ASPCA Rescues 50 Dogs in Bronx Dog Fighting Case

Puppy Rescued By Humane Law Enforcement

Nearly 50 dogs, ranging in age from 12 weeks to five years, were found yesterday living in the windowless basement of a six-story apartment building in the Bronx. The space, which served as a makeshift dog fighting arena, was littered with crude wooden cages and had the capacity for roughly 100 spectators. Raul Sanchez, the building’s superintendant, was taken into custody and charged with animal fighting, a felony.

Working closely with the NYPD Vice Enforcement Division and the Bronx District Attorney's Office, our team played a critical role in the rescue of the dogs, forensic evidence collection and on-scene documentation.

Also discovered on scene were a loaded .25-caliber handgun, U.S. currency, and other equipment associated with dog fighting—including dog treadmills, harnesses, muzzles, syringes and a shopping cart full of raw chicken parts.

"Organized dog fighting is a brutal form of animal abuse where dogs are exploited and forced to fight as their owners profit from their torture," says Howard Lawrence, Senior Director of Operations for the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement. "The dogs we saw today exhibited scarring and injuries consistent with fighting dogs. We’re determined to protect New York City's animals from this form of cruelty."

The dogs, many of whom showed scars from fighting, were transported to a temporary shelter for further evaluation by our emergency response medical team. The ASPCA will continue to provide legal support to the Bronx District Attorney's Office to help prosecute the case.

The investigation is ongoing.

I mean why would people do this to innocent animals. The people that did that should be tortured, die and rot in hell. I feel really strongly about animal abuse and we want it to stop. Even though animals don't have voices they should get help that why I love the ASPCA and people who save the animals. I am a animal lover and will always be. Thanks ASPCA for saving the dogs.

"tortured, die & rot in hell" - that sounds like what these animal abusers did - if you want to heal an abused dogs you let them know that they are loved & secure - if want to heal an abused human you let them know they are loved & secure - love heals - vengeance is for the weak - searay

to people reading this, go to www.facebook.com/justiceforwyatt to see story. A kitten in Erie, PA was brutally tortured by a group of kids. kicked, tossed high into the air and hitting cement. He had a punctured lung, sprained back and brain damage. No arrests. We have started a petition to the President to get these laws changed for all animal abusers. It has gone across the country because of sharing. Please take the time to go there and sign to stop all abuse and let little Wyatt's tiny cries be heard. Thank You

nice job deleting comments compassion/rehab for dogs & humans - it is proof that your organization is mainly interested in stirring up hatred so that you can motivate people to donate - love heals dogs that have been fought & love heals humans that fight them - you can't delete the truth - love heals all - searay

What in the world, those poor little puppies! I'll never understand how people could be so mean to one of God's beautiful creatures.

Thank you ASPCA for all your hard work to protect animals!

Glad dogs were rescued and not be destroyed. Thank you all. Hope the the people involved are prosecuted to the max when found guilty and serve as an example for behavior not excepted in the USA.

Let us all return to the protection of our neighbour. If our neighbor is threatened, then we take out the threat. Dogs are mans best friend and closest neighbor. If you know someone who sponsors a dog fight, KILL THEM immediately. I urge you to do it. Your contribution to a safe society for animals won't be forgotten.

Just wanted to put to respond to anyone who thought these rescued dogs were immediately sent to a "kill" shelter. First, all dogs have to be medically evaluated and treated as they are "evidence" of a possible crime. Then they will be evaluated behaviorally to see what type of future home they will be able to go to.

I come in here to find facts and see people's comments. To see it turn into a theological debate really bothered me. Most of the comments had to do with that vs. the animals being rescued, etc. People are getting way too thin-skinned. I have my own beliefs and try to never bring them into a public forum unless forced to. Everyone has their own facets to life and "being" and we need to allow them that. It hurts no one in the case of "thanking God" or NOT thanking God....it's an individuals preference and right. So just let it go - stop looking for a fight.

Our tax dollars fund some shelters and animal ctl officers. Why can't lawmakers get rid of the cruel and inhumane treatment of puppymills and backyard breeders everywhere? Are we third world? We need to stop the insanity band focus our attention on rebuilding america but how can we when we have to police animal abuse? Get laws in place to get rid of these facilities at puppymills

Just because someone did something terrible and cruel like abuse an animal, it doesn't mean that they don't deserve a second chance to be forgiven. Hey, I hate it too when an animal is abused in any way, but God forgives everyone who asks for forgiveness. No one on this planet deserves to be shot for anything they have done, just put in their place and punished. God gave everyone free will, and should not be responsible for the mistakes that humans make. But hey, let's just forget about this whole thing and focus on the animals!:)

Do you know what totally makes me want to cry? Cruel cat breeders! Cats are my favorite animals and I totally hate it when I hear stories about cruel cat breeders. There was this one who kept the Siberian kittens enclosed in a corner with couch cushions, walking around in their own litter. So terrible! This is one of the main reasons why I am trying so hard to adopt a Siberian kitten from a breeder that Iv'e looked in to.

PEOPLE get off the "GOD" comment, and stick to the topic at hand! Let's focus on what we need to do to be proactive when it comes to neglect and abuse of animals. Thank-you!

i would like to know the outcome of this case, what happens to these fighters now, and will happen to the pups? i will donating to help............

Will the be adopted?

Can you give us an update on the status of the dogs that were seized.

Too many times have I heard of these kinds of things happening. First and foremost I'm hoping that they can rehabilitate and save these dogs so that they can go to good homes and finally feel LOVE. Second, I hope those responsible will pay for what they've done. Those 2 things are what's really important, questioning life is irrelevant.

