ASPCA Happy Tail: Old Dog, New Tricks

Wednesday, September 26, 2012 - 10:45am
Black dog laying down outside

When Britney came to the ASPCA through the Humane Law Enforcement department, she was in pain and suffering from multiple untreated conditions.

Fortunately, the veterinary staff at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital was able to nurse Britney back to health, and eventually she became available for adoption; we could finally find a home for this sweet dog who had suffered so much.

We knew it would be a challenge.

Statistically speaking, animals who are black, large or senior, as well as those who take medication or can’t live with other animals, usually spend more time waiting for homes. Britney was all of these things, and to make matters worse, she didn’t engage much with adopters who passed her habitat, preferring to rest quietly.

Still, we knew that the right person would come for Britney, and to speed things along, we spread the word about this special canine. After seeing Britney’s picture and reading about her, Kevin Bechard tells us, “I wanted to snatch her right up.”

A few days later Bechard was going above and beyond to help Britney settle in to her new home in suburban Connecticut.

“The first couple nights I actually slept on the floor with her because she can’t do stairs, and she would just reach out with her paw and make sure it was against me,” he recalls. “Only then she would allow herself to go to sleep. If I moved away a little bit, her eyes would open.”

The love and comfort of a forever home has revived Britney, who has blossomed into a trusting and happy pup: Bechard reports that at his house Britney loves romping outdoors and goes on multiple nature walks a day.

In return, Bechard has gained a new best friend who, he says, never required house-training or manners instruction, thanks to her age. “I wish more people would consider older dogs,” Bechard says. “I was open to anything, but I was so pleasantly surprised.”

Hey Kevin..Congratulations on being a good guy who likes old dogs....Good luck with her

Yes...I completely agree! I wish more people would consider adopting older dogs as well as puppies! I have adopted 2 older dogs and the most recent one was just this February 2012. She is house trained and the MOST LOVEABLE thing ever! I hope more and more people consider aopting older as well as younger! Adopt them all...!!!!

Older cats, too!

Kevin, Congratulations on being a great guy and open to the possibilities of a new "older" companion. May you be blessed with many happy years with Britney...

Your kindness is so touching... thank you for your good soul, and for bringing that girl home, Kevin.

This story really touched my heart. I, too, have an older dog along with a much younger one and the older one is so sweet and loving and yes, she does sleep a lot and doesn't want to be disturbed by the antics of the younger one. Britney needed to feel love from someone and Kevin gave her just what she needed. Great job Kevin and you go girl (Britney)

What a blessing you are to each other. Happy trails Kevin and Britney.

Thanks Kevin and ASPCA for giving Britney a loving home in her old age.

Yeah Kevin!! Sounds like you both have a terrific bond! Thanks for thinking of a senior for adoption!! Old dogs ARE the BEST!!

Thanks to all the wonderful people that GOD has put on this earth to help these very needy animals. People if you don't like animals or you can't afford to take care of them don't get one.

thanks s much to the ASPCA for not giving up on her, and to Kevin for giving her a great home! i'm a fan of older dogs... i'm so glad she's getting care and attention and love now :)

GOD BLESS YOU! You are a great guy,Kevin and these days they are in short supply. Take good care of Britney and share much happiness together.

This story brought tears to my eyes. Thank you Kevin for giving Britney the love and the wonderful life she deserves! I know you feel blessed to have her as well. What a wonderful story! :)

It's amazing what a little love will do, but she will give much much more love back to you.

I was so happy to read this story and I even teared up when Kevin wrote about how he slept on the floor with her. I know you are so lucky to have found each other, you both sound like real sweethearts! Good luck to you :)

The tale of the outreached paw struck me. I've always felt rescued dogs APPRECIATE you the most, having seen the downside of life. What agreat companion and friend you have found in each other! I wish you all the best!!

I love a happy ending. :) Congratulations to Britney and Kevin for providing a loving, caring, stimulating, forever home. Best wishes!

Yea Kevin. You are a hero. My senior Golden Retriever, Sunnie, my best friend on this planet, is sitting by me right now. God bless you, Kevin. You and Britney are both blessed!

