Four Must-Dos for Vacationing with Your Pet!

Can’t stand leaving your pet behind on vacation? You don’t have to! More people are choosing to include their animal companions in family vacations than ever before. Just keep in mind that a bit of extra planning—and packing—may be in order.

Time for a check-up. A trip to the vet is a good idea. Make sure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date before you hit the open road.

Location! Location! Location! It's essential to make sure your accommodations,  hotel or apartment, are pet-friendly. Otherwise, you could be in for an unpleasant surprise when you arrive at your destination.

Prevention is key. Mistakes happen and pets get lost, so make sure your pet has a microchip and is wearing a collar and ID tag.

Pack for your pup! Be sure to bring along all of the necessary supplies to care for your pet. Double check to make sure you have a crate, toys, plenty of food and a doggy seatbelt!

I took my 2 dogs (Pekingese) with me on a car trip across country. From Boston to San Diego and then back home through the south. They were such good girls. The only thing they didn't like was when we were driving in the desert and I stopped to let them Pee, they hated peeing in dirt They wanted grass. (It was tough to find grass in the Desert). REMEMBER never to leave your pets alone in the car in the heat for even a minute. When I had to stop at the rest area to use the potty, I kept the car running with the AC on high and would run back to the car as fast as I could.

Leaving your keys in the car isnt a good idea. I pull off to a VERY secluded place in the warm months when I travel with my doggie and do my people thing outside the car. I leave no mess or paper. I also try to get to a dog freindly hotel ASAP and not drink too much coffee!

Pet boarding, pet sitter or pet vacation which is better…. Is your travel route and destination pet friendly? Do all of your vacation activities include your pet? Can they accompany you to all of your activities If not who is going to babysit? Leaving your pet in a strange motel room may not be a good choice. Leaving your pet in your car is illegal in many places. Not all restaurants are pet friendly. Etc So, will both of you enjoy really this vacation? Or would both of you be better off if your pet were placed in a boarding kennel or had a pet sitter? Another option may be to ‘shop-ahead’ for a pet boarding kennel. You can both enjoy traveling and a few destination activities together. Then place your pet in a safe pet boarding kennel while you enjoy a few ‘people-only’ activities. Certainly, this article’s excellent advice regarding pet vaccinations, microchip, ID tag, accommodations and appropriate pet supplies. Happy Traveling, drh

These days there are better ways to board a dog. You could try a fancy pet hotel but even still, the dogs spend a good portion of time alone. My guess is that few dogs care whether or not their room has an i pod or a high def flat screen TV. I run a dog boarding home and in my experience, what almost all dogs want most is to be with a human. Boarding your dog in a private home is an ideal alternative to kennel boarding in that even though their main human is away, their daily routine is not drastically impacted. At Green Doggie Home Boarding in Granada Hills, CA for example, dogs have the freedom to move around as they please, they sleep wherever they like, go for walks in the park, go hiking, swimming and more. At no point are they ever left alone so separation anxiety is not an issue. Plus they have the opportunity to socialize with other friendly dogs. Would they rather go on vacation with you? Probably. But if that is not feasible, I think home boarding is the next best option.