Detroit Rapper Shows Off His Dog Fighting Operation www.lifewithdogs.tv Detroit rapper Calicoe recently offered a video tour of his pad, and provided a look at his prized dog fighting operation in the process. PLEASE INVESTIGATE AND REMOVE THESE ANIMALS. The Pit Bulls are neglected and kept in horrible conditions. They are underweight and starved for affection. Roosters kept in dark cages as well. Abominable!!! PLEASE HELP!!!

look people instead of complaining about someone saying thank god, why don't you go out and do something. you say you hate that this stuff happens to animals, but in the time it took you to right your hate comment to someone else you could have done something productive that could help a poor defenseless animal. this isn't about religion, it's about the animals. so get over yourselves and join together to help these poor creatures. be their voice and speak out for them!

HOORAY....Who ever ratted them out deserves a reward.....Then maybe more people will speak up.

Hi, I live in the Bronx and I heard about this story after speaking with sister about a heart wrenching experience I had this morning. I was walking home from work and saw this man walking the cutest little pit bull, the little pup looked happy as can be taking a stroll, (he was the same colors as the ones from these pics) so I stopped and said, "what a cute dog!" in which the man rudely replied, "I don't want anyone approaching him" and aggressively pulled the dog and walked away. I was so upset and knew something was terribly wrong. I should have called the cops but was in shock so I called me sister who told me about this story. What can I do for this dog if I see this man again?!!!

most of my family loves dogs to the point that we will do what it takes to keep them safe and if that means telling some on that the have to watch there dog when he or she vists becuse or dog dose not like thier dog of vis a versa

A big thank you to the boys in blue for doing a fantastic job. Keep up the good work fellas!!!!

This is amaxeing how much the ASPCA helps put these abandoned or miss treated animals i admire all of the Workers.

This dogs are ruined for life. They can never be trusted around other pets, children, strangers. They can't go to "dog town", they will kill the other dogs. I wouldn't have an ex-fighting dog in my house. Or take it to the dog park or dog beach. There is nothing to do with them. They are the casualties the war we fight against sociopaths. It's heartbreaking, but true. These dogs are now evidence in a felony investigation. They can't be saved. But no more puppies will be bred. And a dog fighting ring was shut down. The ASPCA does good work. I don't agree with everything they do, just as I don't Peta and Greenpeace, but at least they facilitate change. Millions of animals and ppl die un-natural deaths everyday. No welfare oranization can be 100% perfect 100% of the time.

I counted 76 felony charges/counts. So why would this guy get only four years as a maximum sentence? This is not nearly enough.

I hope these people who allowed and promoted such activities get exactly what they deserve....they need to lock them in a windowless basement with other monsters whio make them fight to the death! Thank goodness for organizations like ASPCA who follow through and find such monsters!!!!

The punishment should fit the crime!!!

Hi. I thank to the ASPCA and other organization for they great work. I am a sponsor and I love animals. But I do not understand people who are doing so criminal things to these animal. They were raised like that, what they saw in childhood-perhaps from parents- they do now. I do not understand this words: If is found guilty, he will be convicted???? Police has so much prove and they still think if he is guilty???? If I that the power. I will treat him exactly how he treat the dogs. He deserve this. Thanks again to all people who are doing a great job.. Lola(my dog's name)

Good job! Thanks for helping save them! :)

I hope people like him rot horribly

Raul Sanchez of Bronx should be imprisoned for a his life time. He is evil and will have to pay for what he has done to these helpless animals.

Thank you for your continued work in this field. Michael Vick not withstanding, this illustrate how this horrendous practice continues everywhere, crossing all socio-economic stata. We forget, that "all creatures, great and small" are also God's creation. I wish the individual apprehended would get a harsher sentence, at least four years for each dog that was found in his clutches. Reprehensible, immoral, horrific behavior.

I am so thankful for people like this being put in prison

I am shocked to read that many dogs were placed at the high kill shelter. I will not support nor donate to ASPCA anymore. I will set aside those funds for our own local animal shelter. This was very upsetting to read.

I just read that that many of the dogs rescued were dumped in a high kill shelter. That is not fair on the animal and certainly not saving the animal. I am not happy with what I have read and will not support ASPCA anymore. I will use my monthly donation for our own local animal shelters instead. Thank you for those who wrote this as this was not mentioned in the article.

I can't say what the practices are of the ASPCA but I can say I have proof that at least some were adopted, becuase I am now the proud owner of one of these bullies! He and a few others were given to a local animal welfare league finally this month, per the rescue league they came directly from the ASPCA, not a third party rescuer. I had to sign papers that the NY ASPCA can check on his welfare at any time, and that I am not giving him back to his original owner.

In my point of view, successful dog training is not only about getting your dog to understand you—it’s about how much you understanding your dog. Dog training will improve the relationship and interaction between you and the dog, once your dog was well trained, you will have fun with the dog.

i cant help but ask one question.. what the hell?!! poor babies! i cant believe people get a kick out of animals being used for their own fun.. and then they say some dogs are too agressive, well look at what these babies have been put through its their way of responding because some people do not know how to treat a animal! i hate it! there is a black gorgeous pitbull down my street that is loving and playful,, but is covered in scars from fighting.. it sadens me that a animal that just wants love and be accepted can be treated soo horribly! poor babies i hope they find good loving homes for them!

i dont think putting them in a killer shelter will help them anymore then them fighting. have you ever thought of how they think? maybe they think we dont love them.. maybe they think "im just going to be killed for something that was not my fault and just finding a way to stay alive" poor animals it breaks my heart that those babies could have been killed without a second glance...
