ASPCA Arrests Queens Woman for Neglecting, Starving Yorkie

Starving Dog

Hershey, before receiving treatment at the ASPCA's Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital

Today the ASPCA arrested Queens resident Grimilda Amil for allegedly neglecting and starving her three-year-old male Yorkshire terrier, who has been recovering under our care for nearly two months.

Amil brought her Yorkie, Hershey, to an ASPCA Mobile/Spay Neuter Clinic on June 27. Alarmed at Hershey’s condition, Clinic staff called our Humane Law Enforcement Agents, who quickly responded.

Amil relinquished ownership of Hershey to the ASPCA, and Agents transported the tiny dog to Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital.

There, veterinarians determined Hershey— whom they found to be emaciated, anemic and suffering from pressure sores—had been starved. At that time, Hershey weighed just 5.2 pounds. Today he weighs in at 10.1 pounds, a 94% increase!

Hershey is completing his recovery in a caring ASPCA foster home. When he’s ready, he’ll be made available for adoption.

Amil, 55, was charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. If convicted, she faces up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. She is due in Queens Criminal Court on October 4.

If you suspect you’ve witnessed animal cruelty, please don’t hesitate to report it.

This bitch needs to be made to starve now and let her rot in jail for a long time with no amenities. There is NO excuse for this!!! Hershey needs to be fed, cared for, and PAMPERED LIKE ROYALTY. Anyone who makes a poor animal suffer in any way needs to suffer in return. Pamper Hershey now and hug him!!!!!

Put her in jail nd leave her there w/out food for awhile. She should never be able to own another animal.

There is NO excuse for this. I agree that more severe punishments for abuse are in order, and people who do such things should be banned under additional penalty from ever owning animals again. My husband and I own a Japanese Chin and a Miniature Poodle - both spayed females - who are literally like our children. A few years ago we lost our business and virtually everything we owned. Although times are still hard, we are just now beginning to recover - throughout all of the hard times, our babies have been our constant companions. When things were so hard that we literally did not know if we were going to be able to eat, we ALWAYS made sure that our babies had food before we fed ourselves. I don't expect any special kudos for that - it seems like the only thing to do if you truly love your animals! They depend on us entirely and I would rather suffer myself than see them go hungry. Owning a pet is a commitment for life, and, similar to children since they are unable to provide for their own needs it seems that that commitment dictates that we must see to their comfort before our own NO MATTER WHAT. How could anyone do less for all the selfless, unconditional love that they give in return? It's just heartbreaking to see a beautiful creature like Hershey abused like this.

That poor baby, an eye for an eye. Let Amil know what it feels like to be starved.

I amgoing to be very severe. Starve the owner, deny the owner any special priviliges, and if that doesen't work......kill the bastard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is continually stated that others do not know why owners do this. Why not ask them in order to find out ? It will carry on for ever if the public, and the courts make no effort to find out. Also agree to a publication of names and addresses of all convictions. Without such action these mindless individuals will continue their appalling behaviour for all time, and the fault is partly ours unless WE do something about it.

forget the fine - jail the bitch!!!!

She needs to be punished more than thousand dollars! Community service in a aspca for a thousand hours nd even that is not enough for starving n innocent animal!

I always believed that animal abusers should suffer the same fate they inflict on animals. It's good to know others feel the same way! An eye for an eye, then maybe we won't see an increase in this abusive behavior.

That poor baby . . . someone needs to take his owner and starve her the way she starved him.

Why? What kind of person watches while their animal companion starves?

I don't know about this case, but the owners are so often a 300 pounder who would never skip a meal or a snack themselves.

Myself, I have a harder time trying to keep my dogs and cats from getting fat. I have a hard time saying no to treats and what not when they beg. Starving is one thing my pets will never know.

The laws for such a horible crime shoud me so much more savere.

Can someone PLEASE help me understand the charges.... One count of misdemeanor animal cruelty? Is this woman mentally handicapped or the judge!!! This poor little baby couldn't fix himself something to eat, couldn't put medication on his wounds, and couldn't tell anyone he was being neglected and starved...To the judge over-seeing this case, Hershey and his friends would like to know how this could possibly be considered a misdemeanor? If this happened to you,(judge)or someone close to you, would you be ok with misdemeanor charges against the person that did this!! REMEMBER WE ARE THE VOICES FOR THESE BABIES, IF WE DON'T SPEAK OUT AND HELP PROTECT THEM, THEY END UP WITH PEOPLE WHO DON'T LOVE THEM AND JUDGES WHO DON'T CARE ENOUGH TO SEE PAST MISDEMEANOR.

