Bronx Dog Fighting Victim Recovers, Finds New Home

On the heels of last week’s guilty plea by Raul Sanchez for his involvement in a Bronx-based dog fighting operation, we are thrilled to report that many of the dogs are thriving in their new lives as beloved pets.

In November, we told you a very happy story about Ninja, one of the dogs we rescued and rehabilitated, who found a wonderful forever home. Now we have another heartwarming success story to share: Mona Lisa, who was one of 50 dogs we rescued in June from that dark, dingy Bronx basement, recently went home to a loving family.

Mona now lives with two loving pet parents in a spacious house overlooking 50 mountainside acres, where she takes frequent hikes with her new dog sister, Zelda. Her other favorite activities include snuggling with Zelda by the fireplace and lounging on the couch with her new pet parents.

Mona Lisa’s journey to adoption wasn’t easy. After her rescue, she was transferred to one of our partner shelters, The Animal Support Project, Inc. (TASP) in Cropseyville, New York.

“When Mona arrived at the shelter, she cried and whined like a hyena and was extremely anxious, usually sitting pitifully at the kennel door,” says Melinda Plasse of TASP. But after plenty of attention, care and time to recover, Mona made great progress. “She is outgoing,” Melinda reports, “loves belly rubs, and is kind as can be to children and other animals.”

When we picture Mona Lisa romping around in the woods with her new family, we can’t help but smile. We’re working to make sure that animals nationwide won’t continue to suffer due to the cruel practice of animal fighting. Last week, legislators reintroduced the Animal Fighting Spectator Prohibition Act, which would make attending an organized animal fight a federal offense and would impose additional penalties for bringing a minor to an animal fight.

Please join us in our efforts by asking your own House representative to support this important humane legislation.

People who do such crap as this is not human, they are sick monsters, and they would hurt anything or anyone for money, that why Gods word says, the LOVE of money is the root of all evil, because people will do anything for money. They will fight animals, steel, lie, cheat, rob, murder and many other thing, and all FOR THE LOVE OF MONEY.

It breaks a person,s heart to see that any person could be so cruel, heartless and inhumane to breed an animal for fighting..I hope they get the utmost penalty for what they are doing...I am so thankful for people who dedicate their lives to rescue these suffering animals and give them a chance for a happy and loving life in caring homes....BY CARING PEOPLE...Thankyou From a Canadian neighbour

People can be sick, cruel and greedy! Can't stand it!!!!! Thank you for your courage and for what you did. We need many people like you in this world. You are a saint and our hero! Bless you.

Mona is Beautiful ! Hope the rest of the Pits that were rescued are just as lucky to find good homes

We will always see those that abuse the innocent. Whether their abuse involves fellow humans or animals, it is heartbreaking. Consider praying for those that abuse to be changed, their eyes and hearts turned toward good and decency. May they hold themselves up to a higher expectation. God put us in a position to care for this earth and the living things upon it. There are several places in the Bible that mention God's love for the animals He created. We will be held accountable for the way we care for all of His creations. His Eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me. -How true!

Animal abusers need to be executed, plain and simple. They are a worthless bunch of sob's!

What a doll! I love those ears!! So glad she found the loving home she deserves!

I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT IN 2013 "HUMANS" KEEP ENJOYING WATCHING ANIMAL DIE AND SUFFER. RESPONSIBLE SERIAL KILLERS MUST BE ON JAIL NOW !!. NO EXCUSES ACCEPTED. ZERO TOLERANCE FOR MURDERS, AND ANIMAL CRUELTY.

Really, really happy these dogs, especially Mona Lisa have found new homes. Can't imagine why some people like Sanchez thinks it's ok to have these dogs fight. He will now have to think about what he's done while he's in jail. Hope he does.

Mona Lisa's abuse breaks my heart but my heart is warmed when I hear about people who rescue and adopt animals who are in need. Enjoy your new home Mona Lisa. Love has finally come to you! You are so sweet and so deserving, just like other animals who look for love and get only pain and abuse. People, step up to the plate and do what you can to help animals, please!

when i see these things, i am reminded of why i like animals more than people!

I spend alot of money donating to animals accross the US... Dog fighting makes me sick to my stomach and knowing there are good people out there trying to stop it makes me smile!! Animals cannot speak for themselves. We have too. To all the people that protect them may GOD BLESS YOU!!! You are an ANGEL to an animal! ;)

I want to say too often we hear about these awful stories and don't hear what happens to the animals. Thank you countless times over for taking on these animals and working so hard to place them in loving homes

I'm glad this beautiful dog has a good home & someone who loves her. It's so nice to hear about positive outcomes!!

wow she Is brave to stay in the basement I would be scared. And people she not abuse dogs like that. hurry that she made I thru. its good to now that ASPCA is doing this.

