ASPCA Arrests Father and Son for Beating Cat to Death

We never get used to it. No matter how many cases of cruelty our team investigates, the brutality of it still hits us hard in the heart. This case was no exception. In mid-July our Humane Law Enforcement department received a call from an eyewitness who saw a father and son beating their cat to death with a stick. We jumped into action.

Quickly finding the deceased cat in a garbage bag on the side of the road, our Agents subsequently obtained a search warrant for the home. A search uncovered a broken stick encrusted with cat fibers and blood in the attic. Jean Rog Murat, 60, and his son, Robenson Murat, 29, were arrested and taken into custody.

The Kings County District Attorney indicted the duo on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals; overdriving, torturing and injuring animals; and failure to provide proper sustenance for animals. If convicted, the defendants will face a maximum of two years of incarceration.

“This was a heinous act on an innocent animal and a clear case of violent abuse,” says Stacy Wolf, Vice President and Chief Counsel of the ASPCA’s Humane Law Enforcement department. “We praise the district attorney for his commitment to hold these perpetrators accountable for their cruel and callous acts.”

We need stricter laws in this country. This duo MAY receive a "maximum" of two years? Seriously? I know that a lot of people say that cruelty against animals leads to cruelty to humans - and while that may very well be true - A LIFE IS A LIFE. Animals are sentient beings that have feelings, their own language and heirarchical structure among their species. WHAT GIVES US THE RIGHT to put a man in prison (or sentence him to death) for killing a human and then disrespect another species' life by giving a person a mere two years for savagely beating a it to death? Sure, it may seem like a great leap, comparing the life of a human to the life of a cat (since animals' lives are so much shorter than ours), but all life should be sacred. The world may not change with harsher laws, but it WILL deter some from making the horrible mistake of abusing an animal.

if people who hurt other people get more time in jail than a person who hurts an animal, a person can talk and defend themselves animals can't i am not saying than hurting a person is worst than an animal or viceversa, people like these get away with teir criminal acts every day because the animal cannot defend itself my oppinion is that there should be stricter laws against animal abuse. and i hope they get a taste of their own medicine in jail...

Thats bullshit!!!!! 2 years? Seriously, they should get life without parol. Why? Cause thats a sign of serial killer. Why would you only have them do 2 yrs? You think they deserve to only serve 2 yrs. I sure as heck don't. In my opinion give me a gun let me play russian roulette between them see who dies first. i have no problem hurting them like they did the cat that did nothing to them. I have more of a heart for animals then i do humans like them. If i was a lawyer i would get them the death sentence. I would be a shark lawyer, no one abusing animals would be safe from me if i was a lawyer.

Two years is not enough for what those men did to that poor cat. And that's *if* they're even sentenced to the maximum penalty. We all need to write to our state and federal legislatures to demand harsher penalties for cruelty against animals.

So it took two "Men" to kill a cat? I bet it made them feel like a bunch of bad asses beating a small helpless cat. I bet they beat their wives or girlfriends too. I agree with the person who earlier said if the punishment for killing a domestic animal was harsher it would happen a whole lot less. I think i would like to hit them with a baseball bat... several times with them being hog tied so they would know what it felt like to be that cat who could not get away. I wouldn't kill them, i would hurt them enough so they had to go through their whole life thinking about why they got the shit beat out of them and why they are now disfigured. Sounds cruel, but not nearly as cruel as 2 men chasing a cat around beating it with the purpose of killing it. RIP kitty

Appalled? I'm appalled that the sentence wasn't longer. I'm so tired of the legal system not that much about the lives of animals by giving these maniacs a slap on the wrists. Not only should that sociopath mother lose all parental rights, she should be locked away forever. How do we expect that boy to turn into a good memeber of society when he's raised by a monster?

I love my two cats dearly and can't even imagine what I would do to someone if I saw them abusing a helpless animal. It also reminds me why my cats are indoor house cats and not allowed to venture into the pathetic world outside that has creeps like this in it.

I'm really amazed. Don't get me wrong. I agree 100% that two years is not nearly enough for these sick, cruel persons. But the fact that at least there's some degree of law enforcement simply amazes me. I wish there was an agency like ASPCA in my country. Here cruelty to animals goes unpunished. I really admire what you do.

A max of two years? Are you kidding? It should be a minimum of two years or more for every time they hit the poor cat. This is just a sick joke. The only reason for such weak laws is because our jails are full of killers & rapists. We need to punish the offenders with the same sentence they gave their victims. Two years for deliberately taking a life. That is all they stand to get, which they probably won't. The cat has no life left and the painful way it was taken away is senseless. I hope these two have heard of Karma. It is coming for them!

Kudos to the law enforcement officers who took this type of cruelty seriously. The men are in jail where they belong, and if they haven't hit the radar before, they're on it now. Animal cruelty is a tiny step to violence against humans. This is sick and evil behaviour from sick and evil men.

I will never be able to comprehend how or why people can abuse and kill sweet, innocent animals. There needs to be stricter laws in our country against animal abuse. If a human beats and kills another human they would looking at 25 years to life in prison. So why are these disgusting individuals only facing a maximum 2 years? I have seen different types of cruelity in my life, yet I find myself in a kind that I never saw and hope not to hear of again. Around 5 months ago I answered an add in the paper asking for a good home for their 8 year old female cat and that was what I was looking for. I call and ask the main Q&A's about her and met them to take her home, everything was okay and as I exspected at first than I realize they forgot to tell one very important thing- turns out that the poor cat is deaf and I have no way of knowing how to deal with her, I have another female cat the same age and I'm unsure if she feels that something is differant with her new friend. I need to talk to someone about this if possible. Please give me a number to call, Thank-you

The punishment for cruelty to animals needs to be more severe, fines, jailtime and those convicted should be added to a public data base like sex offenders. If they do these things to innocent animals they can do it to people, they have no heart or conscience.....truely sick people.

Because the broken stick used in the attack was found to be in the attic, in my opinion the two men knew what they had done was wrong. If the stick had been a gun used on a person..wouldn't there be a charged for that? Two years is not even close to being enough for committing this cruel of an act.
