Michael Vick to Adopt a New Dog? Not So Fast!

It's true. We don't think Michael Vick would make a good doggie parent. The NFL superstar recently claimed on Piers Morgan Tonight that he's interested in getting a dog. Call us crazy, but we don't think it's a good idea. Far from it.

Despite spending 19 months in prison for running an illegal interstate dog fighting business, Vick hasn't expressed a shred of empathy toward the dogs he brutalized and killed. And rather than talk about the horrors of dog fighting, he has consistently chosen to focus on the consequences of getting caught.

In a nutshell, his actions are self-serving. We've seen little remorse and even less compassion. And let's not forget, he caused unspeakable suffering to hundreds of innocent dogs. Frankly, the ASPCA has serious concerns about Vick's ability to be a responsible pet parent.

Of course he should never be able to have another animal, any animal! He is a narcissistic, arrogant ******. The only reason he probably stated he wanted to get a "pet" on Piers Morgan is to annoy, irritate and inflame the humans who actually regard animals as other living beings that God placed on Earth. Whether or not Michael Vick is remorseful about his previous barbaric behavior can be debated; no animal should be put in his care as a test. He messed that up with his previous actions.

People don't understand that he's just trying to redeem himself of what he's done, he's trying but people won't let him. So let him adopt the dog because when I watched his show, he said that his daughter had wanted the dog, he's just trying to make his children happy

Yeah, redeem himself for his own good. He's famous and wants to keep it that way. He has shown in no way that he is sorry for what he has done to the dogs, he's just sorry that he got caught and his image suffered for it.

Why would anyone think he is going to magically love the dog he would get now when he was so heartless and cruel to the dogs he tortured and killed?! I do not think Michael Vick should ever have another animal, for any reason. It may be possible that he is sorry for his actions, and I do believe some people deserve second chances, but if one is a person who is capable of enjoying that type of suffering and gore, it is not just a behavioral problem; it is a character issue, and a stain on the heart and soul. He is who he is, and there are no apologies and no amount of expensive p/r can change it. While I do feel sorry for his children in that they want a pet, I feel it in the way I feel sorry for any child whose parent engages in illegal and morally reprehensible activity. I think Mr. Vick is wrong to use the needs of his children for public sympathy. On the Piers Morgan show, Vick said of a possible pet for his kids, “I can't take that dream away from them. That's selfish on my behalf." He should have been thinking of his children BEFORE he did those things.

I am all for people getting a second chance after doing wrong and doing their time. However, some evil deeds do not warrant a second chance. We do not allow pedifiles to work in our schools and daycares. We should not allow an animal abuser to claim ownership of any animal. Michael Vick not only fought and abused dogs, he tortured many to death. Torture is an act of pure evil and shows a severe instability in character and soul. He has shownn no real remorse for his horrible crimes. Instead, he is focusing on profiting from his book written of his experiences and talking about how the whole ordeal has effected him. He could do so much to help others and show he truly is remorseful and has learned a lesson. Instead, he focuses on his pain and what he went through. Until this happens, he has no business of owning another animal of any sort. I truly feel for his children, but for the sake of saving further dogs from suffering at his hands, he cannot be allowed to ever own another animal.

I think we all understand how much of a sick minded ignorant piece of crap he is. He says he feels bad because his kids want a dog but he can't own one because of what he did and it isn't fair his children need to suffer. He's right. They shouldn't have to suffer but if he really cared and wasn't a monster, he wouldn't have harmed those dogs in the first place. I thought part of his sentence involved a ban on owning any animal. But I am in agreement with everyone's comment. He should not be allowed to have a pet, of any kind. That's my opinion. I also think part of the proceeds of his book should go to a SPCA or rescue group. All the money should go to charity, but you know that won't happen.

I agree with mostly everyone on here, he shouldn't be allowed to own a dog for the rest of his life. He is talking about "getting" a dog, not adopting one. And as opposed as you, I, the ASPCA and millions of Americans may be, the three year prohibition on him owning a dog has expired. I think our opinions don't matter to him. What he really needs is some mentoring and guidance to be a good pet owner and example for his kids once he gets a dog.

You're right. Even if he is denied by every shelter and rescue to adopt a pet, theres nothing stopping him from getting one from a breeder, who all to often, don't care what kind of home their animals go to as long as the check clears. So if he really wants a dog for his kids he will get one either way. And with all the whole country watching his every move, he wouldn't dare mistreat it. So why not encourage him to adopt instead of purchase one? And this way, it will be easier to keep tabs on the animal to make sure its ok. Home checks should be required, and Vick and his kids should all have to go to classes to learn proper training and disciplinary techniques. Plus, it would be a good way for them to bond and the trainer could monitor how well the dog is being treated.
