The Truth about Pit Bulls

Wednesday, October 17, 2012 - 4:00pm
Happy Pit Bull

“Pit Bull.” There is no other breed of dog—or arguably, any other animal at all—whose mere mention can elicit such strong opinions. Try a word-associate game with your friends: Ask them what they think of when you say “Pit Bull.” Chances are that by the numbers, their responses will be more negative than positive. And it’s no wonder: No other type of dog is as widely banned from housing, legislated against, or incorrectly vilified by the media.

How did we get here?
Pit Bulls were once widely considered ideal family pets—affectionate, loyal and gentle with children. But in recent years, these dogs have suffered tremendously from a combination of overbreeding, bad publicity and irresponsible owners. In reality, the overwhelming majority of Pits and Pit mixes are sweet goofballs who have gotten a very bad rap.

Learn the truth.
National Pit Bull Awareness Day, on October 27, is a day of appreciation and education designed to change perceptions and stereotypes about Pit Bulls and their responsible owners. Please take a moment to learn the truth about these wonderful dogs and consider rescuing one of them from a shelter.

Are you a proud Pit Bull parent? Please participate in National Pit Bull Awareness Day, and help us dispel the myths about these dogs by leaving a comment below about your wonderful pooch.

I rescued Sheena from Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Massachusetts on 10/30/09 at the young age of 11. She was unfortunately surrendered by her sole guardian with great reluctance. You see, he had been her guardian all her life and even kept her when he was homeless. The worst part is that when he found a place to live they wouldn't let him have his dog. So when saw her on petfinder and knowing her breed and age, I felt compelled to adopt her. I was looking for a companion for my Boxer X, Jake after losing our Rottie. Let's face it, because of their faulse reputation, people aren't exactly knocking down doors to adopt pits. She has been the best girl. Loves my Jake, my two children ages 7 and 5 and our 3 cats. As a dog trainer of 17 years, I constantly tell anyone what great dogs they are and Sheena is proof. She is a wonderful dog that is so worthy of the reputation I give her and not the one the ignorant people of the world give her. Not to mention all the great pits I have trained over my 17 years. It is the people that own the pits that make the 5:00 News that should be given the needle, not the dog. IE. Michael Vick.

I am the very proud mommy of a sweet, beautiful and lovable pitbull named Sasha. She has brought so much love and joy into our lives since we adopted her from the shelter 7 years ago. She is the best dog and I am so lucky to have found her.

I am the proud "mom" of a beautiful Remy Martin pit bull named Remedy. She came to me at 8 months old because her owner could no longer keep her. I have 2 dachshunds and 3 cats and she has gotten along with them since she came home with me. The 3 share the bed with my husband and myself. Remedy just turned 4 this past April and she is a great dog I am so glad I decided to take her home. She is my husband's special girl, even though I feed her and baby her, she is a real " girlie girl" and adores her " man". We feel blessed that she came into our lives and would feel lost without her.

We rescued a pit bull that was on death row. He is the best dog ever! So sweet & lovable.. Loves people & kids. Very smart! My Lab & pit play together, run in the yard, etc. They are very misunderstood dogs & the owners should be punished for a bad dog not the dog breed! Any dogs can be vicious, it's usually all in the owner's training!

I got Mooch through a friend of a friend. She had a rough 3 years of life before she rescued me. She lived in an abusive home and had been hit by a car. She became my best friend. I suffer from migraines and when I would have one she would stay by my side. If I was sick she would check on me frequently. She loved her cat babies and would cuddle with them frequently. She adored children and became known as the "police dog" of the dog park. When fights would break out she would break them up. It was the funniest thing to see. She would see something about to happen or happening, run over and just start barking at the bad "kids" until they stopped. I have a giant Pit Bull sized hole in my heart these days as I lost my wonderful baby girl to cancer just last December. She taught a lot of people that Pit Bulls are not the mean steryotype that has been built up. I love you Moochie.

