ASPCA Happy Tail: Old Dog, New Tricks

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 - 10:45am
Black dog laying down outside

When Britney came to the ASPCA through the Humane Law Enforcement department, she was in pain and suffering from multiple untreated conditions.

Fortunately, the veterinary staff at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital was able to nurse Britney back to health, and eventually she became available for adoption; we could finally find a home for this sweet dog who had suffered so much.

We knew it would be a challenge.

Statistically speaking, animals who are black, large or senior, as well as those who take medication or can’t live with other animals, usually spend more time waiting for homes. Britney was all of these things, and to make matters worse, she didn’t engage much with adopters who passed her habitat, preferring to rest quietly.

Still, we knew that the right person would come for Britney, and to speed things along, we spread the word about this special canine. After seeing Britney’s picture and reading about her, Kevin Bechard tells us, “I wanted to snatch her right up.”

A few days later Bechard was going above and beyond to help Britney settle in to her new home in suburban Connecticut.

“The first couple nights I actually slept on the floor with her because she can’t do stairs, and she would just reach out with her paw and make sure it was against me,” he recalls. “Only then she would allow herself to go to sleep. If I moved away a little bit, her eyes would open.”

The love and comfort of a forever home has revived Britney, who has blossomed into a trusting and happy pup: Bechard reports that at his house Britney loves romping outdoors and goes on multiple nature walks a day.

In return, Bechard has gained a new best friend who, he says, never required house-training or manners instruction, thanks to her age. “I wish more people would consider older dogs,” Bechard says. “I was open to anything, but I was so pleasantly surprised.”

God bless you!

You're a true hero Kevin! Britney is one lucky dog. Thanks for showing her such love in her "golden" years! Such a great story--brought tears to my eyes that there are good people out there like you that love animals just as much as I do!! Here's to many happy years together with Britney!!

Congrats and thank you so much for giving this special soul a forever home. This story brings (happy) tears to my eyes.

What an awesome story. As a dog rescuer myself, I understand the love and trust between these two. God bless them boyh.

We need more people like you. Thanks!

This is a great story! Old dogs are so great and have so much to offer. Good for you Kevin! Enjoy!

I commend you for reaching out with a big heart to give Britney her seniors years the best part of her life. It made me tear up.

How Lucky for Britney and you!Our husky-shepherd(from a shelter on Long Island)our beloved Kasey lived to be 17 wonderful years. She passed 5 years ago and we still miss her.May your journey with Britney bring you much happiness.

You have made an old dog very happy, Kevin, and you have added some stars to your crown in Heaven. Britney will repay your kindness with unending love. What the world needs is more compassionate people like you.

What a lovely story! Bless your kind heart, Kevin. You were Britney's buddy till the end, and I'm sure she'll be waiting for you at the rainbow bridge when your time here ends. Thank you for sharing! And thank you to ASPCA for all that you do!

This is a beautiful story. It brought tears to my eyes. Thank God for people like you, Kevin!! Please give her a hug for me!

I am so happy to hear that you adopted each other! I volunteer with Carolina Basset Hound Rescue (www.cbhr.com) and there are frequently senior or special needs dogs that need good homes. These are great dogs that many shy away from for whatever reason. I pray that more folks consider adopting an animal no matter the age, color or size!! May God bless you and others like you! NDalton

Kevin there should be more people like you. Your story made my eyes water. Old cats and dogs are sweet and lovable. Thank you for taking a chance on Britney and I wish you all the best with her.

I adopted Emilie Sue from our local animal shelter and she was much like Britanny wherein she wanted to be close by us. She had separation anxiety and we worked with her for two years so she could be left alone. The internet has wonderful tips on how to build up their confidence to be left alone. We did it step by step and she can now be left alone up to 5 hours alone. She is so sweet it was worth every day we spent helping her.

I also have rescued an adult dog a pomeranian. there was very little training involved.. she also now takes two meds a day.. but I adore her..she is the best dog I ever owmned..I would do it all over again. Blessings to you and your new companion.

I love older dogs. My last two dogs came to live with me when they were 5 and then 9 years old. They are the most wonderful pets who are housebroken and trained. Puppies are adorable but a lot of work. With an older dog, there is maybe a 4-8 week transition period and then your golden. I will always get an older dog. They are the best.

this was a blessing to read, I am glad there are people willing to do whatever it takes, my husband and I have adopted many, and I mean many unwanted cats, and a boston terrier, some have ailments, but all are loving and dedicated. GOOD JOB

Right on Kevin!! I love dogs and it is always a wonderful blessing when someone comes along to offer them a new home. May the two of you be very happy! :-)

Let me start off by saying I don't hate puppies but do hate the puppy stage they go through. I much rather have an adult dog they are calmer and much better behaved and they are always over looked it makes no sense to me.

Great story! It's wonderful to hear of people like Kevin that welcome an older dog into their home. Senior pets like Britney have so much to offer.

