ASPCA Happy Tail: Old Dog, New Tricks

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 - 10:45am
Black dog laying down outside

When Britney came to the ASPCA through the Humane Law Enforcement department, she was in pain and suffering from multiple untreated conditions.

Fortunately, the veterinary staff at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital was able to nurse Britney back to health, and eventually she became available for adoption; we could finally find a home for this sweet dog who had suffered so much.

We knew it would be a challenge.

Statistically speaking, animals who are black, large or senior, as well as those who take medication or can’t live with other animals, usually spend more time waiting for homes. Britney was all of these things, and to make matters worse, she didn’t engage much with adopters who passed her habitat, preferring to rest quietly.

Still, we knew that the right person would come for Britney, and to speed things along, we spread the word about this special canine. After seeing Britney’s picture and reading about her, Kevin Bechard tells us, “I wanted to snatch her right up.”

A few days later Bechard was going above and beyond to help Britney settle in to her new home in suburban Connecticut.

“The first couple nights I actually slept on the floor with her because she can’t do stairs, and she would just reach out with her paw and make sure it was against me,” he recalls. “Only then she would allow herself to go to sleep. If I moved away a little bit, her eyes would open.”

The love and comfort of a forever home has revived Britney, who has blossomed into a trusting and happy pup: Bechard reports that at his house Britney loves romping outdoors and goes on multiple nature walks a day.

In return, Bechard has gained a new best friend who, he says, never required house-training or manners instruction, thanks to her age. “I wish more people would consider older dogs,” Bechard says. “I was open to anything, but I was so pleasantly surprised.”

What a beautiful story... it brought tears to my eyes

Congratulation Kevin on adopting Britney! The lengths to which you went to help her acclimate to her new home paid off in big dividends of trust and love from her. Britney's story warmed my heart and brought tears to my eyes. Britney and Kevin you are a match made in heaven!!!!!

You're such an inspiration and I've decided that my next forever friend will be just like Britney.

I wish there were more people in the world like you. You have a wonderful heart!!!

Awesome!! Great to know there are still compassionate people in the world. Best of luck, an I hope you have many years together :)

Wow....I have a huge knote in my throat. How beautiful a guy you are.....and what a match made in Heaven. I'm soo very happy for you and Britney. It's so hard to keep typing because just thinking of the horrible life she had just breaks my heart to pieces. I'm so happy she had found a fur ever home. Thanks for being so a awesome guy.

I've been dogsitting for friends for nearly 20 years. I thought I was a cat person, but after adopting my 10+ year Lulu, I've become a dog person. She's a retired/rescued puppy mill mom with many years of love to give. I figure she and I are the same age. I couldn't ask for a better companion. She goes with me now when I dog sit. Such fun. Give yourself a break and look for an older dog to love you.

I DON'T KNOW WHICH IS MORE FABULOUS? YOUR HEART OR HER NEW HOME? NO DOUBT BOTH & IT SURE SOUNDS LIKE YOU SAVED EACH OTHER! HUGS TO THE BOTH OF YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God Bless you Kevin for giving this old gal the forever home she deserves....

Kevin, you are to be commended for what you did for Britney, an older dog. I believe that older dogs have so much love to give and you are going to get that from Britney to the maximum. I wish you many happy years together. God Bless You.

KEVIN YOU ROCK!! YOU ARE MY KIND OF PERSON!! I AM SOOOO HAPPY YOU ADOPTED BRITNEY THE SENIO DOG!! SHE SOUNDS GREAT AND IS NO DOUDT VERY HAPPY!! I HOPE YOU TO HAVE A LONG LIFE OF HAPPINESS AND FUN TOGETHER!! WELCOME HOME BRITNEY!! YOU ARE A BEAUTIFUL DOG INSIDE AND OUT!! IT IS HAPPY DANCE TIME NOW IN HONOR OF THIS DOG BRITNEY!!

God Bless you Kevin. I too adopted an older dog and he is the love of my life.

This is the first I have heard this. Because the animal is Black.Over the years we have had all color's. My last dog was brown& black, mostly black.Loved her a bunch!!!!!Takes all kinds I guess....:(

I commend you. We have a senior boy, Buddy is his name. At age 14+, it is a challenge. But we love him so uncondtionally, he feels the same, we do everything we can do to keep him happy. Keep up the good work. Bless you both.

