Lucky NYC Cat Survives Five-Story Fall onto Spiked Fence

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 - 2:00pm
Injured cat

At the ASPCA, we see many feline victims of High Rise Syndrome each year, but perhaps none so lucky as three-year-old Pereque, who miraculously survived a fall from a five-story apartment building window right onto a spiked fence.

After his fall, Pereque’s pet parent rushed him to ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, where he underwent surgery with ASPCA Director of Surgery Dr. J’mai Gayle that same day.

Pereque sustained only non-life threatening injuries—in fact, he didn’t even have a broken bone! Fortunately for Pereque, the spikes on the fence just missed his femoral artery, and all of his major organs were unharmed.

ASPCA Veterinarian Dr. Laura Niestat also treated Pereque during his stay at Bergh and released him to his pet parent three days later.

“I believe he ultimately did quite well,” Dr. Gayle says.

We’re so glad we were able to treat this resilient kitty when he needed us most!

Have been a big fan of Puroresu for many years and my favourite of all the wrestelers is Low -Ki . I think the reason i prefer it to WWE is the lack of hype when it comes to the fighters .More emphasis on skill makes it much more entertaining

Thank you very much ASPCA. If it was not for the love and care from both of our part and your part, Pereque would not have made it. He is an amazing cat and a very special one. He was very strong and at all times cooperated with everyone that crossed his way. This is definitely a memorable experience and we are very happy that he is recovering like a super cat :))). How does one fall 5-stories and land on a spiked fence survive? Amazing little cat...so glad he was rushed to animal hospital immediately and that he is doing so well!

I seriously doubt this cat 'fell' - is anyone investigating this incident? The area is known for animal abandonment, abuse and 'falls'

Glad this beautiful cat survived and is doing better!!! It does seem incredible he fell 5 stories onto a fence and survived but cats do have "9 lives".....

This cat is so fortunate to have survived. And to the person that thinks it did not happen the way the owner says it did, please do not judge people without knowing the people, and the facts. Why would they rush the cat to the hospital if they meant for it to be hurt. This is what is wrong with this world; people doing God's job, which is to judge.

Poor cat Almost to lucky butvicsm glad she or he survived And at the person who says it was a "fall" They wouldn't have rushed it to the hispital

Yes, Pereque is VERY lucky to have survived the five-story fall, and I am so happy that he is doing well; however, if I were the vet, I would seriously consider not letting that owner have the cat back. How/why was Pereque allowed to be in a window or wherever where this could happen?? This is totally unacceptable, and, in my opinion, the cat should be placed in a loving, responsible home rather than with the owner who let him fall. What a shame animals have to suffer at the hands of the irresponsibility of humans. This truly makes me sick!!!

For those who believe in the worst of every situation, chill. Living in a city there are bound to be valid reasons for this to occur. Even a good person forgets to close a window. If screens weren't provided chances are that they would never be any time soon. Cats with balconies and never doing anything wrong can still accidentally lose their footing. It happens. Yes they will rethink the access to the outdoors the cat has from now on, but it was never an issue of negligence, just a lapse of judgement. To rip these folks a new one, even after doing the right thing for their baby, is an injustice. For them this a case of 20/20 hindsight, but for you it a case expecting the worst of everyone. If you look for evil you will find it everywhere you look, even if it is not there. Props to these people for doing the right thing. Just wish them well and move on. Peace

Thank you for writting. Accidents do happen and i'm sure the cat's owners feel bad enough about what happened with out other peoples cruel comments. I'm glad kitty was rushed to the vet's and doing well.

My cat fell from my 4th floor bedroom window. In her case she managed to tear away the screen from the frame. You truly don't know the story so judging isn't productive. I've learned from my experience and have purchased a more rugged screen and also now have her nails clipped at the vet on a regular basis. Hopefully this story might help others think about their setup. BTW, like the owner in this story I rushed her to the animal hospital. She turned out to be fine.

Yes, give this pet family a break. We all know cats are very inquisitive,& manage to get into some very unusual situations. If the family didn't care, they wouldn't have taken the poor thing to the ER immediately. They learned a lesson, I'm sure: they'll pay more attention to safety so high up now.

Has anyone ever heard of an "accident?" I read of a toddler who did the same thing a couple of yrs. ago in NYC, I believe? So should they rescind all parental rights for the parental "neglect?" As a retired nurse, I cringe at what happened & can't image how the cat survived much less is in good shape now. Maybe a thank you to my higher power is in order here.

that is crazy why would you give that cat back to the owner. they were obviously neglegent in the first place!!
