Terrified, Matted Pup Gets Happy Ending: Diamond’s Before and After

Thursday, January 10, 2013 - 12:30pm
Before and after rescued Bichon Frise

Last year in Texas, a scared little white pup named Diamond arrived at the City of Abilene’s municipal shelter. She was dirty, painfully matted and very scared. No one knew it at the time, but she was also deaf.

If Diamond had arrived at the shelter a year earlier, she may never have found her happy ending. But the folks who work at the City of Abilene shelter are especially dedicated and strongly committed to saving animals’ lives. Naturally, they jumped at the chance to take part in the ASPCA’s Carroll Petrie Foundation Dog Rescue Project, unveiled in September.

Part of the ASPCA Animal Relocation Initiative, the Carroll Petrie Foundation Dog Rescue Project helps cash-strapped municipal shelters like Abilene’s relocate dogs to off-site adoption programs, rescues or private shelters by providing municipal shelters $50 per dog placed. That money can be spent on vet care for an animal, transportation of the pet, or on anything else that will help move the animal out of the shelter.

For Diamond, this program was a godsend. Abilene was able to use the Petrie subsidy to move her to The Pawed Squad rescue. After a desperately needed grooming, Diamond revealed herself to be an adorable little Bichon Frise! She also came out of her shell and showed she would make a wonderful companion.

Soon after rescuing Diamond, the Pawed Squad was able to place her in a loving home that cherishes her every day. Her deafness was never an issue for these awesome adopters.

Congratulations to Abilene, The Pawed Squad rescue and Diamond’s happy family. We’re so glad the Carroll Petrie Foundation Dog Rescue Project is changing lives like hers and thousands of others.

Ridiculous to say Obama is responsible for not bringing these animals home. This has been going on long before Obama was President. It is because of the social media that more is being found out about crueltly to animals across the board. You should thank him rather than blame him.

God, I'm glad President Obama walks on water! Everything in the world is his fault don't ya know! He is a single MAN, not GOD... He can not know everything that goes on with in a government as BIG as just our federal Government is. BESIDES.. HE DOES NOT MAKE LAWS... your congress does. And all the pork that is attached to what ever bills are passed is because of our congressmen what ever their political apitude is. Did you give a shelter a donation this month? Yes either human or Dog. When yiou saw that homeless person did you offer to take them to a resturant to buy them a meal.. probably not And if you can not bare to help a person did you give a dollar the the non kill shelter in your area? That extra soda or coffee yoiu drink every day- .75 per day times 31 equals...$23.25 just think how nmuch food that would have bought Animal or Human.... what about your neighbor you watched kick his dog? did you call the police about animal curelity?? Just us paying attention to abuse is not enough you have to stop it when you see it.. NO don't get hurt but get involved. You say your woried about how "0ur NATION" is turning out... Well what have you done to personally help it? Don't bitch till you can say you "PERSONALLY" did something to stop it... President Obama, pays attention to what is presented to him.. Just like every other president befiore him has. Being able to voice your opinion has brought yours and my attention to the plight that animals around the world go through. Nothing has changed it has always been there... We until now just did not know about it.. and if your really piossed off about the treatment of humans and animals THEN BY GOD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT.. don't just sit back and bitch. It takes action to change things

You took the words right out of my mouth! Bravo!! I am disabled and not able to physically help the animals, but I contribute regularly to shelters...both animal and human. I have called the authorities on several occasions about animal abuse and neglect. The 2 dogs I have now were both rescues...I wouldn't have it any other way. This is not a political board and should not be used as such, but I have learned that some people will blame President Obama for anything and everything they can think of...even if it happened long before he was president! So, I echo your sentiment...Get up, get involved, take animal welfare seriously and do something about it...instead of blaming others and pointing fingers.

We are active in our local facebook community and help find homes for animals with limited options. Be open to taking in a pet that could use a loving home. In keeping with the injection of political comments: "THEN BY GOD DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Don't just sit back and bitch. It takes action to change things" We had too many bitchers and post leaners in the last election and look what the cat dragged in - AGAIN !! Geez....