I would be willing to gamble that you will be the big winner in your relationship with Brittany. She is indeed a very fortunate dog...wish there were more people out there to do for another older dog what your gift of generousity has done for this girl. "YEAHHHH!" and a very big "WAHOO" to you!

Thanks to the ASPCA for giving her the chance to continue living and Kevin you are wonderful for giving her a forever home.

Way to go Kevin. I have had two large black dogs, and I know that they have hearts as big as the whole outdoors. My current "baby" is going on 8, and is a Rescue Dog.... I wouldn't trade him for the world.... we also have a brindle Black Mouth Cur..... The best dogs out there.... they give so much love.

i am crying tears of joy for this old girl. way to go, britney!! thank YOu to the kind soul who took her in. you are blessed, as is she. <3 love this story and hope to read many more like it! :)

Kevin- I adopted a senior dog with multiple issues months ago that looked just like her. He just passed away two nights ago. Although I'm heartbroken, I am grateful that our paths crossed. Instead of dying on a concrete floor waiting for a home, he passed in my arms after licking my hand. He also needed meds twice daily, had multiple illnesses, and had been found in March on the side of the road in shock after being hit hy a car. I am a vet tech and was doing my internship at the clinic the police rushed him to. His family never claimed him after three months of hospitalization. He was aggressive with staff...except he wasn't with me. I laid on the floor with him comforting him the day he was hit. When he recovered, he remembered my voice. I ended up adopting him after his three months in the hospital and took him for a month long vacation at a cabin in the woods on a lake. I learned that he had no experience inside a home or car...a senior dog. That made me so sad, and more determined than ever to spoil him and give him a warm, loving home for his final chapter. I got him a memory foam bed and he was in heaven. That dog gave me a lifetime of love and loyalty in just months. Even though losing him was sad...I think of how he died peacefully with someone telling him he was loved and a good boy. When I first met him he was about to die in pain and was terrified and alone. Knowing that I could give him that gift made the heartache worth it. I encourage more people to adopt senior dogs. Like you, Kevin, I found that he learned housetraining and rules overnight. He may have appeared to be ferocious to everyone, but I learned that he was just a scared boy that really was a sweet, sweet boy. I hope you get a lot of time with your new best friend, and you have given her a happy last chapter in her life.

Honey, I have tears running down my face after reading your wonderful story. How awesome it was that you and he found each other! You were his Angel and he adored you to the end. I'll bet the farm that he will be the first one to greet you when it's your turn to Cross Over!

Your story has me crying too! What a precious gift you gave that dog! I'm so sorry to hear about your loss, but what you did for that dog is truly inspiring and something that you should be always proud of. I love your story...reminds me of how I treat my furry "children"! Thank you for sharing

OMG...so sweet...restores my faith in people when i hear stories like this one.

Bless you, Christy, for your goodness. I've also rescued abandonned dogs from the street. It was on an especially icy afternoon, January 14, 2000, that I saw a copper-colored pit-mix running back and forth in an empty parking lot along the Bronx reservoir, desperately looking for the people who drove her there and left her. I called to her; but, miserably preoccupied, she ignored me. I continued following her until I found her curled up in a corner chewing her foot in despair. Unfamiliar with dogs at the time, I approached her tentatively; but when she licked my hand, I knew we would be friends. She was also pregnant and later had 7 puppies, one of which I kept. Brandy was a winsome dog. She brought me laughter and companionship. She taught me patience and sociability, qualities in which I was limited. She introduced me to new friends, of which I had but few. The last 6 months since Brandy's diagnosis of kidney failure have been difficult but precious. She was brave and cooperative throughout, never causing more trouble than she had to. She left me the night of September 3, 2012--softly, gently, on the the wings of that huge golden butterfly I saw from my window that morning. I miss her so much....

Awwww what an awesome story. God bless you for taking Brandy home and giving her a good life, what was left of it. It is so nice to hear that she didn't die alone in that empty parking lot. I will NEVER understand how anyone can just leave a dog behind or drop them off to be alone. I cannot comprehend such cold hearts. Your a good person for saving her.

