Michael Vick to Adopt a New Dog? Not So Fast!

It's true. We don't think Michael Vick would make a good doggie parent. The NFL superstar recently claimed on Piers Morgan Tonight that he's interested in getting a dog. Call us crazy, but we don't think it's a good idea. Far from it.

Despite spending 19 months in prison for running an illegal interstate dog fighting business, Vick hasn't expressed a shred of empathy toward the dogs he brutalized and killed. And rather than talk about the horrors of dog fighting, he has consistently chosen to focus on the consequences of getting caught.

In a nutshell, his actions are self-serving. We've seen little remorse and even less compassion. And let's not forget, he caused unspeakable suffering to hundreds of innocent dogs. Frankly, the ASPCA has serious concerns about Vick's ability to be a responsible pet parent.

Absolutely right. Thank you! We would think that is outrageous idea but there's actually people who are stupid enough to think giving this jerk a dog would be a good idea. He is the scum of the earth and I'm just sick about this whole idea. As long as I can still breathe there has to be a way to stop him from having a dog. I'm so disappointed that the judge in this case didn't think that a lifetime ban from owning another animal was appropriate considering his lack of remorse. Shame on him.

He may not physically abuse them again cause it would leave obvious signs of physical abuse. But instead he'll emotionally abuse them (for example:by putting them in a dark, cold basement or room only with little water/food to just keep them alive. he's all about himself! he wants to adopt a dog in an attempt to create a better image for himself. He can't be trusted! Is there any way we can prevent him from owning a dog?? can we sign a petition?? another way to get people aware of what Michael vic is doing is going on youtube?

The Hsus with that idiot Wayne Parcelle said he should have a dog. Iris a proven fact that the Hsus has agreed with every judgement to kill dogs and cats. He even killed 97 pit puppies from a raid. Apparently he can tell Judy by looking at a puppy it is vicious !! Hsus also bushed for the victory dogs to be killed instead of them going to best friends ! That is what Hsus stands for 1% of donations goes to shelters and I think most are kill shelters

I agree with anyone who thinks that the animal should be checked on regularly by a vet or other professional who deals with animals, but should we really deny him the right to own a dog? There are millions of animals out there in need of a loving home. The ASPCA constantly reminds us through commercials and ads. Beggars can't be choosers. Who knows, maybe a loving home is exactly what Michael Vick could provide for a dog in need.

I agree with you! So many dogs in cages out there, why not give one to Vick's daughter?! And have somebody to check the dog on a regular basis ... in no way can dog be in a worse position than being in a cage! A long as they check him.... if they don't allow him to have one anymore, he could use some stupid excuse to explain the situation to the daughter and then the result could be another dog hater out there.We should do the opposite. Give him/her a dog, make regular visits and I am sure that the daughter would make Vick change his perspective about dogs a little bit...

Sadly, we all must live with the consequences for the choices we make in life and very often those consequences come back in negative ways that also affect those around us. It is unfortunate that Vick's daughter will suffer for her father's actions but IF he is indeed remorseful, he can explain to her why she can not have a pet (in a delicate manner so as not to scar her for life). Then when she gets old enough she can adopt one herself if she still feel compelled. But putting an animal at risk is too big a chance to take with this brut. Someone above was right when they called him a thug. He's NOT sorry for his brutality, he's only sorry he got caught. This is a man with a hole in his soul. He can not be trusted and should be forced to live with ALL the consequences of his actions - including explaining to his daughter why she can't have a pet.

The key word here is "loving" home. Do you consider the home of a murderer loving?? I work with an animal rescue group in my city so I know full well how many millions of animals need homes but hell would freeze over before we ever adopt an animal of any kind to that piece of trash!

I think he should be given a second chance for his daughter's sake. He should NOT be allowed to buy a pit, rottweiler, or any large dog. I have heard statements from him saying he regrets his participation in having the fighting dogs, but I don't think he was involvced with the actual fighting part of it. He spent 19 months in prison. Should he be beat with this stick with the rest of his life? What about forgiveness? Never forget of course, but his daughter should not be denied a family pet if she wants one. I do agree with monitoring the dog for a period of time to make sure he has changed his ways. To err is human, to forgive devine.

Mary, Please read "The Lost Dogs". Vick WAS personally involved with dog fighting. He brutally tortured and killed numerous dogs with his own hands in the most horrific ways. He did not simply " err" and what he did was not human. It was sick, depraved, monstrous. By all means, forgive him if you want to, but never forget what he did and what he is - a dangerous and depraved being.

He has alreay shown he has NO compassion or regard for life. Why would anyone believe that has changed? I have rescued countless animals over the years (never more than 9 at a time so I am NOT a hoarder)and many of them were abused. NO animal should have to suffer that. There are types of abuse that cannot always be seen in an exam and that is just as bad. How about he just pay some of that cash that he really should not be making to people who really can help the animals!

I followed the Vick case very carefully and I am certain that the court stipulated that he is not eligible to own dogs. I do not remember if it was forever, or just for a set period. It would have been helpful if the article author had researched this point.

I read that it was a ban from owning an animal for 3 years, and that 3 year period is nearly up. On one hand I want to agree that he shouldn't have a dog. But on the other, I can see how it might turn out to be a good thing. I'm sure that this move is all about looking good for the media. But with with the whole country watching his every move, he wouldn't dare harm the dog. And maybe in the end, having a dog, caring for the dog, and getting to know the dog as an individual with his or her own personality will truely change his mind about dogfighting, which jail time clearly hasn't done. But I think regular home checks are a must. And I think taking dog training classes should be too so that he can learn proper methods for training and discipling a dog. It would help develop of positive relationship and the trainer could monitor the relationship to make sure its a healthy one.
