Who'll Be the ASPCA's 2013 Calendar Cover Model? Cast Your Vote!

Thursday, August 23, 2012 - 11:30am

We're putting our 2013 calendar together right now, and staffers and volunteers representing all 12 months of the year have been photographed with their furry friends. There's only one big decision left to make, and we’re leaving the answer up to you: Who should grace the calendar’s cover?

We've narrowed down the field to four contenders. Check out the photos that are in the running, read a little about their sweet four-legged subjects, and then cast your vote for our 2013 Cover Dog or Cat. The pet whose photo gets the most votes will have his or her face in homes all over America!

Buddy

Zoom

Abandoned in Brooklyn, Buddy was rescued by an ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Agent. Soon this irresistible Terrier found his forever home with another member of our Anti-Cruelty team.

Maow & Bruce

Zoom

Cuddly siblings and BFFs Maow and Bruce were adopted from a tiny shelter in Rego Park, Queens. Maow is a dainty lady, while Bruce is an expert boxer.

Pooch & Schnogg

Zoom

Pooch survived a gunshot wound as a puppy and was adopted by a loving family that included big brother Schnogg. Now Pooch, the baby of the house, rules the roost.

Rocky

Zoom

Named for his favorite playing position (sitting on his back legs and using his front paws), Rocky is a fun-loving feline who keeps a close eye on his younger sister Lucy.

I already receive mail from the ASPCA. Thank you!

please note that the email address above is new and replaces my old address at rvansteen@hughes.net. I already receive email for ASPCA

I agree with the statement that all these pictures of these adorable, innocent animals should be in the calendar. Honor them, especailly where some of them have been really hurt and abused. Thank you

I like all of them.

Wish I could have chosen two. Love Buddy but also love the pic of Rocky!

I AGREE.

With all the negative publicity about pit bulls, it would be nice to have them featured the calendar, yes, along with a cat or two.

They deserve all the publicity - the breed should be banned. My neighbors pit dug under the fence which I have lined with rock to try to protect myself from them. He dug in by the gate in the middle of the night - when I walked out of the house with my 3 Chinese cresteds, he attacked and killed my 17 pound hairless, toothless defenseless male instantly. Then went for my Puf before I shot him!

Do not blame the breed. A good owner knows to train their dog NOT to attack. They were originally bred to be Nanny dogs to protect children. As a volunteer with a local spca I have met many pits and none of them were killers. If the breeders of that dog were not careful in their selection, maybe bad blood was bred into it but it is no reason to kill it. You should have notified the proper authorities when you noticed it was getting into your yard. I am sorry for your loss however and understand your anger but please do not blame the breed. Blame the owner.

The blame for this tragedy should go to the person who apparently confined the pit bull to a yard, and gave the dog no human contact. Dogs become aggressive when they aren't socialized. I have 2 pit bulls, both rescued as adults from abusive situations. They live in my home, along with cats I had rescued previously, and cats I have rescued long after the dogs lived here. I've never had a problem. My dogs sleep with the cats, even let the cats check out their food bowls, waiting patiently until the cats walk away before they finish eating. Too many in our society have unfair opinions of the bully breeds. They just want love, care, and affection, like all dogs.

You obviously had a bad experience but pit bulls can be very loving when raised correctly.

If you truly were an ASPCA supporter you would have already been educated about pits and not say something as ignorant as what you said. Maybe it's stupid people who should be put down but unfortunately we can't legally do it. ALL breed can be dangerous with a bad owner or a gene deformity. Just like humans, dogs can have mental disabilities and most of it is from inbreeding which happens a lot throughout all breeds. Also, certain charactoristics that humand find attractive in a dog are deformatity that people keep breeding. I personally have NEVER encountered a pit that was anything other than a big ole teddy bear. Their owners actually took care of them and didn't leave them locked up in the yard as "protection." This is what the ASPCA keeps fighting for, animal rights. They fight to keep bad owners from owning dogs & fight against these puppy mills inbreeding their dogs. Please, next time educate yourself before sounding like an idiot. If we lived by your way we'd have a lot of breeds banned unstead of educating communities and stopping idiots from having pets.

Pitbulls are not born mean or bullies. Perhaps instead of blaming a breed of dog, one should look at the owners and your states animal abuse laws. All domestic animals are at the mercy of their owners, they have no choice of anything in their lives.

Don't blame the breed, blame the owners. Pit bulls by nature are very sweet and loving dogs. They were originally called "Nanny Dogs" and bred to take care of children. It's people who have made them bad. Ignorant people have bred, and trained them to be fighting dogs. A pit is a bulldog and will NOT let go when it gets started. But put the blame where it belongs. I'm sorry about the loss of your puppy; that had to be horrible to watch. I think I would have shot the owner of the pit though, not the pit.