You're an angel here on earth and am so thrilled you both have each other to love! :-)

I am so very happy for the both of you and that you found each other. Senior dogs have refinement and many people do not understand that & I am very happy you do! Good Luck to you both! Bonnie D

Kevin, Your article brings tears to my eyes!! Britney reminds me of the six year old black lab, Sam, that we rescued last year. Sam exhibits similiar traits as Britney. Rescue older dogs are so appreciative and loving. Thanks to you Britney can enjoy her life in a loving home!!

Kevin, thanks for giving Britney a second chance at happiness. Sounds like she has settled into a wonderful life with you!

Yeah, Kevin. Your story made me cry! I am so happy to hear you both found each other. Best wishes for a wonderful and happy life.

Beautiful story. My son adopted a Rottwieler/German Shepard he name Gunther. I was horrified because of the breeds reputation. It tuned out the dog had obviously been trained for lifesaving. When my toddler granddaughter who had swimming lessons since a small infant, went into the pool and began swimming, Gunther jumped in, grabbed her by her bikini bootom and brought her out of the pool. He did it repeatedly until they had to leave Gunther in the family room where he barked furiously as long as my granddaughter was in the pool. He slept outside the children's room and insisted you step over him to get in. He lived to about 18 years and developed such severe arthritis he couldn't walk. He was put to sleep in the arms of my 6'4 son who told him, thru his tesrs. how much he loved him.

Congratulations! I only adopt older dogs as I know how loving and faithful they are. I only wish others would do the same!

You must be a very special person with a heart of gold. I am a dog lover myself, and have a couple of rescues that became part of my family, without a doubt- a curly white schnauzer that I adopted at age 5, who is now 12 and going strong, albeit with diabetes... and a 1 1/2 year old Jack Russell that literally ran into my arms at the town railroad track! Couldn't find her owner, so she became ours. May you and Britney share may happy years together!

What a BEAUTIFUL DOG she is!! That face!!--she looks NOBLE, ELEGANT, WISE.... It'd be very difficult to say who was MORE BLESSED: Kind-hearted Kevin or Beautiful Britney. I'm so happy that they were brought together!! And also glad to have seen their story!

Awesome!!!!!! I have tears in my eyes..so nice to hear about caring people like kevin and saved animals like britney.. I have three shelter animals myself a dog and 2 cats it i had the room and could afford them i would surely have more :)

I always knew you were a great guy! You and Britney are so lucky to have found each other!

The world is a much better place because you are here, Kevin. We are all grateful that you offered a safe and happy home that Britney can enjoy for the rest of her life. I have a dog that needs shots twice a day too, but it is such a small price to pay when you get back so much in return. Give that sweet dog a kiss for me and my family.

Old dogs are the best! They have so much to teach us. When my old girl leaves me I'll be looking for another senior citizen to share my world.

Kevin you are so awesome and a true blessing to Brittney!

This is GREAT! All animals deserve a forever home. Good on you Kevin. Congratulations Britney:)

BEAUTIFUL!!! Kevin, wishing you and Sweet Britney many, many, years of shared love and happiness♥ Senior Dogs Rule!

Kevin, you are awesome. I too love the old dogs. I adopt senior Saint Bernards from a rescue in Las Vegas. You don't get to keep them very long, but they crawl into your heart instantly and never leave. Bless the senior dogs.

Animals young and old are such a blessing....I wish everyone knew that. They bring such joy and happiness.....you did a great thing...love and enjoy that baby and let her know she is loved by you....Happy thoughts for both of you

I adopted a 17 yr. old cat named Mimifrom the ASPCA. She had been mistreated for many years. She was ever so sweet after she developed trust! It helps them to have a kind, caring home in their later years when they really need it! I felt great that I made Mimi's life comfortable and gave herthe only love she ever had.Adopt older pets!

Twice I've adopted older dogs and both times I was given the priceless gift of love......it doesn't matter how long they are with us, once they touch our heart, they are there forever! RIP Bru and Emma, my two wonderful Gordons!

Thank you so much for adopting this wonderful dog. Bless you.

Kevin, you are a wonderful person. God has touched you and continue to do so! Thank you for being a gift to britney!

