ASPCA Rescues 50 Dogs in Bronx Dog Fighting Case

Puppy Rescued By Humane Law Enforcement

Nearly 50 dogs, ranging in age from 12 weeks to five years, were found yesterday living in the windowless basement of a six-story apartment building in the Bronx. The space, which served as a makeshift dog fighting arena, was littered with crude wooden cages and had the capacity for roughly 100 spectators. Raul Sanchez, the building’s superintendant, was taken into custody and charged with animal fighting, a felony.

Working closely with the NYPD Vice Enforcement Division and the Bronx District Attorney's Office, our team played a critical role in the rescue of the dogs, forensic evidence collection and on-scene documentation.

Also discovered on scene were a loaded .25-caliber handgun, U.S. currency, and other equipment associated with dog fighting—including dog treadmills, harnesses, muzzles, syringes and a shopping cart full of raw chicken parts.

"Organized dog fighting is a brutal form of animal abuse where dogs are exploited and forced to fight as their owners profit from their torture," says Howard Lawrence, Senior Director of Operations for the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement. "The dogs we saw today exhibited scarring and injuries consistent with fighting dogs. We’re determined to protect New York City's animals from this form of cruelty."

The dogs, many of whom showed scars from fighting, were transported to a temporary shelter for further evaluation by our emergency response medical team. The ASPCA will continue to provide legal support to the Bronx District Attorney's Office to help prosecute the case.

The investigation is ongoing.

life is not just for us

So true, well said.

I thank God for people like you everyday!! I'm so glad those sweet babies have been saved. What a blessing!!!

You thank God? That's nice. Where was God when it happened?

Why do bring God into this when this is clearly human abuses?? This is man's evil doings not God's

i totally agree but what i don't understand is why would someone want to yet alone think about abusing animals, when their so sweet. its just sad that that's what someone would want to do. unbelievable!! its so ridiculous but at least the ASPCA saved those poor animals.

the reason she said thank god is because god is helping fight agaist the animal cruelty and he has people doing their job ,by putting the people in jail that beat on animals besue they're his chrildren to...

and yes, I thank God too that this was exposed!

Well said!

If someone mentions "God" or "blessings" in passing, let it go. This is no place to question someone's religion. The dog's were saved, and that is all that matters here.

yes i agree it isn't about religion its about saving the animals from cruel people

God works in mysterious ways, the people that help the animals are sent by God, that's they're Gos give talent given to them, don't forget the heart, his nature is love and because we love naturally is what gives us the courage to step in and help these poor animals. There's always a learning lesson coming from God. Quit taking out your frustration our on him. God is not a religion, religion is political,God isn't. So if that's what you think God is, then you know nothing. And two, God expects us to help each other in crisis which is why we're put on this earth, quit expecting him to do your work for you, that's what you're here for. So yes he's done his part but the rest if up to you. The sad fact here it that nobody appreciates all that he is doing or has done for us. Everybody wants to blame God when things go wrong. Where were you when the Devil was right in front of you creating hell on earth for the poor animals. He's the bad guy in all this not God. That's all I have to say on the subject.

With every evil and inhuman activity, we are free to question God's presence or possible callous neglect. I sort of have come up with a resolution in my mind. I'd like first to impress upon the reader here that I am not a zealous religious individual. My conclusion just makes sense to me. God allows for crime, inhuman acts of violence and hatred. Until He just can't take it anymore and He strikes it down one way or another ... hence the ASPCA is defending mistreatment of animals as they learn of it. At the base of either side of this argument is the primary basis of evil and crime. The element of 'free choice' is at the base of every Christian or God based action and of deliberation as well as every evil or criminal action.

I agree - where were God when all of this happened??? We give credit to God everytime something good happen therefore, we have every rights to question God when bad things happen instead of turning our backs! Humans are the most evil creature beings compared to animals and we are the reason why this world is so messed up and innocents (animals, children, and disabled) are the one paying huge price for our selfishness! Who is really God here?? Those people who dedicate their life to help and protect those less fortunate and easily exploited victims like animals, children, and disabled. Those people who were involved in pitbull fighting should be shot!

I UNDER STAND HOW YOU FEEL. I PRAY EVERY DAY ASKING OUR LORD TO CRUSH ALL THE EVIL PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD ! AND I AGREE THE PEOPLE INVOLED IN MAKING DOGS FIGHT SHOULD BE SHOT !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh definitely shot, strung up, gased, do not need those type of people to even share, breath our living space. The jail is even way too good for them!!! DEFINITELY SHOT AND NO REFORMING HERE, MICHAEL VICK GOT OFF WAY TOO EASY!!!!!

you are so right couldn't be more right cause all they get is a certant amunt of time in prison and then they go right back and do the same thing again and again for ever and it gets passed on generation through genoration

James, my take on your comment above, and this is my opinion, that God allows me to have, is that God WAS THERE...He/She is always there! Every time there is an evil act, created by the evil one that is the poison that greed, and death feeds on...God is there. The evidence is that the ASPCA, and the other rescuers showed up. The evidence is that people with loving hearts cared for them. The evidence that He/She was and is there is because this thread is published, so that others can hear about the MIRACLE that took place that day. So that kind people like yourself can educate others to the abhorant wrong that you witnessed or read about. Whenever I hear people say "How does God let this happen?"...it is because a human mind chose to let it happen or a natural disaster that occured...but it is God that corrected the situation. God that made us aware, saved the animals, saved the people, fixed the problem, gave us the knowledge to enact laws to prevent it to happen again. Happens every day and all day...allmiracles.