I agree 100% with you!:) they should put any or all of the bully breeds in calendars like this bc these types of dogs, esp Pits are the ones who fill the shelters the most.

I agree that it would be nice to have a Pit in here with some cats. There is so many negative issues surrounding this breed right now and it would be nice for people to view that there is a softer side to this breed. Its not the breed that is agressive, its the individual dog. Pits were bred as farm dogs, if they bit a human they were put down to wean out the aggressive temperament. The problem now is that people breed them for looks and their personal reasons. People are ruining this breed and they are amazing dogs to own. Just for the record my friends Pit got attacked by a golden retriever and had to be put down due to the injuries it sustained. Pit Bulls aren't the only dogs that can act out but they are the only attacks that seem to be publicized.

Why not a cover with all four photos? Would be terrific.

That's a great idea, Jean. Why not have them all.

YES, THAT IS A GREAT IDEA. THEY ARE ALL SO BEAUTIFUL.

Need an outdoor photo of cats. The dogs have the advantage of the pretty background.

Cats don't belong outside you idiot!

It's soo hard to choose!!! why not a collage of all kinds of animals? They are all fantastic beings!!!

I agree with the other posters, a picture with cats and dogs together would be wonderful... Also why can't all 4 pics be on the cover.. but I do hope they have a month dedicated to them along with thier stories...I love them all but, and I am a cat person but i picked a dog :o...because of the story.

I agree that a collage of all 4 would be great! It's too hard to choose.

I to would like to see a cover with both cats and dogs.

A dog that gets shot and then is adopted is a very special dog in my book. It is always hard to find people to adopt animals but to find a special person that will adopt a mixed breed dog that has been shot, now that was a person with a hugh heart and I think they deserve to have their Pooch on the cover.

They are all so adorable that it is so hard to pick, I would like to pick them all!

Very hard to choose!

I have a female Jack Russell named Bella and I just love her! Hmmm...Buddy and Bella!

While I am more of a dog person, I agree, to represent ASPCA a picture of dogs and cats together would be better.

Who cares what you are? Dog people are dumb, because they don't understand cats and don't want to take the time to understand them. Cats don't kiss your butt like dogs do, that is why you don't like cats. Tell us the real reason.

What is the matter with you? This is supposed to be a page commenting on the calendar cover animals. Quit be confrontational about cat people and dog people. We all love animals or we wouldn't be on this site. Grow up!

Hooray! You're so right. By the way, all the spelling hooha -- the mispelled word was NOT put out there by ASPCA, it was a comment from a reader. Give people a break!

You poor misguided fool. Dogs are not dumb, just affable, which is obviously not something you're overly familiar with. And my cat totally kisses my ass! What a load of crap. I say this I have a whole bunch of dogs too. Seriously, you're doing something wrong if you think cats are more aloof than cats.

If I can only choose one photo, it would be of Maow and Bruce, because I believe ASPCA needs to really promote multiple pet adoptions. My single adopted cat is so much happier now that he has a buddy (also adopted). However, I also agree that it would be nice to show all 4 pictures as a collage or at a minimum, have a picture with both cats and dogs (again, to promote the idea of multiple adoptions). After all, once a shelter finds a good home for a dog or cat, that same home is likely to be a perfect home for additional adopted pets.

...who wins...any of them deserve to be on the cover and in the calendar. There's never a loser when an animal is rescued.

What a hard choice!!!! All those beautiful babies should be on the cover.

I also hope that the other three who didn't get picked for the cover do make it into the calendar. They are all great pictures and they all deserve to be in there.

Instead of just cats and dogs why not also throw some bunnies & birds in there.

I would love to see bunnies, fish, guinea pigs etc. too. Great idea!

It's a toss-up between Rocky and the two smiling pooches. I agree that it would be better to have a shot of a dog and cat or puppy and kitten together.

Millions of parrots are re-homed each year, so they need to get some attention, too.

I have a Jack Russell, easy vote there, and he was adopted. But, I also have 4 adopted kittens/cat. Hard decision, ... but in the end all animals win.

of course...all...they were all great...and I agree should be included inside it..

Love all the pictures. I am a dog lover but all the animals are adornable. Rocky is just a cutie. Please place all of the animals in the calendar.

The dog photos with the most colorful background are the best for a cover photo. The two photos of the cats have light or washed out background. Buddy has the best expression of the dog photos. It is in the eyes. I love cats and dogs but the two dog photos were the best photos for a cover.

I would like to see cats & dogs together.

Please feature the wonderful fabulous, Catahoula Leopard Hound on one of your feature pieces. They are fantastic and most people have never heard of them which punishes those wonderful babies who need rescued or adopted, as they are unknown to most who are looking for a doogie. thanks

I am a 100% dog lover but Rocky the cat is absolutely beatiful and I voted for him!!