before i say anything, i would like to say that it sickens me to see some of the negative comments on this article. why would you even comment on a beautiful article about pitties and say they are dangerous and unpredictable blah blah blah? before you pass judgement, own a pit bull or even spend some time with one. i guarantee you that it will change your mind. anyway, i have been working with pit bull since i was 13 years old. i started out in rescue because i was living in a bad situation and needed to get away. pit bulls literally saved my life. i engulfed myself into being an advocate for this wonderful breed and they have brought me more joy than anything else in my life. now, at 21, i am on my way to vet school because of this breed. i saw how many pits need homes and urgent medical care and i plan on one day owning my own pit bull sanctuary. i fully expect that my practice will give free care to rescues. my own pit bull is a goofy little girl who wants NOTHING more than to love and kiss you. she is an absolute angel. and for those negative comments, i have been a vet tech for three years now and i have to tell you, the times that an animal has turned on me and tried to kill me and the doctor, they have been labs, daschunds, shitzus, chihuahuas, and other dogs that are considered "family" dogs. not once has a pit ever turned on me in an exam room.

A Pit Bull was created back in the 1800's when bull baiting with Olde English Bulldogs was deemed inhumane and made illegal. Dog fighting was then born, as well as a new breed created by crossing the Olde English with a terrier. This new breed was also created NOT to attack the gambler when that gambler needed to pull the Pit Bull from a fight. For those who would like to open your minds and really learn about Pit Bulls, you can read more about their history here: http://www.badrap.org/breed-history

We are very proud owners of a blue/red pit named Lady (as well as a 6 lb chihuahua who is the boss of the house)! She just turned 2 years old and is a whopping 85lbs. She is a very big girl but is such a big baby all at the same time! Her favorite command is "give kisses" and she will run up to the closest person to her and slobber them to death :) I have an 11 year old daughter and she is Ladys' very best friend - as soon as she walks in the room Lady is up with tail wagging uncontrollably. (So for the person commenting above saying that pit bull owners with kids should have their kids taken away - shame on you.) When our cat had kittens, our pit bull was the one watching over them, cleaning them and making sure that all were accounted for - one of the sweetest things I have ever seen! She is extremely gentle, smart, lovable, playful, loyal, energetic - the list goes on. I will never own another type of dog, and I am truly blessed to have such an amazing member of my family - as is everybody else who is a proud owner of these amazing creatures.

I have a baby blue pit she's 4 mnths goofball and wonderful with my month inf

I had no intention of getting another dog, especially a pit bull, when a tiny 8 week old puppy was abandoned at the vet clinic I had just started working at, but nobody else was willing to take the little girl home. So, reluctantly, I did. Best decision of my life!! She was a little terror when she was teething, chewed up everything (like the walls and my mattress). Her 'puppy' phase lasted about 3 years. But to tell you the truth, I didn't really care. Because she was/is the sweetest, smartest, most-loving, most-easy-going dog you could ever hope to meet. She loves meeting new people, loves kids and treats them so gently even though she was never raised around them, and even does well with other dogs. She's a velcro dog, and she thinks she's a lap dog. And the best part is, after having spent the past 10 years in the pet industry, I've come to learn that nearly all pitties are like her. I LOVE MY DOG! AND I LOVE PITTIES!

I have a 4 month old pit bull and rot mix. He is so love able. Me and my husband enjoy him so much. our puppy's name is Rocko. Rocko gets along with our two cats, they play with one another.

I have 4 great Petbulls right now and started fostering/adopting them after volunteering at an animal shelter and finding out they are the most lovable and affectionate of breeds. The are so smart, funny, clever and quirky. I can't imagine how lonely my life would be without my snuggle Pitties.

The first day I volunteered at the county animal shelter I was terrified to learn that there were several pit bulls I was expected to walk. My deep trepidation was quickly dispelled by the fun-loving and happy pit bulls that charmed me that day. Pit bulls are always turning up at our shelter. We try hard to adopt them out, but most are destined for the landfill. Now I am the one explaining to new volunteers and potential adopters what good dogs they are and how unfairly they have been portrayed in our culture. I think it could actually be considered a pit bull pogrom.