WOW YOU HAD WONDERFUL TIME WITH YOUR FURRY CHILD. I AM SITTING HERE AND TEARS ARE RUNNIMG DOWN MY FACE. BLESS YOU FOR YOUR BABY CHRISTY....WHEN I SEE DOGS LEFT ON THE STREET RUNNING AROUND...I WANT ALL OF THEM....I WISH I COULD HAVE THEM ALL....I AM A BORN DOGGIE MOMMY. MY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO YOU ON YOUR LOSS BUT G-D BLESSED YOU WITH HER.

This is such a touching story!! I teared up reading your story. Definately is good to hear of the many kind hearted individuals who go Out of their way to help abandoned strays. I too am one to step in when I see animals who seem to be lost or strays. I have adopted from shelters And brought strays home. Of course I took each of the strays to my vet To scan for a chip. We have been so blessed by four different dogs And three cats. Two of the dogs are black and big which I understand is harder to adopt out. One had a severe case of heart worms. At first he would run away from us all the time because he didn't trust anyone. He could never count on anyone! After a short time with our family much love and care bear has learned he can count on people for his needs. He has a huge heart and thinks he is a small lap Dog. So funny people can be afraid of a black dog. He is afraid of everything. Bless his heart. He is rather large though. A hundred and twenty four pound Lab. They have showed our family how much they appreciate everything they get to do. Showered us with love and kisses daily. Forgiveness is always in there hearts They are not worried about possessions. They just want petting, food, praises, a warm place to sleep and us. They remind me daily of what I need to be like toward others. Kudos to all of you who are out there doing good works for our world. Thank you to the ASPCA for all your hard work and willingness to keep going and making a difference in the lives of all these helpless animals. You are much appreciated. There truly is an unconditional bond you are guaranteed with adopting a pet. I can't imagine what my life would be like without all my furry friends!!

What a heartbreaking story this was! I am in tears of happiness for the abandoned dog you took care of and gave a home. And also when his life was to end you overwhelmed him with love and comfort and made him undestand that he would never be alone anymore.. Snif..snif..

Thank you! thank you! Thank you for your incredible goodness, love, empathy and compassion. I adopted a 9 yr old with many issues. . . one of which was scary nightmares. I jumped out of bed and cuddled her in my arms and told her that we all loved her and she had no need to feel abandoned again because this is her forever homw. Of course I have been repaid with love, loyalty and devotion. It's an empowering feeling knowing we have made a difference to an abused animal.. I loved yr story and Kevin's, too. It makes my heart so peaceful to know there are so many people like you and Kevin. You have a soulmate in your sweet dog who, I am sure, stays very near the love of his life, even though you cannot see him. Gilllian

It's so nice to hear that there are many wonderful kind hearted people out there. I also adopted a very happy wonderful mixed Shepard/Golden Ret senior dog that was abandoned three years ago. She was redlined at a high kill shelter with no hopes of being adopted out before her time due to many issues. A rescue group contacted me and I agreed to foster her. We raised money to pay for her knee surgery among other problems she had at the time. I eventually adopted her. Eight months later after adopting her, I had a cancerous tumor the size of a grapefruit removed from the side of her stomach and the vet gave her 6 to 8 months to live. After doing a lot of research how to fight the cancer naturally by giving her the best food and supplement, I still have her at 13years old now. Not bad for one large dog who had so much issues when I first got her 3 and half years ago and she keeps on going. Older dogs make the best pets/friends one can have. I know because I've had several of them. All from shelters.

Kevin and Christy thank goodness for people like you. Christy I can't imagine what would have happened to your pup if you hadn't brought him home for his final stretch of life. I know so many animals don't get the chance at that last deserved retirement. Hats Off to you both.

Both Kevin's story and the response from the vet tech who adopted a senior dog after the 3/month hospital stay made me cry boat loads of tears of joy and thanks! Although I'm a feline adoption rep at our shelter, I see these wonderful (senior) dogs every day. When one gets adopted, everyone stops what they're doing to give a round of applause to the sweet dog (and cat) going home. Bless you Kevin, the vet tech and everyone else who adopts older animals. They are so appreciative and know you've given a senior what they rightfully deserve - love, respect and dignity in their final chapter.