I can see all who made comments are animal lovers. How about 1yrs/1000.00 for every pound the baby was underweight. Bread and very little water will help also. Someone needs to get serious on the Animal Cruelty punishment. Someday people will wake up and find out it is not a game

That woman in my opinion should live in the most impverish conditions where just a scrap of bread would be a meal and see how she likes it! I find it disgusting how someone can be so inhumane to a defenseless little animal. May Karma bite her in her worthless Ass!

I agree with other comments about stricter penalties for animal abuse!

Animal cruelty should be handled EXACTLY like if it was someone starving their child! How is this just one year jail time? I don't get it. Animal abuse is just like child abuse. They are all innocent and defenseless. People like the lady in this story make me sick.

Animals should never be intentionally harmed but this individual may have been mentally unstable or manic depressive and possibly unfit to care for an animal. Don't just go spouting off that someone should be starved and the punishment should fit the crime. That sounds ignorant and nasty. I do not approve of the ASPCA informing the public of where and when this woman will be in court. She could be suicidal or a drug addict and an angry mob showing up at a court hearing to harass a possibly mentally unstable or sick woman isn't the solution to anything. The point is to rehabilitate the animal and find a proper loving home for it. Don't create more negativity. Do something positive instead.

Put the idiot in jail, with no chance of parole, community service and parole for ten years, prohibit ever owning another animal, mandatory monthly contribution to a shelter, and I can't think of anything else right now. Stupid, stupid.

Why? If she didn't want to feed the poor little dog why didn't she take him to the shelter or give him to someone who would take care of him? This is a cruel person who should be imprisoned.

Agree totally with both comments above. This lady needs to be locked in a cage and starved to death. Yes we need way tougher punishment for animal abusers. The officials are WAY too lenient. If anything, they should be even tougher on animal abusers than they are on people. Animals are helpless, defenseless and sweet creatures.

I just CANNOT believe how people torment, starve, and hurt these sweet, beautiful animals who cannot fight back and just want to be loved and taken care of. this makes me so SICK. i hope this woman has to go to jail for a life sentence. this is NOT ok.

This just makes me sick!!!! I cannot believe that any human being can be so cruel to do something sick like that! I hope she never ever is allowed to adopt or go anywhere near a pet again!!!! She makes me sick! I hope bad things come to her. She deserves the same done to her!!!!!!!

I hope this person gets the punishment she deserves by neglecting and starving a poor defenseless animal that depends on the love of its owner to take care of it.

Thanks to movie stars and celebs such as Paris Hilton , too many women are gettings little dogs for the wrong reasons! They are not fashion accessories for your wardrobe!!! To me it's almost a form of abuse as well when I see younger women or older carrying around these poor little dogs in their purses and bags... It's horrible! To buy or adopt a dog for any other reason than to give it LOVE & Companionship is wrong. Its something we shouldn't be seeing! Mabye this woman thought by getting herself a dog she would be like the celebs and stars she reads of in magazines... But I hope I'm wrong.Did Hershey get too big for her purse and that's why he was not fed!?! Did she figure in her morbid mind of hers by trimming his weight she could again carry him around like a doll!? I really would like to see this fad or whatever you want to call it END! I whole heartily agree with the person that suggested paying ASPCA money every month she had the little guy. I believe in Karma, and I wish someday this comes full circle for these types of people in some way or another. Animals are helpless and can't really say what they need, but it's our job to know if we choose to be their owners to care for them like we would like to be cared for. If I had to choose feeding myself or feeding my dogs, my dogs would eat Everytime .I don't know what I would do without their love... I know I could lose a few pounds lol.I'm very happy that the people at ASPCA recognized this little guys pain... You can see it in his face and eyes. Thank you ASPCA for your dedication and effort of rescue ,to put the smiles back on these animals faces. :)

I for one have never seen the point of carrying a dog in a purse. For one thing it's not getting any excercise if it's carried around all day, and for another thing the people who get them as "fashion accessories" most likely aren't giving them any kind of training which is can lead to problems down the line that most likely will result in the dog getting put to sleep just because some idiot didn't take the time to teach it what is acceptable and what isn't. On this matter, people just don't have any common sense these days. It doesn't take much common sense to know that a living creature needs at least food, water, and shelter. I mean geesh, if you need to eat then more than likely your dog needs to eat too. We have three dogs, six cats, three guinea pigs, and a gerbil and all of them get food and fresh water on a daily basis. The cats have dry food out around the clock and get one can divided between them in the evenings, the three dogs get fed twice a day (the labs get dry in the morning and half a can at night, the dachshund is on pure dry food), and my guinea pigs get a small amount of pellets in the morning, unlimited hay, and fresh veggies in the evenings. I'm with the other person who said their pets never have to worry about starving; I mainly have to worry about if everyone is getting enough excercise.