I'm a pround momma of two wonderful pit bulls! I've had Jahmyn, my 10 yr old solid black pit bull since he was 6 weeks old, and I now have my champagne colored little girl, Lucy, who we also think is now about 10. We found Lucy abandoned in a parking lot with cigarette and cigar burns all over her body when she was a pup. She is so calm, sweet and obedient that she doesn't even need to be on a leash (even though she always is)! Jahmyn is 75lbs of pure goofball. He's a sweet boy who's stood by my side for 10 years and I can't imagine a world without him. My dogs love all people, and are snuggle buddies with my toddler niece! I'm so proud to say that my two babies have changed the minds of several people who first had reservations about pit bulls!

I am a new owner of a Pitty named Remy. He is a clown and is a wonderful dog for my children, five of them ranging from 14-3 years old. We adopted him, as he was roaming the streets of Detroit. I could not ask for a better dog. Being a new owner of the breed, I was not prepared for some of the negative feedback. All I would like to do is have anyone who may have negative feelings for the breed, come to my house, sit on my floor, and have my big bad Pitt lick them, snuggle them, and beg for belly rubs! <3 him!

I found Kian roaming the streets five years ago; he was only six months old at the time. My heart told me I could not leave him wandering the streets so I brought him home. I wasn't so sure my beautiful Siberian Husky, Nieya, who was six and an only dog at the time, would accept him. But, they immediately formed a bond and she became his big sister. I also had a home full of kitties. He did incredibly well. When I checked him over to make sure he wasn't hurt or anything, he trusted me from the first minute. I knew he was a keeper. Here we are five years later, a back surgery last year to heal a shattered disk, and he's the biggest love bug you would want to meet. He's a determined young man who loves his big sister and his kitty siblings and I am proud to call him my boy. I am thankful that God put him in our lives; he truly is a gift from heaven.

My fiance has Tiger Lilly that he rescued. She was beaten & used for her puppies, starved & left somewhere. When he got her she was so thin. She turned out to be the quirkiest most sweetest dog ever. Any 1 who meets her asks what kinda dog she is & when they hear Pit Bull. They are in shock. Just goes to show what great amazing dogs they are. They are so loyal & full of love to give. Its people that are the problem. Not the breed

While I don't own Pits, I do own two beautiful, sweet American Bulldogs which get the same bad rap for their similar physical attributes. I suppor the education regarding all bully breeds. The truth is bully's are misunderstood! One of my guys doesn't have a negative bone in his body and is just a loveable goof. He is my 11 year old sons best friend! Our other bully is sensative and cautious and 100% dedicated to our family. He brings us pillows from the couch everytime we come home and loves to snuggle. Time to put an end to this negative stigma these breeds have!!

I rescued a full grown female pit bull several years ago from our local kill shelter. It was her last day to live and I couldn't let her sit there looking sad and waiting to die. She was melted against the cage looking sadly into my eyes as I walked up to her. I spoke softly to her and reached out to touch the cage and immediately felt her wet tongue against my hand. I told her to wait just a bit and I'd be back for her. At once, she stopped slouching and sat up erect with her ears up. She heard my words and knew what I said! Driving home, she sat in the back seat taking in all the sights as it had been a long drive to the shelter. She seemed amazed to see the country side. When I pulled into my driveway, she saw our home and licked my face from my chin to my eyebrow and started wagging her tail. From that moment on, she was my obedient guard dog. She tolerated my cats and my other dog very well and loved to take walks with us. One day it started to rain before we could get back into the house and she began to run with me on the end of her leash. At this point, I could feel her intense strength which she never showed. I held onto that leash and slipped on the wet grass as she pulled me along. Up into the air I flew and came down with a bit of a crash. My girl looked back at me and returned to sit next to me as I shuffled to get back up. Her head was pointed down and her eyes were on me. I could almost feel her laughter as I started to laugh at myself. I couldn't have asked to find a better friend and loving companion than our Pit Bull, Jade. She was a blessing and a gift to us all. The only thing in the house that she ever tried to attack was my vacuum cleaner. She must have thought it was an enemy of some sort, so I didn't get much vacuuming done around her. I became very good with a broom though and she accepted that. She wasn't with us nearly long enough though, and we miss her dearly. RIP, Jade! You were the best!

