Neglected Senior Dog Needs a Hero!

Adopt Britney ASPCA Senior Dog

Not every visitor to the ASPCA Adoption Center in NYC sees something special in Britney, but a local artist did. Whoever adopts this sweet senior gets to take home a beautiful portrait of their new dog!

The artist chose Britney to paint instead of the hundreds of other animals in our care, and we think we know why. Britney’s life has been so hard.

When she came to us through Humane Law Enforcement last year, Britney was in lots of pain, suffering from multiple untreated conditions. But with ASPCA veterinary care and attention, she is now as healthy as possible. In her opinion—and ours—Britney is ready to find her forever home.

For now, Britney spends her days quietly sleeping in her habitat until it’s her turn to be walked. She seems to know that she doesn’t belong here. And yet, it’s been more than 200 days since she came to us. (Only one dog has been with us longer: Lady.)

Britney is not a difficult dog to care for. At 12, this low-key lady loves everyone she meets and wants nothing more than to sleep peacefully in a comfortable spot in a loving home. She’s good on walks, though she does bark at other dogs she meets along the way, and often lags behind to take in the scenery.

But Britney does need special food (at least for now) and twice-daily arthritis medication, likely for the rest of her life. That’s why she needs a really special adopter to make her golden years golden.

If you live in a six-and-up home and have a special place in your heart for seniors, this sweet Lab gal really needs you! She’s been through so much. Please share her on Facebook and Twitter, and help us give her a happy ending!

To adopt Britney, please contact our Animal Placement department in NYC at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4900.

If i had not already adopted an older dog I would have loved to have her.. Mineis a shepard mix and i'd love to tell people that adopting an older or senior dog is well worth any extra time it may take. they are sometimes the better choice then a younger dog. PLEASE give them a chance. you won't regret it, I PROMISE you.

You are absolutely right Brenda. The best thing I ever did was adopt Gracie a 12y/o chihuahua. She lived until 16 y/o and I miss her so much!

I have been waiting for an update on Britney. Just saw this. I would love to take care of her and spoil her I have 2 active Scottys. The only problem is I live in California. I have no problem with her needing medication. I took care of my 2 elderly dogs needing medications before they passed on. If adoption is not possible I would like to contribute to her care. Please let me know what I can do for her.

http://www.facebook.com/TheJesseTreeInc#!/pilotsnpaws These guys will fly the dog anywhere within the US (I think). Contact them it may be worth a try. I've heard nothing but great things about this group.

I will give them a call. I would love to add Britney to my 4-legged family.

Hi Rose, I live in California as well! I would love to help out if you are able to bring her out here. I have an elderly dog at home who is not a fan of other dogs.. so I am unable to adopt. but if any financial help is needed to find her a good home I'd love to help!

I have 2 senior dogs and 4 senior cats! My eldest is 15, almost 16, and special needs, I got her about a year and a half ago... her life was not good before the rescue group saved her. She is living up her golden years happily with me in California... I would love to help with Britney as well. Let me know what I can do to help if you Californians are flying her out/ adopting her.

Pilots and Paws is a great organization, just read a book about them, A Dog is My Copilot. They really make some amazing things happen and they transport a lot of special needs cases.

im a cross country truckdriver. i would be more than happy to help transport any dogs to new homes. i have a 16 yr old yorkie that takes meds for same thing. my number is 573-208-8244 leave message if i dont answer as i work all hours

You are so sweet i really hope they let you have her i have four or i would try she looks like she could use a lot of love just want to let you no you are a sweet heart

I live in Tampa Florida and have no way of adopting Britney but if there is anything I can do to help with her care let me know.

I would like to contribute to her care or for her transport to her forever home. Is there a place where I can send a donation?

I would love to adopt her but live in MI. If someone could get her to me, I would welcome her with open arms.

I too live in CA and would like to help. I would adopt her in a heartbeat as well. Any suggestions? I assume Britney cannot be shipped to CA? Please let me know. jill.ort@gmail.com

There are many ways to get a dog to any location across the country, so don't use that as an excuse not to adopt. No disrespect intended, but it can be done. Bless you all.

It’s really a nice and helpful piece of information. I’m glad that you shared this helpful info with us. Ps. Thanks for sharing.

Marguerite, it is not easy to transport an animal, especially a senior. Tell me what ways you are talking about that a dog (a senior dog) can be safely transported, other than in a car and how likely is the ASPCA or a Humane Society to allow this animal to be transported across country? I know the Humane Society I worked for would not allow a transport of an animal unless it was going to to a rescue organization or another Humane Society. So, Marguerite, not being in NY to get this precious dog IS a good excuse. NY is a big place. Is there no one in NY who can give this girl a home?

I would take her as well, but am in Missouri. You cannot tell me there isn't someone in that area to take this poor girl!

I love you Britney...God Bless You Sweet Baby I live in Florida and have four dogs...I would love to have you

Most organizations can help get a dog to any location across the country. Dogs can be relayed from one location to another. Don't let your location stop you from adopting because it can be done.

