ASPCA Rescues 50 Dogs in Bronx Dog Fighting Case

Friday, June 22, 2012 - 12:30pm
Puppy Rescued By Humane Law Enforcement

Nearly 50 dogs, ranging in age from 12 weeks to five years, were found yesterday living in the windowless basement of a six-story apartment building in the Bronx. The space, which served as a makeshift dog fighting arena, was littered with crude wooden cages and had the capacity for roughly 100 spectators. Raul Sanchez, the building’s superintendant, was taken into custody and charged with animal fighting, a felony.

Working closely with the NYPD Vice Enforcement Division and the Bronx District Attorney's Office, our team played a critical role in the rescue of the dogs, forensic evidence collection and on-scene documentation.

Also discovered on scene were a loaded .25-caliber handgun, U.S. currency, and other equipment associated with dog fighting—including dog treadmills, harnesses, muzzles, syringes and a shopping cart full of raw chicken parts.

"Organized dog fighting is a brutal form of animal abuse where dogs are exploited and forced to fight as their owners profit from their torture," says Howard Lawrence, Senior Director of Operations for the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement. "The dogs we saw today exhibited scarring and injuries consistent with fighting dogs. We’re determined to protect New York City's animals from this form of cruelty."

The dogs, many of whom showed scars from fighting, were transported to a temporary shelter for further evaluation by our emergency response medical team. The ASPCA will continue to provide legal support to the Bronx District Attorney's Office to help prosecute the case.

The investigation is ongoing.

"Raul Sanchez, the building’s superintendant, was taken into custody and charged with animal fighting, a felony." What a scumbag. They should have tied him to a chair in that basement and let the dogs rip him apart while we bet on how long it takes him to die.

The ASPCA "rescued" these dogs by dumping them at NYC Animal Care & Control, which is a slaughterhouse. The animals there are abused and neglected before being killed. In the meantime, the public thinks the ASPCA has "rescued" these dogs and donate money, which the ASPCA adds to the $120 million it is already hoarding in its bank account. These are some of the ID of the pups dumped at ACC by ASPCA. If no one adopts them, they will be killed. Why is the ASPCA using this to solicit donations?? The dogs have been dumped in the 3 NYC ACCs - all 3 are Kill Shelters which destroy 10-20 per day, 7 days a week, 364 days a year.

same reason they make those really sad commercials using famous faces. to make money and look good.

HEY ASPCA - WHERE ARE ALL THESE DOGS NOW?!?

Great, now this scumbag owner will receive a $50 fine. That will teach him! Why don't we do the cheaper, and better alternative, and bring him out back and let some of these dogs maul him to death. The dogs might get satisfaction out of it. Until there are rules in place to prevent these things, which it doesn't look like there will be in the near future, these awful things will continue to happen.

I'm sure we would all like to be the one who pulls the arena gate open for a scum vs pitbull bloodbath, but that isn't what our society does at this time. All we can do is write letters and make phone calls to the right ppl to force them to force the courts take animal abuse more seriously.

I'm just reading all of these comments now about the dogs that were dropped off at a high kill shelter. I really hope that isn't the case. I thought of the ASPCA as a voice for animals. Can someone tell me how they know these dogs were dropped off to be killed? I used to donate through SECA to the ASPCA everytime I got paid, but I switched my donation to Dogs on Death Row. If all of these rumors about ASPCA rescuing dogs just to drop them off at high kill shelters is true, the ASPCA will never get another dime from me.

Thank you all involved in reporting it, investigating this, following in up, documeting, and finally rescuing these poor defenseless victims of horrible abuse and miseryl. I hope the punishment is severe and the judge uses this sorry POS as an example of what will happen if use dog fighting as your business...

OK, y'all. How about, "Thank doG"? Luv you, luv those pittie puppies. ASPCA is the best!

Thanks everyone for all of your comments. Many of the dogs, which range in age from 12 weeks to five years, exhibit injuries indicative of fighting and may have other conditions. This is an ongoing criminal investigation and the ASPCA is managing the dogs’ care in a temporary shelter. These dogs have NOT been transferred to Animal Care & Control of NYC.

ASPCA ARE SCUMBAGS! THREW AWAY ALL THOSE DOGS & PUPPIES TO KILL SHELTERS LIKE YESTERDAYS TRASH. THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES. THEN TRY TO BENEFIT OFF THEM AFTER THEY ALREADY DUMPED THE DOGS INTO CERTAIN DEATH. WHAT A WASTE OF LIFE! THEY WILL NEVER ESCAPE THEIR DESTINED KARMA.

People who abuse dogs by dog fighting disgust me. For their punishment, they should be treated the same for as long as the oldest dog is.