God gives humans free will. We decide how to treach each other as well as animals. We will be judged on what we choose to do with our own personal lives. You can only control yourself not others. Thank God some people see that there is a serious problem with how some humans treat each other and animals and will do something about it. I thank God every day for the blessings he provides. Not a bad thing and very appropriate for me.

i totally agree your very wise and you know how to give good advise

To all of you darn internet trolls, shut up. You do realise this is the ASPCA site, right? Go to a bar and ponder the existance of God with another drunk. You should all be happy there are people out there like the volunteers at ASPCA trying to change this. Just shut up and go away.

A big thank you to the ASPCA for rescuing these dogs and puppies. Your actions are wonderful and commendable. I have always supported your efforts and will always continue to do so as the 'parent' of seven rescue cats and one rescue dog. To everyone who feels the need to distract from this story by debating the existence or nonexistence of god - I wholeheartedly agree with the commenter who said go on down to the bar and ponder on the issue there - or find yourself an internet site on which to do so....this is not the correct forum, and it has nothing to do with the story at all. Thanks for your consideration.

:( :/ :0 :( :/ :0

Dittos.I support animals and when i come to this site the last thing i want to hear about is god.Give me a break!Take your preaching somewhere else. This is an animal welfare site, not an online church.

I cant believe how ignorant people can be. I agree this is a website for saving animals. Not a debate site about your beliefs.

Really....you had to throw the "where was God when it happened card"! God was there...he gives people the opportunity to do the right thing...he gives us choices. We can either decided to do whats right or whats wrong....these people chose to do whats wrong. Maybe you should read the Bible and you would not have asked such a question. God was there, he will punish those that did this, maybe not in our time and we may not witness it, but, he will in his time. Its so sad what these dogs have to go through and I hate it! I am a animal rights activist and pit bull owner and support punishment to those that are cruel to animals....they deserve better and they too are a creation from God. He doesn't like it either and I'm sure would rather people who approve of dog fighting to choose to do the right thing and not do it, but, once again...we make the decision to do it even though we know its wrong. God is always with us...and thank God we have people like the ASPCA and others who come forward and report these things happening....just saying.

to people reading this, go to www.facebook.com/justiceforwyatt to see story. A kitten in Erie, PA was brutally tortured by a group of kids. kicked, tossed high into the air and hitting cement. He had a punctured lung, sprained back and brain damage. No arrests. We have started a petition to the President to get these laws changed for all animal abusers. It has gone across the country because of sharing. Please take the time to go there and sign to stop all abuse and let little Wyatt's tiny cries be heard. Thank You

You sent a petition to the HNIC? I mean the President? He could care less about whats going on. That dimwit is to busy trying to fool his people into voting him in again. If there is a God, I hope he wakes the people of america up to this phony. How has his "CHANGE" worked out for you that voted for him????

Thank you very much for setting the issue of "free will" for everyone to understand and that God has no control over how we use our free will ( that is why it is "free will") Yes we decide how to chose how to use or will, eventhough it goes against what we have been taught, And yes God is present and he will deal with these people in his own way and possible treat the abusers in the same way they abused God's creatures. Another thing I wanted to add is that if it was not for the love of animals and continued legal work to increase the the finds and jail terms for abusers too many people would get away with hurting and killing Gods creatures. Abuse to animals is no less sever than the sever injuries and abuse that is committed against children and adults in the community. When Animal Planet first previewed on TV the perps would get EITHER a fine OR jail time and the crime was a mindeminor. Now some offenses are FELONIES AND IT IS JAIL AND MONEY FINE. I thank God (or any other Diety) for the great work the ASPCA does to bring to justice the abusers of anmals.

god is everywhere we human are the one the keep pushing him away

Perfectly said..

Good point ..people thank quote "God" when men & women do all the dirty work here on this Earth trying to do "GOOD"..and keep Evil at bay....Quote "God" just sits back and lets the chips fall where they may...

God doesn't meddle with what the Devil chooses to do. That's what we are here for. Stop blaming God for not being there. That's what he created us to be judge and jury for. Wake up! God put us here to be His angels of grace. That's why the other post says "Thank God for the ASPCA and their work." Duh.

Yes we Thank God for the good people that rescued this innoccent babies, they dd not ask for this and yes God was there just like he is always looking over us, everyone blames God when bad things happen he doesn't cause these things to happen and he is with all of us all of the time, how many people thank God when good things happen not many.
