adopted the boys from the minute I brought them home and has kept them in their place ever since. They bring joy and laughter to me on a daily basis. Recently Little B had a kidney stone and had to be hospitalized, but Momma Cat was there to make him feel better when he came home. I have had black cats for over 30 years and would feel incomplete without one. I love it when they decide that I can share the bed with them at night.

We have a black cat, his name is Kozmo and we love him. We always try to adopt a black cat. There is just something about them we love. I will always have one :-)

Our first five cats who "adopted" us were all strays who had been thrown away and were all black. We adored them and felt incredibly lucky they found their way to our house. Our first lived to be nineteen years and four months, and it was like losing a child when she died. We currently have one black cat in the mix, and he's part maine coon--beautifully, strikingly handsome!

I only looked at black kitties the last time I went to adopt, since I knew they often had trouble finding homes. I'm convinced that my Lloyd is not only the best black cat in Milwaukee County, but the best cat, period. He is such a darling; in the two and a half years since I adopted him, I've never heard him hiss or growl, which is amazing since my older cat picks on him. On cold nights, he curls up next to me under the blanket. And he's so handsome. Every time I take him somewhere, he gets compliments. I think I only want black cats from now on.

I have 2 cats one is almost all black his tummy has a white spot and his back paw looks like he stepped in white paint cuz his toes are a little white, and the other looks like she wears a tuxedo they are brother and sister, my friend's mom came over and his little sister showed me this cat and told me he needed a good home, we arranged for her to drop him off later because I needed to go buy supplies, well when she came back there were 2 and I had only planned on keeping the female because I had never had a female pet and I wanted to get "my little girl" and quite honestly I thought she was "cuter." My dad was okay with keeping 2 cats instead of one so we kept both, and let me tell you the one whos black doesn't get into half the trouble she does! She has an independent streak. He never tries to sneak outside, she does constantly or she sits by the door and howls, he never tries, and he will only sit on your lap if you invite him up by putting a special blanket on your lap, she will come over whenever she feels like it and if I have food while watching tv in that chair she tries to stick her face right in it! I love them both but he's way easier to deal with because I'm not constantly trying to enforce rules like moving him off of me like Miyu when she's in the way and I don't have to constantly crawl into the bushes to retrieve him because he had a mind of his own and darted outside.

I have a beautiful little black kitty I got at the local shelter, and she is sweet, and funny, and everyone who comes into contact with her falls in love-even our 120-pound mastiff. I had no intention of adopting a cat that day (I was there to pick upm a copy of some paper work), but when I walked down the line of cats displayed in the lobby, she was curled up asleep, opened those big yellow eyes and looked right at me, and put her little paw up on the glass. You can guess what happened then. I was really surprised when the clerk at the shelter who went through the adoption with me explained that black cats were difficult to find homes for. I cannot believe such ignorance still exists in our society. But, on the other hand, I guess I can. I have had quite a few cats over the past 33 years, and my little black rescue is at the top of the list.