These operations take time and dedication. Thankyou so, so very much for your steadfast work. I hope you know those of us who love four leggeds, snd all creatures, appreciate what you do. I volunteer at our shelter and have fostered many rescues (kept several through many years. Thankyou, thankyou. People, can you not fight about what people believe or don'tbelieve for the sake of being civil and accepting? I thought this would be one board that wouldn't makeitanissue. concentrate on the innocent being cared for and rescued. Be thankful for it whatever you believe or don't believe. (sorry for the run on words as the spacing is messed up)

I am ashamed of the human race that which allows or parttakes in dog fighting or any form of crulity towards animals. I am a lifetime lover of pitbulls, and they have been given a bad enough name by ignorant people, but somehow they are still the most lovable animals I have ever seen. I just want to say thank you to the people helping to protect and rescue these animals, hopefully one day we will live in a world where animals are respected and loved as they desrve to be.

Amen to that,.,,,,,,

Dog Bless you rescuers!

This is so sad.I have two pit bulls (boys) and wow!! I cannot imagine this. They are such sweet dogs. I don't understand why people abuse them. They should get charged with a FELONY!! and serve time in prison!!

This is the first time I've read this blog, and I am so turned off by the pettiness in the comments. I am here because I love animals and I love the ASPCA for helping animals, but I would hate to be associated with half the people involved in this discussion. You people make me sick. It has nothing to do with god, and if you don't believe in any sort of deity, shut your bigoted mouth. Way to make this horrible story about yourself.

Did you get up on the wrong side of the bed this morning? Run out of coffee, or are you just a jerk? How can you say for sure God didn't have something to do with the police finding out about this place and rescuing those dogs. Do you know that for a FACT? I don't think so, and the people that talk about God are not talking about themselves. You have a real problem. Suggest you take a few deep ones and get over it. Those people are basically just glad the dogs were rescued--period. And you call them bigoted? Do you know the meaning of that word? Don't think so. Go take something to calm yourself. You need professional help.

ABSOLUTELY, thank God it was exposed. He gave us humans, even inhumane ones, the ability to make choices. Some don't make the right ones. Simple as that. Let Go & Let God ... he will handle it in his time.

Hoping that these dogs can find loving homes. Sadly many people think these dogs who have faught are incapable of living a normal life. They can make wonderful pets, but can be aggressive towards other dogs. I know I had a dog that I took from a person I knew who would fight pits. Best dog I ever had.

Ojala puedan ayudar a los cachorros de 12 semanas y puedan educar ayuar a los que mas puedan con clases de obediencia...

Im the owner and operator of best paw forward. We are a dog training company in new York. But, I specialize in physiological rehabilitation for extreme aggresions, fears and phobias. If there is anything I can do to help with the placement or rehab of the dogs please let me know!. My direct line is 516-320-5330. I also recued fighting and bait Pitts for almost 7 years. We do the rehabilitation in my home.

I love dogs and hate anyone who would abuse them. Good job ASPCA and NYPD. It is no accidnet that God spelled backwards is Dog.

God Bless all of the people that were involved to stop these animals from any further cruelty to these innocent creatures. Pit Bulls are wonderful, loyal, and loving dogs. Seeing that beautiful puppy's face that the NYPD officer is holding brought me to tears-so adorable and sweet, I just do not understand how anyone could be as heartless and cruel. THEY are the animals, not the dogs. Thank you again for saving all that could be rescued!

I have a nice little tip for you guys....STOP WITH THE HOUR LONG COMMERCIALS...want to make things better...Throw them all in the damn river!!!Give them to the Chinese and let them cook them up for dinner!!! Leave our air time on the TV to something worth watching..Not some fucking animal loving millon dollar commercial..

You are one sick human being. It should be you going to China and I would be more than willing to pay for your one-way air ticket and personally dump your useless, insensitive posterior in the boiling pot. You are a malignant boil on the existence to mankind and the face of the earth. It's just unfortunate you even exist.

The only thing important in all this non sense debate of God and choices is the fact that this is an issue our country, and a hero is among us as the ASPCA is over worked and under paid yet remains strong in the fight to help those animals in need, when you allow yourself to be taken off the true subject of cruelty , it does not help these animals. If we believe in God or not, as long as we can come together an put our differences aside to become one united helping network for the animals in need, then our personal beliefs can wait for another time an place. This place is a savior for animals in need an though some may use words to describe their love for the animals, long as we can come together for this reason, all else doesn't matter. We are all here for one reason! These dogs. Who cares how someone words the fact they are agreeing this dog fighting is wrong , An it's a wonderful thing they are saved! Who cares how it's said!! Just be glad it's said at all!!

I am so glad these dogs were rescued and I hope they all eventually find good homes. I also hope, however, that the court sends the persons responsible for this to prison for a very long time. That is where the animal abuse legal system fails. The courts. Judges fail to do their jobs and refuse to sentence animal abusers to prison. Instead they give them a lollipop on the way out of the courtroom and make them promise "never to get around an animal again." Something no one can enforce.

I am so HAPPY that those poor innocent animals were rescued!!!! THANK YOU to the rescue team and the ASPCA

Thank YOU for rescuing these animals from the horrible torture they endured. I am PROUD to be a member of the ASPCA and thank GOD for you all each day! I hope all these amazing dogs get adopted by LOVING homes that they deserve!!!!!!!

