423 Days in Our Shelter—Help Us Find this Senior Kitty a Home!

Monday, July 16, 2012 - 10:15am
ASPCA Adoptable Cat

Noni has been under our care for 423 days—and that is just way too long. She's receiving lots of attention and socialization with us, but even the ASPCA Adoption Center is no substitute for a loving family.

Noni is one of the prettiest, softest tuxie ladies we've ever seen, and she loves interacting with people, whether she's chasing a toy or receiving a few snuggles. But Noni's life has been anything but easy. She once lived in a hoarding home, and she came to us emaciated; we soon discovered that Noni had an untreated hyperthyroid condition. Our dedicated veterinary staff got Noni back on track, and now she is healthy and flourishing.

But Noni's adopter will need to keep her healthy, and that means not only twice-daily medicine for hyperthyroidism but special food for her sensitive tummy.

We can't wait to see Noni's story of triumph and recovery close with a happy ending, and neither can she. If you've got room in your heart for a special lady like Noni, please consider meeting her today at the ASPCA Adoption Center in NYC. Noni enjoys other cats and wouldn't mind a home with a resident feline friend. If you have any questions, please call the Adoption Desk at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4900.

If you can't bring her home, please share her on Facebook and Twitter. Online fans: You've helped us find homes for animals before—let's do it again for Noni!

Hello, I live in New Orleans, but would LOVE to adopt this beauty. If someone can get her to me, I will take her.

In regards to the above comment for the New Orleans person - I live in Philly and would be willing to help transport Noni if we can find a chain of people to drive her to New Orleans! (I have seen this on TV for dog adoptions - does the ASPCA have something similar for cats?)

I live 3.5 hours north in Vicksburg, MS and could help take her some of the way, if that helps.

I'm in Jersey and can take a leg. Lets get Pretty Kitty Noni to New Orleans!

I live in Tupelo, Mississippi and will be traveling to Vicksburg August 4th for the weekend, if someone can get her close to Tupelo, I can do the rest!

I live between Nashville and Memphis (southern mid/west TN) and my son lives in Nashville. We could get her from Kentucky line to Tupelo

I am on the eastern most side of West Virginia on the border with Virginia. I can take a leg! I could get her to Kentucky.

I live in NYC and can get her to NJ if she hasn't already made it there.

Check out this group on facebook. They help to transport kittys that have homes... https://www.facebook.com/groups/URRKN/

Did Noni end up making it to New Orleans safely?

omg she looks just like our male cat sammy, identical. sammy would have been 11 years old this year but he passed away due to a heart defect. i cannot believe how identical she is to him.

if i was closer i would adopt her in a heartbeat

There isnt much I can do to help from Seattle, but please keep us updated on Noni. I have spread the word to all of the people I can. This special kitty needs a loving forever home soon!

I will adopt her if New Orleans fails to do so! I live in NC and would fly her here.

Please be careful when transporting animals via air without an accompanying person. Animals are often handled worse than luggage and I've heard some horror stories of missing and worse yet, dead traveling pets.

I just want to thank u for allowing her to stay alive while waiting, here in windsor ont, we call spca to help a cat , can we bring her in, they told me sure, but she will be dead by the end of the day so she has better luck on the street...i dare say the words humane should no longer be on the sign

I have posted this on my page and hope it helps to make this little girl happy. I have two tuxedo cats already and just no more room for this little lady.

I wonder if she's a candidate for I-131 treatment for her hyperthyroidism. While expensive, this would negate the need for twice daily meds and make her much more reasonable for the average family to adopt.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing, actually. We had it done for one of our cats - if they would do that for her it would potentially make her more adoptable..though if she will eat the pill in those "pill pockets" its not too hard to give meds.

We are interested in adoption. I work here in NYC in the 50s. My husband and I have plenty of experience with special needs pets. Our Tigger passed away at age 20 over the winter with diabetes and a past history of thyroid problems as well. Can you please contact me to discuss Noni's needs further? Thank you. Denise

Yay! thats great! If they dont contact you (though I hope they read this) I would definitely call them to make sure they know someone really wants to adopt her. (I just like everyone else would love to but already have 3 cats!)

did you get in touch with anyone at the ASPCA? try the adoption desk at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4900 because i doubt they read this page enough to respond directly to you. hope it works out!

My cat has hyperthyroidism and we had to pill her 2x a day, now with the right adjustment of her meds it's just once a day. The cat gets used to it and it really isn't that much of a bother at all. Those that are considering adopting her but aren't sure because of the medication, trust me it's not that big of a deal! The vet will show you how to properly pill the cat, and then if you reward them with something like brushing or (we feed her canned food right after) it just becomes routine. Thanks to those in the NY area that are willing to adopt her!