I have two pitbulls tyson male and Hennessy female. I had tyson when he was a baby but hennessy was my boyfriends when he recused her in a bad snow storm. Hennessy gave birth to puppies and the owners next door throw her outside in the snow storm, so my boyfriend decided to take her in and give her a loving home. Couple years down the road, I gave birth to a beautiful daughter. As she grow older, hennessy would allow her to ride on her back and run around the house. She protected us and loved us. Last month, the house catch fire and badly damage. We lost everything hennessy died in the fire and my dog tyson was dead when they brought him outside and gave him oxygen. They brought him back to life but my girl hennessy died burned. Everyday I cry for hennessy and miss her so deadly. My daughter cries every night for her. Pitbulls are good dogs just bad human in the world that treat them to fight or hurt them. Centuries ago they were used as Nanny dogs. I love pitbulls

I recently rescued a red nose pit named copper. We got here from a local pit bull rescue group. She is the sweetest dog ever she loves everyone and everything. Her and my other dog smokey who is a 3 year old husky mix who we also rescued are best friends. Copper is only 3 months old and when we walk her around town everyone always stops and pets her and says how cute she is and all she dose is sit there and kick there faces. The best part about it is people always ask what she is and say how sweet she is once I tell them she's a pit they always get a little weird and will say things like yeah they can be good dogs and walk away or pull there kids away but normally I will explain to them how good of dogs they are and how they just get a bad name. I also tell them about the rescue group I got her form and how alot of the dogs end up being therapy dogs and such. And sometimes people have a new appreciation for them.

We adopted out pittie from the Humane Society one week before she was going to be destroyed. She is the most loving, fun and grateful dog we have ever had. If only others could see for themselves these sweet natured , they would be hooked! We love our Lucy to pieces!!

my friend has always had a pit and she is the sweetest thing. she loved her butt rubbed. she had no prolem anytime i came over. i believe its the people!! they train them to be mean. look at kids and the damage parents do when they don't parent!! same thing. help the animals, other people don't!!!!

My girl Gracie is a blue-nose pit. We took her in as a puppy. I have three teenage sons and I was a bit nervous given all the media hysteria, but she was so young I felt sure I could train her "right". Well, this beautiful girl has basically trained herself. She wants so badly to please us that she will attempt to anticipate what we want her to do. She is wonderful with other animals, adores all dogs and people, and my cats will even walk up to her and rub against her. She is a very lazy dog and will spend all day wandering the house looking for someone to snuggle with. She is the very best dog I have ever had, intelligent, loving and gentle. Sometimes when you talk to her she will lean her head to the side and look at you so intently that you know she is trying to understand every word. I can't imagine life without her.

I rescued Lola, a pit mix, from the Washington Humane Society just about a month ago. Almost none of my friends were supportive of my decision to adopt a pit, and some even went as far as to send me whatever scary pit bull attack story was in the media that week. In the short time I've had her, Lola has become a favorite of the people at the vet's office, the people at the dog park, and lots of my neighbors that we regularly meet on our walks. She loves to be in the same room as me when I'm wandering around the apartment, and she is an amazing cuddler. She loves to curl up in her dog bed right outside the kitchen while I cook, which is one of my favorite things to do. She's also curious, playful, and athletic, and she has the best pittie smile in the entire world. I always thought I might adopt another breed if I get another dog, but now I'm a pit person all the way! Lola already knows basic obedience, but we're going to a class to work on more advanced commands, and eventually, I'd like her to get her canine good citizenship and to be a certified reading therapy dog, because she's great with kids, nobody what they do to her, and I already volunteer with a children's literacy group. As a recently graduated lawyer, I'm also joining the fight against BSL, with Lola standing beside me 100% of the way! My pit princess is the best thing that's ever happened to me, by far!

