Hundreds of Sandy Pets Reunited with Families

Thursday, January 31, 2013 - 11:30am
Hurricane Sandy Shelter

Now that the Emergency Boarding Facility for Sandy animals is closed, we’re taking a moment to look back at the hundreds of amazing reunions that we got to witness there.

We want to thank Rachael Ray for her generous gift that allowed us to launch the facility, and to thank the many animal welfare organizations from near and far who helped us run this operation.

We also want to take a moment to thank all of our supporters. Without you, we couldn’t have helped any of the families whose pets we boarded after Sandy—nor could we have helped the thousands of others who benefited from our other Sandy relief programs like search-and-rescue and food distribution.

We invite you to watch this video and remember that our work is sponsored by your generosity and kindness!

Tonight, hundreds of animals who were once boarded with us are now sleeping near their loved ones once again.

Our boarding facility also housed stray animals found in disaster areas in the wake of Sandy. Those who weren’t claimed after exhaustive efforts to find their families are getting happy endings, too: All were transferred to either our Adoption Center or our rescue partners for adoption, and some have already found loving homes.

From the bottom of our hearts: Thank you, ASPCA supporters! We’re committed to staying ready to respond to any natural disaster at a moment’s notice, and we’re so glad you’re in our corner.

Thank you for your wonderful work. I'm happy rumors about animals being put down if not claimed were not true.

Thank you for taking care the animals untl united with the family

This is one of the main reasons I support the great ASPCA. You should, too. In addition to my automatic monthly donation, I send extra funds to cover natural disasters like the tsunami in Japan, Katrina in New Orleans, and Sandy mainly in NY and NJ. I know of no other organization that contributions to the well being of our 4-legged friends as they do. Keep up the good work! Carol in Ohio

Thank you for what you do!

You people who work for the ASPCA are truly "Heaven" sent. Thank you for all that you do!!!

My most heartfelt thanks and love to people like the ASPCA who give so much love and effort into helping our beloved animals. That's one reason the ASPCA is in my will as a beneficiary. I LOVE ALL ANIMALS!!!!!

What a wonderful orrnagization ASPCA is. I give as I can financially but thank you to all who give time and devotion to these needy pets. You give healthcare, food and lodging to these pets but most of all you give LOVE! God Bless Each and every one of you. OH

You guys are awesome in everything you do for all animals, Thanks for reuniting these families lost pets, now they are complete.

I wanted to thank everyone for helping save so many pet family members. Without your help I shutter to think what would have happened to peoples beloved pets and how horrible it would be for their pet parents to have to live with out their loved ones. THANK YOU ALL FOR ALL THAT YOU DO TO HELP ANIMALS!

DESDE BOGOTÀ. COLOMBIA.EN MEDIO DE MIS PROBLEMAS PERSONALES, USTEDES ME RELAJAN Y ME MOTIVAN CON ESTAS NOTICIAS TAN ALENTADORAS PARA LOS ANIMALITOS...GRACIAS! GRÀCIAS POR AYUDARLOS!!!!!

Well, I can't say it any better than some of the other posters, but I am always appreciative of the way that you help helpless animals. Nothing makes me as sad as an animal that is cruelly treated or subject to trauma or disaster. They are so innocent and can't understand what is happening to them. I wish I could donate more than the monthly pittance that I do send. Hopefully some day I will be able to.

Way to GO ASPCA!!! You do miraculous work :-;-), and HAVE BEEN DOING IT for over 170 YEARS. You have my UNDYING support and loyalty!

May God bless ASPCA ~ all the people who work tirelessly to rescue the animals and reunite with their families. May more people donate to the cause and help ASPCA continue their great efforts in saving animals.

Martin Luther King Jr. is quoted as saying, “Never, never be afraid to do what's right, especially if the well-being of a person or animal is at stake. Society's punishments are small compared to the wounds we inflict on our soul when we look the other way.”

You and all of the wonderful people commenting here restore my faith in humanity. Wish we had people like you in cruel Latin America. There are good people for sure, but we aren't able to join them because there are no honest and real associations. We work alone and it is known that union makes the force. I sometimes find myself feeding cats that other people feed and I am sure I'm missing cats that never see a piece of food in days. Wish Latin America were more organized and less stupid and cruel. It is so easy to destroy a life and so so difficult to restore an animal faith in humans and to save lives. They destroy in minutes, we can't fix their souls in years.

The Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals was pleased to partner with the ASPCA to provide volunteers at the emergency boarding facility and transport to move pets to and from the facility, including transporting pets back to their families. We are proud to be a part of the Animal Planning Task Force of the NYC Office of Emergency Management and to work collaboratively with the ASPCA, AC&C of NYC, VERT, HSUS Pets for Life, and our other APTF partners.

Thanks to the ASPCA! What a wonderful job you have done! Taking care of our four legged friends as well as you do! Thanks for having heart!

I volunteered there for only a day since I do alot of tnr etc etc but I must say the people working there were sooooooooooooo sweet and took so good care of the animals it was awesome so Im not surprised they found so many good homes....

Thank you ASPCA for saving these animals. If I ever lost my cats in a disaster I would be incredibly heartbroken. I am THRILLED to know that there is an organiation that can return animals to their owners and homes. Thank you, and I will continue to support your wonderful efforts! Katie in Minnesota.

I've shared this on Facebook and told people to have tissues nearby. The tears of happiness are still falling. Thank you ASPCA for all that you do for the animals.
