Michael Vick to Adopt a New Dog? Not So Fast!

It's true. We don't think Michael Vick would make a good doggie parent. The NFL superstar recently claimed on Piers Morgan Tonight that he's interested in getting a dog. Call us crazy, but we don't think it's a good idea. Far from it.

Despite spending 19 months in prison for running an illegal interstate dog fighting business, Vick hasn't expressed a shred of empathy toward the dogs he brutalized and killed. And rather than talk about the horrors of dog fighting, he has consistently chosen to focus on the consequences of getting caught.

In a nutshell, his actions are self-serving. We've seen little remorse and even less compassion. And let's not forget, he caused unspeakable suffering to hundreds of innocent dogs. Frankly, the ASPCA has serious concerns about Vick's ability to be a responsible pet parent.

But he served time and paid a bigger fine than most anyone ever has(losing over 100 million dollars). I'm never going to be a fan of his, but I'm also not going to spend time worrying about this when there are far more important things in regards to animal welfare to be concerned about. If anything, it will probably be a good thing for him to own a dog after all he's done....it's safe to assume he'll never engage in dogfighting again, and maybe he'll understand why it was so wrong with a new perspective. Again, there are much more important things for the ASPCA to bring attention to, this seems more like the ASPCA trying to get attention by attaching themselves to him rather than Vick trying to get attention and forgiveness.

He has not shown any regret or compassion. He should have been tortured and given the death penalty as the only reasonable form of punishment. It has been proven time and again that child molesters and people who are capable of barbaric acts against animals ARE NOT REFORMABLE. They are sick and conditioned to believe their actions are no problem. American's MUST raise hell about this to let others who also TORTURE hundreds of animals know they cannot get away with it. Dropping it would be sending a horrible message that American's will look the other way. NO WAY!!

You can't just disagree respectfully? That shows YOUR ignorance. I am a shelter volunteer, and a life long dog lover. When the news story first broke, I was pissed and wanted Vick made an example of, IMO the courts did that. But I'm not some irrational and over emotional person who can't look at things objectively, which you unfortunately seem to be. You attack my credibility in your first lines, and then offer a half truth in the third line stating that "It has been proven time and again that child molesters and people who are capable of barbaric acts against animals ARE NOT REFORMABLE"...that is a half truth because while it has been shown that pedophiles aren't able to be reformed, you are just pulling the second half of that statement out of your ass. Again, if you want to disagree, that is fine...perhaps even reasonable given certain arguments, but you're are just shouting, you aren't debating or conversing. Reactions like yours reinforce arguments like mine, you are just giving a knee jerk reaction and are not objective. I know what he did was horrible, sadly so is your attitude.

@ Patrick....He has a second chance...being able to play football again and all the endoresements he has from companies. That's his second chance. If he truly felt bad for the horror he inflicted on those dogs he would give some of his millions to stop dog abuse or build shelters or do something to help homeless and/or abused dogs. He is the lowest of the low...and NO he should never own a dog for the rest of his life.

Um, if Vick had any compassion for the animals he TORTURED beyond belief, then he would be showing signs of being sorry. As if that would matter. He F'ing tortured hundreds of helpless screaming animals. Have you seen images of the bloody bodies? Vick is a dangerous vile human being. I can't believe no one has electrocuted him, or hung him from a tree by the neck to beat him to a bloody pulp yet. He deserves the EXACT same fate of the poor helpless dogs he TORTURED. He should not be walking the streets, much less allowed to be around animals or other human beings.

In no way do I think he should be able to ever have any type of pet. He has a lot of nerve to even suggest that he should have a dog. If those were children he did terrible things to there is no way he would be able to adopt another child. I think the same goes for animals..they need protected too.

Michael Vick should not be allowed to have a dog at all...adopt, buy, foster, take care of for a friend, or under any other circumstances. If he wants a dog to satisfy one of his children who is asking for one, so be it. That child will learn that the consequences of animal cruelty include more than a prison sentence, fines and lawyers' fees. And, he will learn, again, that animal cruelty matters. Regarding Michael Vick adopting a dog for any reason whatever, the answer is NO.

His actions have brought me to tears more than once, seeing the pictures of those poor babies and what he intentionally did to them. The sports fans that have happily embraced him again saying he's "paid his dues" and the endoresements he's received again make me physically sick. If he had done these despicable acts to human beings would he ever be able to pay his dues in any court? Simply, no. The only bit of solace I can get is knowing he'll have to account for his actions in a much higher court one day. Nancy Grace, heck ya, I'd watch that interview.

While I believe it is true that no shelter would sell a dog to him, there are plenty of unscrupulous back yard breeders who would. He should be monitored frequently to make sure he never gets an animal from any source. Anyone who victimizes other creatures for his own pleasure is not curable and should be prevented from having the opportunity to inflict torture and death on any other living creature--ever again.

He served time in prison for abusing and killing animals. Why on God's earth would he even be allowed to ever own a pet again? He should be banned from being around animals and never, ever be allowed to own a pet again. It's like someone serving 20 years in jail for murder then we he gets out he's given a gun for protection. Sorry guys, I have to disagree with many of you on this issue. I think what he did was wrong and I do not condone animal abuse in anyway, but I also think he could end up being a very large supporter of animal rights given the correct opportunities. I think we need to take a page out of the dog’s book; they are all loving and all forgiving to a fault. Humans could use a little bit more of that. I feel that if we deny him this chance he would never understand fully how wrong what he did truly was.

He should not be allowed to have another dog, considering what he went to prison for! He should have to register first of all as an animal abuser to alert people in the neighborhood, to watch him. I don't believe he is going to give up all that money he must have made with the dogfights! I think he will start all over again! I watched the Pierce Morgan interview of Michael Vick. He doesn't get it. He talked about how hard it was to tell his 4 year old son why he was going to jail. He talked about how he cried when they put the handcuffs on him to be arraingned. Michael? How do you think those dogs felt when they had cuffs put on them and thrown into a ring to fight for their lives? They cried, you sneered and laughed. THIS, Michael, was your fun. You blamed it on growing up poor, and suddenly becoming famous and rich. You blamed it on your upbringing, even though you had a pet dog you loved yourself. You are ONE SICK INDIVIDUAL! Why don't you get out some of your video taped "fights" and let your son be the judge. See how much fun he thinks your sport is? If you don't show him, someone will I am sure. I think you are arrogant. You have not felt the pain of the animals you murdered. You said that you enjoyed the competition? Competition for your life?
