Bronx Dog Fighter Sentenced to Hard Time

The dogs rescued from a Bronx dog fighter’s basement last year are finally getting justice. Raul Sanchez, who pleaded guilty to dog fighting a few weeks ago, is now heading to prison.

Last week a judge sentenced Sanchez to one to three years for animal fighting, one year for animal cruelty and one year for criminal possession of a weapon. (Sanchez will serve these sentences concurrently.)

He’s also been slapped with a ban on keeping animals for the duration of his parole. Sanchez waived his right to appeal.

We hope Sanchez’s sentence serves as a reminder to dog fighters that their crimes against innocent animals carry serious consequences.

These sick people deserve to be treated the same way they treated the animals that they abused and murdered. I'd love to see the same sentence given to people that abuse, rape and murder animals as they would get if they harmed a human being. After all, animals are the voiceless ones. They are innocent. As for Michael Vick...he should have gotten the death penalty. You cannot reform someone who would commit such a heinous act anymore than you can reform a pedofile. They are sick in a way that can never be treated with medication, incarceration, or "therapy." They're a useless part of society that should be eliminated for the good of all.

Any one who is cruel to dogs or in fact any animal should be treated as a criminal that'was involved in wounding or killing a person. Any one who does such an evil act must have a warped mind. I rescued a Pit Bull who was lying in the middle of a street in the Bronx, NY. Her name is Sadie . How any one that be could be so cruel is beyond me. She is the love of my life. Not that I'm biased but she's one of the smartest dog I ever owned (7).

He should have gotten a longer time in jail. Look how much Vick is now making. The judge should have made his punishment longer and that he has to pay 25% of his salary to animal welfare for his lifetime..

I agree about Vick, I think the proper punishment should have been to have his money and possessions taken away and given to rescue groups and tie him out back with a heavy collar and chain and fight him against other dog fight promoters that have been caught. And then the first fight that he loses, they should connect battery cables and shock him until he loses conscienciousness and bring him back and then do it again and again until he withers away. And by the way, shame on the NFL for letting that killer play football again, I haven't watched and will NEVER watch another football game as long as I live and I try to get other people not to watch also. And I can't believe they allowed him to have another dog. Un-effin-believeable !!!

The whole Vick thing made me mad. So if I am wrong please correct me. My understanding was Obama called Vick's coach when Vick started playing football and gave the coach an attaboy for letting him play and that 2nd chance. Sorry something wrong with this. Is he gonna call people that have been in prison for years and released by DNA evidence . Sure they did not get a call.

I think anyone who does this should be given the same treatment done to them as they did to these poor defenseless animals. Starve them first, put them in chains and give them minimal water to drink. Keep them caged up for months upon months with no bathroom facilities and leave their filthy underwear on them for months. I feel this would give them a better understanding of what these animals had to endure. If I had my way, I would shot them in the leg and leave them to die or put them In a trap and leave them to die from starvation. As you can tell, I have no time or sympathy for these type of idiotic human beings, if you can even call them human.

I agree with you 100%. The punishment should fit the crime. These deranged human beings need to understand that the punishment will be severe and not just some short termed incarceration (at the expense of the taxpayer I might add). Jail time is nothing to these lunatics. They need to feel the same pain that they have inflicted. And it they don't survive it, Oh well.....

I agree wholeheartedly. The time should fit the crime. They should be chained, starved, with minimal water, have to live in their own feces/urine. Then they should be made to fight, in public, to the death - no doubt like the poor innocent dogs have to do. They definitely should get MORE time, & NOT be able to get out early. These people are a poor excuse for a human being.

Why poison an innocent shark with a tainted human? Seriously, I agree with everyone - it really does my heart good to read all the comments. I wish there was a way we could all force our different jurisdictions to make the laws and penalties more stiff for crimes against innocent animals. It seems everywhere you turn there is some new horrific outrage and often it seems overwhelming and futile. But we must persevere and in doing so, make the difference.

It's not the race that defines a person character...the fact that he is of a Hispanic heritage does that mean ALL of us are dogfighters.....this is a reason to have stronger laws against animal cruelty! Not to increase hate among others

I completely agree with making them live the way they made these animals live but male them fight to the death and sell tickets to pray of the national debt. I personally couldn't watch it but I would love hearing about it. I know I sound twisted but I feel for the voiceless

I agree a hundred percent! These people disgust me. Treating them the way the treat these helpless animals is just what they deserve. I am so sick and tired of these loser criminals and their lame sentences. It's no wonder they keep doing it again and again. Victims of crime are always the losers, because the govt is so worried about their poor rights. Isn't it time to reverse this? I don't care about their rights one bit, and they should never be allowed to have an animal for life! People like this do not change.

I am in 100% agreement. These people are real scum. Every comment I read is in agreement of that point. We can work to change the sentence they get. Talk to your governor, reps, senators, congressmen. We need to tell them how we feel, that the sentence is too light for animal abusers. Tell them they need to have tougher laws and punishment for people who abuse any animal. Otherwise they won't even slow down. There must be something that makes them think twice about abusing animals. That is what our officials are there for..."of, by and for the people". Be the squeaky wheel.