THANK YOU FOR INJECTING A NOTE OF SANITY INTO WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A HAPPY STORY WITH A HAPPY ENDING. I'D JUST LIKE TO KNOW WHY IT TURNED POLITICAL! SORRY BUT ELECTIONS ARE OVER AND IF PEOPLE WANT CHANGES START AT THE LOWER LEVELS THAT ACTUALLY MAKE THE SO CALLED LAWS. THE PRESIDENT ONLY SIGNS OR VETOS. HE HAS NO REAL POWER, A FIGUREHEAD MORE OR LESS.

totally agree

Totally correct! AMEN

Do you honestly believe that the destruction of military animals BEGAN with the Obama administration???? How naive, or bigoted, are you? If you will think back a few years, it was George W. Bush who started the wars with Afghanistan and Iraq in which so many of these dogs have been used. Bush 43 was in office for 8 years and did nothing, NADA, to protect these animals. And, if any of you saw the movie "War Horse", you may begin to understand that the treatment of animals, especially companion animals, has evolved and is continuing to evolve. If we as a nation would shut down the puppy mills and the back yard breeders, it would reflect far better on of all of us who love animals. Your anger would be better directed at the issue of puppy mills and back yard breeders as that is where you can have a substantial impact on the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of animals. Get a grip and leave national politics out of the discussion. Local policies and politics, however, are areas where you can directly impact animal welfare. This can be done by speaking before your local boards and by starting petitions for improvements/changes. Be proactive rather than reactive. Do something positive for a change rather than trying to blame everything that is wrong with this country on one individual. We, as a nation, did not fall apart overnight, and we will certainly not regroup overnight.

I completely agree with Linda - it's pro-activity that matters, not reading something, saying "How awful that is", and then going on to read something else. I'm on an aged Pension, and I manage to contribute to 3 Animal Sites each month, and have for a long time. I write as much as I can on sites such as this, the large Animal Agencies, and small Shelters, and the Government in General. Please DO something to help, rather than condemn. If you care give some time, if you can, and use the computer to do some good.

On the subject of president obama. Everyone needs to look up how president obama allows american horses to be sent to canada and mexico and how they inhumainly slaughter them . They put them in a small coral and repeatedely stab them to death until they bleed to death. These poor horses are just not wanted because someone has decided that they are not useful anymore. I actually was sent pictures of this appalling and inhumane literature from a horse rescue. One horses face was gone including his eye.Obama signed this i believe on Oct18th a few years ago.

I contacted my congressman Mr.Gardner from Colo. about this and recieived a letter saying he would vote against the bill. Well, I guess that old dog cannot learn new tricks like listening to the folks who voted for him. I wonder if Obama would like to see a pen of dogs including Beau being stabbed to death and bleed out just because there are do many extra dogs in the country.

so WRONG

You can write about the tips on the blog. You might relinquish it's fascinating. Your blog recommendations may thicken your commissions

You all are right! We all need to bug our congressmen about animal rights. Our king is to busy racking up trillions of dollars in debt! He just got a dog so he could have photo ops and look like a caring person ! He is killing our country !

No, he got a dog because he has two kids, who pestered him until he agreed. I wish he were more animal protection-oriented, but his big task is to find jobs, which is not easy because of predatory practices of some big corporations, but which is closely watched and criticized, whatever he does by the Republicans who decided as a group 4 yrs ago to oppose everything he tries to do and make sure he's not voted in again. He has to worry about jobs and profits for lumberers and paper plants rather than about owls and wolves and other animals whose habitats the lumberers destroy. It goes like that. I keep signing emails requesting him to protect wolves and stop oil companies from destroying pristine Arctic environments where polar bears have to survive somehow, but the pressure from oil companies, and others who think profits for corporations are more important than wolves and polar bears. If enough of us press him to support our causes, he will have some ammunition against the powerful rich oil companies. He doesn't have so much choice in the battles he gets to fight. I don't know why anyone wants to be president of the USA, but I'm sure Obama got in there with the plight of the poor and the bad manners of the rich and powerful in mind. I can only support causes so he'll see they're big enough and popular enough for him to actually get something done for them in the face of the opprobrium of the other side, which has no concept of the Common Good. Think a little before you condemn this guy with his heart and head in the right place.

The only priority Obama has is golfing, vacationing, and spending OUR hardearned money! The economy is his LAST priority as evidenced by his focusing on anything else BUT! He jumps from one topic to another. That 'community organizer' has never even run a lemonade stand, let alone a city or country, and has spent MORE than all the other previous presidents COMBINED. But I agree, this topic should be about pet rescue.