Thank you for rescuing these poor animals.. Can't never uderstand why be so cruel to animals, they should be treated like a human beings because they have feelings too.. I have a pitbull mastiff that was given to me so I can sell him and I decided to keep him because I did not want to put him in the wrong hands.. He is such a friendly and loveable dog..I'm glad I decided to keep him...

I seen and read arcile and it upsets me to no means and I know those were pits and yall wont give them a chance to show they can learn to love and I know it can be done I seen it done. but yall like putin them to death cause of breed well you show do the same to the humas that put them in that place treat them the same as u treat the pits even though the the pits dont deserve it.

As a pit bull owner several times over, I understand the breed very well. They have been bred for fighting for many many years. Do I support the fighting? Of course not. But they were bred to fight and it does take a lot of training to make them well adjusted family pets. As I have said so many times over I am hoping so much that this breed is saved for all of it's amazing qualities and all of the aggression is bred out as it has been with so many other "bully" breeds. I know the ASPCA will do the necessary testing to make sure the dogs that have been taken from this fighting ring are able to be adopted out into family situations. It makes me sick to my stomach to think of people watching this blood sport or enjoying it or making money from it. If you are thinking of adopting a pit bull do your research. Again they require lots of training, can be very challenging, but also very rewarding. Miss you and love you every day Reggie. :)

as always humans prove to show their savage side, and its sickening. I thank you ASPCA for doing all you do, and I ask everyone I know to do something, SAY SOMETHING if they know something, and donate to ASPCA to keep this foundation growing and helping innocent lives that cannot help themselves. I though we were getting past out caveman years...

I just wanted to give my comment on the dog fighting captives. Good Job, Way to Go NYPD - ASPCA team, you all are doing a fantastic job, I wish for you to catch all of the worthless people who have dogs just for this cruel so called sport. These people that have the dogs, should not even have a houseplant.

these kind of people have no love in their hearts just hate and MONEY and they should be the ones PUT DOWN NOT THE DOGS

Not too long ago, I read on Cesar Milan's website his insights about the US issue with far too many dogs and not enough good homes, after going on his international tour. He made a comment about how Germany does not have the same problems we have. After researching why, he found it was because they have extremely strick laws on the Breeders, and thus do not have to focus on owners actions after the fact. Control of how we bring animals into this world. This made complete sense to me and would love to see a movement in this country to put the focus on controling animal breeders of all kinds. Laws in this area could also prevent, allow punishment and shut down of those breeding for dog fighting. I think we need to change our focus in this country to prevention rather than trying to bandage an out of control situation, with so few resources. Thank you for hearing my view.

yes! the I think it was an act of God!!! that those pups were saved by the Aspca team...Im praying that they all get adopted to good loving homes....Amen

I think the Humane Law Enforcement of the ASPCA is one terrific, outstanding group. Thank God for them. Keep on saving those innocent lives. May God Bless all your endeavors.

Thank you to the ASPCA for all you do. i am retired and give all that i can to help. You are wonderful people to give of your time for all the unfortunate animals that are mistreated and are in catrastropies. I commend you!

Thank you to the ASPCA for all work they do on behalf of animals. When you call for humans to be forced to fight each other or be exiled to an island or shot, then you are displaying the same character as the people who force dogs to fight. The dogs can be rehabilitated & so can the humans. Vick did his time & regrets his past actions. People & animals who are victimized, in turn victimize others. It is society's job to rehabilitate & break the cycle of abuse. Please show the compassion you wish for the animals to your fellow humans. It is the humane thing to do. Love heals. - searay

Thank you for busting this dog fighting and saving the dogs. But will ASPCA work to place these fought dogs or buy into the belief you can't rehabilitate these types of dogs? I hope they do place them because there are too many people that believe they can't be integrated into a normal life.

Best news I've heard today! Those savages that find entertainment in watching animals in battle and bloodied are sick, sick, sick!

The penalties better be severe or this barbarism will continue!

I am appalled by what I have just read. These Devilish Beasts don't deserve anything better than to be placed in the same ring where the dogs were watched fighting, and to fight themseleves against each other for their lives like gladiators during ancient Roman Empire times. I guarrantee that in a matter of weeks, not months, the Dog Fighting would be history

If that were true, then people would have stopped murdering one another when execution was the only punishment for it. Murder never stopped murder so why would forced fighting of humans stop forced fighting of dogs?

Thank you ASPCA for the hard work you have done, in stopping the Dog Fighting. In my opinion, 1 year in Prison just isn't enough time to teach these people a lesson. This is animal cruelty. They might as well be beating these loveable dogs, which I know they are, under normal situations. I applaude all the hard work you are doing to keep them safe. Infact, I truely believe the owners of these dogs should be in prison, and beaten to death!!! I believe punishment should fit the crime. Thank you, Linda C Pannell