To the family that adopted Mona Lisa...THANK YOU. It makes my blood boil when I think of people being so cruel to innocent animals. I adopted my dog 7 years ago and she changed my life for the better.

For all those wonderful, fellow ( and Ladies) who devote their lives to saving our furry friends from harm, I Love You All !!!! And for all those who choose to harm these precious creatures and steal our joy, we demand you pay for your crimes in the most heinous, dingy, dirty environments we the people can provide.. To our Law Makers. We demand you do your job that we the people elected or appointed you to do. Remember, just because you are the judge does not mean you're the boss, WE ARE THE BOSS !!!!! To The Entire ASPCA Organization, we hold you in the highest regard and thank G-D for your determination to keep all animals safe from harm.

You are my hero THANK YOU!!!!!

Bring tears and heart pain unlike any other. A dog was my one and only friend as a child in a "home" filled with mutual hostility in the adults. "Skipper" saved my life and what ever claims I have to sanity. Human hubris toward other species infuriates and baffles me. I do wish we had death penalty/life imprisionment for these slime bags.

What a wonderful story. It makes me sick, literally to think of any animal being abused/neglected. Thank you ASPCA for all of your wonderful work. God bless.

so-called 'men' who have no balls,no sense of self esteem and have no respect for life, human or animal, and are raised by self-absorbed, negletful, criminal, abusive, usually single parents, grow up to be the scourges of society and abuse and kill anything in their path, children, women and animals. Even if they make millions in football or more likely, selling drugs, they are still worthless thugs. Dog fighting should be a federal felony with mandatory 20 years, no parole. Sorry, bleeding hearts and excuse makers, I call it like it is...

This is truly an amazing story and I wish all gods preciouse animals can all have happy endings . This is why I am a monthly donation giver for life to the ASPCA To be able to know that a lil of your $ a month can payback so much for such trusting and innocent animals to full fill our lives with so much love to forward back to us THANKS ASPCA for all you do LIVE ON!!!!!!

PLEASE, ASPCA! SHOW ME WHAT I CAN DO TO HELP STOP THIS HORRIBLE PRACTICE OF DOG FIGHTING! I WANT TO HELP SO BADLY, BUT DON'T KNOW WHAT I CAN DO.

What a great story and I NEVER get tired of reading these stories. These poor dogs are subjected to such horrible things and I can never understand how/why people think this is acceptable behavior or they say "it's just a dog!" I will never - ever understand that statement! My husband and I are big fans for Pitbulls and Parolees it is an swesome show! What she does for these dogs is wonderful, her daughters, twin sons and all her workers. Watch this show and you will learn so much and it will make you cry. We need to be human to our animal pals. Cruelty is not the answer to anything in this world!

I adopted a pitbull puppy he was thrown in a box upnorth in the winter time along the side of a road, by the grace of God some college students were walking by and heard noise coming from the box, they took those puppies home they were only 4 weeks old. The students took care of them for 2 weeks then sat outside of Wal-mart and I just happened to go by took one look at a very shy brindled bundle and said I will take him. Copper was the most loving, caring and gentle creature you would ever want to know and I was lucky to have him with me for 12 years I just lost him in March 2012. I wanted to adoptive another Pitbull butthe apartment that I live in doesn't permit Pitbull or Pitbull mix. Thank you to all that know how wonderful this breed is and for opening your homes. God Bless.

I am smiling because of the ASPCA's rescue of Mona Lisa and the other 49 dogs living in filth, abuse, and darkness. It makes me feel so good that these dogs were rescued and adopted to loving forever homes. Bless the people who adopted her and may Mona Lisa and Zelda have a long, happy life together.

Thank the Lord for the ASPCA!

So happy to read the happy beginning for Mona & the other dogs you rescued. People who fignt animals should be hung. There is no place in decent society for humans who do wrong to innocent animals. Doggie love & happiness to Mona forever. Thank you to ASPCA for rescuing these dogs and all that you do for the animals. Thank you to the loving family/s that adopted Mona (and the other rescued dogs).

it sickens me to see stories like this...how could any person do this to a sweet, loving dog? since i am only in middle school, i don't have enough money to donate to the ASPCA...but when i get older and get i job, it will definetely be something on my shopping list...LOL.

Why would someone hurt our beloved animals? They are the most wonderful and precious gift from God. My boyfriend and I have adopted and rescued 2 dogs. One was neglected and the other was neglected and abused. It makes me very angry because would someone abuse them. All we have to do is to pray that no one would hurt them. I pray for every animal to have a happy, food and water in their stomachs, a bed, a roof over them, not feel lonely and to have love Let's get our animals a good home!

I CANNOT IMAGINE ANYONE WANTING TO HARM AN ANIMAL I'M SO GLAD THERE ARE PEOPLE LIKE THE RESCUE PERSONNEL TO STOP THE TORTURE.
