Lucky NYC Cat Survives Five-Story Fall onto Spiked Fence

Tuesday, January 22, 2013 - 2:00pm
Injured cat

At the ASPCA, we see many feline victims of High Rise Syndrome each year, but perhaps none so lucky as three-year-old Pereque, who miraculously survived a fall from a five-story apartment building window right onto a spiked fence.

After his fall, Pereque’s pet parent rushed him to ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, where he underwent surgery with ASPCA Director of Surgery Dr. J’mai Gayle that same day.

Pereque sustained only non-life threatening injuries—in fact, he didn’t even have a broken bone! Fortunately for Pereque, the spikes on the fence just missed his femoral artery, and all of his major organs were unharmed.

ASPCA Veterinarian Dr. Laura Niestat also treated Pereque during his stay at Bergh and released him to his pet parent three days later.

“I believe he ultimately did quite well,” Dr. Gayle says.

We’re so glad we were able to treat this resilient kitty when he needed us most!

If you don't know don't judge, accidents happen regardless of how safe it is.

Hey, stuff happens. Even to the most responsible people. Hope you never serve on a jury. So glad that Pereque is OK!

Chill is right. Not everyone is perfect like you. Obviously these people care very much about their adorable cat or they wouldn't have taken him to a hospital. $$$ Maybe they will be more careful in the future, but I am absolutley certain that this sweet thing is in a loving home. Who could hope for more, really?

Thank-you for asking the right question!! It's not about whether or not the cat "fell", it's about why the cat was allowed to be in a place where falling was a possibility! We all know that High Rise Syndrome is extremely common, which is why responsible owners don't allow thier cats access to heights! When will people learn - we have to speak AND act for them in their best interest!!

I'm so glad Perequa is doing so well. Thank goodness for the ASPCA and their great vets!

I love the darling, soft collar Pereque is wearing. SO MUCH BETTER and one I've never seen. Someone deserves an award for that design!

Pereque's guardian kitty angel was flying with him. Incredible that so little damage was done. Just goes to show you miracles happen.

To those of you who seem to be so lackidaisical about an animal almost dying due to a fall that could have been prevented: you don't know that this wasn't an act of negligence, either, now do you?? To me, this is inexcusable and irresponsible, and that's that, no matter how one looks at it. I certainly DO NOT look for the worst in every situation, but this is a lapse of judgement that almost cost this cat his life. If that happened to be a child, would you be so "chilled out" about it?? I hope you don't have children or companion animals. Seems to me someone else is being judgemental here besides the ones who don't think this is a big deal. I have my opinion and you have yours, so let it go at that!!

Listen, Birdbrain, QUIT BEING A TROLL AND TRYING TO START TROUBLE!!! To the blog, this individual is notorious for trying to create chaos where none exists. Just ignore the twit!

Man, if I was that cat, I would sure rather be with them than you.

Let me help you out with this since you seem to lack the rationality to see it. ASPCA with all their experience is certainly more qualified to make a judgement than you and was actually there, meaning they talked to the pet parents, treated and evaluated the cat and yet with all that experience and information still chose to let the parents take the cat home.

Before someone jumps on this: the word is spelled "lackadaisical". The next to the last sentence should read: "Seems to me someone is being judgemental here besides THE ONES WHO THINK IT IS A BIG DEAL". So sorry about the error. Hope I won't be taken to task about that.

No you'll be taken to task for being an idiot. Sometimes accidents happen. GET A GRIP, FREAKO!!

What will happen to Pereque after he recovers? How did he manage to fall in the first place? Sounds like neglect or possible abuse.

The only people that know what happened are the kitty's parents. So no one should be bearing false witness against anyone. You should all be happy that the Kitty is alive and doing well!!!!!

And thank you!

OMG. This story is so touching. What a miracle. I'm speechless. Thank you God for protcting his little innocent self. What a lucky little cat to still be alive and not seriously injured.

How wonderful that God was watching over this little kitty when it took such a terrible fall. "God watches over the sparrow..."

that is such a sad story. all it needed was a happy ending and did. I am so glad that cat made it.I am just smiling right now.

ya and the cat was rely lukey cause GOD WAS LOOKING DOWN AT THAT LUKEY CAT.

that is great. God was looking

WOW!!!! WOW!!!! WOW!!!! PEREQUE YOU ARE ONE LUCKY CAT!!!! STAY SAFE FROM NOW ON!!!! YOUR IN MY HEART AND PRAYERS!!!! BE SAFE AND HAPPY!!!!

For the people being judgemental this cat is lucky to have pet parents that love him. Other people would probably have just left him lying there. I am thankful for people who love their animals as much as these pet parents love their kitty and would give their arm and leg for them. So before you start judgeing, start listening.

what I will like to say now is just, "get well soon dear cat" :)

Wow! That is amazing. Get well soon kitty.

This is wonderful story to read. Sometimes all I can focus on are the negative aspects-like animal abuse and neglect. This is a story that reminds me that there are great things that happen, too!

YOU ARE SO STUPID!!!!

Saw the clip on Today show about all you've done to help the animal victims of Sandy.. living in Bend Oregon, where this town is great with adopting and pet owning, I'd like to encourage possible transport to wherever the animals may be adopted if not able to return to their owners.. wish I could foster them out here! Thank you for all you do, and hoping for the best for these animals. - See more at: http://blog.aspca.org/content/help-us-reunite-sandy-pets-their-families#sthash.f7PY1cEm.dpuf