What politician does??? There are not too many out there!!! Singling out Obama is being narrow-minded. No, I'm not an Obama support...I don't even live in the US!!! Just saying it as it is!!!

What the Obamas spend on their vacations every year including taking extra planes for Mr. and Mrs, many many shelters could be helped and so many animals could be saved.

The Obama's, specifically President Obama, has taken FEWER vacation days than George W.Bush. Check it out in snopes.

So true. Show me a politician that truely cares about the animals in this country. Also, it is true - all that money wasted on trips by the Obama regime could helpt many many animals.

Please stop with the expletives. If you feel the need to call people names and use foul language go somewhere else. Once again, we DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOUR OPINION ON OBAMA.

I concur. Some are zealot idiots though and must spew their hate anywhere.

I agree with "Disgusting To Inject Politics"! This is about saving animals and the wonderful work of the ASPCA. And as far as Romney and his dog Seamus' method of transport on a family vacation, if I had been in the area and saw that, I would report him to the ASPCA. Romney is a poor excuse for a human being!

But you're not injecting politics into this discussion? Excuse me, your parttisanism is showing. Both leaders have things to answer to. The president's in power and has more to answer to right now. The same would be true if Romney were in office.

How dare anyone inject hate-filled invectives into this discussion. I cannot think of a single politico who has done anything out of the norm for animals, they tend to be selfish individuals and animals cannot vote. Keep your unwanted and irrelevant political opinions to yourself!

Please everybody, we're all animal lovers and want the best for our pets and other animals around the US and the world. Let's stop talking badly to each other and understand that we're all on the same side here. Let's all go out today and do something good for animals anywhere we can. Using our energy in a positive direction is the way to go instead of being mad at people with a different political view than ours. Education about animal cruelty and donating to ASPCA is a start. Thank-you.

I am pleased that you care for anilmals but if you had taken time to really read the story you are commenting on you would understnad that Diamond arrived at the city shelter (aka the pound) in this condition and because the shelter partners with ASPCA the dedicated workers there were able to use ASPCA funds to relocate her to a rescue shelter where she was groomed and they found her a loving home. These workers at that city pound are to be commended - not blamed for the condition the poor dog was in when she arrived. And this is not the place for blame politics. This is about us all doing something. If you have a concern about your local shelter/pound please volunteer and become active in making it a better place. Perhaps you could give tham information about partnering with no kill shelters to save more "diamonds" in rough shape.

I agree that politics has no place in this story. I commend all the people that work so hard for homeless animals. Volunteer to help shelters and adopt the animals and tell everyone you know to do the same.

Well said!

You are right. City shelters that take the time and effort to re-locate animals with other shelters so they can get the care they so desperately need should be commended and supported. If the folks on here who want to inject politics into a non-political story would click on the Advocacy button and do something constructive with their comments, the world would be a better place for animals.

YOUR ABSOLUTLY CORRECT! Don't bitch... help a shelter, support a group do something. Don't just talk about how good how bad or even what ever... Do something! You ask me what are you doing Nelda? 1. I run a blog on pets 2. I am a member of turn FaceBook Orange for awarness of animal abuse 3. I support with money 12.38 USD a month to group in Bosina who haven't been able to get a sponser to help support them. I also sew blankets and sleeping pads and Dog coats for the Street Dogs in Bosina. 4. I help as I can with Lets adopt Global I'm retired and living on Social security and my military pension. But I give what I can... Don't Bitch.. Do something. be a leader not a griper n.

Thank you, for attempting to return to the point of the article. A dog was saved by an ASPCA program, & I wish EVERY animal could be saved as well. This isn't the forum to argue the short-comings of this Presidency.

Maybe it is or maybe it isn't. If it isn't the place, then let's not just avoid the shortcomings of the president, but all politicians.

Forgive me but I don't see any politician's name listed in this article. This story is about a beautiful Bichon name4d Diamond who found her furever home. Kudos to many places who really work at finding homes for these dogs! Yeay Diamond!

Florida has MDAS who has people struggling to save doggies. California has ORANGE COUNTY, SAN BERNADINO, LANCASTER, LOS ANGELES, just to name the few. IN New YORK the famous shelter in the city kills a lot of them doggies..EVERY state has at least one shelter that is overflowing and needs help...

