ASPCA Offers $15,000 Reward in Puppy Cruelty Case

We are devastated to report that a three-month-old Pit Bull puppy named Joey was thrown from a car in Brentwood, Long Island, on Saturday. A witness found the tiny 10-pound pup in a plastic bag near the Sagtikos State Parkway, covered in fleas and crying out for help. Joey suffered three broken vertebrae in his neck and is recovering at the Veterinary Medical Center of Long Island.

The ASPCA is offering a reward of $15,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in this case. This reward is in addition to a $5,000 reward offered by the Suffolk County SPCA. We are also providing a $10,000 grant to the Veterinary Medical Center to offset some of the costs of treating and caring for Joey.

“We were both outraged and saddened to hear about this disturbing case of violent abuse, and the callousness that was demonstrated by those responsible,” says Matt Bershadker, Senior Vice President of the ASPCA’s Anti-Cruelty Group. “While our ultimate hope is that these types of heinous acts never occur, this is a message that cruelty toward animals will not be tolerated. We are pleased to be in a position to help those who are helping Joey.”

I agree with you. To hear that such a poor lil guy was abused that way is disgusting,inhumane and horrible. I pray that he recovers an get a wonderful loving home...and I hope he didn't have any siblings that were abused like this. This SOB needs to pay dearly, and they need to stiffen that laws against animal cruelty. This happens all over the country in every class of people so stop pointing the fingers and do something proactive.

I completely agree. Whenever I read stories such as these I get sick to my stomach and become even more disgusted with our own race. Who does this? Someone who abuses another due to the defenseless nature of the latter (elderly, children, animals) deserve to be in jail.

I also get more disgusted w/ our "human" race, though I hardly can call someone who abuses the helpless a human. I think those who abuse animals, elderly, & children (the helpless) should receive the same kind of torture they gave until they beg to die. Then advocates for the abused can finish them off so they are not a waste of space in the prison system, where they are leaches to tax payers.

These are not humans, they are monsters! Why should we pay for them to be in the prison system. Besides, they'll only be released on a short-term sentence due to prison over-crowding & do it again! I totally agree; they are a waste of space & oxygen & should be given the death penalty by a judge.

It is so nice to hear someone that feels the exact way I do!!! People may think I am blood thirsty, but I agree with my late father, if they would take monsters like this, and murders, child molesters, and the like, and have public hangings, or public firing squads, I guarantee it would stop some of this stuff!!! Their are no consequences for people's actions anymore, if someone commits a heinous act, the worst they can expect is prison, and in todays world that means cable tv and steaks for dinner!!! I am serious!!! My ex-husband had a cousin that was found guilty of murder in the 1st degree, and she got life without possibility of parole, and from what I have learned from the family, she gets to watch cable tv every day, has a better room to live in the a lot of people I know, and gets steak and seafood every week!!!!! What in the world has this world come to when the monsters of society get treated better than I children in orphanages do? And I also grew up with similar viewpoints as your late dad aired - public hangings, firing squads, stoning... You cannot rehabilitate a monster and when it comes to animals, they appear to like to hurt them. Even though I am not fond of Pit Bulls, I am fond of animals in general and I also want to hear this creep or creeps have been caught and dealt with. A large can of fleas introduced into a windowless room with the creep or creeps for about 1 week's time should be a great start for rehabilitation...

I agree with you. Public execution and/or extreme punishment for these scumbags might rattle some other would-be abusers if they know that their consequences will be severe. Maybe this sounds barbaric to some but when you consider the fact that this was a pre-meditated act, maybe it will make more sense to you. Also, it is a known fact that people that abuse animals in any way, most likely abuse children, humans and whatever they can get away with. If these disturbing situations are'nt handled properly, the abusers will only take it to the next step and that should NOT be an option. God watch over Joey and make sure that when he is well enough to be adopted, the new owner should be screened thoroughly, including a back-ground check. You never know who's standing beside you or working near you, etc.

So sad this is so heartbreaking. How can people treat an animal so horrible. What do animals do to us? All they want is someone to love them and take care of them. My husband and I have our dog he's so spoiled rotten. We love him so much he's our child. People that are so cruel shouldn't ever be able to be around any animal, never the less own one. I do hope there's JUSTICE for this little guy. The people who done this I hope they are found. We need to put a STOP TO ANIMAL CRUELTY.

I adopted a dog - pit bull - who was also thrown from a car. He suffered severe emotional and physical trauma both before and during this event, including broken legs. I love him so much and hope that little Joey finds a home where he will be loved like my Walter is. I will never understand people who do these things to animals. I look at Walter's face and sometimes I still get teary thinking about what he went through. Thank you to those who are helping Joey!!

This is really so dispicable, it makes me sick! There seems to be a million stories of abuse and I just find it unfathomable that a human being (or really just a being) could be this cruel. I totally agree with you. There are so many other options to remove a dog from your home, no matter what the reason. The "criminals" who are responsible for this little puppy's injuries and mistreatment need to go to jail, not just fined for animal cruelty. That is the only way they will know that we are NOT going to allow this kind of treatment to continue. God bless the person who rescued this little puppy and found help for him to recover.

There are some terrible people in the world. But there are also wonderful, altruistic people, like the ones that are helping poor Joey. Here's hoping the people involved in his abuse and abandonment are given the punishment they deserve. No animal should be treated this way.
