It’s Confirmed: Michael Vick Has a New Dog

It’s confirmed: Michael Vick has a new dog. To truly become a model of the type of behavior Vick wishes to teach his children—that animals deserve to be treated with compassion and respect—Vick should take the opportunity to “break the cycle” and “be an instrument of positive change” by expressing remorse about the dogs he brutalized and killed with his own hands. This is something that we’ve never heard him do publically.

Because of this, we have serious concerns about Vick’s ability to be a responsible pet owner. We can only hope that he will set the right example for his children by teaching them to foster humane habits and a lifelong bond with their family pet.

Isnt there a law against animal killers owning pets again. Im sure his kids are demons just like him, same blood coarses through their veins. That poor dog will be brutalized now by Vick and his little snot noses. How did this happen!!!!!!!!!

First they let him back into NFL, which should not have happen!! What is that teaching the children?? That if you are good at Football all is forgiven!! Guess they have no values. Then after he killed Pit Bulls and added to the fear of these gentle Dogs they let him have a dog!! The poor Pit Bull has a worst reputation then he does and it is NOT The Breed it is the Owner!! So Sad, the wrong message is being send :(

This man has paid his debt to society and lost everything in life.....he can do anything with his life, we do not live in a communist country.....thank goodness! Even though we don't like it, child abusers still continue to have children unfortunately. People who can't afford to take care of children, to feed, clothed, nurture them still continue to have them and we allow it......this is America. Mike was not convicted as a child molester who has to register as one for life. Damn, I love my dog dearly and I feel he deserves a second chance to love one as well as his children. You people are ridiculous and probably racists as well.....

I doubt Vic would jeopardize himself with another Dog Fighting incident. Frankly? He LOST the Privledge of being a pet owner. Period. I'd bet? The dog would probably have a nice home, a pretty good life: I don't personally believe he is DUE that particular life pleasure!!! You abuse an animal or a child- ONE TIME! You do not get "A Do Over".

Vick is, and always will be an abuser. There is no miracle pill to make him all better. Abusers manipulate people into thinking they are remorseful so they can continue to abuse. Now he will just learn to hide it better. He should never again own a dog much less have his kids.

I also have serious concerns about this. While it's nice to think that this time around he will get to see dogs in a different light & know the love, trust & loyalty of a dog, I'm worried about him resorting back to his previous behavior. What happens when the dog has an accident in the house, or chews someone's shoe, or nips at someone's hand while playing? Is he going to resort back to his previous tactics? That's not a risk worth taking. Frankly, I'd rather he explain to his children exactly why they shouldn't have a dog.

The key word here, is pet! The poor dogs he fought and murdered, were "money", "objects", "property", and were not family dogs that cuddled with his children! The "culture" of some African Americans growing up in the "hood", isn't the same as many Americans growing up society! Don't get me wrong! I'm not condoning, accepting, or forgetting what Michael Vick did! He did however, pay his debt to society and "getting caught", was the first step in his healing as well. Many family members were also involved in the dog fighting business, and I wonder about them! Did all of you read the book about the Vick dogs? I'd urge you to do so, and consider the counseling Vick received, and still does. He says he wants his children to have a dog and I can only pray he teaches the right example. Vick's children will be growing up in a very different culture then he did! His children however, will one day need to hear from their father why he murdered and tortured dogs! If the courts did not prohit future "pet" ownership, it is not our call make! The ASPCA will surely monitor, and it's time for us to move on! Hate in our hearts for any man, does nothing but poison our souls! As defender's of animal rights and protection, we need to be compassionate to all God's creation! We need to lead by example!

He should not have been allowed to get another dog. If it was a normal person they would be banned from owning animals after such crude acts. If he wanted to "repay his debt" and teach a lesson to his kids, he should only be allowed to foster, not adopt. At least by forstering, he is watched more closely and his kids can see what dogs that are pulled for situations like those their "dad" encouraged have to go through and see how much rescues have to go through to rehabilitate these animals. And he should definately not be allowed with any large breed animal that can be used for fighting.

I have heard people making excuses based on race and culture which is bunk. You don't kill and murder as many animals as he did and then suddenly claim you are reformed. He killed pits but how many bait dogs he killed we will never know about that were also killed? I support the ASPCA but as long as you support Vick I will stop.

From the time this whole incident happened with Vick, I hated him with all my heart and I have never ever cheered nor watched an Eagles' game. NO, I do not believe he has the right to EVER own a dog. Let him get a bird or a guinea pig. What he did is reprehensible and basically unforgiveable. I will still not route for the Eagles and I will still loathe VICK.The brother is not cool.

Read this commentary from both Nathan Winograd and advocate for a No Kill Nation and the Director of Best Friends Animal Society who took in most of Vicks surviving dogs. The dogs he murdered didn't get a second chance and the ones who survived also have a ticking time bomb in their bodies because of the violent sport he forced them to be involved in. Is that we seem fixated on continuously punishing the convicted. If you've ever known anyone who's been convicted, it's really difficult for them to find a job afterward which kind of lends itself to the revolving door system we have where people end up back in prison. Michael Vick did time, he publically appologized. He's going to be under a microscope with that dog for its entire life. Alternatively, would it be better for the dog to not get adopted, as so many do, and be guaranteed a death?

Aren't there felons that aren't allowed to own guns again? Those are property, just like the legal systems say pets are (which I disagree with my, pets are family not property), but in that case, animal abusers shouldn't be allowed to own pets again. Period.

I really don't think it looks good upon him to do this. He shouldn't have had ANY more pets, because obviously if you are willing to participate in dog fighting, you have no concern about the safety and well being of pets or animals. Why is it ok to forgive him? That's not our job. It's God's. So while he's here, I think he should still adhere to the no dogs rule. Sure kids should have dogs. I think it would be OK for him to have a dog if he looked that little brown dog in the eyes and apologized..no wait he can't because he slammed her to the ground until she died...there is a BIG difference in someone who was not a good dog owner and the type of dog owner he was..I would be surprised if he got his new pet from a shelter..further example of a lack of empathy for the pet dog population...

He has paid his debt, however any person that has it in him to commit such unspeakable cruelty obviously has personality/mental problems. This doesn't change. It's part of him. He may be able to adjust his behavior but what about when the pup pees on his carpet and he loses control? Secondly, 18 months is far too short a penalty period. I advocate for animal abuse to be charged as a felony with mandatory sentencing.

I thought as part of his punishment that he was barred from dog ownership. Was it only for a period of time??? If so it should have definately been permanent. While I do agree sometimes people deserve a second chance I don't think micheal vick deserves or has earned one. This isn't a person who went to one fight he was helping to run this dog fighting ring and if I remember correctly he had over 100 dogs on his property, some already dead and others in such poor shape they had to be euthanized. I think he has more than proven he cannot be a responsible pet owner.

Michael vick should never be allowed to have any animal in his posession ever! He can teach his kids about animal cruelty a different way than having an animal in his care. Maybe by telling his kids what he did. Honesty might be the best policy.