The person about the Yorkie should be fined at least $5000and 18 months in jail. If we do not make the laws strick, this will continue. Animals give only happiness and love. They shld get that in return..

I am so happy to see that so many other people believe like I do that animals deserve better than what most folks give them. That woman in Queens should be starved and put UNDER the jail! The poor Yorkie just wanted love, and I pray that he finally gets what he so richly deserves, this time around.

This should be a felony and every time I get an email from the ASPCA or the Humane Society to email your Congressman about animal issues I do so. All animals need our help.

We live in an extremely punish after-the-fact society; when anything goes wrong, we look for someone to blame and prosecute. All of this does nothing to prevent the behavior that we are punishing, costs taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars, and takes money that could be spent on education, adoption, spaying and neutering, etc. Of course, if someone takes such bad care of her or his pet(s) and cannot or will not change, then the animals need to be removed; but how many of these "rescued" animals go on to better homes and lives? I heard a local Humane Society adoption counselor once say that she would rather kill a dog than let him or her live tied up all the time -- I wondered, did she ever ask the dogs? My neighbor has a dog that spends almost his entire life on a ten foot rope and cannot even walk in circles; once in a while he gets let off to walk around the yard -- he's not very happy, but he doesn't want to die, and he's happy sometimes, when they occasionally give him attention. I thought of reporting him to the shelter, but if they took him because of neglect, they would kill him (he is old and large), so I give him attention and talk to him, and he wiggles with joy. If the shelter would help by encouraging these people to take better care of their dog instead of prosecuting them or taking him, I would report the situation. It's like child abuse -- more money is spent on punishing parents and taking away their children than is spent on education, financial/nutritional support, and respite care.

HOW MUCH COULD A YORKIE EAT? I MEAN YOU COULD PROBABLY FEED HIM FOR A MONTH FOR UNDER $5.00. IF YOU CAN'T FEED HIM, GIVE HIM AWAY. MY PETS WILL EAT BEFORE ME. LOCK UP THIS WOMAN AND ANYBODY WHO NEGLECTS OR ABUSES THEIR PETS. WE NEED TO SEND A MESSAGE THIS WON'T BE TOLERATED.

The laws should be strict with punishment for people like her. She starved the poor little thing, and may only spend 1year or $1,000.00 fine. These laws have to change as for her she should be left to starve and let her feel what poor little Hershey felt. Get well soon little Hershey you will find a loving home soon.

It is time that the laws are changed. We are the voice for the voiceless and loving animals.

I ask any all lbeings for a Most Benevolent Outcome, for both the dog and his owner in this case. She did at last bring the dog in for help. May whatever her penality teach her that all life is sacred, and may the terrier recover fully and be adopted into his perfect forever home! And I ask that all of this work out better than could possibly be expected or anticapated. Thank-you!

I have always said, the human should be dealt with the same way they did to the animal. I have a little 3 lb. Chorkie. It doesn't take much to feed her! Her food is a little expensive at $15 a bag. But the 5 lb. bag lasts her 4 months! I'm on a fixed income and it's really tight. But when she needs food, I take it out of my "food allotment" money, that's for me. As with my previous Chihuahua that I lost too early 4 yrs. ago, I always make sure she has food. Some people are just disgusting!

They really need to get tough on these miscreants who abuse animals, they need to be given the exact same treatment they did to a poor innocent creature. All the way to death. When is the making excuses going to stop? They arent "people" if they can do these things they ought to be wiped off the face of the earth. No use for these miscreants.

I think she should receive the maximum sentence possible and then given one grape each day as a meal, until she understands the severity of her neglect to this animal.

This woman should get more then a misdemedor for starving her 3 year old Dog Hersey.. More need's to happen to abuser's!!!!! Slap on the wrist for this poor Baby who was Starving!!!! Unexceptable...Law's need to Change!!!!! NOW!!!!!

Here in Terre Haute, IN you can shut up a dog in your bedroom, leave and live somewhere else for a month, come back after the dog is dead and only receive a slap on the wrist. I called the Office of Mayor Duke Bennett and he said it was not his jurisdiction. I knew the dog; a real friendly young female yellow lab. I am still angry.,

There s something terribly wrong with our system if all she gets is a $1000 fine.

the fines should be stiffer...and jail mandatory. but, beyond that...she should be starved. see how she likes it. wish I had a way to make a mean face on this post...

Fined, put in jail for years and never aloud to have any animals. Ever again

This was just a Misdemeanor, I cannot believe it. She will only get a slap on the wrist for starving an animal. That is no JUSTICE.

Only jail can avoid it, by educating bad people...

The Courts need to start punishing these abuse offenders more severely and never allow them to own any type of animal again!

This women should be prosecuted with the maximum penalty. Also she should not be allowed to "ever" own another animal "ever"!!
