Lacey, before and after receiving treatment at the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital

Lacey, before and after receiving treatment at the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital

When ASPCA Special Agent Ann Kelly brought hound mix puppies Cagney and Lacey to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital on February 17, the two were so skinny that their bones were visible from across the room.

The dogs’ owner, Gillian Irving, relinquished them to the ASPCA after Agent Kelly visited her home in the Norwood section of the Bronx. In April, Agent Kelly arrested Irving, who was charged with two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. (If convicted, Irving faces up to two years in jail and/or a $2,000 fine.)

Meanwhile, under the care of our veterinary professionals, the frightened dogs put on weight quickly: Cagney went from 16.4 to 27.1 pounds, and Lacey from 15.2 to 26.9, in the months leading up to Irving’s arrest.

As these shy puppies gained weight, they also made new friends among ASPCA staff and learned that new people weren’t so scary after all. At first, the dogs “would cower to the ground when they were removed from their kennels,” recalls ASPCA Senior Behavior and Training Manager Victoria Wells. “Once the vets gave the medical okay, they were paired up with each other and more confident dogs for play sessions and walks to expose them to new people and places. They slowly began to overcome their fear.”

They even made a special friend in Kim Danley, a licensed veterinary technician. When the dogs were ready to move to foster homes, Danley brought Lacey to the home she shared with her Rottweiler and ASPCA-alumnus cat, while Cagney went to another foster home.

As Danley invested lots of time in teaching Lacey that new people and places were exciting, not scary, Lacey became an irreplaceable member of the family. When Lacey was made available for adoption, Danley decided to make it official. She filled out the paperwork and renamed her Frankie.

Since then, the Danley family has moved to California, where Frankie loves running on the beach, sunbathing on her deck and taking boat rides. Danley reports that “now she’s the happiest dog in the world. She and Charlie sleep curled up with each other every night. She’s not afraid of a thing.”

Looking to be a special dog’s happy ending, like Danley was for Frankie? Adopt Cagney! She’s still waiting for her special someone, and she’d love a dedicated adopter with another confident dog at home.

There are other dogs up for adoption but no Cagney. I hope this means that she has found a home.

We had 3 rescues until just about a week ago when one had to be Euthanized due to cancer and a burst spleen at age 13. Rescues take a bit of time to feel comfortable with their new digs, and their new humans, but once they do, they really don't care what you call them. I agree with an earlier comment, that they will respond to anything based upon your tone of voice and looking at your facial expression and gestures. People shouldn't worry about this trivial stuff. Go out and rescue a pet, give them love, get lots of love and joy in return. Nothing beats getting to share your home with 4 legged family members. They don't need IPhones, or Nikes or concert tickets. They just want you to give them some attention, make sure they get healthy nutritious food, plenty of fresh water, lots of walks outside and rides in your car, and of course ongoing well care from your veterinarian. You love your kids, and you love your pets. They all deserve the best you can give them, even when the best is different things. Your kids have nicknames, your pets can have many nicknames. They certainly aren't hung up about calling them Fred or Champ or YoYo or anything else, as long as you call them!

I volunteer at the Humane Society in Tampa, Fla, & the staff there gives new names to I believe all the rescues, not sure about the surrenders. I agree with some of the posters, if there's even a chance that a rescue knows the name the abuser gave them, it's better to rename them. I adopted a kitten from there back in 05, not abused but just part of an 'oops' litter. The staff had named her Mystic, but even tho I used it dozens of times while feeding, petting, playing with her, after a week she still didn't know her name, so I changed it to Midnight - she knew her name & responded when called within a couple of hours! She just didn't like the name 'Mystic'...

Dogs can be as smart as a 2-year old child plus they are quick to learn. So renaming Lacey to Frankie won't be as difficult, compared to being abused. It's better for Lacey to forget her past and move on trusting people.