I rescued my baby from a shelter. His mother, a pure breed Pitbull was left behind by her family when they moved. She contracted heartworm and got pregnant before she was rescued by a shelter. I adopted one of her puppies when he was 8 weeks old. My boy Webber is the friendliest dog I have ever met or known, hands down. He loves people and little children and all other animals equally. If someone were to take him he would go with vigor! But he is also so loyal it's amazing. He has no special training but he follows me around almost constantly. He looks to me for direction and seems to be able to figure out what I want him to do without my ever giving him any kind of formal training (sit, down, take it, leave it, and uh-uh for no). He learned these things like they were a part of nature. I can be with him off leash on a football field and if I call him, he comes running full speed directly at me. He sleeps with his head in the crease of my neck every night. I love this boy beyond what words could describe. I ask myself every day, "How did God create such a special dog?" He plays with other neighbors' pitbulls off leash all the time and it is such a play fest for them all. You could never see a happier bunch of well adjusted dogs. Someone please tell ME how this is a bad "breed" when there are thousands and thousands of them that disprove this terrible stereotype all the time. What society has done to them as a breed is a travesty. We all need to take one dog at a time, no matter what its breed background is.

hi everyone, just want to tell u about my pit bull sedona we adopted her from the town shelter(kill shelter) approx. 13 months ago she was 11 months old. she is just wonderful and caring dog, she is with 2 other dogs and 1 cat who she loves. I also live in a 2 family house and my family consist of 3 young kids from 8mths to 8 yrs old. My Sedona just adores these kids and licks them all the time. These dogs have so much love and affeciate to give. This is my first pull bull and will not be my last. I hope more people give this breed a chance and see what I have discovered about this breed. I love this dog and she loves people and has no aggression at all. Next time u go to a shelter see if maybe u can save a life of a pit bull they will reward u with kindness everyday and thank u for rescuing them.

We recently lost our 14 year-old pit bull/corgi mix to cancer. We adopted her from a shelter when she was 6 mo tha d. In the years following, we brought our 2 kids into the world, and could not have asked for. Better furry family friend. She was so patient, protective, and loving, and we all miss her terribly. Luckily, we have our other dog, a full-bred pit bull, to help us heal. He's a sweetheart! And a goofball.

(Sorry for the typos!). We adopted her at 6 months old.

I have been the proud owner of a pittie for 13 years so far! My Sasha girl has been by my side through thick and thin. She was diagnosed with cancerseveral years ago and was given a few years to live. Well, we have passed that mark and even though she is a senior dog she is still happy, perky and playful. She still loves to lie in my lap and acts like she did when she was a baby. She is my friend and my protector and I am blessed every day I have her. To those of you who are wasting your time responding to other peoples negative comments, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME! You can't reason with someone who is ignorant! The media has played a huge part in the negative concept of pit bulls. The only reason they don't report on other breeds biting is because it is not news worthy! I have volunteered for several rescue groups and pits were not the ones returned for biting or attacking,it was mostly the small breeds. Let's hope that through awareness some peoples minds and hearts can be changed. We can't change them all but we can start with ONE!

I have had a pit bull (Rosie) for eight years. I have had many other dogs. In fact we have 3 dogs now. Of all the dogs we have ever had Rosie is the sweetest of all. When you look at her you you could melt. It's because of peole like Michael Vick and his dog fighting that they have a bad name.

We have a wonderful pittie/wire hair terrier mix and she's the sweetest, goofiest baby ever. She barks but isn't aggressive and all she ever wants is attention/love and rubs. I wouldn't trade her for anything and wish everyone could understand how sweet these dogs truly are.

Our first dog as a couple was a pitbull, Bogey. He was gentle w/the kids and such a sweetie! When my son was 6 yrs old, he wandered off as I was changing the baby and Bogey stayed w/him in the woods. We found them together sitting on a rock. Boget was 12 yrs old when he died and we still miss him, 27 yrs later!