Hi Dixie, What you wrote about the precious dog Diamond was so wonderful as so many of us feel this way who love animals. To add that Obama doesn't care about animals because he's not a caring people person that is false.Look to Congress who has been taking aid funds out of Fema. They are now about to take more out leaving people with the disaster of Sandy holding it in their own pockets. The Congress continues on voting no on homeless homes for Veterans along with trying to take #SS,medicare and medicate from seniors who need them.Thousands of seniors in the USA need all of these to continue care living in nursing homes and every day life before entering one.No Dixie no matter what you've heard it is not Obama but Congress who acts on giving and taking for humans and animals.I'm a animal lover and animals bring so much joy.Have a great day Judith from Florida

I am not a big Obama fan. I like to tell people I voted for him because he is not Mitt Romney. That was good enough for me. Romney sneered at humans who needed any kind of assistance because they did not have the luck to be born with millions like him. I do not think he would have any more concern about animals needing help.

Lady, you can find ANY animal shelter and they will need your help, and it's always been this way no matter who was president right back to George Washington. So your silly political comments to yourself and help the animals in the shelter nearest you. Your money and your volunteer work will be put to good use for the well being of animals.

well said!!!!!!

Bravo. This should be about Saving animals. Not politics, getting tired of EVERYTHING turning into Politics right now. Keep focused on the other issues. Saving animals. They need our help.

I would love to help. As of right now I'm baking dog treats and making hand made greeting cards to raise as much as I can as an independent person with a mission to help the ones with no voice be heard. Please if you have a petition email me and I'll get as many signatures as I can. If you should find yourself on a web site called change.org sign the petition which hopefully stop our government from using shelter dogs for military training. Do not watch the video still can't sleep. sincerely Christina Poltoranos

GET A LIFE. We are here to help animals not listen to jackasses

I think you mean "Obama couldn't care less"... And you are obviously a Republican with THAT comment. However, did Bush Jr. OR Bush Sr. do ANYTHING for animals...OR people...during their terms. I DON'T THINK SO!

I agree that it would be great to see more and more programs like this in our country. I have 3 rescue dogs and two rescue kitties and they make the most wonderful pets. However, I have to ask where you come up with the idea that President Obama doesn't care about animals. SERIOUSLY, with all that he has to worry about in his second term, this is where you think his energy should be concentrated? Pretty convoluted way of looking at things. He's our president and one of the most compassionate presidents we've had in a very long while - you shoud show respect.

I agree. Since joining Facebook I've learned so much about the plight of dogs and cats. I've read horror stories and wonderful, happy ending stories. I crosspost animals in need of homes. I know Baldwin and Devore in southern California have high kill rates, Gwinnett in GA, Miami-Dade, FL. Manhattan and Brooklyn have a lot of animals on the euth lists. Hope this helps. I believe there is a page on Facebook where they are trying to do away with all shelters. It's heartbreaking.

Okay, let me try to help you out understand something because apparently you dont get it. The story said the dog was originally brought in to the municipal shelter. Pretty much all municipal shelters are cash strapped because, in case you dont know, that means its run and funded by the city. So you want to know about more places that need help, pick a city, any city!

Happy ending for the little pup and I agree wholeheartedly with you Joy. II urge everyone to go to the Humane Society web page and look up their legislators & how they voted on animal rights' issues this past year before they vote in the next election. I'm in Texas & the results are abysmal. Our local shelter in Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Spring, TX. They are overrun with both cats & dogs and urgently need assistance. Some local groups are able to rescue a few animals weekly but the rest of the them are doomed to a guaranteed death. Hold your elected officials responsible & let them know how you feel. Bless all that help these innocent creatures.

Stop blaming someone else and ask yourself how YOU can make a change.WE are all personally responsibility for change, which is far more productive than passing it on to someone or something else. It's too easy to blame an organization or a political party (THEY did it) or a person in the spotlight (THE PRESIDENT didn't do enough). How about you look at what YOU can do right now? You can't change anyone but yourself, so step up and volunteer, donate, organize events, increase awareness, adopt a pet, or like me, foster homeless dogs until they are placed.

You think Romney would've done a better job? The man who tied his dog to the roof of his car for a day-long drive? Stop hating on President Obama and do something yourself.