My cat, Riley, of 13 years was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. My vet was great, gave me all the information I needed to make an informative decision as to which of the three methods of treatment was best for Riley. After much research I decided to go with the only one with a permanent solution to the problem. Radioactive Iodine Treatment. I had to take Riley to a hospital that specialized in this treatment, it was $1000.00 and he had to stay there for one week. Riley is now 16 1/2 and living the good life ! No pills, no constant worries. He came back to his normal happy self after his week away. :-) I would recommend this treatment to anyone. http://www.radiocat.com/radioiodine-therapy.html

I would live to adopt this wonderful and sweet kitty. Any chance of a kitty trip to Alaska where I live?!

Is it possible to have radiation for Noni ? One of my cats had radiation for her thyroid about 4 years ago. It worked really well, but had a little trouble finding just the right food for her sensitive tummy. She is now eating Royal Canin duck & potatoe. She loves it & so does her tummy! Hoping the very best for Noni.

Did she find a home?

I live in chicago. how would i go about adopting noni?

i will take the cat n give it a forever home...i have 6 cats and 2 dogs

In Lewisburg, TN the only animal shelter is a small 20 dog capacity building. Last week they had 28 dogs on the premises. They were contacted about the adoption of 9 of these dogs. The were claimed for adoption. Unfortunately, the shelter, (knowing that the dogs were to be adopted within a matter of hours) decided to euthanize 13 dogs. All the 9 dogs claimed for adoption were killed. After receiving a small amount of media attention this shelter has vowed to euthanize all dogs every three days. Please sign this petition to demand investigation into this matter. https://www.change.org/petitions/we-demand-an-investigation-of-lewisburg-animal-shelter-s-practices# Thank you for your time.

This truly saddens my heart and sickens me beyond words. I want to be able to sign your petition but it was not a click able link from my phone. Can you send me the link please so I can sign it?

i would love to adopt this cute cat. i feel so bad for her.

I'm in Columbia, SC, and can help transport from/to NC, FL, GA.

I have a special place in my heart for tuxedos. When I adopted mine almost 5 years ago, I felt so incredibly blessed. She picked me by climbing up my leg and onto my back. So technically, she adopted/rescued me. I really hope someone can find it in their heart to adopt her, she looks a lot like my Mia. Please, someone give her a home. I would if I didn't have 4 cats already.

Also, can you imagine being in a shelter for that long? There are 365 days in a year, right? So she's been in the shelter for over a year?! That's like a human being in jail for over a year. I'm trying so very hard not to get emotional. There are people who have mentioned that they would love to give her a home. Please, I beg you, follow through and make it happen.

there is a person who is very willing to take this sweet cat. Many people are offering to help make it happen. So what's the hold up? Why haven't we heard this working out?

I live on Long Island and my son and I are interested in Noni. He is 6 and said too many people want babies and it wasn't fair so he wanted to adopt a cat that didn't have a home for a long time so he could make them happy :) My only question is the cost of care per month in regards to her medicine? But we are really interested!

Contact the number listed on this site for the ASPCA. Voice your concerns about vet care and cost of medication. I'm sure they'd be more then happy to give you whatever information you need. I've had pets w/ thyroid problems in the past, as well as diabetes. It sounds scarier then it actually is, trust me. But definitely call them, I'm sure they'll help you.

If you are really serious about adopting her, call (212) 876-7700, ext. 4900 i dont think the aspca reads this page and responds. you can call your local vet and ask about the cost of monthly medicine but normally i dont pay more than twenty to forty for an RX for my cats. no idea about this specific med though. but please contact the aspca if you would like to adopt her because she has been in this shelter for way too long!

If anyone is serious about adoption he/she must CALL the ASPCA. I've read enough of these threads to know that once they post they DO NOT check responses. They will never see a reply online. They will listen to you if you call. So, please, if anyone is serious call.

I'll help transport her. I live in DC. Just let me know. Please.

I don't know what direction y'all are taking, but I live in Lexington, KY if there needs to be a KY/VA hand off.

I played with her last weekend. She is a lovely girl~ I hope she find a sweet home soon just like my cats!

I will call tomorrow morning. Giving meds doesn't bother me. I just didn't want it to be something like 1-200$ a month as I couldn't afford that. So I will call tomorrow and make sure the meds aren't that expensive each month...

great! so happy to hear you are willing to take her.. wish we could but have too many cats. i doubt the meds will be anywhere near that much. please keep us updated!

Has she been adopted yet?