This story is sweet and bitter sweet. I to took in an older dog that took pills 2x daily and was very very drawn in and fearful. I had Dylan for 4 years and after that first year he knew who his "mommy" was. His illness was seizures and when he was having them he came right to me. He also had to be put to sleep in May due to having cancer. BUT HE WAS MY PUPPY HEART. SO I UNDERSTAND

I don't have a dog right now, am still paying off the bills I got after my sweet little cocker passed on. People think I was crazy, but I don't begrude her care. I only get rescue dogs and senior ones at that. They have alot of love inside and can teach us much. Some of my family came to be with me the weekend I had to put her down and my young grandson still asks me if I miss her. He learned compassion, sympathy and that it's OK to cry for something you love. He even suggested to my daughter that they stop and get me a new dog so I wouldn't be so sad. Kuddos to everyone who rescues a dog and especially a senior one. Please, write to the USDA and support their effort to close the loophole that puppy mills use to keep thousands of dogs in bondage.

I LOVE THIS STORY :) KUDDOS TO YOU :) WHAT A HAPPY ENDING AND A BEAUTIFUL BEGINNING TO MY DAY AS WELL :)

Thanks for opening up your heart and home to this beautiful senior gal. We adopted a 13 year old lab a few years. We only had the privilege of his company for about a year and a half but he was a happy dog during that time and we were happy as well. I too wish more people would realize how great the seniors are.

Congratulations Kevin and Britney on finding each other! My dog Tuti is 14 years old. Older dogs have so much to give. It's wonderful to know Britney will live out her remaining time in a loving home! Big hugs to you both :)

It's great to hear about the good stuff once in awhile and this one brought happy tears to my eyes. I'm so happy Beautiful Britney found her best friend in Kind-hearted Kevin. You two are perfect for each other. Thanks to the ASPCA for all they do as well.

I was so touched by the story of Britney. As a dog trainer for more than 17 years, I often suggest to people considering adoption to seek out older dogs. They are usually already trained and settle into their new lives with grace and gratitude. You might not always have them for as long as you hoped for, but it's always worth the love you'll share, because that will live forever.

This made me tear up, as I myself just rescued two dogs that were left at a shelter. They are the loves of my life and I see how a Happy Home has healed their hearts and they are now complete. Nothing is better in Life then the feeling of saving another from loneliness and pain. Kudos to Kevin! All the best with your Sweet Britney- she's adorable!

I just want to give a big hug and a kiss to Kevin for adopting Britney. Kevin has a very kind heart. When I was reading the story of Britney, tears were steaming down my face, but thanks to Kevin, Britney now has someone to love her.

I have no hesitations about adopting an elderly dog, except the heartbreak of knowing they will not be with me as long as a younger one.

Kevin, Britney will give you more love than you will ever know. God bless you, Kevin, for giving Britney her forever home and loving her like she should have been loved all along. May you two have many years together!

God bless you and your loving heart! It's not easy giving your heart to an older dog knowing you won't have as much time together as with younger dogs. But the love that comes with these animals is so worth it.

We won't adopt anything but senior pets...we usually end up not having enough time with them..but we wouldn't do it any other way.

Yay Britney and Kevin! Wishing you may happy years together. I have a blind 17 year old chihuahua who is the love of my life. We both congratulate you on your life together!

Congratulations, Kevin! You will be given nothing less than unconditional love from Britney! On October 10, it will be 2 years that we've had our Sam, a Tibetan Spaniel. We think he's now about 13, as he was found as a stray in rural western Washington State. He decided that we were his new parents as soon as he met us! Life with Sam has been amazing! He is completed house-trained and has never chewed anything. He has quite a vocabulary. For the first 6 months that we had him, he made not a sound. Now, he loves to talk! Sam is so precious to us. For what we have given him, he has given right back to us ten-fold. Senior pets are fabulous!