Hi Kevin, I am so happy for you to find such a great girl, she will fill you days with joy as you will give her all the love you can to make her life enjoy. God bless you for being you. Take care, plus enjoy each other because there is nothing better than to come home to a friendly wag and lick from you best friend in life.

I almost didn't read this; I can't take all the sad stories out there. But the promise of a happy ending caused me to read this. When my current pets pass on, I plan to do exactly what you did. I will go to a shelter and ask for the dogs & cats that are passed over. I know I will never regret it.

On handing man's best friend a life saver. Maybe one day she will save you right back! Best, Erika

Kevin; When I read of the horrors done to animals I begin to think there are no people left on the planet with a heart. Thank you and I must say all of us who love animals wish you all the best ! Thank You so much !! Regards, Paul

I also adopted an 11-year-old dog and gave him the best last 2 1/2 years possible. You are a wonderful man! <3

I love you, Kevin!!! Bless you for giving Britney such a loving home--she is one lucky dog!

Surely we don't expect people to totally disregard us because we get older? Neither should we give up or disregard senior dogs and cats. Well done Kevin - for giving an older dog a new lease on life.

Kevin--What a great guy you are to open your home and your heart to Britney. You both have found something special! Britney--You lucky dog. You deserve the BEST and now you have it. And--woof woof bark woof!

Kevin, such a wonderful happy ending for both of you! You've inspired me to do the same.

God bless you and Britney. I hope you both have many years ahead with lots of wonderful memories and love!!

Senior dogs need love too. I am so happy she found someone to care and love her like she deserves. There should be more people like Bechard.

Thank you Kevin for having that special Heart to save a special doggie like Brandy. I have a pit since she was a puppy, she is now 11 yrs old. She will NOT sleep alone either. She's a cuddle bug like Brandy :-)

God bless you Kevin for your compassion. I am sure Britney is giving you lots of affection and gratitude too :-)

Kevin, I own an old dog who is 16. He is a goldenretriver and he is awsome. Thank you Kevin. People like you are amazing.

Every time the ASPCA sent out an e-mail trying to find a home for Britney, it broke my heart... now I'm overjoyed to find that she's found her forever home, with an amazing compassionate person. She will repay you tenfold, with all the love she can give.

Im so thankful Brittney has a forever home. Thankyou for what you are doing!!!!

Adopting older dogs are the only way I go!!! Congratulations on a "perfect fit".

I only adopt older dogs, they eyes show their experiences and they are the best pets. No need to train them, always having them on a leash. I have three dogs, my Balto was adopted from the pound and had all sorts of emotional problems. Now, he walks next to me without a leash and never leaves my site. They just know where they've got it good.

Britney is a very lucky gal to have found Kevin. Thank You Kevin for providing for her in her later years..

I'm so happy and you and Britney found each other, Kevin! Thank you for opening up your heart and home to Britney. May you share many happy years together...

I remember seeing Britney listed for adoption. I could not have adopted her, but hoped that someone else would, knowing the challenges that she would face finding a home. It makes me so happy to learn Mr. Bechard had the generosity of heart to take her in.

I'm so happy Britney has a home and an owner who loves her. I have 2 "rescues" and love them both. My daughter runs a kennel for these "precious pups" and I'm so happy I have two of them that she rescued. I just spent 8 weeks in a rehab and my daughter brought Mia, my chihuahua, to see me a couple of times and the other patients enjoyed seeing her as well. Don't hold back on a dog that is older - he/she might just be the best friend you've ever had.

Congratulations and thank you Kevin for rescuing and showing Britney such love. I've rescued a few senior golden retrievers, and my current baby is 15.3, has been with me 3 years now and is as happy as can be. Short walks, long car rides, long days lounging in the sun, healthy T R E A Ts, and he returns our love tenfold. I consider us (the humans) the lucky ones. I would encourage all adopters to not pass over a senior, your time together may be shorter, but every second is worth it.

I love this story! And way to go Kevin for giving this special senior an awesome home and life to live out in her later years. I ended up adopting an older dog, and he has been awesome! I wouldn't trade him for the world!

It's so sad when a dog is older and is tossed aside. This man is a Saint, sleeping on the floor next to her until she felt comfortable. Soo, sooo sweet. Britney will pay him back 100 fold with love and devotion. To everyone that contributed to this beautiful dog's recovery, God Bless, wonderful job.

Thank you Kevin for giving this sweet girl a chance. It warms my heart to think she is in a loving home now. Being in animal rescue, for years my husband and I have adopted grandma and grandpa dogs, they are awesome! I wish more people would consider adopting older animals.

I've had anywhere from one to four dogs at a time and they have all come to me as adults. They all live long lives and love to go everywhere with me. They all have gotten on with my cats, sometimes chasing them....good exercise for all. There's a wonderful charity in Snohomish County, WA called "Old Dog Haven" with volunteer foster homes. I've had lots of help from them in different situations. SO, yeah, old dogs rock!

I love the older dogs. They are calmer and usually are house broken. They are so appreciative of having a home of their own and settle in quite easily. Love my older dogs.