Will Britney be allowed in a home with two other loving dogs? I would like to take her - in her bio it says that she barks at other dogs. Is this just a regular old bark or is she aggressive towards other dogs? I would love to give her a forever home.

I am in North Dakota, cared for a dog with diabetes who got 5 extra years of life, but I have a pair of 3 year old boxer/Great Danes, how do you think she would do with them....

I love how everyone is willing to help. It is so refreshing to see decent people posting beautiful comments. I too live in Florida with 4 rescued cats and 1 rescued dog. If she was closer to me I would make an effort to see what we could do but from the post I have been reading I have a good feeling she will find a wonderful forever home very soon. Good Luck sweetie!

I have adopted several senior dogs over the years. They are more than AWESOME. They are housebroken. They are smart. And, they have better manners than I do. I have a 13 yr old female chow mix - - she is so georgous and appreciative and a 10 yr old Sheltie mix who spent 2 months at the City Pound.., He wound up there because his first guardian died. He's a perfect pet!

I would love to contribute to this sweet baby. Is there a direct way to give to her fund for transportation/medication?

i would take her,i have 2 dogs already but id be glad to keep her for the rest of her days,i cant pay for her to come here but if there was a way to get her here?

If a fund is being set up for transportation for this beautiful senior dog I would be interested in helping in some way of a donation. Please let me know if she will be traveling to her forever home and some help is needed. I can't take her but would absolutely would love to. Please let me and I see others know. Thanks Tammy in Wisconsin

If I were in NYC I would take her. I have a huge yard fenced in here, I live in Tampa. If there were a way to get her here. Otherwise I HOPE someone takes her.It breaks my heart she doesn;t have a home.

how would i go about adopting this ol girl?

I live in Chicago. I would love to adopt her if there was a way to get her here. I would give her lots of love and a good home.

I see that many people are willing to give her a home, but were unsure of transportation to another city. It looks like there is a company that will transport her for them. Has she been adopted yet?

Has she been adopted yet? We have a 13 year old lab mix who looks just like Brittany. Our Maggie is also on a special diet and takes all types of medications. I am a nurse and would have no problem meeting her special needs. We live just outside of Atlanta.

i wish i could adopt oh such a lovely dog such a sweetheart

Can a new picture of Britney be posted. She is so beautiful!

What are the options for Britney to be adopted in Europe (costs, legal, vaccins etc.)?

Does she get along with other dogs? I have 3 rescues, and one is 16 1/2 years old. I adopted her when she was already 9 years old.

I Live In Ga I will give her a home, can you get her here. I have four other dogs. 16yr old, 2-8yr olds, and a 2yr old. all these dogs I found or was given to me.

Please keep me updated. I want to help but am not able to adopt her now.

I wish I could have a big house to adopt her! She is so adorable. I love dogs!

Wow, briteny looks like a great little pup and looks easy to care for. I found an app which might help out with this little girl its called Pet minder and its for android. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.IES.PetMinderLite&hl=en

Wow with all the help thats going out was just wondering if she was adopted out. havent seen anyone from aspca respond.

I would love to adopt Britney I lost my senior Ruby that had adopted her when she was about 10, I have a little 10+ year old Chihuahua and i would love to take her into my family of one senior cat and dog. Is she still availale? Please let me know please I am serious, Sharon Lynch

Has Britney found a home? I have a senior dog Katie who is very sweet and loving. I think maybe they could become friends. My husband and I live in Westerville, Ohio 43081. I only work two days a week over night and there is almost always someone home. I have a fenced in yard and Katie knocks on the door to go in and out whenever she wants. I'm a NICU nurse so I feel that I could take really good care of her. (614)832-3088. Call me if she is available. Take Care, Candis James

I am doing a school research paper to show how heartless people abandon their pets , which end up at the " Humane Society " and are Euthanized....please send me the figures for the number of animals Euthanized during the years 2008 through 2011 , Please send this information as quickly as possible this paper is due in two weeks, please send as an e-mail to assure speedy delivery.Thank you very much for any information you can provide....have a great day...Karl Bremer

I am willing to contribute to any transportation costs. She deserves a good home that will take care of her and love her. I would take her myself but my future is uncertain. I hope that she finds a forever home for the rest of her forever.

Sad that this turned into wanting an A on a paper versus saving a dog's life.

I live in NJ and can provide her a home. Perhaps we can discuss living situation over the phone. Please email me. I have a 4 year old rescue who is very relaxed and laid back. If possible, I could bring her to meet and make sure they get along!! :)

What does 6-and-up home mean? I'm assuming it means children 6 & up? My daughter is only 16 mo. If I'm wrong about this assumption my family may be interested in adopting...

I live in Maine, but I see so many generous loving folks who are willing to transport her. I had to put down my dog of 14 yrs last fall, and would love a senior dog! my children are 17+20, but I have cats, I wonder how she is with cats? Since I had a dog, my cats are very dog-savvy :)