Lovely, sweet pups. Hope the law prosecutes this woman abuser to the fullest sentence they can give her. Also make her pay monetarily for the upkeep and care that those pups have received. Certainly hope she gets more than a slap on the wrist for being such a horrific person. Pray she DOES NOT have kids !! Thank God the pups were rescued when they were, else they would have surely died. Thanks ASPCA, for your care of animals.

Are people in the Northeast just plain cruel. Sounds like you have more incidents there than anywhere else. These people need to be treated like they treated their animals. Let them know the pain and hunger and cruelty.

I am in rescue, and I can tell you the northeast does not have the record for abuse. It is horrific everywhere in this country. It's just that some places get reported in the media more. The ASPCA is in New York so you hear about alot of abuse from that area.

What a wonderful ending to these puppies....a whole new life. What a terrible early life they endured. Please, the former owner needs to be punished, and never allowed to have any more of god's little creatures ever again. The look in the eyes of these now happy animals is of security and new found love....My blessing to the rescuers and adoptive parents...

Respect for animals !

Im always lifted in my heart and mind when I see their are goooood people in this world who go the distance to sacrifice their time and love and money, to benefit another living being whether human or animal, two thumbs way up, thanks for the smile :)

After reading several comments, I agree that changing the animal's name might be beneficial. I hadn't looked at it that way before. As the animal learns his new name, he would come to associate it with a positive experience.

Thank you ASPCA for the wonderful work you do!! Reading these success stories really restores my faith in people. So many stories of neglect and abuse in this world is so disheartening, I love hearing cases that give a second chance at happiness and love. Thank you!

I agree with the name change, but, on the other hand I also think it isn't always the name that has to be changed, I would think it's the way it is said that may frighten the dog more than the initial word spoken.

I agree with those who think a name change can be a positive thing. My X was extremely abusive and being stuck with his last name would have been very depressing, so I changed it back to my maiden name, which I LOVE. And I believe it can be the same with animals.......new name, new happy life!!

Don't dogs live in the moment anyway. I think renaming a dog is a human thing; all the dog wants and needs is love, discipline and food and shelter.

Those poor dogs, I'm so glad one has found its forever after home, and hope that the other will very soon. I renamed three cats whom I adopted years ago. The mother, daughter and son were named, respectively, Missy, Rat (she was very small) and Nig (he was black). How offensive those names were, and these were beautiful, loving, sentient beings. I renamed them Tiffany, Shalimar and Bartholomew on the theory that kitties grow into the names that you give them. And they did!

PS: When he was five years old Julian moved in with me from across the street. His original human didn't actively abuse him, but pretty much ignored him when he was no longer a kitten. (Never took him to the vet, fed him only when he saw him, didn't care when cat came home bloodied from fighting since he hadn't been neutered.) If I heard his original name, I forgot it. Now his name is Julian, and he is emporer of this house. At night he sleeps with his head on the pillow next to mine. He knows he is much loved.

Thank God for the Aspca. When I see a mistreated animal, I just want to take the law into my own hands. I just can't understand how people can be so cruel and heartless. Every animal responds to love and compassion. Infact, my dog, Shadow has taught me about unconditional love. Our 2 dogs, and our 2 cats are so loved and pampered and most of all, very respected. I wish with all my heart, that people would learn the correct ways of taking proper care of their pets, and not abuse them as so many people do. I truly believe, the punishment should fit the crime when it comes to abusing an animal. Make them go through exactly how they treated the dog or cat, or any other animal.

So thankful for these rescues. They saved starving Wonderful unconditional dogs! This World should be educated in school on how to treat people and animals. People are sick and should not be allowed to have loving unconditional animals if they aren't going to properly feed and care for them! They are finding a lot of Dog fighting rings now maybe through satelites that can see what is going on places! Which is great! Great work and yes change this dogs name to a sweet loving new name! =)

The most important thing is that the ASPCA rescues dogs like this and others, nurses them back to health, and finds them a kind, loving home, where they will be happy, well cared for and well fed for the rest of their lives. If they are given them a new name, they will acclimate. I'm glad to see my monthly contribution dollars are well spent on dogs like these. Woof!!!!

Hopefully he will get ALL the time allowed....what a jerk he must be...

