Bronx Dog Fighter Sentenced to Hard Time

The dogs rescued from a Bronx dog fighter’s basement last year are finally getting justice. Raul Sanchez, who pleaded guilty to dog fighting a few weeks ago, is now heading to prison.

Last week a judge sentenced Sanchez to one to three years for animal fighting, one year for animal cruelty and one year for criminal possession of a weapon. (Sanchez will serve these sentences concurrently.)

He’s also been slapped with a ban on keeping animals for the duration of his parole. Sanchez waived his right to appeal.

We hope Sanchez’s sentence serves as a reminder to dog fighters that their crimes against innocent animals carry serious consequences.

Justice would be served if these individuals were sentenced to 10 years or more working his brutality-debt off. By that I mean they should be held accountable not only in response to their immediate cruelty but for the residual fall-out from the atrocities that their kind perpetrates.(Collective responsibility so to speak) They have placed themselves outside decent society and they should have to undo the knot of cruelty they have tied by not only working at making amends to our co-inhabitants in a meaningful way.IE. significant portion of their wages directed to shelters etc as well they should be obligated to work with animals under direct supervision of a dog lover and if their sadistic tendencies should resurface, then extreme punitive measures should be applied, such as permanent relocation in our Canadian Tundra of the Great White North. I'm positive a good does of Black Flies in the summer, which have the ability of stripping a man of his flesh and a touch of the balmy winter weather up here might just be the trick to squelch any perverted desire that such a moral moron has to return to his ugly activities.

I have to agree with you. a year for every dog they had abused or murdered in these dog fights. Life for the monsters who hurt these precious animals. All I see is red when I read or hear about such cruelty. I wish Judge Roy Bean was here today. He would clean those dude off the earth! and I would be happy then!

My wonderful doggie and i will go out and celebrate the news, although that horrible person should have gotten minimum 30 years, it is trafficking, and dogs are so vulnerable, it's not like they can call 911-- A part of me is not happy about it, at all!.

I don't think he should be allowed to EVER own another animal. I also would prefer that his multiple sentences NOT run concurrently, but be served individually. That would give him five years, which would be a good start.

he should have got at least 5 years ! what ever happened to the nyc law that you must do minimun of 1 year on weapons charge alone ? i know of a few cases where guys were caught with guns and just got parole ! laws need to be overhalled !

You know, it amazes me that the judge does not give them more time behind bars, as these animals are alive and are man's bestfriend, and for monsters like these men to get off with such little time. Come on! Where is the justice in these sentences? They should get 10 yrs and NO animals for the rest of their life in their possession. I should have been a judge, alas.

Add ten more years to it and while your at it. Make him and other fighters pay twenty-five thousand dollars for each dog saved from this kind of torture and you are looking at a punishment that fits.

Definately not enough time for what he did. Wonder how many dogs suffered by his hands! Give them at least 10 years and never ever own an animal again no matter what state they end up in! Harsher punishment for the crime is needed also a hefty fine like 5 hundred thousand dollars for a crime these innocent dogs are thrown into!

I'm very glad this guy is being punished for the Dog Fighting. But I just don't think it's enough. They need at least 10 years, and no animals allowed once paroled, period. People like him doesn't deserve dogs. Once he gets out, he'll find another way to start again. That's the sad part about these kind of people. They don't have a heart!!! Thank you

This sentence is a pathetic failure for the ASPCA. In New York City, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree has a MANDATORY MINIMUM SENTENCE OF 3.5 YEARS PRISON and a maximum term of 15 years in prison - (New York Penal Law 265.03 (CPW 2). By making the sentences for illegal weapons possession, cruelty, and dog fighting convictions concurrent, he can get out in one year. Maybe less. The criminal got off with a joke sentence for the weapons charge. The cruelty and dog fighting sentences have no real impact on him because they are served concurrently. The criminal is not even banned from owning animals. The ASPCA has no business celebrating this as a "success." They should be screaming bloody hell about the travesty of justice in letting this guy off.

Not even close. These worthless pieces of shit should have the same thing done to them that they do to the dogs. I would love to volunteer for that. You take a life you give your own. Maybe if the punishment was more in line with what they did, they may think twice about doing it. Instead our tax dollars feed and take care of them.

1-3yrs??? Wow. Better than nothing but really a slap to the animal rescuers. He should never be allowed to possess an animal ever and do more time if caught. He also should be put on an animal abuser registery for life. The dogs caught up in that kind of mess surely don't deserve it. He should be more severely punished and made an example of to send a message that any animal abuse will not be tolerated. What kind of time woud he be facing/doing if he was a child abuser? Animals can't speak for themselves neither can children. If they defend themselves by attacking then they are in the wrong? What??? Look at Dutch, rescuers are trying to save him from death for defending himself after an animal abuser admitted he was abused then attacked after taking just so much abuse. HEELO!?!?!?!?!

Exciting news!!! Men are so nasty. If they're not raping, murdering, starting wars, molesting children and women, then they are abusing animals. He should've received at least a five year sentence. A one to three year sentence isn't long enough to think about what he did wrong. He shouldn't ever be allowed to have an animal. Keep this psychopath far away from our children and beloved animals.

Until the Courts and Law enforcement get tired of these animal abusers doing the unthinkable to feeling,live animals whose only want is to be loved and cared for by loving individuals and start making examples of the ones caught being abusive. If there were such thing as an area of the world we could send dog abusers and dog fighters (this is their own country in the world), I really think that would be a good thing. Just them and they would have to figure out how to get food to eat, make their own protection from the weather, etc. and live off the land. That might scare a few people.

It was not enough, but as you can see, the slime ball, plead guilty (Did Vick do that?) and waived his rights to appeal. Hence this was a plea deal. So a jury did not find him guilty, he exposed himself. Now, on the other hand,it was a start, but not enough. The Vick case is a baseline. He got 3 years and was out in 18 months. Then the Phila Eagles Hire this pos. Enough said