I have owned many differnt kinds of dogs and I have to say Cinnamon a red nose pit bull is the kindest, loving and gentlest (accept that "tail") dog. She is smart and so well behaved. It really hurts me when I hear negative things about pit bulls. I wish the media would focus more on the good stories than the ones due to mishandling of this sweet adorable dogs.

I am the very proud "grandmother" of a itty bitty pit bull- she's small, loving, goofy and runs like the wind. She is amazing with children- adults too. Let a 2 year old chase her with a plastic sword the other night. Not a mean or aggressive bone in her body! She totally changed my uninformed mind about these amazing dogs!

i am a pit bull owner and i love my dog. she is an american staffordshire, brindle color. she is about 7yrs. i got her from a shelter and she is very friendlyl and playful. i just wish people would see the good side of these pups. just because we have irresponsible owners/breeders that doesnt make ALL pits the same. i dont know what i would do if they banned pits where i live. its funny how some people only see the bad but not how these dogs are abused, beaten, burned and even left to die out in the cold. i would never hurt my lil baby. her name is Ashley. she is a part of my family..

I have a pitbull and he is the sweetest thing. He does things like climbing into the laundry basket and sitting in the clothes with socks on his face. Breed specific legislation targets the wrong end of the leash. A responsible dog owner will have a good dog. An ignorant/cruel person will project that onto their pet.

I have 3 pitbulls two are full grown and now i have a 6 month old puppy. They are the best dogs i have ever been around! I used to have a little "ankle biter" and he was meaner than all three of my pits put together. It is sad that ignorance has given these dogs such a bad reputation. All three of mine sleep in the bed with me and are nothing but BIG babies! I wouldnt trade them for any other type of dog. I have 2 small children that play with the dogs all the time. They are very protective and wonderful dogs. I will never own any other type of breed. I love my pitbulls!

I would suggest to anyone look up the story of Sgt. Stubby. This is America's First and most decorated War Dog. In WWI Stubby saved his unit. He was a pit bull - now the country he served wants to destroy his breed. What a shame! He lived from 1917 to 1926. What an amazing breed of dog.

Bubba is a 6 year old Pit-Sharpei mix that I was lucky enough to adopt from BullyPaws, a rescue organization in Fredericksburg, VA. He is an absolute JOY. He's my best couch buddy, the best sleeping snuggler a girl could ask for, and makes me laugh every single day with his funny little ways. He's never met a person he hasn't wanted to be friends with and his best friend in the neighborhood happens to be a 13 year old Westie! It breaks my heart that there are people in my neighborhood that are scared of my little guy. Every pit I've ever known has been nothing but a bundle of love, wanting nothing more than to earn your love each and every moment of every single day. I hope that someday, these dogs can be appreciated for the truly loving animals that they are.

I have had my Blue Nose Pit Bull since she was three months old and, as of October 4, she is now a year old. I have watched her geow from a Pup chewing on shoes and stealing undies and socks to my lovable daughter . She is as sweet as can be, so lovable and full of energy . Just walking through the door she brings me joy. She's always so happy to see me . I've seen her get her head stuck in a bag of Potato Ships and bump into a door. I've seen her when she was sick and took care of her. I've been her pillow when she went through her depression . I've seen her bark and bite at her first bed like it was her worse enemy .. She's been there for me when I was going through a rough time . She's always by my side when I need love and attention . She listens, she knows when she's done wrong and she never fails to give me so much love that I don't remember why she was wrong . She is my other half and I wouldn't trade her for world !! AND I HAVE GRAND BABIES ON THE WAY !! YAYYY !!

I LOVE pitbulls and I am always advocating for them. I always adopt a pit from the shelter because i have yet to find a dog thats more sweet, loyal or friendly. My pit, Precious, loves kids and adults alike. she even gets along with my cranky cat. I am able to take food out of her mouth and play roughly with her without any fear. she is my best friend and I absolutely adore her!!!!!!!!!! her only fault is that she thinks she can fit in peoples laps for a cuddle. People are the problem not the dogs

I cannot quite imagine not having Bea- the world’s greatest pit-bull. I adopted her from the Richmond VA SPCA. I hadn’t intended on getting a pit-bull, although I was never opposed to the idea..and there she sat..waiting for me. My children, cats, and other rescue dog fell in love instantly. She is the biggest cuddle bug ever, and insists on sleeping under the covers with us. She is smart, sweet, and intuitive. The best.