Hi, I'm very happy to hear that the 2 dogs are doing well after what they went threw unfortunately !!!!!!!!!! Some people just shouldn't get animals if there NOT going to take care of them !!!!!!!!!

So glad this turned out to be a happy ending for these these two precious ones after all the suffering they went through. Thank you for saving them.

a happy ending for one pup, i hope the other gets adopted soon too...my heart breaks when I hear of animal abuse :-(

The original name is their "Slave Name"!!! Of course you change it!!!

Show them love and attention. The rest will simply follow. Regardless of the past, they will respond accordingly to their "name".

people, get a grip! You can call me anything. just don't call me late for dinner!

What a great story!!It's so good to hear stories with happy endings!!Beautiful animals!!

We adopted a shelter dog in November and my son gave him a new name, which he responds to greatly, and it's a new chapter in his life!!His name was Pistol(he's from Texas)and now it's Sparky,he's a Jack Russell/Beagle mix!

THANK GOD FOR PEOPLE LIKE YOU THAT HELP THESE POOR ANIMALS,BUT IT WOULD OF BEEN NICE IF CAGNEY AND LACEY COULD OF STAYED TOGETHER WHEN ADOPTED.

PLEASE DEAR GOD put IRVING IN JAIL OR HELL !! Those are beautiful dogs WHY ???? in the world would she do that to those dogs why not ask for help !! She is one SORRY human !! If she really is a human !!

Didn't they say in the article that Cagney went to a good foster home? Then why does it say that anyone is welcome to adopt Cagney and that she's still looking for a home?

She is beautiful!!!

Renaming is a great idea! In December '11 I renamed my rescued 14 yr old toy Poodle Patrick, and he responded immediately. He was given up for 1) not cute anymore and 2) too much of a hassle to take care of. He's 14, almost blind, 2 teeth, and the scrawniest little munchkin ever. He's in a "relationship" with my rescued 11 yr old Black Lab. I don't know what happened to him before he decided to let 'me live with him', but his fearful behavior showed it wasn't happy. I started calling him Patrick, and he changed completely and became the Alpha Dog!

Great to see a happy ending for this sweet dog.

This is great news about the pups. The problem we have is that our county won't do anything about animal abuse and neglect. When my group found two starving dogs, a starving cat, and two hutches filled with dead rabbits that died in the hot sun with no food or water and we took pictures, the ASPCA would do nothing. We even had pictures, owner name, address, everything. We rescued the dogs and cat. The rabbits were animals too and it is right that those people got off scott free from what they did to those poor little rabbits. I don't have much faith in the ASPCA

I honestly think their previous owners, who neglected them that much, hardly ever called them by their name anyway. I think a new name could help the animal associate good feelings so much more easily.

Hello my name is Florencia, I'm from Argentina, I really wanted to congratulate you for the great work they do! It fills my soul to know that there are people so good with animals and especially that they respect them! I always see the ASPCA program in home & health. Congratulations with all my heart, keep it up! <3

NOW LET ME SAY THIS, DO NOTTTTTTTTT, EVEY LOOK AT A DOG MUCH LESS OWNING ONE IF YOU CANNOTTTTTTTTTTTTT TAKE CARE OF IT. A LOVING DOG, AND ANY PET FOR THAT MATTER DO NOTTTTTTTTTTT DESERVE TO BE TREATED, NEGLECTED, HURT, ABUSED, LEFT TO DIE, ABANDON, USED FOR SPORTS FOR AN EVIL BASTARDS PLEASURE. I'M SO GLAD THERE ARE PEOPLE LIKE ME LEFT IN THE WORLD THAT WILL DO ANYTHING FOR OUR FOUR LEGGED FRIENDS. AFTERALL, THEY WERE HERE BEFORE HUMANS SO RESPECT THEM. THANK YOU TO ALL THE ANIMAL LOVERS AND HELPERS OUT THERE THAT HAS HELPED TO BRING ANIMALS BACK TO HEALTH AND PUT INTO LOVING HOMES.
