Michael Vick to Adopt a New Dog? Not So Fast!

It's true. We don't think Michael Vick would make a good doggie parent. The NFL superstar recently claimed on Piers Morgan Tonight that he's interested in getting a dog. Call us crazy, but we don't think it's a good idea. Far from it.

Despite spending 19 months in prison for running an illegal interstate dog fighting business, Vick hasn't expressed a shred of empathy toward the dogs he brutalized and killed. And rather than talk about the horrors of dog fighting, he has consistently chosen to focus on the consequences of getting caught.

In a nutshell, his actions are self-serving. We've seen little remorse and even less compassion. And let's not forget, he caused unspeakable suffering to hundreds of innocent dogs. Frankly, the ASPCA has serious concerns about Vick's ability to be a responsible pet parent.

Personally, I don't think he deserves to be a pet parent again, but if they do let him, he needs to have either an animal cop or someone else in law enforcement make regular visits to check on the well being of the animal.

No pet adoption agency should allow him to adopt another animal. He's obviously shown he has no remorse for the dogs he killed that could have served as lovable pets for others, but they were instead used as sport for corrupt and evil people. I agree with you; if he's, by some miracle, allowed to adopt an animal, he should be treated like he's on parole and get regular checks. He should be required to attend classes too.

I think instead of keeping him from owning pets they should force him to open an abused pets shelter where his wonderful fat funds goes to saving many abused pets.

I totally agree with Melissa's post. I have said this for a long time. He needs to work in a shelter and see what comes in. He needs to work with abused dogs and he needs to go to compassion classes. If he could open up his own shelter for abused pets that would be fine too. But he needs to do something. Having his own furball at home is out of the question. He should never have a pet again, not even a hamster.

For someone like him, I doubt working in a shelter would change his view on animals. Besides, he would need to be supervised. I volunteer at a shelter and they simply trust that you will be responsible with the animals, but a malicious person like Vick could easily take advantage of the opportunity. Just like what some people have said, he should receive the same treatment as a pedophile and just never be allowed free access to animals and to never be alone with one.

I agree with the idea that the piece of puke should deal with animal shelters. But he should be scrubbing the cages with his bare hands on his knees. He should not be allowed anywhere near the little sweeties; he should just clean up after them. I have been rescuing Shelties for over 20 years and have 3 fur babies who were neglected, abused and one of my boys was a puppymill rescue. He is not sorry he did something wrong; he is sorry he got caught.

I agree with Melissa too! He should open a rescue shelter or make a HUGE donation to shelters to treat abused dogs like the one he owned. Shame on him!

Micheal Vick was a terribly cruel and insensitive man who thought he was above the law and humankind. But he spent a couple of years in prison and was fined not near enough For all he did... So maybe in order to really pay for his crime he should run a shelter in the off season so he can experience first hand the pain and suffering these animals go through for no reason except for selfish x?&$@/!! humans. In addion he should give a percent of his income and time for the remainder of his life to try to make these animals life better. I really don't think he want to go back to prison and this is s great way to pay for his crime. So under the right circumstances it could be a good idea.

He doesnt deserve the joy of owning a furbaby. Whut he does deserve is to be tossed in a ring with some hyena's and let them show him how his dogs felt. Serously i dont care how much buttkissing and public talking hes done. Its the same thing as a kid trying to pull one on their folks. That this man would even utter the words "adopt a dog" is more angering than anything I've heard from him since he got caught. I am disgusted by his "public service" announcements and want to punch him in the face every time I see him but there isn't a shelter in the country who would adopt an animal out to him! Amen to these comments. What a joke and frankly it makes me sick that he wants to adopt. He didn't love the animals he had. Infact he abused, hurt, and killed them without remorse. This is all another public approval stunt!!!! He gets a dog and now can parade the dog around showing how "he's changed" which is complete BS. You can't go from heartless dog murderer to loving dog parent just cause he didn't know better.

There's no way he should be allowed to own a dog. The article is right, he's not shown the first hint of shame or remorse for the horrors that his dogs went through and has only expressed regrets about being caught. That's not turning his life around and that's rehabilitation!

And why does he "deserve" that? Because he spent a little time in jail? He killed and tortured multiple dogs over years. Would you think a sex offender should deserve another chance at babysitting? How many chances would you give this guy? Not only for what hes done, but he doesn't even seem sorry. I wonder if there is a way that anyone, like maybe the rescuers who had to handle all the mess he made of those poor dogs' lives at that hell on Earth, could file some kind of law suit to extend or make permanent that "No Pets" decision against him... Any lawyers out there? Vick is a perfect argument for a Animal Abusers Registry like those enforced on Sex Offenders. He doesn't even deserve a fish. His karma alone would kill it.

absolutely not! I know after everything happened his daughter wanted a puppy and I believe as part of his punishment he should have to tell his daughter about the horrible things he did and why she can not have a pet because of him. He shouldn't even have a job making millions. He is a bad person.

He should not have to tell his daughter what he did to those dogs. No matter what her age, she does not deserve to have those kind of mental images. A simple, "I hurt dogs before and I'm not allowed to have pets because of it. What I did was wrong." should suffice.

"What I did was wrong?" Bullshit! He should have to stand out on a street corner with pictures of the dogs he MURDERED with a sign that says "I, Michael Vick, am a CONVICTED MURDERER!" You don't think his daughter needs to see what he did? Think about the rescuers who had to clean up the dogs that he MURDERED! I'd be willing to bet to this day they still see "mental images" of what that sicko did. He should be strung up and fed to the bears if you ask me. Same exact thing he did to all of those dogs.

His daughter probably knows more than we think that she does, and if not, eventually, the knowledge and brutality will come to her most likely via the internet if she ever decides to do a simple search on her father's name. That man shouldn't have been allowed to breed at all.

I cannot believe he would be allowed to ever own a pet again!! If a person abused or MURDERED a child (because that is what this piece of garbage did), they would be put in jail FOREVER and if they did get out they would never be allowed to adopt a child...Same should go for this situation! I feel that a law needs to be passed that will prohibit anyone with a record of animal abuse to ever own a pet for the rest of their lives. Micheal Vick is nothing but a million dollar thug, and he got off too easy in my book. I's like to fit him with a meat suit and throw him into a pit of hungry/angry pitt bulls. If they can ban animal hoarders from having pets again then killers like Vick who never even had any intention of doing anything good for their animals should surely be prohibited from any further animal ownership. Even though what the hoarders do ends up with victimized animals, at least their original intentions were to help save those animals instead of treat them like they have no heart or soul. Vick's name should be at the top of the Animal Abusers' Registry list.