I wish the word pit would not be used to name them. The very word brings a visual of a dog fighting pit to mind - you've lost the battle before it's begun as far as perception goes. People assume that most shelter bulldogs were involved in fighting, which is so not true. Can't we just call them bulldogs???

There's already an entirely distinct breed of dog called a bulldog, so no, we can't call them bulldogs. You can call them American Staffordshire Terriers if you're really uncomfortable with there name, as they were recognized as the same breed up until the late 1970s. However, I would suggest that you take ownership of the pit bull name and try to turn it into a positive instead of just trying to change it. These dogs have a long history that is both glorious and tragic, they don't need a name change, they shouldn't have to hide who they are, they need an educated public.

my princess bella is wonderful shes so playful and loves to be around people she is not agressive at all. i got her when she was a month old she is now 2months going on to 3months soon. she has gorgeous green eyes and is white with brown spots. she is my world and i would not trade her for any other dog. i always loved and wanted a pitbull i really never cared about there reputation like other people because im not a stero type i always known its how you raise them , i get so angry when people judge pitbulls , they need to stop because pitbulls are so loyal and lovable . i Love my baby i cant wait to get another beautiful pit!! :)

I had my dog for 12 years. He was a pit/blue healer/springer mix. He was the sweetest dog next to my black lab. He was playful, got along well with my dad's dog, my freinds dog's and the neighbor dog's that would come visit. He never had an agression problem. My neighbors have had two pits and they never my bothered my two little rat terriers either. It is usually the owner that makes ANY breed of dog bad!! If you see an aggressive dog...take a close look at the owner. Watch their interaction with the dog. You will see the truth.

I have for the first time got a pit bull, her name is Bailey. She is 10 mos. old and the sweetest dog ive ever had. She is loyal and protective already, but lovingly protective, i dont think there is a mean bone in her body. She is so comical i laugh at her for hrs. I have 2 chihuahuas and she plays with them but gently like she knows they are little and could easily be hurt. I had no clue that the breed was so smart, she is already, she knows what im saying when i talk to her, its amazing. Well i love the website and im glad i stumbled onto it.

I am the proud owner of 4 pitties. 3 are American Pit Bull Terriers and 1 is an APBT/Bulldog mix. Two of the four are rescues. These bully breeds need plenty of affection, exercise, training and care. Unfortunatly, these dogs fell into the hands of irresponsible owners and it went downhill from there. The media is partially to blame because they do not post relevant, factual information. Most of the "pit bulls" they are speaking of aren't actually what the news claims they are. Any dog that they claim looks aggresive is automatically assumed to be a pit bull. The website dogsbite.org is far from being factual; and this is where most ignorant people retrieve their information from. The media fails to produce anything about dog bites/attacks from other breeds just so they can cause a stir and gain ratings. It saddens me how today's society views these lovable creatures. The "pit bull" was once known as the nation's Nanny Dog. These muscular creatures guarded our precious babies (and did a great job at it.) Also, these loving companions fought in wars and died for this country. It is such a shame that people today believe all of the negativity that they see on TV. I would never own any other breed of dog--nor will I ever find a more loyal and affectionate compainion to be by my side.

Unfortunately my lifestyle does not give me the option of owning a dog, but if it did, it would be a pit bull. I've never owned one, but my son has had two that I spent a lot of time with and were the most loyal, loving, and sweet dogs I've ever been around. I can also say that living out in the country can be scary at times, but when I would walk with Scrappy at the end of the leash I felt 100% safety. These animals do not deserve the reputation that they have been given, so fill your life by adopting one if you can. They are the only dog with a real smile.