Congratulations from another ASPCA animal Lover. How I wish we could give every dog a real home. Enjoy every moment!

I also adopted an older dog ; no clue how old he is but like britney he sleeps touching me every night. I wish everyone would think of older dogs ; they are such ajoy to be around with little or no training.

Thank you ASPCA for all you do. To everyone that adopts an animal Young or old i pray years of blessings for you with your animals and beyond. Im so proud that so many have such giving hearts. I have a 10 year old black lab i have had her Since she was 6 weeks old. They were selling her on a beach. She has been the little black vessel God used to heal me. I will be adopting soon and an older dog is where my heart is set.

Kevin, you have saved the life of an old soul. May God richly BLESS you and Britney!

These stories and the comments that follow them bring me oh so much joy. Sometimes I lose faith that there are still good hearted folks in this world, but when I read these pages it brings me back to faith. I have soo much love for all of you in these stories and comments and for your furry buddies too! Thank you all for restoring my faith in humanity. Blessed be you and your furry and non furry families!! Lots of love from Milo, Indi, Cicely, and Elise(me)

I have always been opened to adopting golden (retriever) oldies but the cost to adopt these precious oldie Goldie's is prohibitive, especially when you take into account the added vet bills to come.

When my sweet Tiffany was near the end of her life at age 15, I was aware that I needed to begin thinking about another dog for our family. I met a family from our school whose grandchild had been in my class. They were there with their new puppy. They told me that they were looking for a home for their puppy's mother. I gave them my number and took theirs. The night before I took Tiffany in, I called to tell them that I would be at their house in the morning to pick up their dog. I got Hannah on Sept. 10th of 2001 and the next day, as we all know, the attack happened on the twin towers in New York. I had to teach that day while grieving the loss of my dear Tiffany and trying to deal with a dog who didn't like me. Fast forward to 2012 and Hannah is 11 years old, the sweetest, kindest dog I could ever have imagined and I got her "sight unseen!" Hannah had had some dog aggression problems earlier, but surprisingly, when a little blind chihuahua was brought to my door by a near-hysterical neighbor, Hannah allowed this new little girl to join the family. I also share my home with 5 rescued cats and the last one came from my school as a tiny kitten. Hannah welcomed him as well and now Hannah, Pepito and Matilda all sleep together in one sweet bundle. Absolutely, adopt a rescued dog! You will never find a more grateful animal in your life.

Britney is a One lucky dog. Her adopted dad seems to be a very kind hearted person, to take an old dog with medical conditions. For sure eventually the blessings will come upon you one day Kevin. There is a saying "That you adopt a old dog he/she will worship you and give you the unconditional love till the end of her/his life. May god bless you BOTH.

Bless all of you who have adopted older dogs and stray dogs. I got my dog when he was a puppy. He is now 16yrs. old. He has been the best. He has helped me in so many ways and has bought so much happiness and joy to my life! Yes, He take 2 to 3 different meds. I learned to give them everyday. He has arthritis. I want to make sure he's in the least pain. He does walk around my house much slower now, but he still is able to walk. He still has that spunk, especially when I am giving him his medicine. He can't hear, but I still talk to him. What a wonderful and great day when I adopted him 16yrs. ago! It still is today! He brings so much love into my life! He is a stoic dog. My vet told me that about 5 yrs. ago. I am blessed to have him. He is a poodle. All dogs can have ailments in late life. Many dogs, mixed breed or pure breed can have a long life. Just wanted to share my story because when A'lee (my dog's name) turned 15 he became deaf and blind, but he is my baby. Congratulations, Kevin for adding Britney to your life! You will get so much happiness and joy from her! You are a good and caring person. Also to the others that have and had seniors, bless all of you too!! You are great caring people!

Sorry! I did not mean for my story to go through three times! Had trouble getting it posted.

Very nice story! Some people do have compassion when it comes to rescueing senior animals, they(senior animals) are sweet and thankful for being saved! Thank you for having a kind and loving heart Kevin Bechard! We need more loving/caring people like you in this world! Hugs to beautiful Britney

Congrats, Kevin and Britney. You sound like a match made in heaven. Old Dogs are awesome. My guy also can't climb stairs anymore and takes meds twice a day, but when we walk the pasture he is as joyful as any puppy! May you and Britney have many years together. I am glad she found a terrific furever home!
